Jinyoung Choi 최 진영 I am a challenger, and an over-achiever who always try to find something more in everything that I am committed to. As an architect, I strongly believe architecture is based on humanism and it has to aim for what is more creative and functional than what is more artistic.

This project is a mixed-use site with unobstructed views towards the West Lake. The brief called for a destination that brings a strong Hanoi identity and local narrative whilst offering commercially viable retail, office, hotel, and civic spaces. Occupying an area of 360,000 m2, Benoy’s design features two grade-A office towers, six levels of retail, a hotel, a SR and ample civic and landscaped spaces. An events hall, theater, a kid’s zone, a food quarter and cultural street are all included in what is set to become Hanoi new iconic landmark. Maximizing the engaging views and integrating usable outside spaces, Benoy has designed a destination on the West Lake that is set to become an icon for Hanoi for years to come.

This project is a Masterplan for the historical area in Chongqing. the location of site is right in front of government building and it has a heritage building, Daili mansion. from the topography of Chongqing, this site has lots of levels different and it has a cliff. the main street, Zhongshansilu, is a famous destination for Chinese and meaningful for Chongqing people. The design challenge was how to connect circulation regarding height difference, and how to invite new buildings into this historical area.

Site Photo

The design language is from the research of site, which is 'Arch', it creat continuous feeling. and we create a big loof to connect the overall site. this path is not only a walkway also creates an exhibition zone and provides dynamic experiences.

Across all cultures, the first forms of writing date back to the dawn of civilization, when humans sought shelter in caves. It is on the walls and ceilings of these intimate, protected spaces that they formed the first communities and felt the need to share and record their experiences.

Caves are not just the conceptual inspiration of the building, but for the design process itself. While in nature, caves are created by the erosion of rock by the flow of water and wind, the flow of people through the park and into the exhibition spaces carves out cavities from a perfectly rectangular mass. The result of this process is a sequence of carefully crafted moments that allow the park to flow through the building in a seamless relationship.

As one steps under the soffit, a skylight lets in a beam of light to create a moment of reflection and inspiration. The soffit’s monolithic cuts are further carved with words in languages from around the world. This simple articulation breaks down the massing to a human scale and signals an entry into a building intimately designed with writing in mind.

WATER Water molecule forms a hexagon when it freezes. This distinct molecular structure transitions into design of the facade, creating an array of BAY WINDOWS. MAST View of water is extremely rare luxury in Seoul therefore the key corner that offers the view to the river has been opened up with a thin mast cut that seemingly continues into infinity.

The master plan gives the most prominence to the communal/public buildings, which are expressed as individual objects/icons in the landscape. The ‘private’ areas are more recessive, and sunk into the landscape and covered in gardens. All the accommodation and social spaces are located to the south of the creek. The steeper, wooded area on the north side of the creek is exclusively for the meditation halls, the gateless gate and the kuti. The creek is therefore used as a transitional element between social engagement and meditation, i.e., the transition from human communication to communication with Buddha.

숙박시설

A broad bridge spans the creek, and accommodates the library, the most meditative space of the social areas. The three mediation halls ascend the hillside in a hierarchy, with the most advanced space (C3) towards the top of the hill. 대중실 혜선문 (慧禪門)

It isn’t a surprising fact that about 50% of the world’s population live in Urban Areas. Not only Seoul, but other cities also face the emerging social issues of fine dust particles and air pollution accumulating in these highly populated areas. There has always been an arising concern in regards to the quality of life for modern society and for those who inhabit the dense forests made up of city buildings. What Percentage of the world's population live in Urban areas?

Buildings are what make up the majority of the city centers. In an effort to find a solution for this ongoing problem, the “Eco-City Garden” was an effective solution resolved through architecture with an attempt to bring nature into the dense city.

CONCEPT _ PUZZLE

HIGH DENSITY BUILDING BLOCKS

INTEGRATE GREENERY TO BUILDINGS

Horizontal Expansion

The concept of vertical forests were introduced and applied to residential housing. The buildings with the vertical gardens call for the notion of a Green City landmark, whilst performing as an Eco-Friendly Welfare Residence, presenting itself as a new paradigm for sustainable residential housing.

Expand view and green. The highest residential area in Seoul, we can view the whole city from here. This area has to be redevelopment. In Korea, when we develop hills to building area, we cut hill land and make flatland. but it’s obviously destruction of nature. Every land has its own voice. I suggest the way of development with this idea.

Side View of Each Housing

The forward-biased cores make the corridor long to the each residential. If it has full of residential then living environment will become poor. Therefore, to allow natural light and ventilation, I take off mass behind the core. And make tow corridors between that.

Unit Plans

Each house has a terrace. And between the corridors, decks and green spaces are created to create open corridors not closed one. It all to provide a residential environment with nature.

The Essence of Structure is ‘3 Points’ 3 points are minimum elements for making a stable structure. A regular tetrahedron is the geometry of 3 points. and I make new logic for a new structure based on it.

The Basic idea is ‘Proliferation’ with Rhino grasshopper, first, make tetrahedron and use ‘count’ for dividing line and surface of it. then connect all points by ‘line’ and sort outline by logic which is about distance and duplication. these lines become a branch of the structure. Next step is to find all of the points of intersection and delete useless or excessive branch for minimalizing of the structure. Now it’s a basic structure. And I make ‘Transformation’ with this basic one. first, change each count. second, make an irregular tetrahedron. The last step is ‘Put in Program’ and make this unique structure to be an architecture. With this logic, you can make an infinite variety of structures.

For this project, I put in ‘Cultural Complex’ included indoor climbing, shop, cafe, playground for children, public space. Tilted wall and variety of levels make unique space. And Open first floor for access easily, envelop facade according to each program.
