ith each new event, the 2019/2020 season gets stronger. The 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio is the latest example of how strong the movement is all over the world. For three days on November 1-3, the Arena Carioca 1 welcomed the Jiu-Jitsu community in the region for a celebration of the sport. The fans on the stands cheered for their favorite athletes as they battled for the ultimate glory. The fifth edition of the ADGS Rio proved once again that the season is a huge success. The ADGS Rio was also the setting for a new groundbreaking event. The Abu Dhabi Queen of Mats gathered six of the best lightweight competitors in the world. This new series is another step in the direction of making Jiu-Jitsu as inclusive as possible. New editions of the ADQOM are already scheduled for upcoming ADGS events in the future, as well as ADKOM events. The success in each stop of the AJP Tour is the result of the dedication of devoted professionals on and off the mats, as well as behind the scenes. The AJP team works relentlessly to make improvements in each of the stops the tour makes, big or small. We make the commitment to you that this work will continue and offer better events to all our participants. We once again would like to express our gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces, for his continuous support of Jiu-Jitsu. His Highness has always been a source of inspiration for us and we are fortunate to have him on our side.

For three days, beautiful Rio de Janeiro was the epicenter of the Jiu-Jitsu universe as the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam reached the city. Our news team landed in Brazil with the important mission of reporting on every single event of that epic weekend. Our reporters roamed the city to find the stars of the show in their final days of training before the competition. We visited João Gabriel Rocha, Gabrieli Pessanha, Amal Amjahid, among others. Carioca or foreigners, all competitors were welcomed into the mats to finish their training camps and be ready for action at the Arena Carioca 1. The work continued during the weigh ins on October 31st, as thousands of athletes stepped on the scales to check if they were on point for their weight classes. Once again, our team was there to register the effort and sacrifice of each athlete as they dreamed of a successful tournament. The following three days were of insane matches with the best in the world showcasing their talents on the mats. Day 1, on November 1, featured the groundbreaking Abu Dhabi Queen of Mats. For the first time ever, six of the best lightweight competitors gathered to decide which one would be crowned the queen. Luiza Monteiro had a performance for the history books and snatched the title. You’ll find every detail of that event on our pages. The weekend in Rio also was the stage for the crowning of the three new Abu Dhabi King of Mats. Leonardo Saggioro, Isaque Bahiense and Jackson Sousa came out of three battles as the reigning champions. Our reporters and photographers were there to register every second of the three matches. As the 2019/2020 reaches its final stretch, we get ready to pack our bags to cover the Abi Dhabi Grand Slam Abu Dhabi, January 16-18, once again in the state of the art Mubadala Arena. Get ready for another complete coverage on our social media channel. We hope you’ll enjoy another edition of Jiu-Jitsu World Magazine. In every single issue we work hard to bring you the best content possible. We hope to see you again here on our next issue. Have a great read and stay on the mats.

Jackson enjoyed every minute of his return to his family’s home in Rio

Prefer to have goals instead of dreams. We can dream about anything, but goals are something solid that we can achieve

Return to Glory

Jackson Sousa

Jackson Sousa tells his story of struggles and victories after beating the odds to overcome a much heavier João Gabriel Rocha and claim the heavyweight Abu Dhabi King of Mats crown

Words: Ivan Trindade | Images: Ane Nunes

Jiu-Jitsu World: You are a well known black belt with victorious campaign both as a competitor and professor. Tell us how Jiu-Jitsu became part of your life? Jackson Sousa: I grew up in the Cantagalo community in Rio, where I had to deal with drug trafficking, police, criminals and sometimes even war between different gangs. I believe most kids in the community dream about becoming football players to help their families. I was no exception, but Jiu-Jitsu became my tool for a better future. A friend of mine called Alexandre “Buda” led me to the social project “Amigos do Morro”, led by world champions Ricardinho Vieira e and Fernando Tererê. It was there that I learned how to become a competitor and a professor. Without that place I wouldn’t be living in London today, leading a successful team. Who were or are the most important people in your Jiu-Jitsu journey and what were the most important lessons you learned from them? There are a lot of people who had been important in my life. First of all, my mother Simone Sousa, who was the base of everything. She has been by my side since the beginning of my career. My family is always by my side. Also, my masters Leozinho Vieira and Ricardinho Vieira, two people that changed

Number 22 - 2020

my life with Jiu-Jitsu, teaching me to be an athlete. I have a lot of gratitude for the two. I also want to mention my physical trainer Henri Lima, from Studio Fun Training. He has become a father that I never had. He has helped with my conditioning, but also with my mental state, giving me strength to face different challenges. At last, my “godfather” and mentor Alan “Finfou “ Nascimento, who brought me back to Jiu-Jitsu when I stepped away for a while in 2004. To this day he helps me with different aspects of my career. What advices could you give to a young competitor that dreams with having the same success in Jiu-Jitsu as you are having? My advices are simple and positive. First, always have the will power to reach your goals, on or off the mats. Be patient when things are not happening right away. Second, persevere in your goals and never give up. Third, prefer to have goals instead of dreams. We can dream with anything, but goals are something solid that we can achieve. At the recent Abu Dhabi King of Mats, you caught the crowd by surprise with your victory over João Gabriel Rocha. What was your game plan to overcome the big weight difference? In fact, I have fought João many times before. I think the overall score is now 3x2 in his favor. João is an outstanding athlete and

21

Jackson bet on his efficient standing game to put the breaks on João Gabriel Rocha

Once on the ground, Jackson put pressure to pass Rocha’s guard

Sousa was able to neutralize Rocha’s weight advantage

I have only great things to say about him. The match against João at the ADKOM was all about strategy. I wanted to keep the match standing as long as possible to avoid what happened in Moscow, when we fought and he was able to get me in a foot lock. In Rio, with the new rules that turned penalties and advantages into points, I was able to get a guard pass after he pulled guard to go ahead two points. After the match went back standing, I was able to maintain the lead to the end. You live in England and hardly competes in Brazil. How was your stay in Rio for the ADKOM in November? What was the feeling of competing in your hometown once again? There’s a saying in Brazil that goes like this: “A good son always come back home.” The last time I had competed in Brazil before the ADKOM in November was in 2012. I was still a brown belt. The feeling of competing in Brazil is unforgettable. A little

22

film of my career flashed before my eyes, with wins and defeats. I remembered of all the idols that I had watched competing in Rio when I was only a child. The time I spent in Rio in November was divided between family, friends and training. It was a magical time all around. The AJP is known for paying monetary prizes to its athletes based on performance and results. How important it is for you to have your efforts and accomplishments rewarded? Being professional is vital for our sport. I believe that the AJP has the same vision as most athletes and that’s why they work to give value to performances and results in its tournaments. That’s what is making our sport better. Congratulations to the AJP Tour and to my friend Rodrigo Valério for the outstanding work. Also, congrats to all the media involved in our sport, giving visibility to our fans.

AJP Athlete’s Ranking

How to build your route to the top Understanding the AJP athletes ranking Words: Rodrigo ValĂŠrio, | Image: Ane Nunes

28

Jiu-Jitsu World

The New AJP World Ranking Format Based on rules of the Olympic Charter, the Qualification System aims to ensure that the principles of universality, performance, country, representation and gender equity, remain the focus for the AJP participation. In addition, a number of other technical principles and rules have been established to provide a basis for the development of the AJP Qualification System. The ranking is the most fair way of awarding the effort and the talent of each athlete that signs up to one of the AJP tournaments throughout the year. It is also a great incentive for more and more athletes to take part in as many events as they can. The next pages will explain how the ranking works and the new changes. Have a good read, put on your gi and go out there to add points right away.

How does the ranking work and what are the main changes?

The raking period will be in general for 24 months. The Seven (7) best results during next season (12 months’ period) will count + one extra (8th) result from the Continental Pro + the result of Abu Dhabi World Professional Championship, starting from May 1st, 2019. The points for each individual tournament will expire as follows: • From May 1, 2019 to April 30th, 2020 the points will count 100%. • After May 1, 2020 the points will be reduced to 50%. • After May 1, 2021 the points will be reduced to 0 and not count anymore. The dividing line is the first week of May 2020. Example: If tournament is held in first week of May 2019, the points are reduced to half on the first week on May 2020 and expired in the first week of May 2021.

How to add points in the ranking?

You add points in the ranking by at least participating in one of the events of the AJP calendar (the current calendar started on May 1, 2019 and ends on April 30, 2020). There are five kinds of events in terms of how many points you’ll get: ADWPJJC; Abu Dhabi Grand Slam; Continental Pro; National Pro; International Pro;

Here are the number of points athletes will earn on each event depending on their performance.

Number 22 - 2020

29

How many rankings are there?

The AJP has divided the ranking in several categories. You can say that the two most important are male adult black belt and female adult brown/black belt. Each belt has its own ranking starting with white belts. You also have a ranking in the male master division, an academy ranking, continental and country rankings. There are also No-Gi rankings. Here are a few examples of how to count an athlete’s points.

For what else is the ranking used for by the AJP? The Federation will use the ranking to decide your position on the bracket of the ADWPJJC. It will also use the ranking to invite athletes to compete in the ADWPJJC. In addition the ranking will be used to select fighters for the new Abu Dhabi King of Mats through Continental Ranking and Grand Slam Placements. What else do you need to know about the ranking? Yes. There are a few details you need to know about the ranking. If you are alone in a division, you won’t earn points in the ranking. If you change belts during the season, you lose the points from the previous belt. The same happens if you change age divisions during the calendar. Due to the academies ranking, the AJP will not change an athlete’s team during the same season. Another features to be implemented are that athletes will get points for not only placements, but also for each matches won. For example, athletes can get a certain point for a gold medal, but will also earn extra points for each win. So if athletes win a really large bracket that could lead award more points than smaller brackets. On top on that athletes will be awarded even extra points for different type of wins, for example winning by advantage or by submissions.

30

Are there any more novelties in the ranking for the 20192020 season? In case of equality of total RANK points, the higher ranking will be decided by:

1. The highest sum of the current points from World Pro. 2. The highest sum of the current points from all Grand Slams. 3. The highest sum of the current points from all Continental Pro, followed by National Pro, International Pro and Regional Championships. 4. The highest current points from one single event, then, if needed, the second highest, and so on. 5. If the competitors are still equal the decision will be taken by the number of matches done by the fighter through the season, followed by the fastest submission(s) or who made more points during the matches in case of World Pro Qualification. ABU DHABI KING OF MATS

The New Court in Town Three epic super matches define the new rulers of the Abu Dhabi King of Mats in afternoon of thrills in Rio de Janeiro Words: Ivan Trindade | Images: Ane Nunes, Ivan Trindade

The afternoon of November 2nd was a historic one for the Abu Dhabi King of Mats series. After almost two years since the first edition of the ADKOM, on April 2018, the crowns were at stake once again. In all three weight classes, new kings were crowned after intense matches. A new rule set was stablished where

advantages and penalties became points. With that, the scoreboards saw intense movement and lead were pulverized in minutes. In the next pages, you’ll relive how Leonardo Saggioro, Isaque Bahiense and Jackson Sousa secured their crowns and the right to be called Abu Dhabi King of Mats.

Leonardo Saggioro vs. Isaac Doederlein

American Isaac Doederlein hit the mat running and managed a sweep and a near guard pass to build a 4-0 lead early in the match. Brazil’s Leo Saggioro fought back and went on beast mode to sweep and then nearly pass the guard and nearly take Doederlein’s back, almost getting the finish with a choke. With all that effort, Saggioro was able to turn the scoreboard around and build a 7-5 lead that granted him the right to keep the title as lightweight ADKOM champion. “I know I can go head to head against anyone. It depends solely on me. I am happy that I was able to turn the score around,” said Saggioro after the match.

Jackson Sousa vs. João Gabriel Rocha / HEAVYWEIGHT No Fear of the Big Man

Strategy was the name of the game for Jackson Sousa against a much heavier João Gabriel Rocha. The Checkmat black belt worked hard to keep his opponent standing in the beginning of the match. After a few minutes, Jackson took the match to the ground and was successful in his attempt to score against João. A near guard pass and a near back take put Jackson ahead by two points. He was able to sustain that lead up to the end with an overall 8-6 final score. “The strategy worked perfectly. I knew I had to be smart about the weight difference. It’s awesome to win this title here in Rio, so close to my family!” said Jackson after the match.
