INTERACTION INBETWEEN ;the reinterpretation of Centraal Beheer Office

program: Art Academy Apeldoorn, Netherlands

The graduation studio is dealing with Centraal Beheer Office, designed by Herman Hertzberger, one of the most representative Structuralism Architects. What is notable in Structuralism architecture, including Centraal Beheer Office, is that they already inherit the possibility of modification in themselves with the response of changing future requirements. Related to this characteristics of Centraal Beheer Office, the project set the position on adapted reuse design as ‘keeping the rule while breaking the rule’; more precisely, modifying the existing situations while reusing the underlying architectural principle of Herman Hertzberger. Through this methodology, the project aimed to reinterprete Centraal Beheer Office., and make the building regain its architectural meaning while catching up with

the new requirement of the present.

Spatial Reorganization : In-between the Space and the Function

Broadening Innerstreet : In-between the City and the Building

Current Problem Analysis Centraal Beheer Office is currently disconnected from the city center and its surroundings. After the insurance company moved to another region, now the building remained a forgotten ruin of the past with its rigid spatial system. Since the building was built in the 1970s, it also shows a lack of consideration for sustainability. However, this building is the most representative project of Dutch Structuralism architecture and Herman Hertzberger. Therefore, the creative solution for an appropriate way of reuse the building is now becoming more essential.

Interaction In-between One of the main purposes of this project was to respect the most important design concept of Centraal Beheer Office; ‘interactions’ and ‘in-between spaces’. Based on this approach, I extracted various architectural elements that could create the interactions in the building and aimed to apply those elements into the in-between spaces of the existing building.

Centraal Beheer Office has been ‘a lonely island,’ disconnected from the surroundings and remained as a lonely island of the city. Therefore, it was essential to retrieve the publicness of the building. In Apeldoorn, there are several cultural buildings designed by Hertzberger as well. By linking with these buildings, it will be able to create a ‘cultural backbone’ in the city. To accomplish this goal, creating the new main entrance by demolishing existing parts was taken into consideration. Through this process, it will be able not only to make the building more recognizable from the city but also to link the building and the city.

Ground floor level

Related to the idea of the urban axis, the project broadened the inner street of Centraal Beheer Office. Through this design, it will be able to be linked with its surroundings and bring people into the building. This process was held under the motto, ‘keeping the intension of inner street, while breaking the existing form.’

New Program : Art Academy As the new program of the empty building, Art Academy was chosen as the new program based on the several aspects. It will function not only as an academy itself but also as a cultural centre that could provide diverse types of cultural activities and public space for the people. The new program distribution follows the existing plan, the public function on the ground floor and academy on the upper level.

Public zone

The public zone was planned as linear form to improve the way-finding of the building. It consists of several types of spaces, from large stairs to the greenery open space.

Gray zone

The gray zone is designed as semi-public and semi-private space, which are mostly planned as flexible spaces that could be differently used by the demand of users.

Private zone

The private zone is mostly planned as the studio space for each of department. They are located on the side to ensure the natural light and the privacy.

Though it was designed based on the idea of Individual Interpretation, the spatial organization of Centraal Beheer Office was more customized for office program. Therefore, to accommodate the new program, Art Academy, into the building, it was necessary to reorganize the spatial system of the building.

Double Facade Because of its poor quality of sustainability, the project applied a double facade scheme to the existing building. Through this scheme, the project aimed to achieve 1. improving sustainability, 2. remaining the spatial concept of Hertzberger, and 3. creating attractive in-between space. The double facade will create the juxtaposition of the old and the new, which will provide the continuous flow of the time to the building.

EPIPHYTE OF MEMORY the new cultural center of Treebeek

cultural center Brunssum, Netherlands

After mining collapsed, the identity of Treebeek as the mining town have been diluted. These days, the past and the present of Treebeek are showing a discrepancy between each other. The current social problems of Treebeek such as loneliness and loss of identity are caused from this dissonance. For these reasons, this project suggested the way utilizing St Barbara’s church as the new cultural center of Treebeek as the mediator which correlate the remembrance of the past and the new memory of the present. This building could be the new basis for the memory of the future, which will be accumulated in the next generation of Treebeek.

“Let St Barbara’s church grows in the environment of Treebeek”

added part

To link the past and the present of the town, the essential part was to balance between keeping the church’s characteristics and adding the new intervention with community center program. Through the

complementary and symbiotic relation between old & new, it will be able to ‘epiphyte’ the memory of the past to the present, which will create the continuity of time of Treebeek.

SMALL revitalizatize the community in Reigersbergenweg

Residential

Too wide road, irresponsibly open spaces make, and the contrast between public and private; these are the reasons why Mariahoeve is losing its human scale. They caused the lack of the sense of community between neighbors. Therefore, it was necessary to form small units of neighbors. This ‘small neighborhood’ will work as a unit that decides the residential block. To develop the social intercourse in Mariahoeve, collective spaces were planned for those units, which will not be easily exposed to unspecified individuals. Throughout these, the collective space will provide the room for communication among neighbors. It would bring the concept of ‘neighborhood’ back, which has been absent for years in this desolate area.

How to create the neighborhood unit that could provide the sense of belonging to the town?

Reigersbergenweg before

Reigersbergenweg is way too wide compared to their little usage, causing an abandoned area without any usage. Therefore, it is necessary to think of creating a collective area where people can gather. To achieve this goal, the project set the urban framework to rightsize Reigersbergenweg. Through creating the open space, the residential block will be planned as the place where people can dwell and share a sense of community.

Residential Block Plan The project aimed to create residential blocks, which will function as small units of neighbours. This ‘small neighbourhood’ will become as a basic unit, and each unit will provide a collective space where people can enhance their sense of community. It would bring the concept of ‘neighbourhood’ back, which has been absent for years in this desolate area. This collective space was planned as closed space surrounded by 8 households to create a more protected atmosphere, which is opposed to the unspecified open space of Reigersbergenweg that is not in use.

NEW LAYERED LIBRARY

CAU Bsc 4 (2013.09-12) prof. Yoonkyeong Choi Library Seoul, South Korea

The project aimed to built a library into hongdae street, where is extremely active and commercial area. To design a library for this characteristic street, it was necessary to rethink of the library program from different angle. As the way to harmonize the library program and Hongdae street, the required activities of the library were rearranged. Based on this rearrangement, the spatial layers of the library were reorganized. Through this process, the project was designed as the new type of library, which could become the spatial prototype; the library for the places where the library program seems not suitable.

This library building is divided into 3 layer; public, transfer, and private layer. Public layer is facing outside world directly, functioning as auditorium, cafe and rest place. Tranfer layer is located between public and private layer, consisted of ramps which forms architectural promenade in this library. Private layer provides quite carrel space, protected from outside world. To indicate these spaces of different characteristics, various types of materials are used to express own character of each spaces. Especially for facade, curtain wall system was applied not only to show the inside space to the outside, but also to introduce natural sunlight into the building.

TERRA-SCHOOL

prof. Hayub Song Seoul, South Korea

The subject of the studio was ‘eco-friendly school’. Therefore, the design was proceeded under the purpose of providing green community place for students and locals. Also, as the starting point of design, the relationship between educational architecture and education system was strongly considered. So the project was proceeded based on its own education curriculum and materialized data of required programs, etc. In this regard, the ultimate goal of this project was to harmonize architectural design, sustainability, educational background; to realize the belief that ‘architecture space have to include social and cultural surroundings’.

DI-X ; Dutch Innovation Xperience - Floriade 2022

Floriade Expo 2022, International Horticultural Expo in the Netherlands, is aiming the ‘recyclable Expo’; the whole Expo site will become the urban district where people can live after the six months exhibition. Dutch Innovation Xperience(DI-X) is also designed based on the idea of the Expo; the structures and spatial module of the Expo exhibition buildings will remain, and it will become the apartment buildings after the Expo phase. During the Expo, the exhibition space will be on the ground floor. On the 1F, there is a huge green canopy that will provide a spacious urban terrace for the people who will visit the Expo. All the foundations, base structure, and the core for the apartment will be built already from this phase. After the Expo, the apartment buildings will be constructed on the remaining Expo exhibition space. It will accommodate a total of 39 households, and the ground floor will be used as commercial and restaurant. For the faster and more efficient construction, the building will be built with load-bearing CLT walls and slabs. NEW INHANG ; Harbouring the City

Incheon Inner port is the unique asset of Incheon city. While located in front of the old city centre, the project had been used as the industrial port and still keeping its own identity. Historically, it was the first trade port of Korea that opened to the western world. Therefore, the area had accommodated various kinds of foreign cultures and had combined those with the existing cultural context of the old city centre. It is evident that the project area possesses historical, cultural, urban value. With these unique value and context of the area, the project aimed to revitalise this industrial port as the special inner harbour, which will provide attractive waterfront space to Incheon city. Also at the same time, the project proposed the development that could harmonise with its surroundings and could achieve the coexistence with them. Role : preliminary research (site, history, industrial heritages), the whole design phase, producing the final booklet, 3D modeling (Rhino, Sketchup), plan and diagram (Vectorworks, Illusrator), producing physical models, administrating Expo exhibition

I had participated in this project from the beginning to the end, including preliminary research, design phase, and producing the final report. My knowledge in adapted reuse design was essential to making the study on the industrial heritage, which was highly required by the client. During the design phase, I participated not only in the design of the architectural building, but also in the master plan design of the Northern 1, 8 port area, close with the old city, and the South campus area.

BLUE GROUND ; Regeneration of Tongyeong Dockyard

Small towns, industrial shipyard, natural hills, seas, and islands; All of these artificial and natural environments have been blended with each other, created a unique identity of Tongyeong. Within this city, the Shina Shipyard closed in 2015, and the economy of the whole surrounding area also has been declined. On this abandoned shipyard area, Blue Ground was planned to make urban regeneration while keeping the existing natural/urban context of the city. Therefore, Blue Ground aimed to accomplish two seemingly contradictory goals at the same time; restoring the original natural condition while keeping the industrial identity of the old shipyard area. To accomplish these goals, at first, we suggested to restore the existing coastline and to make the site as the one of an archipelago. Moreover, we reused not only the existing buildings but also the urban fabric and building typologies of the site.

Longyuan park was once the glory of the old city centre. Though it is abandoned from the residents nowadays, the park still has great potential due to its river-borne location and history around it. Choosing this site to kick start Longgang River transformation put the question of how to deal with a city’s past in the centre stage. The design extracted historical culture and natural elements from the historical and industrial culture around Longyuan as inspiration, such as Tree root, city and village, traditional haka building, curved water and small mountains, etc. Along with the urban context of old Longgong region, the new roots growing from the Green Heart inherit the logic of this traditional fabric. The structure of the roots is used to instigate the renewal of the old town, protecting the cultural heritage and urban fabric structure, and injecting relevant cultural functions. On the site of the project, Koningin Wilhelminaplein, there are three existing buildings, Berghuisplaza, Fashion House, Modrome. After built at the Modernism period, 1960’s, they had been taking a significant role in the fashion industry of the Netherlands along with Fashion Center building. Concerning this historical background, the project aimed to utilize this historical/urban context of the site through preserving these three existing buildings. Instead of high-rise buildings, we planned to top up horizontal masses on the existing buildings, which is also from the intention to make the reinterpretation of the Modernism Architecture. Through this design, we are planning to create harmony between the old and new, building and nature, As an architect, I participated in this project in the initial design phase. The project was the international competition for Bamiyan Cultural Centre. Bamiyan region became the place of welcoming and hospitality as a cross-bridge between the East and the West. However, the marginalization from the modernization did not enable to prosper the cross-fertilization of welcoming culture. In our design of this cultural center, the desire of reviving history is envisaged as the reformation of prototype elements such as arch, vault, cubic mass, water, and landscape. Their autonomous shapes are architecturally modified following the contemporary use the orientation toward the Bamiyan Cliff. Since the subject of the competition was deeply related with the research subject in that period, Alternative Architecture Lab(A.A.L.) decided to participate in this competition by themselves. As a member of A.A.L., I took part in the role of the architectural design and producing drawings. EPIPHYTE SEOUL ; Re-constructing Seunsangga Citywalk

The project was held for the international competition for Re-structuring Seunsangga CityWalk. Epiphyte Seoul means an air-city that is connected via elevated decks and bridges like Seunsangga. Seunsangga has been a mega-structure that sits on the existing city with minimal connection to the city fabric, and has disconnected the existing streets. It has remained as a foreign structure in the city. The idea of epiphyte is required in situating Seunsangga as a renewed device that can interconnect the underdeveloped surrounding area and eventually restructure the implanted Modern urbanism of Seoul. This plan proposes a connective nature and culture in revitalizing Seunsangga deck based on “epiphyte” concept to create a walkable city. Alternative Architecture Lab(A.A.L.) participated in the team, mainly dealt with the whole general concept and architectural design parts. I, as a junior researcher of A.A.L., aid my effort on the investigation of the site analysis, the idea of Epiphyte, and architectural strategies. Also, as part of the design team, I drew the several drawings and participated in diagram works.
