THE KNOTS STORY 2016.03-2016.05 Team leader/Concept Waterfront Space Design
We learn the rope of life by untying its knots. –Jean Toomer Knots are part of China’s long history, and prehistoric records attest to their use in recording all manner of important events. The site is in Fujian province, southeast coast of mainland China, where Chinese traditions still exit in daily lives. In the past, the residents used to make their livings on fishing. However, the situation changed after 2005 when the town became the main campus of the university. The construction of the campus led to the degrading of the river, the social inequity in and out of the campus, and the conflict between the university and the local residence. On the other hand, the local natural and cultural resources are largely underutilized. The project starts with the exploration of the concept of knotting in hoping that the rope not only ties the physical space but also serve as a social heal for the people. Bridges are essential connections in response to the fragmented waterfront. Several nodes are selected to help ease the intensity of the environment and its human settlers. By creating a web system from the knots (nodes), the project aims to provide public spaces not only for a certain group of users, but to serve as a communication space for everyone. The project acknowledges the fact that no problems can be solved all at a time. Instead, the project tries to research on the existing issues and provides potential solutions accordingly. Already in prehistoric times, Chinese knots were a symbol of harmony, strength, unity and love. The project challenges to re-claim the long-embodied culture of the site.

The design uses Fuzhou local saddle wall as the leading element to penetrate the park. Use walls, pavilions, and door openings as interfaces and nodes to guide the change of line of sight; combine the growth of plants and the position of trees in the site To arrange the road line type, and desire to create a classical park scenery。

设计拙见： 在建筑 / 景观领域，我们所做的工作或者目标更多的是处理人与环境的之间的关 系，或是修复，或是改善。总之人与场地（场所）缺一不可，无人之景是景色， 而无人之楼也不过是个空壳罢了。所以在设计过程中我更多会侧重于甲方或者使 用者需求及场地文脉等，这似乎是我本科学习景观为我带来的一个优势或者习惯。 对于目前的我来说，好的设计就意味着新与美，以此来提升人的幸福感。 竭诚希望能在贵司共同工作，学习。 Some Thinking: In my opinion,design means to deal with the relationship between people and the environment. In a word, people and places(space) are indispensable. So in my design process, I will focus on the needs of Party A or users and the context of the site primarily, which seems to be an advantage of my major at university for me. For me, good design means new and beautiful, so as to improve people's happiness. I sincerely hope to work and study in your company to create more new things.
