Assignment: Make a 20 ft sculpture with only tar paper, string, plaster, and no tape. Title: Heartbeat / Suspensation. Molds of hand-shaped clay telephone and bird with tar paper and string hanging in the air. Captures the fluttering feeling of admitting feelings to a crush and the moment of waiting for a reply. Viewers enter from the crush’s perspective of a phone ringing (due to the heartbeat and flutters of the confessor’s heart).

Assignment: Build a miniature gallery. Title: Waste. Gallery size is 2 ft by 2 ft. Squares are 1 in by 1 in. Commentary on possible negative effects of social media. Splitting of space and storage of colorful childlike molds in the closed off area signifies loss of individuality, imagination, and time spent being creative. Food also references body image issues sometimes promoted by social media. Cut, nailed, glued, and painted assorted woods with jigsaw, scroll saw, and sandpaper. Molds made with real broccoli and self-created clay models of mushrooms and bananas. Real toilet paper cut and re-rolled.

Assignment: Making large version of the miniature model. Title: The Scroll Hole. Built an 8 ft by 8 ft wall with two 4 ft by 8 ft pieces. Large black square (with circle) is 4 ft by 4 ft. Made with handheld jigsaw, sandpaper, hammer, and nails. Metal triangular prisms of stairs made by oxygen acetylene gas welding of rebar. An area to waste time scrolling through social media feeds. Again, color, which signifies creativity, is stored away. Left: miniature model (2015). Right: large version (2017).

Assignment: contradiction, opposite, incongruity, uncanny. Title: Oxygen / The Luckiest Candle / One Wish. Accompanied by a written piece. Included under materials is oxygen. Wire, paper, paint, plaster, and wax were shaped with hands, heat, pliers, brushes. To be viewed in the dark. The unexpected focus is the oxygen surrounding the candle that allows the flame to burn – rather than the flower/flame itself. The height of the candle is approximately ¾ my height and symbolizes the life that I have lived and the life I have left to live. During my critique people were surprised about the topic of death. However, I explained that for me, it is the opposite – this candle is about life. It is to remember the joy, hope, purpose, and energy with which I live my life.
