Community

2022 Fall Fittja Stockholm, Sweden

Creating inclusivity for the community, bringing architecture to a welcoming scale for the people during it’s phase of identity seeking.

Fittja is a suburb town located a 30min subway trip away from downtown stockholm, it is one of the communities built during the Million Houses Project. The apartment buildings are built with prefab concrete panels from the era. The community is now seeking for a design that can reform its image through utilizing the local resources, to build a new community center for accommodating events and a marketplace for immigrant and Swedish people to freely interact and occupy. In addition, the design should also be adjustable and adaptable for ground floor renovations for existing and new coming businesses.

Double / Nothing

2022 Spring Providence

Adding the resonance with a respective distance and the intention to create a visual continuity. The experience of walking through the form contrasting to the context, stimulates and brings the attention towards both subjects in sight.

To curate this kind of visual and spatial experience, designing a “Superadjacency system” was necessary to perceive the resonance between two objects. This can not only be directly presented by the physical closeness, but also occurs within intentional placements in space. Implies the resonance and highlight the differences. ground floor plan

Act in Oblivion

2020 Spring 1 Times Square, Manhattan

This thesis explores the time acceleration unconsciously caused by the image driven media. Proposing an investigation brings time awareness through observation and expression of different rates of speed based on the movement of imagery, body and sound.

Research Observation to Analysis

The perception of time is fleeting, and the accelerated pace of life is becoming more prominent in social aspects and an emerging topic on social media platforms.

The research is site-specific, located in Times Square, a place with the most saturated media content. Focused within 1 Times Square, a vacant building resulted from the coverage of media.

The investigation started by questioning how the rapid increase of media influenced the way we occupy a space in response to time acceleration. Simultaneously, analyzing the occupants in Times Square in the relevance to time.

Entering and merging oneself into the media saturation, people undergo a physical and psychological experience sequence. The tourists and passersbys are all drawn into the behavior cycle.

The Anticipation, the Mergence, the Recognition, the Oblivious Activation.

This interior experience aims to bring people’s awareness to this saturation of our surrounding media and how it transforms our occupancy of interior and exterior. Begin with muting the occupants from the exterior sight and sound, they then enter the interiority of as the datum of time to observe time in both physical and virtual-scape.

This interior is providing both physical and virtual environments to observe. In the physical space, the interior is acting as a datum of time for occupants to articulate and observe two scales of time, media time defined by cutting frequency and body time defined by movements. Through this experience, occupants are redirected through a journey of muting, exposing, and submerging in the sequence of the interior, exterior, and virtual dimensions.

*virtual experience found in personal website.

In the virtual VR space, individual occupants experience an inversion of influence . They are exploring and experiencing the phenomenon of merging and activation caused by human coexistence with media. The vacancy of the current building is the death of its horizontal occupying of architecture Thus, the VR experience is aiming to bring the visitor onto a journey of inversion of what has been taken for granted.

In the virtual-scape, experiencing a inversion of imagery. The directory of the Times Square billboard has become the active influence of the travel sequence of the interior experience. The billboards are now displaying inwards to the visitors.

This experience in VR is a tool to bring public awraeness toward this neglect of interior occuppancy and using their view in the virtual as the metaphor of media in the physical space to guide the visitors through the designed circulation. virtual circulation

Each individual room is suspended from the physical traveling path.

Each room is supported by a primary structure and a secondary cable connected to the ceiling to lift off the weight.

The handrails are doubled to secure the suspended screens for projection and create a closeness between media and the action of holding the handrail.
