2020 i-dott Surface Pattern Design Competition Yearbook

2020

About i-dott Our aim as a charity is to help surface pattern design students to be more aware of the requirements and demands of the allied textile, fabric, and wallcovering industries for commercially designed artworks. Not only does the work need to have aesthetic appeal but it must be fit for purpose; does the design demonstrate the technical requirements and capabilities to go from a beautiful artwork to a bolt of cloth or a roll for wallpaper? Each year the number of universities we work with increases, both here in the U.K. and abroad; this year we have received submissions from 24 universities of which 6 are from outside the U.K. Despite the current global conditions, we received a record, 428 designs into this year’s competition. Compare that with 2019 when we received 356 pieces of work is a wonderful indication of the students and tutors’ determination and commitment to the i-dott Surface Pattern Competition. Every year we are impressed by the improvement in the quality and the ambition of the design submitted by the students, which make us firmly believe in a future filled with great surface pattern design. The sponsorship we receive each year from industry is very much appreciated and we would like to thank Cole & Son, Anstey Wallpapers and HP as our main category sponsors, who also take the time to write the design brief and take part in the judging of all the categories. The IGI the Global Wallcoverings Trade Association (head office located in Brussels) continues to support by offering an overall prize for best design submitted from any category. AVA CADCAM have also sponsored a place for a student from each of the categories on a 5-day course in CAD training skills. Sadly, we have had to cancel this year’s Gala Dinner, our night of celebration, due to the present coronavirus situation. However, we have already booked for 6th October 2021 at the Gorton Monastery and we will be inviting all this year’s winning students to join us along with the 2021 prize-winners to ensure they don’t miss out on the great networking opportunity this fabulous night affords them. i-dott Chairman John Carter Chairman of Graham & Brown Limited Please be aware that all images are the property of i-dott CIO and as such are subject to and protected by international copyright law. inspiring designers of tomorrow today

Board of Trustees The i-dott Charity was set up in 2013 to support, nurture and inspire surface pattern design students internationally. Through our annual competition, we offer surface pattern design students the opportunity to have their work assessed and critiqued by design experts. Our Judges are selected from all over the design world and collectively have many years of experience of working in all sectors of the market. Our board of Trustees, who have been with the charity since the beginning, have drive and enthusiasm as well a fundamental understanding of surface pattern design and of the requirements of the industry. Particularly with the demise of many of the great manufactures of the past who continuously employed an army of young apprentice designers to feed the market and push the limits of design, they recognised the importance of encouraging, developing and nurturing the Designers of the future – for all our futures. i-dott is committed to resurrecting this valuable and much needed tradition for the benefit of surface pattern design world-wide.

Annual Awards & Gala Dinner 2020 Sadly, we are unable to celebrate the success of this year’s winner due to the restriction imposed on us all due Covid 19 pandemic. However, we have already reserved the date of 6th October 2021 to hold a joint celebration of both the 2020 and the 2021 winners’ success. This is a great opportunity for our students to meet discuss with senior decision makers of the textile and wallpaper industries. These are valuable connections and could be the start of a longer-term working relationship with some of these companies.

Note to Winning Students: Please ensure that we have your up-to-date details on le to enable us to contact you in August 2021 with the event details.

The Bursary 2019 Prize was awarded to Kelly Louise Trainer My M.A. Journey - Textile Design Innovation at Nottingham Trent University Collaborating with nature, I carefully handcrafted and curated a collection of luxury, dynamic textile designs. Putting my own interpretation on what nature does, I’ve worked and connected with the natural environment through the use of organic dyes, rain, solar, snow and ice cubes. With an emphasis on sustainability, I used this nature-led process to help with the reduction of water wastage, pollution, global emissions and the promotion of eco-friendly, natural dyes. The simple beauty of my ‘Made by Nature’ collection is that each design is unique and perfect for the ‘design-led’ amongst us who are seeking innovative and one-of-a-kind textiles for their interiors, fashion and art. In this very unusual situation we have found ourselves in, we have been forced to slow down, adapt and make changes in our everyday lives. My work and my method of working, specifically in the last few months, is representative of this desire for quality over quantity, advocating a cultural shift towards slowing down and being present in the moment. Studying for my MA has improved my confidence and helped me develop an identity as a textile designer. I am currently making plans to launch my own business in the next few months where I will utilise all the skills and tools I have learned this past year, and thanks to i-dott, I have been able to push the boundaries, take risks and explore all of my possibilities. The i-dott bursary has enabled me to purchase the appropriate, sustainable and high-quality materials and equipment I have needed to progress and develop my collection, and as well as designing and creating my final collection, I have been able to develop my digital presence and collaborate with other designers and artists to work in new ways, minimizing wastage and embracing the digital world. I would encourage all surface pattern design students to apply for the i-dott bursary. There is a wonderful network of industry professionals behind the charity, always willing to help, encourage and inform. I’ve had a wonderful year of creating and making and I have grown as a Textile Designer; I am hugely grateful to i-dott for the bursary which has allowed me to pursue my ambition of studying for my MA in Textile Design Innovation. Kelly Louise Trainer MA with Distinction - congratulations!

From the students perspective Zoe Neill - Textile Design Student – Heriot Watt University I completed my first two years on a Heriot Watt associate programme at Glasgow Clyde College which gave me direct entry into the 3rd year at the university. I specialise in printed textiles and I am hugely inspired by illustrative styles of drawing; you will always find bright colours and patterns in my designs as they are extremely important to me in creating designs that pop and attract the eye. I will be returning to my studies to complete my 4th year to gain my honours in September this year. I was encouraged by my 3rd year lecturer to enter the i-dott competition and was pleasantly surprised to find out the design I had entered into ‘The New Zeitgeist’ category had been shortlisted in the first round of judging and then achieved a 3rd place in the final round. This competition has given me a huge confidence boost and I am extremely proud to have won a place in The New Zeitgeist category this year. In future I aspire to create a widely recognisable brand through my unique use of colour; to have my very own interior fabric design collections and see my hand drawn wallpapers being sold around the world.

From the educational side “The i-dott surface pattern design competition is an excellent opportunity for students to respond to industry led briefs in a variety of formats. Every year since the competition began, we have entered work from all year groups on our course. This enables our students to respond to live briefs from their 1st year of study. It’s such an important opportunity in the Surface Pattern calendar for us, we are always excited to read the new briefs when they are published ahead of term! We can’t thank i-dott enough for all the opportunities, professional training and experiences that students have won in the past, but this year we are truly blown-away with what they have achieved. To be so successful under such difficult ‘lockdown’ circumstances is such a wonderful result for our whole BA(Hons) Surface Pattern Design and Textiles family here in Swansea, UWTSD. Students are attracted to this programme because of the supported opportunities they get to undertake significant live briefs and competitions such as i-dott. Creative education constantly has to defend itself, it’s value to society, and the prospects we offer our students. Our students have proven themselves to be equipped to deal with adversity, to be multi skilled and to be versatile enough to carry on working through these unprecedented changes to their learning environment and triumph. They are highly creative, highly employable, excellent problem solvers – this is what the changing landscape of employment is looking for. After lockdown the plans to produce hand printed lengths of wallpapers quickly changed to a more digital outcome. It is fortunate that our programme delivers a complexity of digital design skills as well as in depth material, workshop based design skills – this sets our students apart. Employers tell us this. This is perhaps why UWTSD was voted best for Art in the recent National Student Survey(NSS) and why UWTSD is ranked No1 for Textiles and Fashion in the Guardian League Tables 2020.” Georgia McKie, Programme Manager UWTSD

Jason Gilliat Surface Print Company

A graphic designer by trade, Jason joined The Surface Print Company in June 2019. He has extensive knowledge of the digital process both in the creation of artwork and also in print. His time at Surface Print has ignited a new passion for traditional print processes which in turn has led to product developments combining traditional and digital techniques. Jason works with the design teams of some of the biggest brands in wallcoverings - expanding Surface Print’s client based in the UK, Europe the United States. He is keen to encourage new designers and by reducing the minimum order requirement to just twelve rolls (mixed patterns) at SPC he has developed the opportunity for independent designers to bring their work direct to market with minimal investment. Jason is delighted to be actively involved with this year’s i-dott event as first round judge.

Natasha Perry Design Manager Belgravia Decor Ltd

I manage the Belgravia Décor studio based in the North West of England. Within our small team we are all passionate about wallcoverings design and relish the dynamic studio environment. Belgravia Decor is owned by Zambaiti, an Italian heavyweight vinyl wallcoverings company. I absolutely love working within the great team at Belgravia and Zambaiti. I graduated from UMIST in Design and Design Management and since then I have been very fortunate to have worked in wallcoverings design for around 24 years. I thoroughly enjoy the creativity that the roles have allowed. Over this time, I have worked for a number of wallcoverings companies including Crown Wallcoverings, Holden Decor and Arthouse.

Robin Bancroft Design Technical Director Arthouse

12

Robin Studied textiles and surface pattern design at Stockport College and initially worked for Royal Doulton Table Ware as a junior designer. From there he started his career in wallcoverings that spans over 35 years. Forbo Mayfair based in the North East is where he gained valuable knowledge of the industry. After 11 years he then moved to Crown Wallcoverings where he spent 10 years as a Senior Design Manager creating product for the export department, the UK and National accounts. In 2002 he moved to Arthouse Ltd. becoming Design Director in 2005 and a shareholder in 2007. Currently his role is more on the technical side of wallcovering production but still has a passion for repeated design, especially wallpaper and printed textiles. Robin is experienced in all the varied types of wallcovering production and has knowledge of world markets and has travelled extensively to all the major export countries.

Final Round Judges 2020 Carely Bean Cole & Son Design Director

Carley began her career after graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Textile Design from Loughborough University. During her time at university she developed a passion for conversational designs and illustrations which is still reflected in her work today. Carley loves to tell a story, designing with a narrative to give a print character and reference. This includes some of the industry’s most iconic conversational designs, with prints that she designed for Osborne & Little remaining in their portfolio 15 years later. In her time there as Senior Designer she was a key member of their innovation team who pioneered printing on different substrates, such as holographic, as well as experimenting with grits and beads on wallpaper. Now, with 18 years’ experience working in the luxury interior furnishing industry, Carley’s obsession and passion for wallpaper, as well as her love for Cole & Son and its heritage has driven her to become the design house’s Design Director, stating “it’s my dream job as I live and breathe wallpaper!” Within her time in this role she has designed a host of best-selling illustrative designs, as well as built a highly creative studio; a team of exceptionally skilled artists who all have the same design ethos, drawing and painting everything by hand to reflect the detail and quality of Cole & Son, embodying the design house’s brand values of ‘Living Art and Living History’, continuing to push industry boundaries.

Jane Rixon Business Development Manager - HP

HP is proud to be a sponsor of the “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle” category at i-dott this year. As a company we are passionate about technologies that enhance people’s lives. We are also passionate about the environment and sustainability which is particularly relevant in today’s world. In 2020, HP has been named as the most responsible corporation in the USA by Newsweek. In a short space of time, digital technology has revolutionalised the traditional wall covering market, offering designers the chance to work with unlimited colours and no longer being restricted by repeat patterns. Businesses can respond to changes in fashion immediately and can produce short runs, holding less stock and being more flexible. As the market changes to being more “online” and “just in time”, digital will become increasingly important.Jane has worked for HP for 16 years in various roles, all within the Graphic Solutions Business. In her current role she has been involved with the decoration segment for the past 6 years working with a number of companies who have embraced HP Latex technology. Jane works closely with the HP development team in Barcelona to ensure customer feedback is incorporated where possible into new product from HP. Jane is on the board of Print Scotland, an association representing the interests of the Scottish print community.

Miles Thacker Design Studio Manager Anstey Wallpaper Co

Having initially trained in Fine Art at Doncaster College of Art, I began my working career as a Technical Draftsman moving from there into Technical Illustration. After several years working at a drawing board, which saw a period of time where I worked as a Technical Illustrator on archaeological excavations, I secured a position working in the design studio of Zoffany Limited, then based in Leeds. At that time Zoffany had its own short-run manufacturing capabilities and so I became increasingly involved in the product development cycle through the design phase and on into colour sampling and production. Following a factory relocation to Leicestershire I became more and more involved in the production cycle and so took up a design and sales development role at Anstey Wallpaper Company where I have remained to this day. During my time at Anstey I have held both creative and ‘commercial’ roles, with the latter taking priority in recent years, however my training and initial grounding in design continues to be a vital foundation.

Peter Townley Zing Design

Category 1 - A Captivating Conversational Design Brief Cole & Son has been creating original and exceptional wallcoverings since 1875. The inhouse design studio continues to produce innovative and timeless designs which reflect our long and distinguished history as well as our continuing passion for artistic design and quality craftmanship. The Cole & Son design studio is a hub of creativity more akin to an artist’s atelier. Ideas come predominately from the illustrator’s own photographs, taken on immersive trips to inspirational locations which inspire the narrative behind each design. Brief: To design an exuberant wallpaper with a strong narrative to inspire the imagination for years to come. Create a new and exciting conversational wallpaper, combining colour and pattern to produce a unique, distinctive and inviting wallpaper for the interior. Illustrate your hand drawn/painted skills in a original but disguised repeat. Inspiration: Your story telling could be taken from visiting a beautiful country with an immense culture, historical building with vast heritage or be inspired by the captivating beauty of nature. Repeat & Scale: The structure & scale of a repeat is what gives a wallpaper design its movement and defines how it balances when several drops are hung side by side on a wall. Ideally, we are looking for a fluid and seamless structure for your design. Scenes and conversational drawings can be tricky to place into a repeat, therefore consider the structure of your wallpaper to help anchor the novelty aspects within the repeat unit. Colour: No limitations! Cole & Son examples: ACACIA from The Ardmore Collection. The Acacia tree is an enduring sight in Africa with its bright yellow ‘fluff-ball flowers, and holds warm memories for Ardmore founder Fee Halsted. Having always had monkeys around her as a child, these humorous animals full of wit, pranks and intelligence have created a soft spot in her heart, and in turn have provided the inspiration for this striking new ‘conversational’ wallpaper painted by Cole & Son. CABARET from Whimsical Collection Cabaret is an enchanting wallpaper with a strong narrative, inspired by the classic fairy tales of youth. With its carnival imagery and colouring, featuring whirling dancers and entertainers it is reminiscent of vintage illustrations found in childhood story books. inspiring designers of tomorrow today

Category 2 - Reuse Reduce Recycle Design Brief “reuse-reduce-recycle” Embrace these three words! Whilst creating your finished artwork you will need to experiment with the usage of leftover materials, the reuse of what others consider garbage and the creation of innovative materials and trends. Using what we have and making it go further, we are going back to the old way of thinking, the time after the WWII when there were shortages of things, people had to make do and mend, this was a great time for invention as it made people get creative and inventive. Bringing us back to our roots and learning not to be wasteful. For our 2020 i-dott brief you will need to embrace greener and more sustainable initiatives, within the meaning and creation of your art - creating exquisite beauty and style but without the harmful consequences for nature. Your artwork should encourage the interiors industry to create unusual and new materials based on recycling, alternative technologies and a well-balanced approach between nature and technologies, whether you promote for example - the recycling of electronic components and auto-technologies, or the usage of recycling plastic, especially considering the enormous amount of plastic found in oceans and water bodies all over the world! OR create a thought provoking artwork to illustrate the massive message of “reusereduce-recycle” . Practically this can be achieved by collaging recycled materials or creating an image in 2D to ‘visually’ encourage discussion, raising awareness and social consciousness about the ecological problems threatening our planet. Happy recycling!

Category 3 - The New Zeitgeist Design Brief Up-cycling, re-cycling, renovation and repurposing has allowed creators to take already used objects and breathe new life into them, turning them into ‘contemporary’ items that are entirely relevant to the times we are now in, rather than the times in which they were first produced. Taking this same approach, how would you visually (and thought-provokingly) upcycle, recycle, repurpose or reimagine already used styles of wall design to make them relevant to 21st century culture? Would a Toile de Jouy depict a pastoral scene, or a crime scene? Would a Zuber scenic depict the age of empire, or the age of globalisation? Would a classic Damask use Acanthus or Coca leaves as prime motifs? Would a tropical design celebrate the rain forest, or despair at its deforestation? Would an architectural design acclaim the avenues of Paris & Rome, or the towers of Dubai and Kuala Lumpur? Using classic surface design layouts and styles, including but not limited to those illustrated, re-imagine them to utilise contemporary themes and motifs. Explore the Zeitgeist. Celebrate modern living. Celebrate new methods of creation not previously possible with pencil and brush. Be bold of thought!
