Crime and Punishment Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The task was to experiment with dramatic space, atmosphere and light of stairs leading to flat of moneylender (costume design), who is killed by Raskolnikov. Designs were then transformed into stage design structures.

JIŘÍ KARÁSEK • PORTFOLIO • 7

Flea in Her Ear Georges Feydeau

Costume designs were connected with wallpaper patterns used on stage design structures. This allowed characters to hide during performance and was the fundamental idea for directing this play. The stage design was after developing into complete technical solution. JIŘÍ KARÁSEK • PORTFOLIO • 8

Prometheus Bound Publius Ovidius Naso

Basic designs and dramaturgical solution of classic Greek myth. The idea is to use a piece of wood, in what Prometheus gave fire‌ to humans, as an artefact and symbol on the stage.

PQ Opening

Proposal of opening performance for Prague Quadrennial 2011. Fundamental idea was to develop the story of Prague Astronomical clock into opening show. I used characters who are actually present on historical clock, redesigned their costumes and developed dramaturgy of the show. The action would take place on multiple levels. (For costume designs see next page.) JIŘÍ KARÁSEK • PORTFOLIO • 11

Orlando Furioso Ludovico Ariosto

The project was approached as stage design for non theatrical spaces. A performance that can be performed anywhere. I chose a simple dramaturgy that this text offers and focused on a big visual effect. During the performance forklifts and building machines were transformed into mythological beasts. JIŘÍ KARÁSEK • PORTFOLIO • 16

Three Sisters Anton Chekhov

Performance at theatre Disk. The dramaturgy of the play was balancing in between rehearsal and actual performance. Actors were stepping out of their roles in the space with double identity either as a performance stage or as a rehearsal space. Director: Martin Huba Stage Design: Jiří Karásek Costume Design: Tereza Kopecká

The Witch of Edmonton

William Rowley, Thomas Dekker and John Ford Performance at theatre Disk, Stage in this play was designed very minimal and functional in the way of the Elizabethan theatre. The costumes were created by upcycling and experimenting with everyday objects. For example Renaissance collars were created with pillows and medical equipment.

Citizen Kane Orson Welles

Adaptation of the famous film by Orson Welles into theatre. I focused on searching for differences between theatre and cinema language. After the breakdown of the film principles I visualized the story with pure theatre language, but still with empathy on the technical solution.

Day of Happines

A movie set in the 60s-90s Czechoslovakia needed extended research on the industrial design and architecture of this era. The main character was the son of a member of the government, therefore sets were very atypical for this period. Parts were designed as studio sets and were connected to real locations.

Shadow

Hans Christian Andersen The Fairy tale is set in southern lands. I encountered two different places during research, Kowloon and Shibam, both built in totally different eras in two different parts of the world, but still with very similar forms. I decided to combine those two forms and simply and smoothly created a sci-fi looking architecture where I set the story.

JIŘÍ KARÁSEK • PORTFOLIO • 27

Shadow - models

I created a detailed model of the street, that was shot on green screen and postproduced after. Using VFX technics I composed short matte painting shot of how I imagined this fairy tale land environment.
