COCKATOO ISLAND M.O.P.A MUSEUM OF PACIFIC ART & CULTURE BDES2020 ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 202

01

The project aimed to provide public exhibition spaces for Pacific art and culture in the specific site, Cockatoo island. Restoring the original form and topographical characteristics of the landscape, it achieves to keep the identities of its locality that may soothe the savage loss in the history of Pacific art. At the same time, it also sublimates those missing pieces and memories of the site into the creation of conceptual context for the building. Filling up the underground void with new programs and functions, it provides different ways to view and understand the site that has been hidden and unnoticed for ages long. The gallery space tend to frame the quality of time and space to keep strong connections with the art and journey.

In the old days, the Milk Dock and Parchel office kept the part of the Flinders street station, the heart of Melbourne CBD, very busy. In order to revitalise the area by leading more population to come and stay, it is designed in the function of public square and museum. Long strips of rooms are often used as a main design language of the building that draws people into the service area where they can remain with a depth of privacy and dominant views towards the station and old administration building. Also, the exhibition spaces and monuments are situated in the railway level for appreciating the heritage of the site and it provides such overwhelming views of the moving trains running along the width of the building.

The project is to build a multi purpose hall that includes an indoor basketball court with a few other service rooms and external verandahs. The site is surrounded by the several number of national parks that would be potentially used in recreational purposes such as outdoor sports or picnic. Considering the intimate relationship with the environmental conditions, the building is widely opened for views and access to the outside. It also aimed to maximise the passive design effect and energy solution.

The design proposal of the facility was developed throughout various analysis of the building structure and construction methods. It mainly uses plywood box beam portal frame that the whole structure is braced in box sections to achieve large span and free space. In order to investigate its structural efficiency and quality, a number of physical testing models in many different scale were produced. Also, the section details were drawn to help for a better understanding about the final building structure.

The design process involves the influences of two films that explore the ambiguity of identities and memories in between the present and past time. Developing the scheme to the architectural proposition, it uses cut-outs and folds of building elements as a concept to suggest experiences of light and shadow that adds a depth in the spatial quality. Through the transition and variation of the form, it provides such dramatic views and atmospheric effects that help the function of spaces as Cinematheque. By walking along and through each room that consists of geometric composition, It introduces the architectural attempt of creating the interrelation between the structure and experience. The specific repetition is also used as a language to reinforce the architectural expression.

Interior view - resting area

The project is to provide a shelter for the group of people in social minority, a group of teenage mothers who struggle by many problems occured in the situation. Considering that the life as pregnant in early age would bring such serious depression and uncertainty about themselves, it aimed to create a space of emotional healing and comfort in which they can possibly find the sense of belonging and security again. The round and fluid shapes are mainly used in the building design to symbolise the maternal love that suggests intimacy with cares both physically and emotionally. The Openings are oriented towards the busy roads of the university campus so it contineously builds a connection with the outside world while their privacy and security is still kept strongly inside of the building.

#1 THE GARDEN; OPENING

The project is about an architectural interpretation of the story ‘Alice in Wonderland‘. The film mainly deals with the view and experience of Alice in her dreams of Wonderland. Exploring, Building and Rendering spaces such as hallways, tunnels, corridors and mazes are about all different worlds: just like a dream. One is lost in these mysterious spaces where there is no end while the shadow of the white rabbit is the only key constant. It links the scenes together as it leads to the next dreamscape until the ticking clock herad at the start and at the end of the film, a hint of Alice on the verge of waking up. Unlike architectural process, this project allowed me a chance to plan and create such surrealistic spaces that are full of dramatic and fictional expressions.

THE LOST THINGS

The artwork was installed at Mungo Scott Silos situated in Summer Hill; Artist distirict for site specific art projects. The found objects, various industrial artefacts, were collected around the old and abandoned factory buildings where they were kept in the sense of loss and darkness for a long time. Making a series of small vacuum formed organic objects, ‘The Lost Things‘ aimed to invade the space within their great power of presence. Installing electric motors and LEDs made them vibrate and flicker in time so the audiences can respond to its action as soon as they find it. Throughout the process of creating this artwork, it required a deep understanding towards a specific space in both architectural and aesthetic concepts.
