Container Hotel Boutique hotel

project

The goal of this site was to revitalize the northern downtown Chamapign. To increase the share with the community, pop-up stores are located on the ground floor. Theses spaces are given in modular system of containers, creating urban connection and continuing up to the hotel rooms. ‘Urbantainer’ is a common ground that does not restrict users. Continuous modularity using conainer box offers the guests an unique spatial experience that is different from the typical large, corporate chain hotel. Given its size of the rooms, the hotel has the best affordable accommodatin near the most central downtown locaiton. Various exposed steel structure allow visibility and a sense of openess throughout the building.

① SLIDING METAL PANEL - circular perforations about 1”-1.5” diametergiving the panel more rigidity and a more complex transparency - visual texture of the metal panel seems like texile curtain, allows the view to the outside and an adequate lighting

② CONTAINER ROOM - each container room shares two panels of entire elevation. Upon request, the panel opens and closes giving appropriate privacy.

③ CATWALK - 2” metal grating for cleaning metal panels and guestroom windows

④ AUTOMATED BOX - allows the worker to fold the panels open up to 90 degrees depending on guests’ needs

Van Gogh’s Cabin Kickapoo State Park

project

location

This project aims to develop designs of an overall master-plan of a small campground facility. The facilty includes small compound of 6 sleeping huts and shared spaces. The idea drives from the question of ‘What if Van Gogh was still alive and took vacation in Kickapoo park? Where would inspire him to the most to draw the Starry Night?’ The camping ground provides sceneric veiw of the park both in and out of the cabins and seperates hikers from the cabin users for privacy. Framed by the pond and the hills on either sides, visitors will feel immersed in nature from all directions, with abundant views to the forested slopes, seasonal changes. Cypress Tree is known for its refreshing smell and natural pesting control, which allow visitors to have more pleasant trip. Cypress trees are planted along the high pond keeping evergreen visual and fresh wood smell.

This project aims to explore issues such as density, diversity, and urbanity. At the scale of the city, urban infill building includes 2 commercial stores on the ground level and apartments from 2nd to 5th floor.

Alluding to African-American’s long history of distrotion, the building forms distorted angle from the origanl buildings. This is also applied to the gable roof in both different direction and height. The gable roof preserves the schme of the surrounding neighborhood and its original form. Work_Illini Union project

location

Illini Union was built in 3 phases over a span of about 60 years - 1930’s, 1990’s, and 1960’s. Consequently, the construction documents are not cohesive. Using Revit, a team of 4 architecture students are rebuilding comprehensive construction and architecture model which can be updated to reflect any renovations in the building construction. The work includes field verification, Revit program expertise, researching 1930’s construction annotation, understanding of reverse engineering and more. Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
