Academy of Art University launches student-produced one eighty magazine during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week Fashion Journalism students cover fashion, art, photography and lifestyle in the 106-page full-color premiere issue San Francisco, CA, August 25, 2008 - Academy of Art University today announced the September 2008 launch of a new magazine produced by its Fashion Journalism students. one eighty magazine will cover fashion, art, photography, and lifestyle in San Francisco as well as across the country and internationally, offering both its onsite and online students the opportunity to publish work and build their portfolios. one eighty will be published twice a year to coincide with two of the University’s fashion shows: the September graduate show during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week and the April San Francisco Graduation and Awards Ceremony. 10,000 copies of the premiere issue will be distributed at galleries, cafes, museums, and bookstores throughout San Francisco and 1,000 copies at the September 5 th graduate show in New York. Distribution will increase with the second issue slated for April 2009. The website will launch in 2009. “I congratulate the Fashion Journalism students in creating a magazine of such professional quality. It is a testimony to the caliber of the programs we offer at the University,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of the University. “I am excited that the online students will have this platform as well and for the collaborations across concentrations and departments within the University. I’m already looking forward to the next issue.” Students collaborated with industry professionals such as Michael Fink, Saks Fifth Avenue VP of Women’s Fashion, who guest-styled a student for the story ‘I’ve Been Finked,’ Sari Wynne, fashion photographer for Workgroup Agency, stylist Michael Carbaugh, Examiner.com blogger Dino-Ray Ramos, and Paul Wilner, freelance writer for the Los Angeles Times and former style editor at San Francisco Chronicle. Students styled The Creeps, a scooter gang in San Francisco, for the story ‘Leader of the Pack’ as well as produced editorials using collections from alumni such as Sara Shepherd, Justin Kennedy, Quyen Nguyen, Alice Yim and two recent graduates, Ronnie Escalante and Alyssa Prentice, who are presently interning at Chado Ralph Rucci in New York. In the ‘Show Us the Munny, Doll’ story, design students revamped Kidrobot’s Munny Doll. Other stories include an interview with fashion designer Koos van den Akker, who set up shop at the University this summer as a resident designer, reviews of Jill Stuart’s beauty line, Gus Van Sant’s new biopic on Harvey Milk, and an upcoming compilation of work by ‘20s Vogue photographer Edward Steichen. Humor was injected through clever style horoscopes and a posthumous interview with Yves Saint Laurent in ‘Channeling YSL.’ The magazine is written, photographed and produced by the students under the direction of Cheryl Locke, Fashion Journalism Coordinator and a former editor for Elle.com and InStyle magazine, and design instructor, Jonathan Kyle Farmer. “Our role was guidance,” said Cheryl. “Putting out a magazine is a collaborative effort and I am satisfied that the students gained a deeper understanding in the production process having worked with printers, model agencies, pr companies, designer showrooms, vintage dealers, and of course all the contributors who helped to make the premiere issue so great.” (more)

Sustainability
Design Research
Leadership
Creative Design Practice.
Through my research over the past seven years I’ve gained a thorough understanding of sustainability issues impacting fashion within the broader context of sustainable lifestyles. Fashion design needs to be examined within the systems within which it exists, in particular in relation to business models and the larger global economic systems. Fashion also requires examining not just from a supply chain and production perspective; it needs investigating within the cultural and social systems within which it is consumed and used. My expertise is demonstrated through various publications, including Shaping Sustainable Fashion, the book published in February 2011 of which I was co-editor.
Through undertaking a PhD I’ve gained a broad sense of design research and the various approaches and research methodologies informing the field. I have an in-depth understanding of potential areas for cross-disciplinary research collaborations, and I have high-profile research contacts in universities around the world. Innovative design research creates immense potential for developing forward-thinking curriculum, as demonstrated by the zero-waste fashion design course. A survey exhibition of zero-waste fashion design, Yield, will open in New Zealand in March 2011 and NYC in fall 2011.
Running my own business for three years was an introduction into leadership skills, which I have continued to build upon for the past seven years. I am currently undertaking a seminar series to further my leadership skills, with a further short course planned for fall 2010. I handle challenges with integrity, and I am capable of inspiring my peers into seeing new possibilities within the work we do together. More recently, managing challenging situations with colleagues in a sensitive manner with minimal impact to students has been a particular focus. Chairing the SoF Sustainability Committee and taking the lead with the SoF Sustainability Club demonstrate leadership in the area of my expertise.
I’ve developed my signature as a designer for the past eleven years. My interpretation of creativity in design practice is not limited to how a garment looks or how it is cut, but also how someone will live in and with it, wear it. Parsons and The New School have long histories in leading in innovative education, and I am able to contribute towards ensuring this history continues from a somewhat unique, research-driven creative design practice. Invitations to participate in exhibitions, such as Zero-Waste in Chicago in March 2011 and Boutique in Helsinki in fall 2012 demonstrate an international recognition of my design practice.

Futures Research
Fashions future? What is this? There is no real way of predicting the future only educated guesses. Forecasting in fashion education is typically prediction of trends or color for forth coming seasons. Six years ago I contributed to the development of a Masters program at the University of East London called “FASHION FUTURES” built on a project I designed and taught with BA students on a Fashion Design Degree. I designed “Ep.O.ch” an exhibition of IDEAS supported and mentored by Martin Raymond of Viewpoint magazine and www.thefuturelaboratory.com As a guest on a panel with the Landor corporation at the “Futurprft: Salon Series” in 2009 FUTURE PERFECT. Society, business, and technology—they’re advancing and converging, faster and faster every day. So what does that mean for the future? And, as we evolve, what do we stand to gain—or lose? More recently I contributed to an article in Surface Magazine and Surface Magazine (China) entitled: Design on Delivery. I am now developing an elective “The Reflective Designer” for BFA Juniors that embrace these ideas and assist students in seeing the world in the broader context.
Kyle
Director of BFA
This is a topic I have been Subconsciously exploring for over 12 years. Recently however I have focused on making it a central component of my teaching and practice and it has developed into the foundations of a PHD proposal to both the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, where even the Title is visual and not written. Visual Literacy’s and Design Communication
Leadership
Creative teaching methods.
Drawing has always been my first vernacular, enabling me to converse with the world and communicate my ideas. As an educator I have worked with many a student that like myself have dyslexia. And visual communication has been a lifeline. The School of Fashion has a longstanding reputation for its drawing and illustration skills. I recognize that within the current syllabus however there is no freedom, for those who cannot draw to succeed as designers and for those who are exceptional drawers but not designers to succeed or focus within the field of fashion illustration. Supporting faculty and students to find their own voice, their own systems, their own language, is key to the future success of The SoF portfolio. I see possiblities in developing new majors and in turn generating not only designers but also creative pattern cutters, illustrators, stylists and computer specialists that can with confidence speak the many languages of fashion.
Good leadership comes from being able to not only direct but to also relinquish control, to provide support for others to do what it is they do best, to not dictate but instead open up conversation and workshop ideas as a collective. It is also going to able to convince those who are unsure to trust the not knowing is what holds the most potential. My leadership skills have evolved from working in industry as a designer director, and from teaching. From day one at University of East London I have been involved on committees responsible for developing the Image of the programs I have taught on. At the Academy of Art University in 2008 I launched a Fashion Magazine called “180 magazine” that is now on its 6th issue, which every season is on the seats at NYC Fashion Week. Since joining Parsons in 2009 I have been responsible for the creative direction/design of School of Fashions participation within the “5 School Show” 2010 and now the SoF presence at this years End of Year Show “FIVESIXTY 7th, the Living fashion magazine: Issue one: Fashion:isms. Being able to be a leader and manage such large projects come from believing in the project and the desire to always raise the bar. In November 2010 I was made the Coordinator of Senior concepts curriculum for the BFA program as part of the job I have had to gain the trust of faculty that have been at Parsons for many years. It has presented a number of hurdles some easier than others but overall a more collegial and transparent Senior year is unfolding.
Teaching was never the plan. It was stumbled upon and rapidly become a passion. I have never been able to simply go into a class giving honesty and direct critique. Very early in my teaching career I came to realize that Creative Briefing was the foundation in stimulating students, some of the latest incarnations of this have been used on the MFA Fashion Design and Society program where I have worked closely with Director Shelley Fox on such projects (See attached project briefs). I have encouraged students to approach design through many media but only ever after building a strong research foundation. Lecturing at a number of symposiums including “The Arts of Fashion symposium” in 2010 in Philadelphia. And in South Korea at the “Seoul Fashion Biennal” where I was the keynote speaker, My teaching is about nurturing personal design philosophy and processes, this has resulted in my being able to place students in design internships and design, illustration and textile design positions internationally at labels such as Victor and Rolf, Galliano, Balenciaga, DVF, and Gareth Pugh. As a collaborator myself I encourage students to look beyond the world of fashion not only for inspiration but also to embrace new technologies and to be open to new processes. Every semester I start with a simple statement: “A pair of pants will always be a pair of pants, a jacket a jacket, a shirt a shirt, the only thing that will change that is if we grow extra body parts, even then it’ll still be a pair of pants but with 3 legs instead of 2. Your only limitation is your imagination, and how your apply technology, processes, innovation in production techniques and fabric and by always asking WHY? Everything has NOT been done before at least not by you, so indulge and question, learn the rules then break them. Make mistakes and learn from them but be open to those IDEAS that present themselves, trust your instinct and don’t give up, designers are problem solvers and that’s now what you are problem solver so find the problems and solve them”

Nurturing Industry Leaders
Nurturing design leaders There is currently a disconnect between the BFA and MFA programs within the School. Through our teaching within both, we are capable of developing the BFA curriculum towards ensuring that some of our BFA graduates are capable of undertaking an MFA. This is to guarantee that in moving forward, both programs will produce design leaders of the future.
Design Design Futuring Futuring
A sustainable Fashion Future
A sustainable fashion future Our common goal should be working towards an era of fashion where the word ‘sustainable’ has become redundant through embedment into thinking and practice. Whilst this may be several decades away, we must work towards it now, keeping the short and long-term simultaneously at sight. We also see this as sustaining the School and its leadership in fashion design education globally.
Visualizing Sustainability
Research through practise.
Visualizing sustainability Much available information on sustainability can be initially daunting for fashion design students. Our combined expertise in sustainability and visual literacy creates new possibilities for educating our students and the industry more effectively. We demonstrated this ability with the sustainability tiles within the Periodic Table of Fashion Elements, created collaboratively for the Five Schools Show in May 2010
Research through practice During the past two decades design research that incorporates design practice has emerged as a viable methodology. We’ve both experimented and succeeded with research that incorporates design practice, and see potential for creatively incorporating similar research methodologies into undergraduate curriculum, to support effective and relevant learning among the student body.
Inspiring on SoF RSCP
Joint leadership, complimentary skill sets.
Design futuring Being able to imagine likely future scenarios for fashion design is becoming critical, in a situation where the global number of fashion design graduates, often trained towards one model of fashion design, far exceeds what the industry needs, whilst many current and near-future needs are not being catered to. We have an opportunity to strategically identify new, diverse opportunities for fashion design education, including working closely with Maura Jurgrau, the digital coordinator, who has a broad vision and in-depth expertise of technologies in fashion design
Inspiring SoF RSCP The School currently has a relatively low research profile. Working together with Yvonne Watson, the Chair of the SoF RSCP committee, we aim to inspire our peers to engage in research, scholarship and creative practice, to enrich the expertise and teaching practice within the school, as well as raise the School’s international research profile. One of us is about to complete a PhD and the other is embarking on one, providing ample opportunities to support our peers in undertaking graduate study
Joint leadership: complimentary skill sets During the past year we have demonstrated that we thrive through collaborations even when unexpected challenges arise. Successful collaborations include the Five Schools Show, the Fashion Show lecture and the Zero-Waste exhibition. We reflect on the successes and learn from the challenges, in order to improve our new collaborative ventures. We take inspiration from Simon Collins, the Dean, and Yvonne Watson, the Director of Academic Affairs, who have worked together using the unique expertise of each in the past year to affect challenging changes within the school. We are similarly complimentary and work successfully with our two leaders Leadership in pedagogy ‘The Fashion Show’ lecture, a collaborative venture in December 2010, demonstrated creative thinking about modes of Leadership in delivery in fashion design education. Given our stated mission to educate creative design leaders, we take creative briefing Pedagogy as part of that mission. Examples include the ‘hole in the map’ brief for the MFA students in August 2010, and the mind mapping briefing for BFA Juniors in February March 2011.

PARSONS The MFA in Fashion Design and Society is an advanced degree for talented, emerging fashion designers who are poised to become the next generation of industry leaders through a studio-based program that fosters experimentation. The program was inspired by Donna Karan, whose own career has embraced a broad view of fashion and helped define a new chapter in American fashion design.
