Predictable Voyage City What is the New BASIC? ASA, Bangkok 16’

Predictable Daily Life of the day

Humanity has long dwelled on unpredictability. It was difficult to predict life or death each day in hunter-gatherer society and people back in agraria society for over 10,000 year failed to precisely predict weather. Furthermore, it was difficult to predict world economy and technological development in the days of industrial society.

Fortunately, things became a lot easier to predict today. Humanity is capable of predicting world stock market to invest on rising stocks and weather forecast to decide whether to bring umbrella each morning; people even receive recommendations on what to wear based on my previous preference, inclination and weather status.

One of the striking changes is that compared to those times when humanity couldn’t predict traveling routes and time, long distance travel today has turned into a comfortable journey and became part of leisure.

Reconstitution of Bulk carrier to a New City

The oil is losing its value as a resource today. Harming gases coming out from the use of oil cause global warming. Global acceptance of oil as a currency illustrates the seriousness of the problem. Therefore, the potential of revival energy and alternative energy is rapidly growing. It already shows that the value of existing infrastructure is devaluated.

The necessity of oil tanker is decreasing due to the development of new energy and installation of Ocean oil pipeline pipes. Rebuild of oil tanker can lead to reformation of ‘moving city’ of today. Megacity today has started to dismantle due to its energy, distribution and industry functions. Floating new city creates new value by coalescing with dismantling city. Direct interaction within people initiates the long distance work, cultural combination within cities and resource supply.

Ubiquitous life with confidence is practical

Predictability means that humanity can pre-handle and prepare before the event : finding the most efficient way to survive with given but limited resources such as raw materials and time. The city we are proposing searches and predicts the most efficient solution for ideal building construction from limited resources coming from its unique ‘above the sea’ environment.

Predictable and Adaptable city-scaled Life Ship is just like a city. People in the ship work and entertain just like the ones from city. They culture food and raise livestocks. + Weather in City: Floating city provides predictable lives for nomads of today. Based on weather forecast, Canopies flap when raining and openings get closed in cold region. It becomes city-scale reactant. + Encounter with a new city : The type of livings and range changes. The city composed based on spatial ground level is redistributed in modularized formation. Then it determines the necessity amounts of farming block and the range of livestock for another voyage to the next interaction with a new city. + Changes in population: The city posses solid formation and thus reflect future city’s living aspect to manipulate ground level. Deck composed of structure hypothesis can well handle public zoning. The greatest advantage of City predicting citizen’s living aspect is to distribute limited resources. +Interaction within cities: The member can change when city interacts with another city. The reformation of city and expansion continues for the new members. The city travels around the world generating energy and exchanging culture to posses necessary resources.

COMPOSITION : REPRODUCE TODAY’S CITY Roads in city are formed based on forms of prediction of PENETRATE, CIRCULATE and CONNECT

City today imposes new programs on top of the roof-level that was not previously used. It becomes a special place. While stacking up personal residential spaces, they contradict each other. Through vertical residences, it seeking up composition of comfortable space.

For making up the weak points of existing urban agriculture, we apply Low-Entropy technology and vertical agriculture system to this city. It is like a mechanical parking station that Plugs-in and is able to predict the exact amount of output. Council acting as the center of the city has its political meaning. Radial arrangement represents the concentration of authority and democracy.

City apply flecible formation in building’s facade for energy&life environment. From this flexibility, space of accommodable is composed up.

Orthopedic grid composes of streamlined architectural formation based on living/working facilities’ increase and expansion.

Cultural space is composed from the deck’s empty basement. It is used for different purpose based on the changes of ground level.

Ideal environment on living and intervention with mobile architectural structure

The architecture today is familiar with dry construction method with panelizing. Instead of the concrete that exhaust Co2, architecture utilizes dry resources to form a structure and recycle. Therefore, the deck is ready for its complete architecture. Based on the architecture, the supply of city infrastructure, expansion of community space and predictable fairway and its livestock raising based on weather forecast is doable. Democratic council will be elected reasonably for the city’s operating rights.

Each part of the city is divided based on the initial deck. Each sectors has applied architectural vocabulary that are used in city today and divided within separate space. This contains the potential for change through interaction with New city’s Ground Level that is distinguished from land’s one. Sectors linked in a city-penetrating road network system make typological transparent figure throughout whole city. And it realizes multi-level streets city completely and it becomes a stereoscopic structural composition.

Lifestyle of Today’s New Nomad

It doesn’t necessarily mean that the physical interactions have disappeared just because space and time limitation has been reduced due to the scientific development. Rather, it means that frequent communication is allowed today. Many people travel around for traveling and business meetings; they are nomads of this era. However, they are different from those of digital nomads and previous nomads. They travel and predict their time and future to create new values.

A wall between us Palestine wall design Velux, Denmark 16’

Character of Light A shadow is the product of light. But at the same time, the shadow is the only subject that makes light visible. Light and shadow. Shadow and light. light is always followed by shadow and perhaps because of this the existence of light is magnified. Without darkness, the existence of light cannot be proven and without light, the shadow, which is a part of darkness, also cannot exist. Therefore, a shadow can exist because there is light and also the value of light is validated by the shadow.

Palestine Region Palestine is a region that has suffered from ideological conflicts between Israel and Arab countries since the late 19th century. As a result, a 730km-long concrete barrier called the Security Fence (named by the Israeli) or the Separation Wall (named by the Palestinians) was constructed in the West Bank of Israel’s Jordan River to divide the two sides. This is not a problem confined to Israel and Arab countries. In this project, rather than discussing the right or wrong of a ideology, we hoped to provide an opportunity to at least once think about whether the ideologies or values that each individual has is the absolute truth. Depending on a person’s position, one can be good and one can be bad. Through the reality and illusion of a shadow created by light, we aspire to convey a message to once again think about the difference between what is shown to people and what they understand or mistakenly think they see.

Reality & Illusion All the objects and environments surrounding us continuously change with the changes in season and time, and depending on the changes in the surrounding environment, light and shadow constantly form new images. By becoming distorted or modified into many forms, the shadow imitates the original copy, the reality in a variety of shapes and at the same time, as daylight changes in small units of time, the imitated forms also change over time. Therefore, light and shadow take on the meanings of reality and illusion. As Jacques Derrida said, the shadow is contiguous to the reality that it is made from, so it represents that the reality exists, but at the same time, since it itself does not exist it is an illusion. By way of explanation, a shadow makes the viewer infer that a reality inevitably exists, but the copied illusion cannot be perfectly identical to the reality and the “simulacra that is continuously created is only presented by an outline of the subject, thus making it impossible to accurately recognize the subject.

Curiosity and Hopes over the wall reflects on translucent wall blocks. The changing figure of shadows is illusion but simultaneiously reality.

With light, a shadow is cast on the translucent wall and that shadow is constantly transformed into various shapes by the form of the subject, distance from the light source and time. It is a temporary illusion that cannot actually be touched and although it seems like it exists, it does not. Consequently, like the relationship between reality and illusion divided by the translucent wall, if an observer is positioned between something that can be trusted and something that cannot, he/she will become full of doubt over the reality (situation) on the other side, and question what separates reality and illusion. The observer recognizes and understands truth based on his/her knowledge and experience, so the truth can exist in different forms of illusions depending on the individual’s perspective. The light and shadow present to us the problems of social illusions and realities while raising the question of what actually determines the existence or non-existence of a shadow.

Sejong Design Plaza Seoul Gwangwhamun Square, Heart of CIty STUDIO 05 2015

Location Use Site Area BCR FAR Height

: : : : : :

Sejongno100, Jongro-Ku, Seoul Exhibition & Office 8349.6㎥ 60% (max. 60%) 500% (max. 600%) 68m (max. 70m)

Gwanghwamun Plaza locates on Sejongro Street, facing many kinds of facilities on the both side of street. It is time to put more cultural contents in. The site is very meaningful as a heart of South Korea. And a new culture plaza must be connected to the square intimately.

Gwanghwamun Square faces to the old placae of the Joseon Dynasty at the center of Seoul. But the square is a urban island because of surrounding dirve ways. That problem confronts to the role of buildings over the street.

(Up : NWside / Middle : NEside / Under : SWside)

In order to adopt geological, social and historical context of site into design, two urban axises corss each other over. So the contexts get the possibility of interpenetration to the building. Interference of each programs is considered by penetrating along axis and overlaped masses. Then twist the axises. East and west side of the site are in different urban circumstances so that the building heads no same directions. Moreover southside and northside of urban contexts are also different, entrance of cars must be at north but southside have to contain greens. These circumstances are accepted by dealing the actively twisted axises.

New urban context into site Pedestrian over the wide road will integrate into Gwanghwamun Square. Besides the steps of Sejong Culture Center are used as a stands for overlooking square. The other side also needs space that people move vertical like step stands. Squre makes dynamic events and needs vertically opened space for citizens. Completeness of place comes frome surrounding programs with sophisticated design. That is the way of making culture axis. Eastside open space is located with diefferent ground level between Junghak-stream and the building site. Pull the landscape into site and cross over culture axis. Sunken garden guides to rebound axis. And people follows to the direction of sight seeing. At the end, the context reach to the observatory deck with cultural and artistic sequences.

- Understanding automobile circulation, con sider parking ramp and cargo area. - Concerend with USA embassy building to be a culture space soon.(Purple building) - Width of Kyobo building(Green) and KT building(back) is the key of office mass volume(skyblue) and atrium.

- Void of Sejong Culture Center charcterize the urban void to the Square. - Both side of square become stands for overlooking crowds, but not exactly same space. - Top of the office is Rooftop restaurant for city life.

- Different space use of rooftop at daytime and night. - Southern East greenery get space by pushing building to mainstreet enough. - Open space facing Kyobo Tower at Southside is linear garden. And ground level space at Eastside which meets Junghak Stream becomes small square for roaming and rest so that continues into South tower mass.

View of over the street, landing stepts at Sejong Culture Center. Between two urban stands, Gwangwhamun square expand its boundary.

Square Level : Pedestrian approach, Reception, Administration, Automobile, Open scape facing the SQUARE

Urban Context flow along culture axis. Lifted mass provides a space for vertical circulation to citizens.

Underground passage Gwanghwamun Square

Gwanghwamun subway St. line 5

Unnderground Passage Jonggak subway St. line1

Underground Level : Underground passage to square, Link to subway, Sunken balcony, Food court, etc.,

Back of the building, sunken garden confronts KT building, flows into human scale. Facade and voids in urban condition are important though it face the opposite of Square.

North Tower The north tower becomes standard of composition regarding to programs. At low level, there will be reception and cargo handling area with automobile circulation. Upper level will be storage related to cargo handling area and horizontal gallery. Above storage will be office and observatory garden. Set back mass concerns not only outdoor platform of middle level but sight through USA embassy which will beome cultural space. And gardens to surround ground level park and dry area of building equipment.

South Tower The South Tower leans heading to Gwanghwamun Square. Stair landings at low level face squares and connects sequence horizontally and vertically to Sejong culture center over the square and streets. Vertically stacked gallery provides new kind of open space and exhibition to square lacking of vertical expansion. Rooftop contains cookery and restaurant with linkage above office mass, operating as terrace garden at daytime but rooftop restaurante after sunset.

City facade makes various scenes according to the sun movement. Cantilevered gallery hang artworks that could melt into urban scenery. And top of the mass, the middle level of building support nature-like gardens.

Detroit Station For Arts Michigan Central Station Renovation Archmedium, Spain 14’

In the past, Detroit became prosperous with the growth of its large corporations in the city. Detroit however, failed to fill up the vacancy of the sudden outflow of these corporations which finally led to the unfortunate bankruptcy of the city Now The new industry for Detroit is Art. Instead of past large scaled composition, New Detroit Central station will be filled with small creative groups which can even be composed in one-man atelier.

01. Divide Programs

02. Combining

03. Extract

Every programs will be divided into the small scale which can work alone as a unit.

All small rooms like atelier, residence, cafe and showroom is mixed. There is no specific area composed in one program. Scattered programs can make a various case of meeting and the synergy that tiny groups organize new activities can not be predicted.

Artists’ spaces like atelier, residence and also bar, showrooms(which is in the city of new detroit central station) are moving to other empty areas of city occasionally.

04. Move Programs

05. Return to station

06. Affect to city

Artists once move to other area will stay there for a period of time and create their works affected from surrounding environment.

When the artists left their works and come back to the station, Detroit station can be restructured in new composition.

Artworks that artists left can affect to the surrounding area positively and if it is repeatedly happened, it can be spread to the whole Detroit area.

As more artists start to fill in the city with their art and creativeness, their home and ateliers will exist not only in the station but also move toward vacant part of the city for a period of time.

Arts and artistic activities created by artists at this period will be left at the region while artists will head back to the station. These artistic works will appear frequently and impact the whole city.

From the perspective of unknown artists, the idea of artists leaving traces behind through ateliers in the city becomes an opportunity for their work to be exhibited that can bring them fames. Furthermore, artists can participate in the social activities more actively as a lead position.

The cultural quality and satisfactory level of residents in Detroit rises due to many artistic exhibitions in the city. Streets become a new natural exhibition center and gathering area for citizens. Theses cultural influences will bring new energy to the city enabling the city to become a museum with many artistic works. At the end, the city would attract lot of tourists. With the people strolling streets frequently, Detroit can attract city infrastructures again and be an area which is good to live. Tourists will drift the city and various activities can make scattered events. The crime rate will decrease in the city and people will come back to Detroit to start their new lives.

Beerscape Beer garden, Villa Zarri Renovation YAC competition, Italy 17’

Building inside the Villa Zarri has lost its original program and contains purely functional structure. Through few characteristics found from the building, we will develop it to be the space to experience the culture of beer.

Conservation Repeatable roof structure in the original building is composed of certain lexicon and it’s seemed as Semiotic architecture of similarity. Unit-structure of the building is composed of unique surfaces allowing lights to enter through the shaft from large-space. Patterns above the orthogonal grid enrich the spaces in a slightly different manner than the program. The building conserves the past grid and put on new grid in order to let the lights that has been filling the space for long time, pass through the new space. Juxtaposition Structure of Original Building and the new program are two components of architecture composition. Separate system of the original building structure is utilized per unit of inside space. By conserving the system we allow it to be a structure as found. New linear program will be placed in a twisted angle than that of original lattice system. By juxtaposing the original system and the new linear program, visitors will strongly recognize the history of a building along with its visual contrast. . The programs are placed next to each other, however they contrast in nature. Walking through the narrow spaced area the visitors will experience rapid changes of the structure. The structure and program exists as a paradox by the juxtaposition of diverse architectural style. Pavillion Pavillion that can be built in a series follows the composing-method of the building. Formative lexicon based design of single unit rooftop will be on top and different dresser will be located in a juxtaposing manner. These will be located in the outside with various concepts where people can sit and drink beer and relax in the nature lying down. People can taste the beer outside and enjoy the Villa Zarri’s garden.

Design aimed to conserving the structure has semiotic elements of the existing building. That is, original texture and axis made by clearstory is maintained upon new program.

The newly modified grid system divides the space differently to the existing axis. Spaces are divided according to the programs and its juxtaposition with the existing axis allowing the beer culture facility and the existing structure to be seen independently in one structure.

New circulation over the juxtaposition of grid layer make another experience of old structure space and lighting.

Patching new circulation layer that has perpendicular axis at the new grid. People pass through the patched spaces, and it is composed with neutral program ; service area, vertical circulation and separated catwalk.

In contrast to the existing structure, the elevation of cafe and bistro are exposed towards the garden expanding the space and allowing more light towards the indoor area.

Fixed module with flexible installation make people stroll and feel old under nostalgic Villa’s garden.

For non-architects and clients, visualization could be best one of the best way to offer for understanding architect’s project. From historical building in Seoul to rural guesthouse renovation at Jeju, we made eidetic communication tool. These projects mean not only visualization but also historical recoding. For instance, Sugeun Park museum is built before usage of 3D modeling tools. So we sent modeling to architecture firm which do not have their modeling. Moreover the architect who designed this building already passed away, the most important factor was to preserve architect’s intention on modeling. Also Namseoul Art museum is built 100 years ago so that we should had checked all of the dimension for modeling.
