In terms of natural beauty, there has probably never been an Olympic host city to equal Rio de Janeiro. Indeed, when the 2016 Summer Olympics get going Friday, Aug. 5, on NBC, NBC Sports Network, Golf Channel, CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network and NBCOlympics.com with 17 days of state-of-the-art competition, viewers will not only be treated to the heroics of Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Kerri Walsh-Jennings and others, they’ll also get an up-close-and-personal look at perhaps the world’s most scenic major city. Situated on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, Rio lies on the western shore of Guanabara Bay, rimmed by the Serra do Mar mountains and the Brazilian Highlands. Probably the most famous of these is Corcovado, a 2,329-foot granite peak on which the Christo Redentor (aka Christ the Redeemer) statue overlooks the harbor, arms outstretched. Constructed between 1922 and 1931 and standing 98-feet tall on the summit, it is easily the city’s most definitive feature. Other sights include the monolithic Sugarloaf, a 1,299-foot sheer granite mountain at the mouth of the bay; the 2,700-foot Pedra da Gavea, a magnet for hikers and adventurers; and the iconic beaches of Ipanema, Copacabana and Abrico, where volleyball and football are the sports of choice, beer is openly sold and consumed and clothing is optional. Yep, you’re not in Kansas anymore. Of course, the city’s problems are well-documented: high crime and murder rates, poverty, polluted waterways, a foundering economy, a government in the process of impeaching its president and the ever-present threat of terrorism. And then, of course, there is the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which has already scared away a number of athletes, Irish golfer Rory McIlroy among them, and more may yet drop out. The timing for the city to host a major world event seemingly couldn’t be worse. But with a security detail of about 85,000, more than twice that of London in 2012, and the fact that Rio hosted the 2014 World Cup with no major issues, confidence is high that these Games will go off without a hitch. If everything goes according to plan, this could easily be among the most memorable, if not the most photogenic, of Summer Games.

ARCHERY

BADMINTON

Arrows FLY on the archery course As much as technology has crept into the equipment used in Olympic archery, it still remains as simple as using a stick and a string, and requires superior hand-eye coordination. Men and women competitors shoot recurve bows in both individual and team formats at a distance of 70 meters (approximately 230 feet). Since archery returned to Olympic competition in 1972 (Munich), medals have been won by numerous countries, but South Korea has been the most consistent in recent history, including taking three of four gold medals in London in 2012. U.S. hopefuls include Mackenzie Brown of Flint, Texas. 8/5 Q; 8/6-7 M; 8/8-10 Q; 8/11-12 M

Badminton: advantage China Badminton falls into three categories: men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. In men’s singles, look for Lin Dan of China, the reigning gold medalist, to be in the mix against players such as Lee Chong Wei, the defending silver medalist from Malaysia, and bronze medalist Chen Long of China. On the women’s side, China’s Li Xuerui is favored to defend her gold medal from fellow countrywoman Wang Yihan and Saina Nehwal of India. Men’s doubles should see the Chinese tandem of Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan and the South Korean duo of Lee Yong-Dae and Yoo Yeon-Seong on the podium, while Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei of China are odds-on favorites to repeat as gold medalists in the women’s event. In mixed doubles, China’s Zhang and Zhao are the pick. 8/11-15 Q; 8/16-20 M

-Basketball: America’s golden game

BASKETBALL Carmelo Anthony

Traditionally one of America’s best events at the Summer Games, both men’s and women’s basketball are played throughout the two weeks of the Olympics. Each tournament features 12 teams, divided into two pools of six, with 12 players on each roster. In a slight change to NBA rules, games have four 10-minute quarters. If there’s a tie at the end of regulation, a five-minute overtime period is played with more overtimes taking place until a winner is determined. As the U.S. teams look to continue their gold-medal streaks – the men have finished first in the last two Summer Olympics and the women are going for a sixthstraight gold – they have two of the best coaches in the sport leading them. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski leads the men for the third time while University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma is at the helm of the women’s squad again after earning gold in 2012 (and in 2000 as an assistant coach). With names like Curry, Westbrook and Harden off the team, it’ll be harder for Team USA to snag gold against the likes of perennial contender Spain on the men’s side. Australia should challenge Team USA for gold in the women’s tourney. 8/6-19 Q; 8/20-21 M

BOXING

Pros, amateurs box in the shadow of Ali Claressa Shields

Two recent developments are drawing an enormous amount of attention to the 2016 Olympic boxing tournament, and with good reason. The first is the fact that this will no longer be an amateur event as professional boxers are being welcomed to the competition. And, the recent passing of Muhammad Ali has sparked a renewed interest not only in boxing, but in the summer games themselves. Ali’s (then Cassius Clay) 1960 gold medal launched his career but his lighting of the Olympic flame in Atlanta in 1996 is an equal part of Olympic history. Back in the ring, 2012 U.S. gold medalist Claressa Shields returns as a middleweight. 8/6-13 Q; 8/14-21 M

CANOE/KAYAK

Canoe/kayak: paddling along Canoeing is divided into two disciplines – slalom and sprint – with the former taking place on a whitewater obstacle course negotiated by single competitors or teams of two, and the latter being contested on a flat-water course in distances of 200, 500 or 1,000 meters in teams of one, two or four. The competition is divided into two classes: canoe, in which competitors kneel and use a single-bladed paddle to move themselves along; and kayak, where competitors are seated in the boat and can use both ends of a paddle. Sixteen gold medals are awarded in the two classes. Countries that figure to dominate the podium in Rio include Australia, Germany, Russia, China and Great Britain. 8/7-8 Q; 8/9-11 M; 8/15 Q; 8/16 M; 8/17 Q; 8/18 M; 8/19 Q; 8/20 M

CYCLING SPEED, TACTICS … AND SOMETIMES NO BRAKES!

DIVING DIVING: BOUDIA CARRIES AMERICAN HOPES

Cycling consists of track, road, BMX and mountain bike disciplines. All told, 18 gold medals are handed out, divided evenly between men and women. Two-time London silver medalist Sarah Hammer leads a young U.S. women’s track team, while a top Great Britain squad includes defending Olympic champions Laura Trott and Bradley Wiggins. Road contenders include 2012 bronze winners Chris Froome (U.K.) and Alexander Kristoff (Norway) and gold medalist Marianne Vos (Netherlands). In BMX watch for defending champs Maris Strombergs (Latvia) and Mariana Pajon (Colombia), and mountain biking features the anticipated returns of 2012 winner Jaroslav Kulhavy (Czech Republic) and bronze medalist Georgia Gould (U.S.). 8/6-7 M; 8/10-16 M; 8/17 Q; 8/19-21 M

Diving competitions are held at two heights, a 3-meter springboard and a 10-meter platform, with athletes competing individually and in pairs (aka synchronized). A total of eight gold medals are awarded to male and female divers. Once again, China figures to be a major force here, with serious gold medal contenders in the women’s springboard (He Zi) and men’s and women’s platform (Qiu Bo, Chen Ruolin). In synchronized events, Ilya Zakharov/Evgeny Kuznetsov of Russia figure to vie for gold with Great Britain’s Jack Laugher/Chris Mears in the springboard, while Team USA’s David Boudia/ Steele Johnson should bag hardware in the platform. 8/7-10 M; 8/12-13 Q; 8/14 M; 8/15 Q; 8/16 M; 8/17 Q; 8/18 M; 8/19 Q; 8/20 M

EQUESTRIAN EQUESTRIANS DON’T JUST HORSE AROUND The only Olympic sport in which an animal is involved are the equestrian ones, which include dressage, jumping and eventing in both individual and team formats. This is also the only sport where men and women compete against each other. Horsemanship is the name of the game as the rider’s task is to bring out the ultimate graciousness and athleticism of the animal they command. In some cases retired (off-the-track) thoroughbreds find their way into the competition. PanAmerican Games gold medalist Boyd Martin and Master Frisky, his Irish Sport Horse, aim to put the U.S. back in the medal count after coming up short in 2012. 8/6-8 Q; 8/9 M; 8/10-12 Q; 8/14 Q; 8/15 M; 8/16 Q; 8/17 M; 8/19 M

FENCING FRANCE HOPES TO RETURN TO THE FENCING PODIUM The fencing competition features one-day, single-elimination tournaments. Men and women compete in separate individual and team events, with foil, épée and sabre the featured disciplines. Scoring is based on how many touches, or body hits, each fencer gets. Usually dominant France is aiming to get back onto the podium after not winning a single medal in 2012 for the first time since 1960. Italy, which has won more fencing medals than any other country, is expected to again be competitive across most disciplines. Italian Paolo Pizzo and America’s Mariel Zagunis are among the athletes to watch in the men’s and women’s competitions, respectively. 8/6-14 M

FIELD HOCKEY

ONE OF THE OLDEST OLYMPIC SPORTS FEATURES PLENTY OF GOALS Field hockey is played on a 100-by-60 meter field by two teams of 11 players. Goals may only be scored from within a designated semi-circle, and only the goalkeepers are allowed to touch the ball with their bodies. The fast-moving sport features plenty of scoring along with thrilling penalty shoot-outs. On the men’s side, Germany looks for its third straight gold medal, and should face a strong challenge from Netherlands and Australia. Netherlands has dominated the women’s competition, bringing home the gold in 2008 and 2012. 8/6 - 8/19 Q; 8/18-19 M

Lydia Ko

In golf’s return to the Games for the first time since 1904, 60 men and 60 women compete in a 72-hole stroke play format at a newly constructed course designed by American architect Gil Hanse. Official World Golf Rankings determine each country’s lineup, with a maximum of four players allowed from a given nation. As of this writing, golf’s celebration on the world stage will be led by the U.S. threesome of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson on the men’s side, while Americans Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis, Canadian Brooke Henderson, and top-ranked Lydia Ko from New Zealand highlight the women. 8/11-13 Q; 8/14 M; 8/17-19 Q; 8/20 M

Gymnastics is divided into three disciplines: artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. Within artistic, there are 10 events: individual, team, floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault; horizontal, uneven and parallel bars, and balance beam. A total of 14 gold medals are awarded to men’s and women’s gymnasts. In rhythmic, there are women’s individual and group disciplines with two golds awarded. And in the trampoline, there are the men’s and women’s events with a gold medal awarded in each gender. Team USA, led by Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, should vie for gold in the women’s team event, while in the women’s all-around, rising American Simone Biles and Romania’s Larisa Iordache should bag hardware. In rhythmic, look for Ukraine’s Anna Rizatdinova, Belarus’ Melitina Staniouta and Russians Yana Kudryavtseva and Margarita Mamun to vie for podium space. In trampoline, historically China and the United States have been dominant. Gymnastics 8/3-4 Q; 8/6-7 Q; 8/8-11 M; 8/14-16 M; 8/17 Q Rhythmic Gymnastics 8/19 Q; 8/20-21 M Trampoline 8/12-13 M

INDOOR EXCITEMENT AND GOALS GALORE AT RIO’S FUTURE ARENA Handball offers 60 minutes of fast-paced action and plenty of goals, as two teams of seven pass the ball among teammates across a 40-by-20 meter indoor court and attempt to throw it into the opposition’s goal. Players may only hold the ball for only up to three seconds before dribbling, passing or shooting and only the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with their feet. Defending men’s champion France should expect to be challenged by Croatia and Russia, while Norway looks for its third-consecutive gold medal on the women’s side. 8/6-19 Q; 8/20-21 M

OLYMPIC SECURITY • 85,000 police and soldiers protecting an anticipated 600,000 foreign visitors • $640 million security budget • In light of recent attacks in Paris and Belgium and a recent threat by an alleged Islamic State militant, Brazil is raising its guard, sharing intelligence with foreign governments, conducting security drills and setting up joint facilities • Officers from more than 50 countries will help monitor security from a police hub

GOLD MEDAL RETURNEES HIGHLIGHT MARTIAL ARTS

Martial arts in the Olympics consists of taekwondo and judo. In taekwondo eight gold medals are awarded in four weight classes for men and women. Two-time gold medalist Steven Lopez of the U.S. returns for his fifth Games, and at 37 he aims to become the oldest Olympian ever to compete in his sport. Also in the medal mix are Turkey’s Servet Tazegul, Korea’s Lee Dae-Hoon and Spain’s Joel Gonzalez. Great Britain’s Jade Jones, China’s Wu Jingyu and the USA’s Paige McPherson are contenders on the women’s side. In Judo 14 gold medals are awarded in seven weight classes for each gender. Watch for defending Olympic heavyweight champion Teddy Riner of France and decorated American competitor Travis Stevens. Top women judokas include Cuba’s Idalys Ortiz, Brazil’s Mayra Aguiar and the USA’s Kayla Harrison, who in London became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in judo. M O D E R N P E N TAT H L O N

MODERN PENTATHLON FEATURES THE BEST OF MODERN AND CLASSIC ATHLETES If there is an Iron Man competition – one that requires excellence in a series of disciplines – in the Olympics it is the Modern Pentathlon. Athletes who compete in these events participate in fencing, swimming (200 meter) and equestrian sports, which is then followed by the Combined Event that requires them to run 3,200 meters while making four stops to shoot laser pistols (much like winter biathlon). “Modern” is the key word as this event has evolved through the years and once included discus, javelin, distance jumping and wrestling. Russian athletes have been the most consistent while the U.S. looks for Nathan Schrimsher of Colorado Springs to excel. 8/18 Q; 8/19-20 M

SAILING

RUGBY Rugby was an Olympic sport from 1900-1924 before taking an extended break until now. Back then, it was rugby union, with 15 players per team, but this time around it is rugby sevens, with seven per side, making the cut for the Olympics. In rugby, teams try to score as many goals as possible by carrying, passing, kicking and grounding the ball. There are men’s and women’s tournaments, with 12 squads in each beginning the competition in pool play and eight advancing to the quarterfinals with a shot at a medal. Both U.S. teams are expected to be competitive. 8/6-7 Q; 8/8 M; 8/9-10 Q; 8/11 M

SAILING: RIDING WIND AND WATER

SHOOTING

• Hollywood starlet Esther Williams, an accomplished swimmer, hoped to compete in synchronized swimming at the 1940 Olympics, but they were canceled due to World War II. • Sailing events at the first Summer Olympics in Athens in 1896 were canceled due to bad weather. Sailing made its Olympic debut four years later at the Paris games.

SHOOTING ATHLETES AIM HIGH Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Olympic shooting competition is the combination of modern and classic firearms. The shotgun sports, which remain trap and skeet, showcase the craftsmanship and balance that double-barreled shotguns have always been known for. The .22-caliber small-bore pistols, meanwhile, are all about performance and handling. The air rifles and air pistols showcase the development of modern firearms that rely on air rather than gunpowder. The shooting sports are anyone’s game. Although China excelled in 2012, U.S. skeet shooter Morgan Craft of Pennsylvania is among the favorites to shoot straight in Rio. 8/6-14 M

• Field hockey was first played on artificial turf at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in the 1976 Olympics. • Actress Geena Davis tried out for the USA archery team for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. • The first known archery competition was held in London in 1583.

• Child development expert Dr. Benjamin Spock won a gold medal in rowing at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. • After the 1924 Paris Summer Games, members of the Hungarian and Italian fencing teams settled a scoring dispute with an actual duel.

Ten gold medals are awarded among various categories in two size classes (one- and two-person crews), with six for men and four for women. On the men’s side, look for Australia to defend its 2012 gold medal from Austria, Croatia and the USA in the 470 (two person), while the Aussies and Germans are considered to be factors in the Laser (one person). Poland is a likely candidate for gold in the RS:X (one person), while New Zealand, Denmark and Spain are in a wide-open field in the 49er FX (two person). In the women’s competition, look for New Zealand to vie for gold in the 470, while France should bag hardware in the RS:X. 8/8-13 Q; 8/14-18 M; 8/19 Q

The field consists of 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams, with matches taking place in seven different stadiums across the country. The host nation should be in contention on the men’s side, as Brazilian star Neymar returns to avenge a loss to Mexico in the 2012 gold medal match. The U.S. women’s team, led by Hope Solo and Alex Morgan, looks to continue its domination, having won four of the five Olympic competitions. 8/3, 8/4, 8/6-7, 8/9-10, 8/12-13, 8/1617, 8/19-20

SWIMMING SWIMMING: A FINAL BOW FOR PHELPS?

We’ve heard this song before: The 2016 Games at Rio will be Michael Phelps’ final Olympic appearance. Indeed, the Olympics’ most decorated athlete has said that at the grand old age of 31, he will be hanging up his trunks after the Rio games, happy with whatever he adds this month to his 22 medals over three Olympiads. But there’s still life left in this old boy. After a short-lived retirement that included a reality-show appearance, a visit to the White House and a drunken driving arrest, Phelps came back to the 2015 Nationals and set record times in the 100m and 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley, so consider him a major factor at Rio in these events. As for other contenders for hardware, look to Americans Ryan Lochte, Nathan Adrian and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh. On the women’s side, American Missy Franklin will try to add to her five-medal haul in London, where she won gold in the 100m and 200m backstroke, the 4x100 medley and the 4x200 freestyle. Others in the medal mix include Americans Katie Ledecky and Katie Meili and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu. On a side note, Natalie Coughlin needs one medal to become the most decorated female swimmer. CHINA SMASHES TABLE TENNIS COMPETITION China has dominated since table tennis debuted as an Olympic sport in 1988, winning 24 gold medals and 47 medals in all. In Rio, the script should read much the same, given the Chinese count four of six of the world’s top-ranked men’s players and five of six on the women’s side. China also enters having swept gold medals at the 2015 and 2016 World Championships. Current world No. 1 Ma Long is the man to beat in singles, followed by second-ranked Fan Zhendong. Also watch for German duo Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Timo Boll. The ladies hierarchy includes China’s Li Xiaoxia, the defending singles gold medalist, compatriot Liu Shiwen, and Japan’s Ai Fukuhara and Kasumi Ishikawa, London silver medalists in the team competition. 8/6-9 Q; 8/10-11 M; 8/12-15 Q; 8/16-17 M

TENNIS THE GAME’S TOP PLAYERS HOLD COURT IN RIO

The biggest names in the sport gather at the brandnew Olympic Tennis Centre, which will remain as a permanent reminder of the Rio 2016 Games. Five gold medals will be awarded in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Defending men’s champion Andy Murray and his longtime rival Novak Djokovic will likely be the favorites, as this tournament should favor the hard-court specialists. Serena Williams, who brought home the singles gold in 2012 (also winning the doubles tournament with her sister Venus), should be the heavy favorite again in Rio. 8/6-11 Q; 8/12-14 M

Triathlon is composed of three disciplines: a 1,500m swim, 40,000m bike ride and 10,000m run, with separate competitions for men and women. British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee – who won gold and bronze medals, respectively, in 2012 – are back to try to keep the gold in the family, but 2012 silver-medalist Javier Gomez Noya of Spain hopes to prevent that. America’s best chances for a medal are on the women’s side with Sarah True, who finished 10 seconds away from a bronze in London, and Gwen Jorgensen, who had a disappointing performance in 2012 when her bike got a flat tire, and are among the contenders looking to challenge Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig, who hopes to repeat her gold medal-winning performance. 8/18 M; 8/20 M

Bolt remains man to beat One of the prime sporting events of the Summer Olympic games is surely track and field. All eyes will be on Jamaica’s Usain Bolt as he competes in what he says will be his final Olympics. The track and field competition still has it all: hurdles, sprints, marathons, relays and multi-events such as decathlon and heptathlon. There is also the throwing events such as shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, which showcase the Olympic competition in its purist form. But when runners such as Bolt and American medalist Justin Gatlin (who could be Bolt’s toughest competition) hit the running track, these events come to the Olympic forefront. The U.S. team usually does well in track and field, winning 28 medals, including nine gold, in 2012. Russia, too, is usually strong here, taking home 17 medals, including eight gold from London, while Jamaica, thanks (in part) to Bolt, won 12 medals including four gold. Other American athletes to keep an eye on include California’s Whitney Ashley, a former NCAA discus throwing champion at San Diego State, and discus and javelin thrower Brittany Borman. 8/12-21 M

• Table tennis balls are hollow and weigh approximately 2.7 grams. • No women were allowed to compete at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. • The five interlocking rings of the Olympic logo represent the five inhabited continents of the world (with North and South America counting as one continent). • Badminton is the only Summer Olympic sport in which the United States has never won a medal. • The average gold medal is 93 percent silver, 6 percent copper and 6 grams of gold. Olympic champions last received solid gold medals in 1912. • World war caused the Olympics to be canceled in 1916, 1940 and 1944. • Athletes in the ancient Olympic games competed in the nude.

WEIGHTLIFTING The world’s strongest athletes

WATER POLO The world’s best teams

gather for the ultimate test

duel in the pool Water polo, much like handball, is played by two teams of seven with the object of throwing the ball into the opposition’s goal. The matches consist of four periods of eight minutes, and each team has 30 seconds to complete its attack or risk losing possession of the ball. Fouls are called when a player touches the bottom or side of the pool, sinks the ball underwater and holds or pushes an opponent. On the men’s side, 2012 gold medalists Croatia should be challenged by Hungary and Serbia while the United States women’s team looks to defend its 2012 gold medal. 8/6, 8/8 - 8/18 Q; 8/19-20 M

Weightlifting is the ultimate test of strength, and has been identifying the world’s strongest athletes since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, with the women joining the competition at Sydney 2000. There are two types of lift: the ‘snatch’ and the ‘clean and jerk’. The snatch entails lifting the bar from the floor above the head in one movement. The clean and jerk is a two-stage lift, from the floor to the chest and then overhead. Each athlete is allowed three attempts, and the final score is the combined total of the highest two lifts. 8/6-10, 8/12-16 M

• Rain turned the first Olympic basketball final in 1936 in Berlin into a muddy affair, as it was held outdoors on clay tennis courts. The final score: United States 19, Canada 8. • In 1968, Swedish pentathlete Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall was the first athlete to fail a drug test. The drug? Beer, which he drank before the pistol shoot to calm his nerves.

Changes to Olympic wrestling competition Regular viewers of Olympic wrestling will notice changes in Rio. The women’s competition goes from four classes to six and the men (both freestyle and Greco-Roman) lose a weight class, from seven to six. In another change, the matches will consist of two rounds with cumulative scoring, instead of the previous “best-of-three” format. American Jordan Burroughs is a favorite to repeat his gold medal-winning performance from London in the 163pound men’s freestyle. On the women’s side, Japan’s Kaori Icho will try for an Olympic-record fourth wrestling gold medal when she fights in the 128-pound weight class. 8/14-21 M

• The 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne, Australia, were the first Olympics held in the Southern Hemisphere. • Tug of war was an event at every Summer Olympics from 1900 to 1920.

• The first ancient Olympics were held in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece.

VOLLEYBALL Digging Brazil as home-court favorite Volleyball is divided into two disciplines: indoor and beach. Indoors, world No. 1 Brazil is primed to capitalize on its home-court advantage. The Murilo Endres-led squad has been jumping out of the gym to avenge its stunning 2012 Olympic loss in the final to Russia, which won in five sets after losing the first two. The Russians will contend again, along with Team USA – the 2015 World Cup champions – and Poland. For the women, the top-ranked U.S. squad, led by Alisha Glass, is poised to win its first-ever Olympic gold. The beach tournament features three-time gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings – with new partner April Ross – vying for another championship. On the men’s side, contenders include Team USA’s Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena and the Brazilian duo of Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt.
