cloud nine selected for CASA’s 2023 student showcase winter 2023 library in Toronto, Ontario ARCH 193 Design Studio supervised by Isabel Ochoa + Rick Andrighetti rhino // enscape // illustrator // photoshop Cloud Nine, a public library, emphasizes the idea of an intergenerational community through a shared space for collective growth. Its unique form establishes the overlapping of both views and spaces that foster a pursuit for a stronger future together as a collective. The integrated café and child daycare facility provide convenience and comfort in this cloud of knowledge, with its curving book stacks climbing and tapering to invent framed views of the surrounding space. Skylights and domed drop ceilings allude to an uplifting pull towards the sky, encouraging the fulfillment of one’s dreams.

The library separates its programming into public and private floors, providing two lobbies for their respective uses. The lower floor is solely dedicated to the childcare facility, with a private entrance towards the outdoor play area. The main floor becomes increasingly public as one moves towards the other entrance, located on the opposite end of the building. The main floor utilizes book stacks as semi-transparent partitions, providing a sense of shared space amongst the community as one interacts with it, revitalizing the idea of the commons. Each book stack is unique; using nooks and crannies to create secondary spaces with embedded seating and using tapering forms to create views.

wave winter 2023 pedestrian bridge in Kitchener, Ontario ARCH 193 Design Studio supervised by Isabel Ochoa + Rick Andrighetti rhino // enscape // illustrator // photoshop Wave takes the form of its namesake in multiple different ways: the circulation follows a sinusoidal wave; the elevations mimic the movement of the sea, as it gently rocks up and down; and the unique shading devices of the bridge use these waves as visual inspiration to create loose, organic curves. This wheelchair-accessible bridge provides resting spaces protected by the sun in both east and west directions, with dipped look-out points opposite to them. Potlights and LED strip lighting illuminate the pedestrian bridge at night, providing safe access across the park as a new wayfinding landmark.

hestian oasis winter 2023 residential house in Tampere, Finland ARCH 126 Environmental Design supervised by Anna Beznogova in collaboration with Jessica Jia rhino // illustrator // photoshop Hestian Oasis provides a sustainable forest escape from the loud, urban world for a pair of sculpture and ceramic artists. Hestian Oasis maintains net-zero energy through the use of both a wind turbine and photo-voltaic panels, and maintains a net-zero water system with local groundwater sources and the filtration of rain and gray water. It is passively heated through the combined recycled heat of an anagama kiln, sauna, and pellet stove and retains heat through the curving cave-like walls and the thermal masses of the residence.

luminara house winner for ArchiDots’ 2023 Freshman Showcase shortlisted for Buildner’s Yoga House in the Bog spring 2023 residential house in Baltic Sea Coast, Latvia in collaboration with Renelle Handa + Jessica Jia rhino // illustrator // photoshop Luminara House is an idyllic retreat nestled within the lush forests of Latvia, immersing its inhabitants in the Baltic landscape through its tree-house-like design that mimics the surrounding vegetation. The arch is a recurring motif that frames these views, both externally through delicate metal cladding, and internally, where the wooden, central arched walls form an inviting atrium space that can be viewed from all levels. Extending to the greenhouse, inhabitants enjoy year-round access to native flora, while floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views of lush landscapes - both bringing nature inwards.

The atrium allows natural light to cascade through the skylight, bathing each floor in a warm glow. As you move through the house, a sense of community unfolds, with intersecting glimpses of shared spaces and personal retreats harmoniously coexisting. Wood arches that echo the swooping and curving lines of 19th century Art Nouveau buildings in Riga frame the view of the floors below, creating a dynamic atmosphere stimulating practice. Yanghwa Hangang River Park summer 2023 landscaping project in Seoul, South Korea Design Discovery Virtual supervised by Hanneke Van Deursen rhino // illustrator // photoshop Yanghwa Hangang River Park, located in Seoul, South Korea, faces yearly flooding due to heavy seasonal rainfall and a myriad of climate related issues. 1.5 to 1.3 billion EUR is projected to be spent annually in repairing damages from riverline flooding in South Korea, with estimates of 0.9 to 4.5 billion EUR in costs by the end of the century. Specific design interventions using bioretention techniques are proposed to better divert flooding away from busier infrastructure, effectively using the park as a barrier against the urban setting of Seoul.
48
49
Landscapes are raised and reinforced to create levees, which not only protect the streets of Seoul from flooding, but also allow for public occupancy during these times. The primary and secondary levees restrict water to a given area, with bioretention techniques applied using rain gardens of local, water-retaining plants. Large rooted vegetation protect these levees from wearing out due to erosion. The leavening of the nearby highway, the construction of street embankments, and improvements to the municipal sewage system are further methods that would protect the city from flash floods.
