BLUE GROUND ; Regeneration of Tongyeong Dockyard

Small towns, industrial shipyard, natural hills, seas, and islands; All of these artificial and natural environments have been blended with each other, created a unique identity of Tongyeong. Within this city, the Shina Shipyard had taken an important role in the local economy. However, the shipyard closed in 2015, and the economy of the whole surrounding area also has been declined. On this abandoned shipyard area, Blue Ground was planned to make urban regeneration while keeping the existing natural/urban context of the city. Therefore, Blue Ground aimed to accomplish two seemingly contradictory goals at the same time; restoring the original natural condition while keeping the industrial identity of the old shipyard area. To accomplish these goals, at first, we suggested to restore the existing coastline and to make the site as the one of an archipelago. Moreover, we reused not only the existing buildings but also the urban fabric and building typologies of the site.

PHASING PLAN Chronological Urban Regeneration

In urban regeneration, considerate plan of phasings and timeline is essential, to accommodate diverse opinions while allowing locals to be actively involved in the project. The project suggests the dynamic regeneration process, which will interlink our project with the existing local community. It will make this project create sustainable urban revitalization.

Pre-Phase Kick-off Condition Before launching a huge scale of the master plan, we can organize smaller spatial interventions through Kick-off programs. These programs will allow the project to make interrelation with the local community, which will be the asset for the sustainable revitalization of the area.

Phasing 1,2 On-going Process Concerning the master plan site, Knowledge Sharing Hub and Markethall will be built, which will take a role as the place for creative production. Moreover, the Kick-off programs in before stage will create the vitalized street, which will generate Catalyst Effect on the whole area.

Phasing 3,4 Possible Future The pre-shipyard site will become Blue Ground, the cultural archipelago that will provide the place to meet the ocean and produce creative culture. Moreover, this development will bring urban regeneration of the surroundings, which will extend to all region of Tongyeong city in the future.

Hotel on the Ocean (up) / Loft Garden on Knowledge Sharing Hub (down)

As an architect, I had participated in several roles such as building design, 3D modeling, producing drawings, and revising images. Concerning building design, my knowledge in adapted reuse design were used in designing Knowledge Sharing Hub cluster. I also actively involved in designing the Ocean Hotel and apartment buildings. Those building designs were made as 3D modelings. Based on this 3D modeling work, I also produced several drawings such as phase diagrams, while taking part in a role of revising the final images with the visualization team. Moreover, I deeply involved in the role of making interpreter between KCAP and Korean local offices, and writing the part of the text for the final report with English and Korean version at the same time.

; Reforming Bamiyan Cliff into Pavillion Plateau Remembering

Heaven

Reforming Bamiyan Cliff into Pavillion Plateau When the Alexander the Great has entered Persia and this area to expand his empire, he was inspired by the King’s welcoming prop, which is the tent painted the heaven underneath. Since then, this region became the place of welcoming and hospitality as a cross bridge between the East and the West. However, the marginalization from the modernization did not enable to prosper the cross fertilization of welcoming culture. In our design of this cultural center, the desire of reviving history is envisaged as the reformation of prototype elements such as arch, vault, cubic mass, water and landscape. Their autonomous shapes are architecturally modified following the contemporary use the orientation toward the Bamiyan Cliff. Cave Qala (Main Vault) “Cave Qala” is the main place where the view toward the Cliff is envisaged, the gathering among cultural spots and educational rooms happens, and informal activities can take shape. We named this vault as “Cave Qala” since this space has both spatial qualities like a cave and “qala” that means a place of gathering in this region. This new place will act as a public space that activates “a space of appearance,” and “a space for open society” that merges diversities as one society. Cultural Bazaar Continuing the concept of “Cave Gala”, Bazaar prototype is implemented in this site since this cultural center will operate as a place of social gathering. Cultural bazaar can be made inside the building complex since many rooms are not closed but can be open to shape a connection between spaces. As well, small pavilions will operate as a key element that triggers the shaping of cultural bazaar. Shallow Valleys (Hanging Garden) Since the site and its region do not contain enough water to prosper vegetation, the natural water collection is recommended physically and socially. The cultural center stands itself on a barren landscape but turns into a shallow water reservoir in the given area with the collection of waters in the site. At the same time, the water from the river will be jetted on the site in order to re-configure the mysteries and realities of the site as a hanging garden. In the view from the Bamiyan cliff, one can overview the jetting of water and accumulating water through observing the growth of vegetation. The site itself becomes a mysterious hill of shallow valleys.

The project was the international competition for Bamiyan Cultural Centre. Bamiyan region became the place of welcoming and hospitality as a cross-bridge between the East and the West. However, the marginalization from the modernization did not enable to prosper the cross-fertilization of welcoming culture. To be specific, I was involved in floor plan design, making 3D modeling, circulation diagram, and revising several drawings and images.

EPIPHYTE SEOUL ; Re-constructing Seunsangga Citywalk

The project was held for the international competition for Re-structuring Seunsangga CityWalk. Epiphyte Seoul means an air-city that is connected via elevated decks and bridges like Seunsangga. Seunsangga has been a mega-structure that sits on the existing city with minimal connection to the city fabric, and has disconnected the existing streets. It has remained as a foreign structure in the city. The idea of epiphyte is required in situating Seunsangga as a renewed device that can interconnect the underdeveloped surrounding area and eventually restructure the implanted Modern urbanism of Seoul. This plan proposes a connective nature and culture in revitalizing Seunsangga deck based on “epiphyte concept to create a walkable city. Alternative Architecture Lab(A.A.L.) participated in the team, mainly dealt with the whole general concept and architectural design parts. I, as a junior researcher of A.A.L., aid my effort on the investigation of the site analysis, the idea of Epiphyte, and architectural strategies. Also, as part of the design team, I drew the several drawings and participated in diagram works.

5 strategies of Epiphyte Urbanism are proposed at Seun to reconnect separated urban fabrics and revitalize the underused mega-structure.

EPIPHYTE ARCHITECTURE ‘Epiphyte Seoul’ with enlivened Seunsangga was the project that was a testing bed for a new form of culture, industry, and nature in the walkable city. After the competition, the idea of ‘Epiphyte’ had been improved with my individual research, and it the result was my master thesis, ‘Epiphyte architecture: a study on an alternative method as architectural regeneration,’ which also affected to Msc2 course project, ‘Epiphyte of Memory.’ In this regards, this project not only proofs my experience in the competition of professional field but also shows my ability in combining research and design works.

INTERACTION INBETWEEN ;the reinterpretation of Centraal Beheer Office

How to recolor the new function and the context on Centraal Beheer Office, the icon of Dutch Structuralism Architecture?

The graduation studio is dealing with Centraal Beheer Office, designed by Herman Hertzberger, one of the most representative Structuralism Architects. What is notable in Structuralism architecture, including Centraal Beheer Office, is that they already inherit the possibility of modification in themselves with the response of changing future requirements. Related to this characteristics of Centraal Beheer Office, the project set the position on adapted reuse design as ‘keeping the rule while breaking the rule’; more precisely, modifying the existing situations while reusing the underlying architectural principle of Herman Hertzberger. Through this methodology, the project aimed to make a reinterpretion of Centraal Beheer Office. With the new program, Art Academy, the project aimed to 1. how to retrieve the publicness of Centraal Beheer Office, 2. how to accommodate the new program, and 3. how to improve the comfort of the building while keeping the existing value of the building. Based on these purposes, the design strategies of this project consists of three parts.

MASTER PLAN

connect with the urban context

apply spatial elements for interaction

extend the inner spatial logic

create greenery zone

The essential aspect of the master plan is to retrieve the publicness of the building. To accomplish this goal, one of the vital tasks is connecting the building with the urban context. Creating the new main entrance by demolising existing parts was taken into consideration. Through this process, it will be able not only to make the building more recognizable from the city but also to link the building and the city.

IN-BETWEEN : THE SPACE AND THE FUNCTION Spatial Reorganization

Though it was designed based on the idea of Individual Interpretation, the spatial organization of Centraal Beheer Office was more customized for office program. Therefore, to accommodate the new program, Art Academy, into the building, it was necessary to reorganize the spatial system of the building. To apply the concept of ‘interaction’ to the architectural design, the project suggested the spatial elements that could create interaction among the people. These elements were applied into in-between space, the gray zone where could create unexpected interaction.

Public zone

The public zone was planned as linear form to improve the way-finding of the building. It consists of several types of spaces, from large stairs to the greenery open space.

Gray zone

The gray zone is designed as semi-public and semi-private space, which are mostly planned as flexible spaces that could be differently used by the demand of users.

Private zone

The private zone is mostly planned as the studio space for each of department. They are located on the side to ensure the natural light and the privacy.

SMALL NEIGHBORS revitalization of neighborhood

Collective Housing Mariahoeve, Den haag, NL

Too wide road, irresponsibly open spaces make, and the contrast between public and private; these are the reasons why Mariahoeve is losing its human scale. They caused the lack of the sense of community between neighbors. Therefore, it was necessary to form small units of neighbors. This ‘small neighborhood’ will work as a unit that decides the residential block. To develop the social intercourse in Mariahoeve, collective spaces were planned for those units, which will not be easily exposed to unspecified individuals. Throughout these, the collective space will provide the room for communication among neighbors. It would bring the concept of ‘neighborhood’ back, which has been absent for years in this desolate area.

How to create the neighborhood unit that could provide the sense of belonging to the town?

URBAN TRANSFORMATION PROCESS

create new open space

seperate car road and pedestrian street by extruding a block

make a block protected from outside

divide a block by small alleys

BLOCK DESIGN PROCESS

set back upper floors for spatial quality of collective area

set back to make collective area more concentrated

detach each houses to make visual connection with outside

The site is Reigersbergenweg, the road that is planned too broadly compare to its actual usage. The project began how to rightsize this road and bring the sense of community on here. To begin with, the transformation process in the urban scale was planned, and as the following process, a housing block was designed on an architectural level.

EPIPHYTE OF MEMORY the new cultural center of Treebeek

Cultural Center Brunssum, Netherlands

After mining collapsed, the identity of Treebeek as the mining town have been diluted. These days, the past and the present of Treebeek are showing a discrepancy between each other. The current social problems of Treebeek such as loneliness and loss of identity are caused from this dissonance. For these reasons, this project suggested the way utilizing St Barbara’s church as the new cultural center of Treebeek as the mediator which correlate the remembrance of the past and the new memory of the present. This building could be the new basis for the memory of the future, which will be accumulated in the next generation of Treebeek.

“Let St Barbara’s church grows in the environment of Treebeek” Epiphyte Architecture Epiphyte architecture is a design methodology that ‘adding new architectural elements onto existing buildings and creating complementary and symbiotic effects through their organic relations.’ Through this methodology, it would be able to set the new relationship between St Barbara church and the new intervention as an equal relationship instead of hierarchical one.

NEW LAYERED LIBRARY

CAU Bsc 4 (2013.09-12) prof. Yoonkyeong Choi Library Seoul, South Korea

The project aimed to built a library into hongdae street, where is extremely active and commercial area. To design a library for this characteristic street, it was necessary to rethink of the library program from different angle. As the way to harmonize the library program and Hongdae street, the required activities of the library were rearranged. Based on this rearrangement, the spatial layers of the library were reorganized. Through this process, the project was designed as the new type of library, which could become the spatial prototype; the library for the places where the library program seems not suitable.

This library building is divided into 3 layer; public, transfer, and private layer. Public layer is facing outside world directly, functioning as auditorium, cafe and rest place. Tranfer layer is located between public and private layer, consisted of ramps which forms architectural promenade in this library. Private layer provides quite carrel space, protected from outside world. To indicate these spaces of different characteristics, various types of materials are used to express own character of each spaces. Especially for facade, curtain wall system was applied not only to show the inside space to the outside, but also to introduce natural sunlight into the building.

This project was proceeded under the subject of ‘Adapted Reuse’. I aimed to reflect the urban context of Jongno in architectural design. By strategies for revitalization, I purposed not only mere adapted reuse of existing building but also to make my building to be a seed of ‘revitalization’ of this area. Also, by applying Korean traditional architectural language to design, this building would represent the historical context of this site.

COUNTER MONUMENTALITY Korean war and separation are not to commemorate, but to be embarrassed. Therefore, instead of beautifiying, the memorial should allow us to experience how painful these memories were. The honest description of pain from Korean War will ironically present the value of peace. Therefore, it should not be beautified and wrapped in good. It should allow us to see how painful these memories were. Panmunjom is the symbolic place where could symbolize the ‘separation.’ The honest description of pain from Korean War on this place will ironically present the value of peace.

how should Korean War be remembered after the unification of South and North Korea? The project is along with ‘Wounded Valley,’ dealing with the same subject on a different scale: Memorial Park. Through these different approaches, I aimed to make an architectural experiment on how the same analysis result could be realized as different design results. By marking the main battles points and drawing lines between Panmunjom and the points chronologically, the line becomes a memorial path, inscribing the history of Korean War on Panmunjom.

The site is Gangnam area where is surrounded by big scale of apartment buildings. Therefore, it was important not only to follow the existing context but also to break the monotonous huge grain of the site. For this reason, the purpose of the project is to create village-like cultural center. Related to this goal, we planned to scatter small cultural facilities around the big one. Through harmonizing these different types and scales of facilities, it would be able to create synergy effect between them and to enlarge cultural influence to the surroundings.
