mirabel We got into pairs and had to identify the interests of our classmates and design the logo which reflected on it. Elfe was from Austria, was interested in wood sculpting, and seemed gifted so I thought that it would be a good idea for her to design the logo of an antique European furniture company. The name of this virtual company is Mirabel. This is the name of a garden of a castle in Austria and it is defined as ‘the beautiful.’ In case of the logo, ‘m’ which stands for Mirabel and the shape of an antique table were integrated and designed so that it gives off the impression of a furniture company.

water wars posters I was asked to create an image that visually summarizes the word ‘Water Wars’. This time, we were tasked to ‘get our hands dirty’ without using the computer. By doing this task, I learned that even a minor, ordinary object could be used as an important element of the designing process.

subway/ wood type posters Wood type posters that portray features of subways in three different cities (New York, London, and Paris). The posters contain information about the typefaces used in each subway system, fares, and announcements that can be heard in the stations, as well as the various station names.

I love new york postcards I was given the task to design a series of three postcards highlighting what I found unique in New York City. I brought out a theme of Food, Architecture and Transportation and designed the word ‘New York’ based on the objects that we can ‘see’, ‘eat’ and ‘experience’ only in this city.

typographic self-portrait For this task, I was assigned to create a typographic self-portrait. I used color and type to introduce who I am and this was an important aspect of designing a self-protrait. The soft blue background represent the designs that I’ve created in the past up to now. Colorful types are the design attitudes that I’m trying to have from now on.

alphabet book “Look up, look down, look closely. Type is everywhere.” I was given the task to find letterforms around me and take pictures of them. I realized that if we give a small attention and observe our surrounding, we can easily associate the similarity of alphabet and daily objects. Based on the pictures that I’ve taken, I designed a catalogue for a fictional exhibition of letterforms that I discovered.

gates of eden I had to design the cover of ‘Gates of Eden,’ a book which consists of short novels. Gates of Eden includes dark stories which reflect on the 1970s in the United States. Objects which applied as important symbols for the characters and contents of the book were used to construct it.

A designer should use only these 5 typefaces. -Massimo Vignelli-

zine/ massimo vignelli During the beginning of the semester, we used the name ‘Massimo Vignelli’ and designed 100 layouts. The regulation that was fixed in designing the layout was to only use 5 kinds of typefaces. Additionally, the layouts chosen amongst the 100 quantities were tied and small zines which were the size of a palm were created. Only using the 5 kinds of typeface was the crucial point of this assignment. Therefore, five fingers set up the overall concept of zine and it started from there to take pictures of various movements in the hand described each of the typefaces.

harold and maude I designed a DVD packaging of a cult film during the 1970’s called ‘Harold and Maude’. ‘Harold and Maude’ is a film that speaks about a story where Harold, whose hobby is to put on a suicidal play, meets Maude, who holds cheerful, goofy, and bright energy, and gradually changes into an individual who can sincerely communicate with the world. In case of the booklet included in the DVD packaging, important lines and scenes from the film were included. Moreover, the booklet was designed in form of an accordion format and the gradual positive changes in the emotion of Harold after he met Maude was to be displayed through the changes in the color of the background from dark to brighter and more cheerful colors.
