A NEW ERA PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL graduation design of The Berlage In order to meet the changing paradigms of contemporary Chinese society, it is important, on the one hand, to rethink the traditional approach to middle school education and envision new type of student capable of meet these changing demands. On the other hand, it is important to investigate the role of architecture as a medium to foster these changes. This project seeks to dissolve the conventional boundaries between the school and the city, thus allowing a merger of functions and programs conventionally kept isolated from each other. The aim is to create a rich interaction between these domains, exposing students to urban life as part of their educational experience.

In the past three decade, Shenzhen is going through a rapidly industrialization which transforms it from a small village into a mega city along with its economic mode. With such changing trend, the expectation of school has changed from preparing people for manufacturing jobs only, to for both manufacturing and intelligent industry which required the ability of innovation. However, Schools in Shenzhen have remained almost the same for the past two decades, although demands for education in contemporary Shenzhen society is changing.

Diversifing school programs in order to break down the current isolation and monotonous school life of Shenzhen for the changed expectation for education, remains impossible under current education policy. In this proposal, I argue that the combination of educational and urban programs in an open space system could offer and alternative to such a predicament, offering diversification, interaction and communication between both domains.

The project opens to a new host of users in the neighborhood , from students, designers, IT experts, to housewife and the elderly. With the study of the daily life of potential users, a cluster of programs has been selected and transformed into multifunctional spaces to meet the demand of different people, creating opportunities for various interactions.

Basing on the research of the scale of the site and traditional Chinese architecture, the school would be organized as a cluster of units. This cluster is thought to dissolve the boundary of the school as well as the large scale building area presently required for middle school in Shenzhen. Moreover, by the establishment of sunken courtyards, teaching activities for current curriculum won’t be disrupted and security for students can be ensured in such open and dynamic school.

VERTICAL FARMING FOR THE FUTURE Project design of The Berlage The Noordoostpolder was set for agriculture industry when it was reclaimed from the sea in the twenty century, which attracted many young people coming here to make a living. However, as the development of modern technology, many farming works are done by machine nowadays leading to the lack of job opportunities in the polder and its decline. For the noordoostpolder, there is a possibility to revive it by developing the greenhouse modern agriculture which take advantage of its agriculture root, creating numerous job opportunities in the area. But it could cause the dramatic expansion of greenhouse, occupying vast of lands and breaching existing urban space.

As the horizontal expansion of greenhouse costs vast valuable lands and the liquid nutrition planting can reduce the weight of each floor, it is possible here to use vertical approach to develop greenhouse in order to avoid negative impacts of horizontal expansion. To ensure enough light. for plants, plan of each floor in the vertical greenhouse would be rotated to make numerous accesses for light. Because of the fluid nutrition planting method which leads to radical production increasement of each floor, the output of one vertical greenhouse is the same as the total output of 5 old greenhouse.

XUNBAO OFFICE BUILDING project leader Xunbao office building is the headquarter of Xunbao Packing Receptacle Co., Ltd in Shenzhen , which has developed rapidly in the past decade producing biodegradable receptacle as environmental awareness is increasing in the city. The site is located in an industrial park of the company with a land area of 1,1678 m2. Under the strict regulation, the maximum height of the office building cannot exceed 24 meters.

In order to take advantage of the construction of office building to diversify workers life, the proposal here provides various leisure and entertainment programs in the lower part of the office building, where workers can take a break during work hours, or enjoy time together with friends out of work. Meanwhile, the floors above would be accommodate different types of working space in scale to encourage group discussion at office while providing private spaces for people to work alone.

The office building is surrounding by a cluster of factory buildings with functional faรงade which contribute to the lack of life image of industrial park. In order to breakdown such atmosphere while integrating the office building into the surrounding, a folded plate approach is introduced in the project according to the demand of programs of the office building.

XIXIANG CITY COMPLEX project leader Xixiang city complex is one of projects aiming to take advantage of city expansion of Shenzhen in recent years. The project is consisted of commercial facility, apartment and office with a total of 25,00594 building areas counted into FAR. The height of buildings on the site is limited to 100 meter due to flight regulations for the nearby airport.

With the limits of the site, the proposal here creates three different space modes, offering traditional office towers on top and horizontal office volume in the middle where people have numerous working spaces as well as spaces for interaction and relaxation. On the ground floor, there is a commercial street open to the city, where office workers can engage city life in their busy working days. With approaches mentioned above, the city complex is not only a place for them to work, but also meet their daily life demands, creating leisure working atmosphere which is rare in other office complex in the city.

THE TWO TOWERS Designer (project design, technical drawing) In the project, architects are required to create two individual towers for two companies in one single block which is blocked from the outsider by a group of existing high-rise building. Here, the demand for two new towers in the central business district of Shenzhen, raises the issue of what kind of towers should be added to the skyline of the CBD.

By organizing the two towers as two different and very clear typologies based on their maximum height and programmatic requirements: Both of the towers are given a unique identity and the problem of the little brother is avoided. The active and public oriented programs is gathered close to the ground floor and visible from the surrounding public space. By shifting the volumes around the plaza a dynamic shaded and active public space is created underneath. This public space will create a clear identity to the two clients.

SHENZHEN CRYSTAL ISLAND Assistant architect ( technical drawing) Shenzhen is a high developing city and quickly becoming a great world metropolis that now accommodates a population of ten million since its development over the past thirty years. Because of the city’s great economical growth, Shenzhen has entered the next stage of city construction and social development. This project is located at the central point of Shenzhen, a site with the greatest profile in the city, aimed to be a symbolic space not only as a visual landmark but also as a greatly utilized urban space. Shenzhen has rapidly developed over the last 30 years since its designation of Special Economic Zone.

Facing the weak connection between south side commercial area and north side of municipal government building, weak connection between west side Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Port and east side metro line, no. 2 and 4. an uncovered ten meter deep sunken plaza is created in the center site to connect the complex underground urban system. This strategy is beneficial for public safety, bright and vibrant space, as well as operation cost.

Traditionally political plazas were constructed with rigidity in layout to represent the dignity and unity of the nation. Other citizen plazas such as Piazza del Campo in Italy is an approach that serves public fluidity for daily strolling, debate, annual carnivals, and many other cultural events. As a result of its natural topography, this plaza has a uniquely irregular shape and fluid form that’s configuration of the plaza reflects the activities of the plaza. Our proposal for the civic plaza is a carpet architecture that accommodates for a variety of activities by lending itself as a venue to display and experience the on going urban events.

Tracing the history of human civilization, from the pyramids to the Eiffel Tower, almost all the landmarks are needle-like structures. The shape of those landmarks will block the central axis of Shenzhen. Circle is the most harmonious form in nature. And circle will be the most suitable landmark for Crystal Island: not only the formation of visual center but also assurance of the permeability of axis. This gracefully revolving landmark will become a special experience for people to be lifted up from the ground and look down on they live, detaching them selves from daily life. The attraction to experience the future of Shenzhen together with the central location will establish the Shenzhen Wheel as both a spiritual and visual landmark.
