Participants— By design, this charrette not only required students to collaborate cross-culturally, but faculty to collaborate as well. Swedish and American instructors were responsible for co-designing the learning objectives and the instructional tools.

Student Testimonies— After the intense time together working and playing, basically birthing a shared community, the students were surveyed and these are some of their summative observations:

(TR) From this partnership I have learned more about how to deal with people who are culturally different from me.The charrette also taught me how to work better with a team of my peers, and how to rely on other people instead of micromanaging things myself. I have come away from this trip with a better understanding of how other parts of the world function. Until now I kind of had a stigma that the whole world was just like America, but there are cultural nuances that America should adopt from the rest of the world.

(PB) I had such a wonderful time with the charrette. I anticipated that it would be a great challenge when collaborating with the Swedish students, due to language and cultural differences. However, everything went very smoothly and we created an exciting concept that I can’t wait to push to the next level. The charrette allowed me to learn a good deal about this new culture and about myself as well.
(BB) The entire experience was fascinating and challenging. It was a new experience working with the students of Halmstad university and seeing how they approached problems and how they worked with us toward a solution. It was a very memorable experience.

(LG) My experience was great with the Halmstad partnership. It was a great opportunity to work with students from another country that do the same type of thing as we do. I learned a lot about the processes to an end result, and the thought process leading up to the end result. The other students were a balance to us—this created a functional and highly creative group. The charrette has also inspired further research and motivation for when we return home, which is exciting. Overall, the experience has given me a better understanding of the whole process and given me motivation for new ways of being creative.

(TR) Traveling has always been a dream of mine. I made myself a promise, that I would make it happen one day. Now I can’t believe that it has. I’ve learned and experienced so many things that will be unforgettable. Not only did I learn about a new culture, but I began to really cherish and be proud of mine. This has been a life changing experience and it has given me wonderful memories that I greatly value.

(LG) The trip itself has given me a hunger to travel and know other languages. I’ve enjoyed being surrounded by different cultures and life-styles. I hope to travel even more in the future. I’ve also changed a little in my process of design. I think that a certain degree of it can be thought out and looked over before it is put into action. I think that the trip has changed my mindset of many things as far as design and international awareness.
