Equestrian- Extensive experience specializing in the hunter/jumper discipline, breeding, management and training for upper level national competition. OVERVIEW During my nearly 2 years at CallisonRTKL I worked with a talented team of planners and landscape architects in our international group, through partnership with Dar al Mimar Architecture (D.M.A.), in Egypt. I gained knowledge and experience of larger planning projects from preconcept through schematic design as well as the development of design guidelines for such projects. THIS RESORT DEVELOPMENT WEST OF ALEXANDRIA, ALONG THE NORTHERN COAST OF EGYPT IS THE FIRST PROJECT I WORKED ON AT CALLISONRTKL I AIDED IN DESIGN DEVELOPMENT, DIAGRAM CONSTRUCTION, SITE RENDERINGS, AND DESIGN GUIDELINES

DISTRICT IDENTITIES

THE SITE IS DIVIDED INTO SEVEN (7) DISTINCT DISTRICTS. THE BORDERS OF THE DISTRICTS WILL BE A SPECIAL TREATMENT THAT UNIFIES THE ENTIRE DEVELOPMENT AND CONNECTS THE DISTRICTS VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY. AS A DISTRICT APPROACHES THE ROAD, ARCHITECTURAL STYLES BECOME MORE SIMPLIFIED VERSIONS OF THE STYLE SO THAT THEY COMPLEMENT THE STYLE(S) THAT ARE ADJACENT.

EXISTING GREEK GREEK CYCLADIC GREEK VILLAGE ITALIAN VILLAGE TUSCAN HILLSIDE AN EXTENSION OF THE EXISTING RESORT COMMUNITY. SIMPLISTIC GREEK ARCHITECTURE MIMICKING THE ADJACENT HOMES TERRACE TOWARDS THE SEA.

INFLUENCED BY DENSE ACTIVE GREEK ISLAND VILLAGES. THE STYLE ADDS IN VARIOUS ACCENT COLORS CREATING INDIVIDUALITY WHILE MAINTAINING ICONIC WHITE AND BLUE ELEMENTS.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE OF A GREEK VILLAGE, THE TEXTURE AND COLORS BEGIN TO CHANGE WITH HUES OF WHITE, CREAM AND BEIGE. ACCENT COLORS ARE MORE FREQUENT.

THE FRONT DOOR TO THE DEVELOPMENT THIS DISTRICT IS INFLUENCED BY THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE OF AN ITALIAN VILLAGE.

DEFINED BY THE TUSCAN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE THIS DISTRICT PROVIDES MORE SINGLE FAMILY VILLAS, AND TOWN HOUSES. CENTERED AROUND FAMILY AND CHILDREN.

THIS AREA DEFINED BY SIMPLIFIED ARCHITECTURE THAT TRANSITIONS BACK TO WHITE WALLS OF THE GREEK STYLE, WHILE THE TILED ROOFS AND TRADITIONAL ACCENTS RELATE TO THE TUSCAN STYLE.

LAGOON FRONT VILLAS AND TOWN HOUSES ARE REMINISCENT OF THE TUSCAN VILLAGE WITH A FLAIR OF VENETIAN.

FURTHER STUDY OF THE CYCLADIC DISTRICT WAS THE NEXT STEP. BUILDING OFF OF THE DESIRED B.U.A., TYPOGRAPHY RESTRICTIONS, AND BUILDING TYPOLOGIES, WE DEVELOPED A MASTER PLAN FOR THIS DISTRICT THAT MET THE GOALS OF THE DEVELOPER. BUILDINGS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY SLOPING DOWN TOWARDS THE LAGOON, ENSURING VIEWS TO WATER FOR ALL RESIDENTS. THE BUILDING TYPOLOGIES MEET THE REQUIRED B.U.A. AND ARE ARRANGED TO ALLOW FOR SUFFICIENT PARKING REQUIREMENTS WHILE ALLOWING FOR A COHESIVE PEDESTRIAN NETWORK.

CITY OF THE SUN - 6TH OF OCTOBER, EGYPT

LOCATED JUST WEST OF THE GREAT PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT, WE WORKED IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR PARTNERS IN EGYPT D.M.A. AS A TEAM, WE DEVELOPED THE OVER ALL VISION FOR THE SITE. WE THEN DIVIDED THE SITE INTO COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL. I WORKED WITH CALLISONRTKL TO DEVELOP THE COMMERCIAL AND NON-RESIDENTIAL PORTIONS OF THE SITE, WHILE D.M.A. DEVELOPED THE RESIDENTIAL PORTION. ALONG WITH DEVELOPING THE SITE LAYOUT, I ALSO AIDED IN THE CREATION OF DIAGRAMS, ILLUSTRATIVE RENDERS, AND SKETCH-UP MODELS. THE WORK SHOWN HERE IS FROM THE CONCEPTUAL MASTER PLAN SUBMISSION.

CONCEPT TOOL BOX

CONCEPT

INSPIRED BY THEME PARKS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, THE CITY OF THE SUN IS COMPRISED OF TWO MAIN AXIS DIVING THE SITE INTO FOUR DISTINCT ZONES. A PEDESTRIAN ONLY AXIS CREATES A DIRECT VIEW CORRIDOR TO THE PYRAMIDS, WITH THE HEIGHT OF LUXURY, “FANTASY LAND” LOCATED AT THE SOUTH WEST CORNER OF THE SITE. THIS AXIS CONNECTS WITH THE ENTERTAINMENT ZONE, “MAIN STREET”. THE SECOND AXIS TRANSITIONS FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE. INSPIRED BY THE RICH CULTURE & HERITAGE OF THE SURROUNDING. A FAMILY ORIENTED ZONE PROVIDES A CONNECTION WITH A PAST “FRONTIER LAND” AND EXTENDS TO “TOMORROW LAND” WITH THE MODERN UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITAL DISTRICT. THE HEART OF THE PROJECT IS THE “CENTRAL HUB”, THIS IS WHERE THE AXIS CROSS, BLENDING THE PAST AND FUTURE IN A CELEBRATION PLAZA THAT WILL ACCOMMODATE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES.

PROGRAMMING

CallisonRTKL WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESIGN OF THE COMMERCIAL ZONE. WITHIN THIS ZONE THE DESIRED PROGRAM ELEMENTS AND THEIR B.U.A. WERE ARRANGED PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE DESIGN CONCEPT AND TOOL BOX. WITHIN THIS ZONE A HIGH END RETAIL MALL, OUTLET MALL, ANCHOR MALL, FOOD COURTS, MIXED-USE TOWERS, HOTELS, HOSPITAL, UNIVERSITY, INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, OFFICE SPACE, AND AN ENTERTAINMENT THEMED PARK CAN BE FOUND.

I-CITY NEW CAIRO (SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE) - NEW CAIRO, EGYPT I-CITY NEW CAIRO IS THE FIRST DEVELOPMENT TO FOLLOW THE I-CITY “4 LEVEL CITY” THEOLOGY. CALLISONRTKL WORKED CLOSELY WITH D.M.A. AND DEVELOPERS DAR AL MIMAR GROUP TO FORM THE MARKETING FRAMEWORK, AS WELL AS THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN FOR THIS NEARLY 500 ACRE PROJECT. THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS. I HELPED IN THE LAYOUT AND DESIGN OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS, ENSURING THE TARGETED B.U.A. WAS MET, AS WELL AS IN THE PRODUCTION OF GRAPHICS AND SKETCH-UP MODEL.

THE 4 LEVELS OF THE I-CITY ARE, LIMITED CARS, RAISED ISLAND NEIGHBORHOODS, LIVING IN A BIG PARK, AND A PEDESTRIAN CORNICHE WHICH TIES ALL THE NEIGHBORHOODS AND THE ENTIRE PROJECT TOGETHER. THE PRIMARY CORNICHE WRAPS THE CENTRAL PARK, WITH SECONDARY NEIGHBORHOOD CORNICHES IN EACH NEIGHBORHOOD WHICH INCREASES ACCESS TO THE ENTIRE SITE. THE ABOVE SECTIONS SHOW THE RELATIONSHIPS OF EACH NEIGHBORHOOD TO THE CORNICHE. TO THE LEFT, ARE TYPICAL CORNICHE CONDITIONS.

ROYAL HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD EACH OF THE FOUR ISLAND NEIGHBORHOODS HAVE THEIR OWN IDENTITY AND ARE CENTERED AROUND A PRIVATE CLUB SPACE, MOSQUE AND NEIGHBORHOOD RETAIL FOR THE RESIDENTS.

I-CITY NEW CAIRO IS THE FIRST DEVELOPMENT TO FOLLOW THE I-CITY “4 LEVEL CITY” THEOLOGY. CALLISONRTKL WORKED CLOSELY WITH D.M.A. IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LANDSCAPE. ONE OF THE 4 LEVELS IS “LIVING IN A PARK”. EVERY RESIDENT SHOULD LIVE WITHIN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO A VARIETY OF OPEN SPACES. I HELPED OUR TEAM DEVELOP THE LANDSCAPE CONCEPT, CREATING THEME BOARDS AND PHOTOSHOP RENDERINGS OF THE CONCEPT OF BOTH THE CENTRAL PARK, AS WELL AS THE INDIVIDUAL NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS AND CLUB SPACES.

CENTRAL PARK

THE CENTRAL PARK IS THE PRIMARY CENTER OF ACTIVITY WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT. THREE AXIS DEVELOP THE PROGRAM AND CHARACTERISTICS WITHIN THE PARK. THE PARK ALSO OFFERS GATEWAY OPPORTUNITIES TO THE NEIGHBORHOODS. WITHIN THE PARK THERE ARE SEVERAL DESIGNATED “LEASABLE ZONES” THESE ARE PROGRAMED AREAS TO BE OPERATED EITHER AS ADDITIONAL EVENT SPACE FOR NEIGHBORHOOD CLUBS, OR FOR A PRIVATE OPERATOR TO OPERATE. THESE ZONES SHOULD FEEL AS PART OF THE OVER ALL PARK AND BE ACCESSIBLE TO THE RESIDENTS WHEN THEY ARE NOT IN USE.

ENTRY DESIGNS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL NEIGHBORHOODS IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE THE UNIQUE STYLES OF EACH NEIGHBORHOOD, WHILE UNIFYING THE SITE THROUGH CONSISTENT USE OF MATERIALS. THE FOLLOWING IMAGES ARE OF POTENTIAL SCREENING WALL IDEAS. THIS WALL WILL ENCLOSE THE ENTIRE PROJECT, AND SHOULD BLEND WELL WITH EACH OF THE INDIVIDUALS DESIGN STYLES.

After the Schematic Design Phase we moved on to formalizing the design of the Royal Gardens Neighborhood. I had a large part in the design of this neighborhood, ensuring that the desired B.U.A. and parking was met, as well as production of most of the graphics. THE NATURE OF THIS EXERCISE IS VERY DIAGRAMMATIC AS A LARGE PORTION OF IT WAS ENSURING THAT THE DESIRED B.U.A. WAS MET, AND THEN DEVELOPING A SERIES OF PARKING OPTIONS TO PRESENT TO THE CLIENT.

OPTION 1- PRIMARILY SURFACE PARKING. THE ONLY BASEMENTS SHOWN ARE THOSE WHICH ARE UNDERSTOOD TO BE INHERENTLY INCLUDED IN THE PROPOSED PROTOTYPES. THIS OPTION MEETS THE REQUIRED B.U.A. HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT MEET THE PARKING REQUIREMENT.

OPTION 2- ADDS 1 LEVEL BASEMENT PARKING TO THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDINGS. IN THIS SCENARIO, THE B.U.A. IS MET, PARK VILLAS ARE ABLE TO BE ADDED TO SCREEN THE GARAGES FROM MAJOR PUBLIC ZONES, PROVIDING ADDITIONAL B.U.A.. HOWEVER, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH PARKING TO MEET INDIVIDUAL BUILDING PARKING REQUIREMENTS.

OPTION 3- THE ADDITION OF A SECOND BASEMENT WHERE TOPOGRAPHY IS MOST BENEFICIAL, AND THE OPTION FOR SHARED BASEMENTS IS AVAILABLE ALLOWS FOR THE PARKING REQUIREMENT FOR THE ENTIRE SITE TO BE MET, WHILE MEETING THE B.U.A AND ALLOWING FOR THE PARK VILLAS. THIS STILL DOES NOT MEET THE INDIVIDUAL BUILDING PARKING REQUIREMENTS, AND PROVIDES AN UNEQUAL DISTRIBUTION IN PARKING, MEANING IT IS NOT EASILY ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL RESIDENTS.

OPTION 4- THE ADDITION OF SURFACE LOTS ALLOWS FOR THE DESIRED B.U.A. TO BE MET, WITH THE ADDITION OF PARK VILLAS. INDIVIDUAL BUILDING PARKING REQUIREMENTS ARE MET. STREET AND SURFACE PARKING ALLOWS FOR RESIDENTIAL COURTYARDS IN SOME BUILDINGS, WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN LOST TO PARKING. THIS SCHEME DOES NOT MEET THE DESIRED 1 SPACE BELOW AND .5 SPACES SURFACE PARKING, AND SOMETIMES COVERED SURFACE PARKING LOTS HAVE TO BE UTILIZED IN ORDER TO MEET THE PARKING NEEDS.

A PRIMARY CONCERN WITH THE DESIGN OF THE ROYAL GARDENS WAS HOW TO PARK IT. THE CLIENT HAD WAS STRONGLY AGAINST 2 LEVEL UNDERGROUND PARKING. THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SERIES OF STUDIES THAT I DEVELOPED WE WERE ABLE TO SHOW THAT IN ORDER TO PARK AT THE DESIRED B.U.A. AND THE RATIO OF 1:1.5 AND ALLOWING FOR ONLY 1 LEVEL OF GARAGE PARKING THE PUBLIC SPACE AND “PARK LEVEL” OF THE 4 LEVEL CITY WOULD BE HIGHLY COMPROMISED. THE IDEAL SCENARIO WOULD BE TO HAVE STRATEGICALLY PLACE SEVERAL 2 LEVEL GARAGES WHICH WOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH FOR ADJACENT BUILDINGS TO SHARE, WHILE MAINTAINING ONE LEVEL PARKING, STREET, AND SURFACE LOTS THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE SITE. DURING OUR MEETING WITH THE CLIENT THESE DIAGRAMS AND NUMBERS HELPED AID THE DISCUSSION AND GAVE THEM A VISUAL UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE “4 LEVEL CITY” AND THEIR DESIRED PARKING STRATEGY WOULD BE IN DIRECT CONFLICT WITH ONE ANOTHER.

OVERVIEW I spent just over a year at WDG Architecture. Beginning my career under the guidance of architects provided me a different perspective of urban design and planning. I enjoyed seeing this side of the process. During my time here, I worked on the site planning and design process of mixed-use, multifamily and office buildings.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE - CASHIERS, NORTH CAROLINA

COLLABORATED WITH PROJECT ARCHITECT IN CREATION OF SKETCH-UP MODEL, SPECIFICALLY, MODIFICATION OF THE LANDSCAPE IN THIS MOUNTAINOUS SITE. THE RESULTING MODE WAS USED IN PERSPECTIVES, AS WELL AS DESIGN DRAWINGS. AIDED IN THE DETAILING OF DESIGN DRAWINGS. ALL DRAWINGS SHOWN WERE CREATED IN SKETCH-UP, AND DIMENSIONED USING LAYOUT.

INTERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN DESIGN

MONTREAL, CANADA SUMMER INTERN SUMMER 2010

OVERVIEW I started riding horses before I could walk. In the summer of 2010, I was fortunate to work in Montreal with one of the top equestrian design firms, International Equestrian Design. During this time my CAD skills improved, and I was responsible for responding to RFPs. I also learned about different types of arena footing, researched new sustainable technologies and learned about approaches to farm design. In addition to developing conceptual master plans and planting plans, I worked closely with a web consultant to develop an updated framework for a website. PRIVATE RESIDENCE

I WORKED CLOSELY TO DEVELOP THIS CONCEPTUAL DESIGN, ENSURING THE DESIRED PROGRAM WOULD BE MET WHILE RESPECTING THE CONSTRAINTS OF THE SITE.

ONE OF THE DETAILS I WAS ABLE TO WORK ON WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GROB JUMP. I LEARNED HOW THE JUMP WOULD BE IMPLEMENTED AND CONSTRUCTED INTO AN EXISTING ARENA. I WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR RESEARCHING AND DEVELOPING AN APPROPRIATE PLANTING PALATE THAT WOULD BE VISUALLY PLEASING, NON-TOXIC TO HORSES, AS WELL AS AID IN THE FUNCTION OF THE PARTICULAR TRAINING OBSTACLE.

ELEUTHERA, THE BAHAMAS

MASTERS THESIS 2013

OVERVIEW The small town of James Cistern on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas is one of the poorest settlements on the island. As as a result of the shift in economics from an agricultural economy to a resort tourism based economy has dramatically impacted all aspects of life in The Bahamas, especially in James Cistern. Located in the hurricane belt, this small town is looking to recreate itself as a self sustaining community and a destination for cultural and eco-tourism. My thesis focused on creating this vision as well as combating the effects that climate change and rising sea levels will have on this community.

A GRAVEYARD OF SILOS ALONG THE QUEEN’S HIGHWAY JUST NORTH OF JAMES CISTERN IS THE ONLY REMNANTS OF A ONCE VIBRANT AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY.

In the analysis current zones of activity were located. The town has always had one of the strongest softball teams in the Caribbean. Building off of this and other existing landscape features and uses, James Cistern is transformed into an established place that fulfills the vision.
