0.0 INTRODUCTION 0.1 General introduction

his Research Project will focus on the changing marine environment: How the living spaces of the marginal people in the coastal cities will change step by step, and take the palimpsest as the carrier, to record this possible "history". The pace of sealevel rise has accelerated with the accumulation of greenhouse gases over the past century. Based on the oceanography data in the middle Pliocene, which is widely believed by scholars to be the potential simulation of future climate1, this research project will focus on the period from 2020 to 2100, when the sea level will gradually rise by 8m. When this climate crisis becomes more severe and affects urban life, people's lives would be dramatically changed. Furthermore, these changes are what this project most interested in: how are they preserved in the form of memory?

Finally, as the result of the project, to find the form that can best show the connection between various spaces within the same building and a lengthy future â&#x20AC;&#x153;historyâ&#x20AC;?. This design will explore how section drawing as a traditional drawing form is maximized in the expression of spatial narrative.

ue to humankind's arbitrary plunder of the natural resources and changes in the condition of the earth itself, the current generation begins to face challenges brought by environmental crisis, which can be reflected in many aspects. In particular, the report number of SLR is high, which is closely related to the significant challenges it poses to the existing way of life. In its Fifth Assessment Report2 in 2014, IPCC mentioned that the global mean sea level (GMSL) would rise by 5298cm in 2100, which many experts believe is too conservative. Indeed, it is not easy to make accurate predictions environment. Because projections of the future are often based on analysis of past data, coupled with guesses of future potential challenges to existing models, this is a multi-disciplinary multi-dimensional large project. However, as an interior designer, how to respond to this potential environmental challenge will be the focus of the design. "Do not have thy cloak to make when it begins to rain", imagine the worst possible scenario before a crisis so that you can deal with it confidently when it begins. First, put aside time dimension and the realistic possibility, view SLR simulation map from the perspective of geography, when the GMEL rise to 4 m, almost 40% area is flooded in coastal cities, and the destruction of the sea up to 9 m can be devastating, almost 100% of the area is flooded, and even freshwater lakes will be swallowed up by the sea. With the disappearance of the city, the memory of the city will be forgotten. Nevertheless, this process is iterative step by step, not overnight.

In some science fiction/climate fiction based on scenarios of SLR, the authors tend to exaggerate the crisis. In The Drowned World3, London in 2145 is drowned, giant Triassic lizard, orgy plants and the black lagoon become the soundtrack of the city. In 2140, Manhattan was described by Kim Stanley Robinson as the "SuperVenice" and GMSL rose to 50 feet. The characters in the novel actively tried to adapt to the changes in their own ways in the city.4

Shanghai Shikumen

his project will focus on Shanghai. Firstly, Shanghai, as the author's native plac; secondly, due to the unique historical background of Shanghai, it has created a unique architectural form -- Shikumen Lilong House. The last reason is that in a city of tall buildings, the low-rise Shikumen buildings will be one of the most affected (4-1). 19th century to the mid 20th, due to political reasons, a la rge number of foreigners(include JG Ballard) came to Shanghai for economic and trade activities. They refer to the architecture style of their own country to build townhouse in The Shanghai International Settlement (where is now the most central area of Shanghai). What is interesting is these houses do not precisely define any architectural style, but blend, which can be un derstood as "half-blood" building. In the context of the city's modernization, the stock of Shikumen houses is decreasing, and these "nail houses" in the prime downtown area are faced with a dilemma: crowded living environment, poor sanitation, and living conditions that are increasingly different from those in the surrounding modern communities (4-2). For the government, decrepit buildings have only two options: demolishing or revise. In reality, the government chooses to demolish most of the buildings in batches, and only a few of the buildings whose structures have not been damaged (maintain the initial impression of construction) will be preserved. The rest of the (waiting to be demolished) are just going to take some remediation to make it look less dangerous. In Edmund Spenser's poems5, the island is an oft-mentioned image, and he is fond of using "island" as a metaphor for politics.Â It is why the concept of "isolated island" formed (4-3). Apart from that, Gordon Teskey6 emphasizes some "moments" in the poem, that the poetic moment stops in the climax, which can leave the reader more time and space to imagine and reflect. 1/6

A small number of residents will move out after their financial ability reaches a certain level. At this time, some young people with relatively ordinary economic ability from other places choose to start their urban life here. Besides, the differences in the acceptability of technology were striking: some participants were very nostalgic, saying the objects contained ancestral memories and they are reluctant to leave; while the others were determined to abandon the obsolete products in favour of the newest and most popular ones (especially after the pass of the older generation). From this analysis, it can be concluded that some people still rely on physical objects to retain memory. his project focus on a topic that begins with urban infrastructure occupied residents' living space. The designers are trying to find a way for residents to negotiate with developers on an equal footing about the construction of high-speed rail stations. They chose to use 3D scanning and Virtual Reality (VR) technology to overlay the past, present and future in an immersive way for the inhabitants, with the park they are familiar with as the background. By telling stories with sound, they can retrieve the collective memory of the space about to past. In this project, the reflection of palimpsest is mainly reflected in the outcome. The designer mentioned the comparison between 3D model-based VR technology and traditional drawings in the interview. He said the traditional drawing style is abstract and is less effective than a 3D scene. This research project will reflect critically on how traditional drawing forms can stand out from the era of 3D renderings.

People continually alter the original buildings structure, for various incentives, such as house expansion, neighbours' activitis, or natural disasters. These everyday events are quietly recorded as the structure changes, waiting for someone to find a sealed door and be recalled one day. According to Sofie De Caignyâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s lecture10, what is going to be into the future of the city is more and more into the existing things and environments. Her book, "The Unfinished Past", tackles similar themes.In general, these changes can be divided into two categories, subtracting and increasing, which would be discussed in this project later.

For example, Albert Robida and Francois Schuiten they took the palimpsest as a guide in their creative processes and proposed an imaginary conceptual Paris. Albert Robida's painting depicts a futuristic vision that seems inconceivable even today, with a steel airship platform above Notre-Dame, Cafes, restaurants and station clock was stilted on the platform. These everyday objects, in Albert's illustration, they come to life so vividly. Francois encloses old Paris city under the glass dome, and people look down on the spaceship. This fictional vision poetically encompasses the past, present and future of Paris. Besides, his painting style is also worth mentioning, because he uses painting language similar to that of the 19th century to depict the outdated future. The idea of using paint to depict the change of living space over a period was inspired from here. Using the most traditional approach to present a fictional, uneventful future.

rchitect Ryan Lee12 discusses how the palimpsest, as an alternative methodology, become a tool to add new layers based on existing historic buildings' preservation, and also their possible future development. He made four moves/layers through the design process, 'weaving', 'wrap', 'weaving' and 'insertion'. These new layers can also work as a knot to link the fragmented memory with the future. Meanwhile, he questioned 'Which layers should we preserve/forget?'; it reflects the concept of voluntary forgoing of memory, the aforementioned "subtraction". It is crucial for preservation in architecture to maintain the memory in a period rather than only returning to a particular time point, which will also become a part of this research.

He divides his previous going of cities into four stages: "Sky city" in the 1960s," Computer city" in the 1970s, "virtual city" in the 1980s and "mirage City "in the 1990s. These theories of a half-century ago will be applied as the basis for each evolution/development of Shikumen housing in this project, to express that the progress of people living in Shikumen community lags behind the rapid development of the outside world.

In the context of rapid urban expansion, the city is faced with a severe shortage of land resources, urban elements are introduced into the design. On the spiritual level, when people think that urban space has reached a state of saturation, and they are continually facing new emptiness. Some fragments are filled in according to subjective and active imagination in the parts that are considered deficient. The concept of computer technology and aided facilities would be extended to urban and historical scopes. A city is covered with climate-controlled domes, and internal facilities can be intelligently adjusted to achieve a harmonious and effective stage of development. All the required functions are put together to build an urban microenvironment inside the building. It can be seen as a continuation of the 'Computer-aided City'. To make the building like a machine that integrates its internal spaces and functions to achieve dynamic harmony in the interior.

For example, Life Aquatic16, the production team built a complete section scene of the research vessel for films. There is one clip of the film traverses 70% of the entire set. This approach can not only save a long dialogue from the tedious but also allow the audience to have a complete understanding of the whole space. Each space on the ship has its function; they are independent of each other, in the physical space corridor, ventilation duct is the link between each space. Nevertheless, in the section space, the existence of the wall is weakened, and space is automatically pieced together.

The film explores four architectural spaces built over a hundred years and attempts to evoke a collective memory of cinema and hearing to imagine the bodies that were supposed to inhabit them. The family in the film is an abstract concept endowed by the state; the way people live is guided by the country/ruling class, which implies the prevailing attitudes, customs and hierarchies in the society.

hen one sees his hometown and grows up submerged by the sea, his heart should be filled with helplessness, just like this warm but despairing animated short film. In the background, the houses piled up layer by layer have a reasonable interpretation of the nostalgia and reluctance to give up their homeland. However, it seems that there is only one protagonist who does not feel willing to completely give up the memory of the past and choose to stay in this ruins. In the warm way of recovering the forgotten memories, this animation also reminds the audience forcefully to pay attention to the power of climate change; do not wait for the irreversible situation and regret. The second picture depicts the changes in the house as the sea level rises step by step in the animation. Existing parts are left intact instead of being demolished, leaving space for the future to look back. This Plot setting can be seen as another reflection of the palimpsest. This animation works as the primary source of inspiration to produce an animation in this design.

he plantation scene is often seen in doomsday science fiction movies since food is one of the essential elements to sustain life. Imagine that as sea levels rise, coastal lands are flooded, and farmland disappears, followed by a shortage of food resources. At that moment people might start thinking about productive agricultural activities in usable space, like in The Martian and Interstellar build their plantation, but they all seem to represent people who have science and technology.
