W

ith the unlimited support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Jiu-Jitsu continues to enjoy unprecedented growth in the country. The 2015/2016 season provided no shortage of impressive feats, established by the Emirati stars at the international arena, and in terms of competitions, the launch of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam and the introduction of a World Ranking system. The Grand Slam World Tour kicked off in Los Angeles followed by Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and London. It culminated with the eighth staging of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Championship. Abu Dhabi has been included as the fifth venue for the second season of the Grand Slam. The 2016/2017 season kicked off September 3-4 in Los Angeles, followed by Tokyo on October 23, Rio de Janeiro on November 12-13, Abu Dhabi on January 13-14 and London on March 18. The Grand Slam World Tour will once again reached its climax with the ninth staging of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Championship. Jiu-Jitsu has enjoyed remarkable progress in a short period of time. It all begun with a successful debut at the Fourth Asian Beach Games in Phuket, in 2014. Then, in 2016 it was time for the Fifth Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam. Recently, it had a very successful showing at the Fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, on September 2017. The next stop will be at the 2018 Asian Games, in Jakarta. Jiu-Jitsu has also been included at the inaugural World Beach Games in San Diego, in 2019. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) must surely be given credit for Jiu-Jitsu’s incredible growth and for raising the profile of the sport both locally and internationally. They have a well-structured development program from the grassroots with a busy domestic calendar that includes competitions scheduled throughout 10 months of the year. The UAEJJF have emphasized on youth development and the nurture of discipline, loyalty, bravery and teamwork through Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. In fact, the rise of Jiu-Jitsu has attracted enough followers for a new crop of ‘Emirati heroes’ to emerge amongst its practitioners, as made evident in the number of medals and international titles earned from numerous competitions.

INTERVIEW Ana Carol Vieira celebrates her title at the Grand Slam Rio in 2016

Talent that runs in the family

Ana Carolina Vieira is proudly following the steps of her brother Rodolfo and also building a very successful career on the mats

WORDS: IVAN TRINDADE | IMAGES: ANE NUNES

The female brown/black belt 70kg division has a undisputed queen. Ana Carolina Vieira rose to the top of her weight class in the 2016/2017 season with powerful performances in several events that led to a flawless campaign at the 9th Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, this past April, in Abu Dhabi. The title crowned Carol’s efforts to be the best in her division. Coming back from a bad injury that needed surgery to get Carol back on the mats, she gave all she had to achieve her goals. Just like her brother Rodolfo Vieira, Carol is working really

20

hard to write her name in Jiu-Jitsu history. In the next pages, she talks about her recent results, her brother’s influence and shares her plans for the future. JIU-JITSU WORLD: In 2017, you won your first title as a black belt in the ADWPJJC, at the 70kg division. A few months after the result, can you tell us how important that title is for your career? Ana Carolina Vieira: The title at the ADWPJJC gave me a lot

Jiu-Jitsu World

At the recent Grand Slam LA, Carol once again displayed her technique and power to claim the gold medal

more visibility within the Jiu-Jitsu community. I see it as one of the most prestigious competitions today. I really wanted to win it. On top of that, there’s the money prize that without a doubt adds even more motivation for competitors. This past season you finished 5th in the female black belt ranking. What are your plans to get to the top of the ranking in the present season and take home the US$ 10,000 prize? I really want to finish first in the ranking. It’s going to be hard as I missed the first Grand Slam of the season, in Tokyo.

Number 03 - 2017

Ana Carol and the thrill of becoming an ADWPJJC black belt champion

Nevertheless I am confident that I will have good results in the following months to finish as high in the ranking as I can. You brother Rodolfo Vieira is also a great Jiu-Jitsu champion and he has followed your career up close. What were the most valuable lessons he taught you throughout the years to be successful on the mats?

He’s on a whole other level! I am very grateful for his presence at the beginning of my career, when I needed support the most. With him I learned to never be satisfied, to always look for the finish

21

Pressure is Ana’s trademark on the mats

Brother Rodolfo is a constant presence alongside Carol whenever she competes

and also to pay attention to drills and specific training. The most important thing he taught me was that saying you want something is not enough. You have to work really hard to achieve it. After returning at the Grand Slam LA, your next stop on the tour will be in Rio. What’s the feeling of competing in your hometown in front of family and friends?

My God, I can’t wait for November to come. I love to compete in my hometown. It’s a whole different feeling with my families and friends watching and rooting for me. The pressure is greater, but I am confident I will have a good performance. You are very present in the UAEJJF season. What is for you the importance of having a circuit of tournaments that award athletes for their efforts and results with big money prizes? The money prizes are very important as the life of an athlete is a tough one. We are professionals who make a living out of our performances and results on competitions. It’s right about time for other events to take on the UAEJJF’s example and start to reward athletes for their effort. Your bother won it all as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor and transitioned to MMA. Is that something you consider for yourself? What are your plans for the future?

I have always loved MMA. It is something I want to do in the future, but first I will focus on winning the titles I want as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor. After that, I will start with some boxing and maybe in three years time join my brother for a new chapter in my career.

ATHLETE’S RANKING

The only way to

Abu Dhabi Understand the workings of the UAEJJF annual athletes ranking WORDS: IVAN TRINDADE| IMAGES: UAEJJF

28

Jiu-Jitsu World

The 2017/2018 season brings a few novelties regarding the annual athletes ranking. For the present season, the UAEJJF will award 200 travel packages for the top competitors in each continent. Therefore, more than ever the ranking is the pathway to the 2018 Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship as well as the big money prizes for the best athletes at the end of the season. The UAEJJF is also adding prizes for the best adult male black belts in each of the six continents, a way to make more and more athletes compete in regional events. Competitors have huge incentives to take part in as many events as they can. The next pages will explain how the ranking works. Have a good read, put on your gi and go out there to add points right away.

How to add points in the ranking?

You add points in the ranking by at least participating in one of the events of the UAEJJF calendar (the current calendar started on May 1, 2017 and ends on April 30, 2018). There are six kinds of events in terms of how many points you’ll get: 1 - ADWPJJC – 6 stars; 2 - Abu Dhabi Grand Slam – 5 stars; 3 - Continental Pro – 4 stars; 4 - National Pro – 3 stars; 5 - International Pro – 2 stars; 6 - Regional Tournament – 1 stars. Here are the number of points athletes will earn on each event depending on their performance.

Here are a few examples of how to count an athlete’s points.

How many rankings are there?

The UAEJJF has divided the ranking in the following categories: Adult Division

- Best International Male Black Belt of the year - Best Continental Male Black Belt of The year: Asia, Europe, South America, North America, Africa, Oceania - Best International Female Brown/Black belt of the Year - Best International Rookie of the year (Brown Belt) Master Division

- Best International Male Black belt of the Year (Master 1) Academies

- Best International Academy of the year

Number 03 - 2017

29

Who gets the travel packages to compete at the 2018 ADWPJJC? The Federation will award 200 travel packages for the top athletes of over 60 countries in each continent. Only two athletes per country inside each continent will get travel packages. The cut off date to add points for this season is March 12. Here are the packages to be awarded to each continent in each age/belt division. What are the prizes for ranking leaders? After all the effort, it is natural that ranking leaders at the end of the season receive proper rewards. The male adult black belt division alone will award US$70,000, while the female brown/black belt division will award US$18,000. That’s the same amount reserved for the male adult brown belt ranking leaders and the master 1 male black belt division. The tables here show the main prizes. Do only athletes in the UAEJJF ranking can compete in the 2018 ADWPJJC? No. The 2018 ADWPJJC is open to all athletes who are UAEJJF members. What else do I need to know about the UAEJJF ranking? If a fighter made the weight for their division and is alone in their bracket they will be moved to a heavier division or higher belt. Points will be credited when there’s a no-show after the bracket is published and an athlete have no matches. Divisions with two players will run normally and fighters won’t be moved to heavier/higher division. Whenever belt divisions are merged, the points will be credited according to the fighter current belt. Ranking points will not be transferred from one belt rank to the next one. Raking points will not be transferred from one age division to another. If a fighter changes nationality during a season or qualification period they will lose all points in the UAEJJF World Rank.

TRAVEL AND ROLL

LIVE THE

Carioca life A complete guide to Rio de Janeiro for the Jiu-Jitsu athlete coming to compete in the Grand Slam WORDS: IVAN TRINDADE | IMAGES: MORGUEFILE, ANE NUNES

BREAKING A SWEAT Don’t even think about signing up to a gym. Rio has all the outdoor workout options you could possibly hope to find in a big city. Whether you like running, hiking, swimming, riding or even mountain climbing, the wonderful city has it all. Here are three great options to get your blood flowing.

Pedra da Gávea Hike An absolute favorite among Jiu-Jitsu practitioners is Rio, the hike up the world famous Pedra da Gávea (Gavea’s Rock) offers it all. You will get up and close with nature, work real hard on your cardio, do incredible leg work, test your climbing skills and get your zen side fixed. The hike is not for everyone, but if you are in good shape (and most Jiu-Jitsu people is), you should have no problems getting to the top and experience the overwhelmingly beautiful views of the city from 842 meters high (2762ft). You can do it by yourself if you are an experience hiker/climber, otherwise pick one of the hike companies that offer the service. Have a great hike. 66

Jogging by the Ocean If your not a heights guy but still has some energy to burn, a run by Rio’s beautiful coastline is the ideal option for you. The best option is to run from Leme beach all the way to the end of Leblon beach and back. It’s a 8km (5 mile) run each way on a well maintained paved track you have to share with cyclists. Take a break at each end and enjoy some ice cold coconut water straight from the fruit (as a bonus you get to eat the coconut meat). Also, no one is stoping you from taking a dip into the mostly warm waters of the Atlantic ocean. Jiu-Jitsu World

Swin, Surf or Dive Rio is a city by the ocean, as you probably know. So, bring your bathing suit and jump in for a swin, a dive or even a surf session. By the way, the surfing culture and the Jiu-Jitsu culture are tightly connected since always. Some of the best and most legendary names in Jiu-Jitsu history are also skilled surfers. You don’t even need to bring your boards as Rio offers plenty of rental options for the lighter traveller.

GARDEN OF “DELÍCIAS” With summer temperatures in 10 out 12 months of the year, looking good is a must in Rio. Eating right is as vital as exercising. With plentiful options of tropical fruits, vegetables and seafood, eating healthy in Rio is easy. Here are three great options to get your grub on.

Vegan Vegan

(Rua Voluntários da Pátria, 402 - Loja B, Phone: +55 21 2286-7078)

Creative organic vegan dishes are on the menu at this spick and span little Botafogo eatery, which also offers home-made vegan ice cream and other treats. There are two set menus each day - one of which is always gluten-free - with some daily options varying according to which locallysourced vegetables are at their best that day. There are other staples, which crop up on a revolving weekly basis on the menu, with a firm favorite being a savory tofu roll with a chickpea - ‘pastry’. It’s a little off the tourist track in residential Botafogo, but just a short walk from the metro and well worth seeking out.

New Natural

(R. Barão da Torre, 171 - Box 8 – Ipanema, Phone: +55 21 2287-0301)

Located a few blocks from Ipanema beach and right next door to the strip of backpacker lodgings dubbed ‘Hostel Alley’, this health food store, buffet restaurant and snack bar offers a huge range of wholesome ingredients for self caterers as well as a range of eat-in dishes that are every bit as tasty as they are nutritious. While there is plenty of choice here for vegetarians, New Natural is not entirely meat-free, with low-fat chicken and fish putting in a few appearances on the menu. The buffet operates on a pay-by-weight system, and prices here, while on the high side, are reasonable for the neighborhood. There’s an air conditioned lounge upstairs and a couple of sidewalk tables and chairs, making New Natural a favorite spot among backpackers looking for a quick, healthy lunch.

Don’t forget to give the sunset a big round of applauses.
