Black Family Day February 2014
Age Group Activities 2-4 AGE GROUP
The 2-4 children participated in an art and yoga class at We Create Brooklyn art space in Bedford Stuyvesant. Our children left with beautifully framed art projects and learned numerous yoga positions.
Our 2-4 children learned the fundamentals of financial literacy in a fun and interactive way. Our children brought their loose change and after learning about the distinctions between various coins, they used it to purchase ingredients for an ice cream sundae.
The age group trekked out to the Queens County Farm Museum for a country carnival, held in the orchard. Our children went on amusement rides and hayrides, played fun games and watched a magic show in the barn.
5-7 AGE GROUP
The age group gathered to learn and prepare some fun and healthy options as we approach the warmer months. Smoothies were the focus, and were made using a new tool, the Magic Bullet that impressed many of the moms so much that they actually may purchase one for their homes.
Families headed into the city to attend the amazing and still heartwarming presentation of The Lion King! From the elaborate costumes to the magical storyline, the kids were engaged and fascinated by the story. Afterwards, we were treated to a behind the scenes look of the play, and we even had the opportunity to take pictures with some of the cast.
STEM is such an important topic in the world today, so what better way to expose our children to the benefits of science than to spend an afternoon at the New York Hall of Science. Families spent the day perusing educational and entertaining exhibits.
8-10, 11-12 and Junior Teens AGE GROUPS
The 8-10 and Jr. Teens enjoyed an afternoon of music by and for kids at the Jazz Standard. Our children enjoyed a delicious meal alongside their parents as the house youth band performed magnificently.
Our 11-12 children participated in a Public Speaking Workshop where they learned the art of oral advocacy at the Brooklyn Public Library Macon branch. While the instructor provided our children with wonderful public advocacy techniques, he also instructed them on what not to do when public speaking. Our children presented pre-written and impromptu speeches that were critiqued by the instructor. This activity builds on the wonderful mock trial activity that occurred in November 2013 at the Macon branch where our children delivered opening and closing arguments. Our mothers should be commended for instilling excellent presentation skills to their children and for supporting the wonderful Macon branch.
The 11-12 children participated in a pizza party with a purpose where they laughed and fellowshipped while preparing dozens of boxes of food for the pantry at the Child Development Support Corporation. The children exclaimed, “[w]hen are we going to do this again?! after the activity concluded. Kudos to our mothers for instilling a dedication to service to their children!
Senior Teens
Our senior teens participated in an Etiquette Workshop designed to teach them critical skills that will allow them to make positive first impressions whether in their social lives or in today’s competitive business environment they will enter in the future.
The Senior Teens went to see After Night, a musical set at the famed Cotton Club that combines the big-band songs of Duke Ellington and the best dancing in town. The play stars Vanessa Williams and Dule Hill, both of whom are featured in pictures with our senior teens.
