Content Background Idea / Concept Exploration: process work Final Proposal Research Final Project
Background This semester, in Digital Media Environment Design class, we were given three different projects: signal processing and sound, 3-D printing, and movie making. We all individually had to pick one and think about the concept. Through the process, we must challenge our self with a strong idea that could be expressed in any way possible. In the end, we must clearly know what our individual concept is and review if the final project is presented as close as the first concept. All three different projects have their own challenges but it is an exciting project that could help us to bcome a better designer because the process we go through is well organized.
Idea / Concept I have decided to do one channel movie out of the three. In the beginning, I wanted to do space and motion graphics (still) duration for the movie part. So, I went around and found places that had movements that related to sports. I was interested in sports and body movements, also, photography using multiple imaging techniques and multiple exposures. I wanted to observe movement in different sports (swin, basketball, soccer, football, etc) and compare each patterns. Exploring various motions, observing their pattern, and seeing the in depth of the movements.
Concept One First, I took photographs of each sport’s significance and use multiple exposures to combine each movement as one. For example, in basketball, I would observe each detailed movements of dribble the ball and shooting the ball. And I went to Yeouido at night because in the middle of the Yeouido Park, there are basketball courts where a lot of guys go and play.
Yeouido Park
Concept Two Second, I wanted to observe the movement in various gymnastics or different dance (hip pop, ballet, jazz, etc) and compare each pattern. Exploring the motion and animation through multiple imaging techniques. I’m going to take photographs of each sport’s significance and use multiple exposures to combine each movement as one. For example, cartwheel, I would observe the arm and leg movements and the facial expression.

Concept Three Third, I wanted to observe movement of the golf swings using different clubs and compare each swing patterns. I’m going to take photographs of various swings and find significance in using different clubs and combine and use multiple exposures to combine each movement as one. For example, iron and wood, I would observe the change between the two (posture, arm, etc) if there is any. This would be a interesting test to do.

Concept Four Other ideas that I had was observing movement of the balloons and paint. Filling balloons with paint and observe where the paints splash when it’s popped. Through this experience I can see the in depth beauty of the paint movement when the balloon is popped. I’m going to take photographs of hand muscles and paints splashed that can’t be predicted. To seet he significance of popping a balloon using hand pressure that is filled with paints using multiple exposures to combine each movement as one. For example, this photo was created with my friend Jessica. We preform with various colors of paint and balloons.

Concept Five Last, influenced by the photographer, Étienne-Jules Marey. I would like to express in black and white for all of the images that is going to be taken. The theme for this would have to relate in Korean Culture (Movement of the Hanbok dress, traditional dance using fans, etc). I would like to observing the movement of the dress and the movement of the fans. I would have nothing for the background (plain and simple).

Concept that I had in mind For my video, I did not know what to do with my concept because I thought the idea was good and interesting but it did not have a spark that would lead to the final outcome of the project. After talking to Professor Hall, he had given a project, it was making at least five movies sequences per theme: night street silence, portrait, interior horror, crowd multiplier, and nature infrared. The challenge to this project is that in this movie there should not have movement or rotation in X and Y, it should only have forward motion in Z. Also, the walking speed needs to be consistent. I wanted to challenge myself to this project because I wanted to do something new that I have never done. For this project I needed to go out and try rather than playing with my computer.
Testing Concept First exploration, I went to DongDaeMun around 9-10p.m. on Friday. I used my LG phone (G3 Cat.6) to test out which angle, what time, where to, etc. The first theme that I tested was crowd multiplier. I thought it was the perfect place to express crowd multiplier. The problem was not people noticing the camera and trying to hide their face but it was the walking pace and the angle. I actually did not know what to take because I was scared that people might say something. Overall, this was a good test before using the Canon because this was my first take for this project. I needed to think about the angle to show people’s face.

Final Concept I used my LG phone (G3 Cat.6) to test out which angle, what time, where to, etc. The theme that I tested was crowd multiplier. I went to MyungDong around 5-6p.m. on Wednesday. I thought it was the perfect place to express crowd multiplier. The problem that I had was people noticing the camera and trying to hide their face. Also, there were too many people, so I could not walk straight. My goal was to show people’s natural facial expression and action.

Final Concept For the next theme to test, I went to GwangHwaMun around 4-5p.m. on Wednesday. I thought it was the new place to express nature infrared. Problems were too many cars on the road, so it did not come out the way that I wanted. And also,
the atmosphere was not easy to take because of the strikes that was going on, everyone was sensitive, so I played around with angle and walking pace. The vision that I had for this test was to show the beautiful mountain in the background with traditional GwangHwaMun in the center to give an emphasis to feel the greatness of the entrance. I wanted to present the historical places in Korea in a new way. Gwanghwamun, center street
Exploration: process work After doing some test with my LG phone, I started to borrow camera (7D Mark 2 Canon with 24-105mm Lens) every week because the camera that I have cannot record video. I picked places around Seoul that would perfectly match with my five movies sequences per theme. The places that I have decided to record were Gangnam, Daechidong, Cheongdamdong, Ahnguk, GwangHwaMun, Insadong, Incheon, and Jamshil. For the whole 24 hours, I went to the places that I pick and record my movie. I wanted to see if there was a different feel to the movie in different time and also the lighting (morning and night). This was very challenging because I had to record in the dark places by myself and I had to be awake for 24 hours, it was a tiring process.

Final Proposoal Through various test of the video, I have decided on what my final proposal is going to be. I am still thinking of using blank and white because I want relate each movie sequence same. But if I do use color for the video I need to control the lighting and the angle. I failed to test out infrared effect and twixtor effect. But, I am going to use twixtor to give an emphasis to the video. In the end, I would like to present this with a unique feeling of flatness that people could actually feel like they are in the video.
Research For the five sequences, I have finally picked the right place to retake and not revise as much as I can for this video: night street silence in Insadong, portrait in Gongduk, interior horror in Daegu, crowd multiplier in Myungdong, and nature infrared in Jamshil. I would want to present to people a different view of Korea. I wanted to go in depth and find places that are new and express how I felt in each places.

Final Project My final video concept is about healing not physically but mentally. I wanted to create a video where people could feel calm and comfortable by making them actually feel like they are in the video. The challenge to this project was trying to connect different scenes together by matching the nature to nature from the videos. I really want to retake my video after thinking more detailed work into different place that could represent nature and also stabling the camera to smoothly connect the videos together. Also, using binaural beat for music helps more to concentrate on the video.
Final URL & Programs Throughout this project I have just Tumblr for every week process. Vimeo helped to upload videos and link it to the blog. And last but not least, issuu to present finalized project and overall process. My goal was to use as less program to edit my video and experimenting various things with the camera and going to places that are new. But I used after effects to connect all my videos in one. And then, putting the video into premiere pro and resaving it to upload it on vimeo and blog.
