MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 67th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only ten football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in March of 2009. The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to seven its number of neutral site post season events – football (Ford Field, Detroit), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland), softball (Firestone Stadium, Akron) and baseball (All Pro Freight Stadium, Avon, Ohio). In addition, the SPIRE facility will also serve as the site for the 2014 women’s swimming & diving championship and 2015 men’s swimming & diving championship. History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, UMass for football only beginning in 2012. In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

BGSU ADMINISTRATION

dr. MAry Ellen mazey BGSU PRESIDENT FOURTH YEAR Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey became President of Bowling Green State University on July 1, 2011. Dr. Mazey’s extensive experience in Ohio public universities and with implementing strategic plans, coupled with her understanding of the role higher education has to play in the state’s well-being, led the BGSU trustees to select her as the 11th president of the University. Before becoming president of BGSU, she served from 2009-2011 as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Auburn University. In that capacity, she was responsible for the academic programming for 12 colleges and was responsible for fostering the advancement of the university’s strategic plan. From 2005-2009, Dr. Mazey was Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, where she led a college-wide implementation of the WVU 2010 Strategic Plan and served on the Council to Implement the University’s Strategic Plan.

Prior to being appointed Dean at WVU, Dr. Mazey served for seven years as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University. She was founding director of the Center for Urban and Public Affairs at Wright State and served in that capacity for 11 years. During that time, she was the university’s representative to the Ohio Board of Regents’ Urban University Advisory Committee. In addition, she served as chair of the Department of Urban Affairs and Geography and led the creation of a Master of Public Administration Program. From 1993-1996, Dr. Mazey held the title of Distinguished Professor of Professional Service at WSU. President Mazey earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from West Virginia University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in urban geography.

d. CHRISTOPHER KINGSTON DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SECOND YEAR D. Christopher Kingston was named the 13th full-time Athletics

Director at Bowling Green State University on June 9, 2013. The Falcons have had an extremely eventful first year with Kingston at the helm of the 18-team Intercollegiate Athletics program at BGSU. He has a tremendous vision and believes Falcon Athletics will continue to achieve at a high level academically, athletically and in the community. Academically, student-athletes had a strong year in the classroom for the 2013-14 academic year. Three teams achieved a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 1,000 in their multi-year APR, ten teams achieved a perfect single year APR, and all Falcon teams performed above the standard established by the NCAA. Additionally, Falcon student-athletes excelled in the classroom through their grade point averages (GPA). The fall GPA (3.18), spring GPA (3.16) and cumulative GPA (3.18) were the highest recorded scores in recent history. Out of 425 student-athletes at BGSU, 252 achieved above a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 31 of those earned a perfect 4.0. Eight teams finished their competitive seasons in the top half of their respective conference. The highlights include: the first MidAmerican Conference (MAC) football championship in over 20 years; a women’s basketball regular season MAC Championship that includes hanging a banner for the ninth straight year; hockey competing in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Final Five tournament in their inaugural season in the league; gymnastics sending three individuals to post-season NCAA competition; track and field sending five individuals to post-season NCAA competition to compete in eight events while Brooke Pleger repeated as an NCAA All-American in the hammer throw. A number of significant donations were made during the 2013-14 academic year. Bowling Green State University received its largest single gift when the late Bill Frack announced his contribution of more than $20M in support of the men’s basketball program. Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Haas made a $1 million gift to BGSU baseball, the largest single gift made by a former athlete of the program. A number of head coach accomplishments and highlights occurred during the 2013-14 academic year as well. Jennifer Roos, women’s basketball head coach, was selected as both the MAC and Region VIII Coach of the Year. Nationally, she was selected as one of seven Naismith College Coach of the Year Finalists after leading the Falcons to a 30-win season and MAC regular season championship. Kingston hired Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) coach of the year and national Coach of the Year runner-up, Dino Babers, as head coach of the football team. Coach Babers won back-to-back championships at Eastern Illinois and brings an up-tempo style of play to Doyt Perry Stadium. Additionally, Kingston hired Chris Jans to lead the men’s basketball team as the new head coach. Coach Jans most recently served as the Associate Head Coach at Wichita State University where the team won an NIT Championship in 2011 en route to a three-year run in the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by a trip to the Final Four in 2013. Prior to accepting the Athletics Director role at BGSU, Kingston

spent more than two years at North Carolina State University, first as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics before being elevated to the role of Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics. At N.C. State, Kingston was directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the football and men’s basketball programs. Additionally, he oversaw external initiatives, athletic branding and multimedia rights. He also supervised student services and media relations, and was integral in the development of the athletic department’s first leadership academy. Kingston also served as the athletics department’s liaison to the Wolfpack Club and was a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Cabinet. Prior to his time at N.C. State, Kingston spent four years as the Associate Director of Athletics for Operations and then the Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics/Director of Annual Giving for the U.S. Military Academy. His most recent position at West Point included handling the daily operations of the A-Club and directing the Army Athletic Association’s annual fund-raising campaign. He also worked with each of the department’s 25 Division I intercollegiate teams with regards to their specific fund-raising accounts. In that capacity, Kingston organized the Athletic Director’s Tailgate and the home and away football donor events. He helped integrate premium courtside and rinkside seating at basketball and hockey, respectively. With direct oversight of the ticket office, he led the transition of a multiyear agreement with Paciolan as the Athletic Association began to streamline customer service with digital ticketing. Kingston was part of the association’s external operations team, which helped to synchronize the ticket office, A-Club and marketing efforts. Other day-to-day business for Kingston included sport supervision for the golf, gymnastics, men’s soccer and rifle teams. During his time at West Point, he served as a member of the NCAA Rifle Committee. Kingston is a 2010 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and the University of Texas’s McCombs School of Business. He also attended the Division 1A Athletic Director’s Institute in 2010, a “by invitation only” gathering of the most talented intercollegiate professionals. Kingston was instrumental in several recent coaching hires at the Army Athletic Association. He planned, organized and executed searches for head football, men’s basketball, men’s soccer and men’s golf coaches. Kingston was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Corps upon graduation from the University of Central Florida in May, 1994. He retired from the U.S. Army in Sept., 2009. In addition to earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida, Kingston got his master’s degree in leadership development and educational counseling from Long Island University prior to his initial assignment to West Point. Kingston and his wife, Stephanie, a native of Whiteville, N.C., have four children: Lakin, Christopher Jr., Luke, and Mackenzie.

LESLEY iRVINE Senior Associate A.D. & Senior Women Administrator FIFTH YEAR After spending just over three years in the role of Associate Athletics Director of Sports Administration, Irvine assumed the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration and Academics in Nov. of 2013. Irvine also serves as the Senior Women Administrator in the department (SWA). Irvine joined the Bowling Green staff in July of 2010. During her time at BGSU, Irvine has had sport supervision responsibilities for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball, softball, women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming and women’s volleyball. Irvine also currently oversees the student-athlete welfare areas of sports medicine, sport performance, strength and conditioning and student-athlete academic services. In addition Irvine oversees strategic human resources initiatives in the department and serves as a key liaison for the admissions office and Dean of Students Office. Irvine also serves as the department’s Title IX coordinator and monitors and evaluates progress toward the gender equity and minority opportunities plans. She serves in this role at the institutional level as a University Deputy Title IX Coordinator. Irvine has also been instrumental in championship hosting for Bowling Green. She served as the tournament director for the immensely successful NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds hosted at the Stroh Center in 2012, as well as overseeing the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Regional co-hosted by the Huntington Center. A current member of NACDA, NACWAA and the Alliance of Women’s Coaches, Irvine represents Bowling Green on the MAC Senior Administrator committee. She has presented on hiring practices at recent NACWAA conferences and the NCAA Inclusion Forum. Irvine currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance of Women’s Coaches and chairs the sub committee for membership programming. A graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy, Irvine was also selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Committee in 2012. This will be her second stint on an NCAA committee after spending four years on the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee from 2004-08. Irvine came to Bowling Green after spending seven years as the Head Field Hockey Coach at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. Irvine had served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Stanford before being named the head coach in 2003. As the head coach, Irvine

guided Stanford to three straight NorPac Tournament Championships over her final three seasons with two NCAA tournament appearances. In 2009, she directed Stanford to its best season in program history, establishing a school record with 17 victories. Irvine was named conference Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2009. During her head coaching tenure at Stanford, Irvine mentored three under-21 National Team participants, seven regional All-Americans, seven NorPac Rookie of the Year honorees, 37 all-conference team choices, 23 allconference tournament selections and 80 NFHCA Academic All-Americans. Further evidence of Irvine’s recruiting success is Stanford’s stranglehold on the NorPac Rookie of the Year award. The 2009 season marked the seventh in a row that a Cardinal player won the award. Stanford teams excelled in the classroom under Irvine’s leadership, winning the 2003 NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award, placing second in 2004 and taking fifth in 2005. The national academic accolades have become a yearly tradition, with at least 10 players being honored by the NFHCA over the last eight consecutive seasons. Irvine arrived at Stanford after spending two years at the University of Iowa as a graduate student. Irvine was also a stand-out student-athlete herself, playing at the international level during her career. During her one year of eligibility as a graduate student at Iowa, Irvine led her team to a Final Four appearance and Big Ten Championship by pacing the team with 47 points (17 goals, 13 assists). She was named to the Final Four and Big Ten All-Tournament squads, while also earning second team all-region and regular season All-Big Ten honors. During 2000-01, Irvine worked as volunteer assistant coach with the Iowa program. A 1999 Academic All-American, Irvine received her master’s degree in athletic administration from Iowa in 2001. The England native attended Loughborough University in her home country, graduating from the school in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, sports science and recreational management. While at Loughborough, Irvine won a total of five national field hockey championships (three outdoor, two indoor) and was named to the British Universities All-Star squad. She was also selected to both the England Under-18 and Under-21 National Teams during her playing career.

2014-15 COACHES

STEPHANIE YOUNG HEAD COACH NINTH YEAR TOLEDO, ‘02, ‘03

Stephanie Young begins her ninth full season as the head coach of the Bowling Green State University women’s golf team in 2014-15, having taken over the program in the spring of 2006. She is the 10th head coach of the Falcons in the 40 years of the program. In 2009 Young was honored with the BGSU Division of Student Affairs New Outstanding Professional Award and BGSU Athletic Department’s “Roll Along” Award. She currently serves on the Mid-American Conference Executive Committee, a role she has held since 2012, and is a NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy graduate in 2011. Since joining the team midway through the 2005-06 season, Coach Young and the Falcons have made major improvements to the landscape of the team, with Young arguably becoming the greatest coach in BGSU history. During her time at BGSU, Young has guided the Falcons to a school record seven team tournament titles and nine runner-up finishes. Her teams have also featured eight individual medalists. Young has coached players to a total of 68 top-10 finishes, while her studentathletes have won 10 MAC Players of the Week honors and a MAC Sportswoman of the Year award. Under Young, the Falcons have established new school records as a team for 54, 36 and 18-hole scores, while she has also coached individuals that now own the lowest individual 54, 36 and 18-hole scores in BGSU history. The record book for individual scoring average has virtually been re-written as well under Young. Bailey Arnold set a new school record with a 77.87 scoring average in 2012-13, which is the first sub-78.00 average in BGSU history, while Lily Bartell set a new mark with her 77.13 stroke average in 2013-14. In each of the last three years, the Falcons have set a new BGSU team season scoring average record starting with a 318.57 mark in 2011-12, followed by a 311.26 stroke average in 2012-13 and most recently a new BGSU team record of 311.22 season stroke average in 2013-14. Young’s players have also achieved success in the classroom, earning 27 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Academic All-Scholar Awards and six Academic All-MAC selections. The 2006-07 BGSU team held the 11th highest grade-point average (GPA) among Division I golf programs. In that season, they also held the highest team GPA among the 18 programs at Bowling Green. Most recently in 2013-14, the women’s golf team received the award for the highest Female Team GPA among all the female sponsored sports at Bowling Green State University and was ranked 24th in the nation in team GPA among all Division I women’s golf programs according to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). The BGSU Women’s Golf team has been honored with public recognition by the NCAA for scoring in the top-10 percent of Division I programs for their sport in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) four times since Young took over in the spring of 2006. Overall, the women’s golf program has been honored five times (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2011-12 and 2012-13). In 2013-14, the Falcons finished the year with four top-five team finishes, highlighted by a team win at the Cleveland State Invitational and a second-place finish at the Rocker Classic, and turned in a team-low round of 288 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate to set the school record for the lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU women’s golf history. The 2013-14 squad also posted a new school record for the lowest single season stroke average with a 311.22 team stroke average on the year, topping the previous mark of 311.26 set in 2012-13. BGSU’s round of 306 on day two of the 2014 MAC Women’s Golf Championships marked the lowest team

score over 18-holes of play for the Falcons in its MAC Championships history. The previous low round for a BGSU squad at the conference championship event was a 307 back in 2003. The Falcons also carded a 312 in 2013 and a 315 in 2006. Individually, both Lily Bartell (Dolores Black Falcon Invitational) and Shelby Wilson (Cleveland State Invitational) each registered an individual tournament win in 2013-14, while Bartell also finished runner-up at both the Redbird Invitational and the Cleveland State Invitational. Bartell’s season stroke average of 77.13 marked the lowest season stroke average by an individual with at least 15 rounds of golf played in BGSU’s women’s golf history. Both Bartell and Wilson were each tabbed the MAC Women’s Golfer of the Week once on the year as well. Senior Bailey Arnold’s round of 68 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate set a new BGSU school record for the lowest 18-hole score in BGSU history. Senior Kelsey Benson and junior Patricia Holt were both named to the 2013-14 MAC All-Academic First-Team, while four others in Bailey Arnold, Lily Bartell, Hannah Lewis and Shelby Wilson garnered honorable mention honors. The 2012-13 season was a memorable year for the Falcons. They began the year in style with a runner-up finish at the 15-team Redbird Invitational. Their win at the Cleveland State Invitational was the team’s first in four years, but it did not take long to win another. In fact, BGSU earned another victory in their very next event, the Butler Fall Invitational. The team closed out the fall season by finishing second out of 15 teams at The Preview, which is an event headlined by MAC teams and held at the site of the MAC Championships. The Falcons continued their success in the spring, as the team won a match-play event against Ohio, 7-5, and followed that up with finishing in the top-five in each of their four events leading up to the 2013 MAC Championship Tournament. BGSU finished sixth at the MAC Championships to close out the season, which was their best finish in 10 years. The team recorded the best score in program history walking away from the tournament with a 957. Arnold set a new school record with a 77.87 scoring average, which was the first sub-78.00 average in BGSU history, while in all, six players on the 2012-13 team had perround averages in the 70’s for the year. The Falcons had five student-athletes in Lily Bartell, Hannah Lewis, Patricia Holt, Amy Ruthenberg and Shelby Wilson named as NGCA All-America Academic Scholars, tying the record for the most honorees in one season. In 2011-12 the Falcons had four top-five finishes throughout the year, with a lineup that included a pair of freshmen and a sophomore. BGSU added a pair of MAC Golfer of the Week awards, including a medalist honor by Arnold. Arnold and the Falcons added a Challenge Cup win over Ohio, BGSU’s first win in school history in the event. Kelsey Benson, Patricia Holt, Amy Ruthenberg and Shelby Wilson were all tabbed as NGCA All-America Academic Scholars. The 2010-11 season was a roller-coaster of sorts for the Falcons. The team began the season white-hot, as it set multiple team and individual scoring records at the North Texas Fall Classic and Great Smokies Intercollegiate. In Texas, BGSU shot a 54-hole record 924 (316-305-303), while Susy Grunden set team records for 18, 36 and 54 holes (69, 140, 210) on her way to a tournament title. At the Great Smokies Tournament, the Falcons shot a then school-record 294 in the first round and had a then record 36-hole mark of 609. The team also shot 617 over 36 holes at the BSU Cardinal Classic and 944 for 54 holes of the EKU Lady Colonel Classic. However, the

team was unable to manage better than a sixth-place finish in any event and placed ninth at the 2011 MAC Championships. Individually, the Falcons secured three top-five finishes outside of Grunden’s tournament win, as well as two other top10’s and five other top-20’s. Arnold recorded one of BGSU’s best season averages ever (79.90) in her debut season, carded the then second-lowest round in BGSU history (70) and finished the season with three top-20 finishes, including a seventh-place effort at Eastern Kentucky. Meanwhile, Lauren and Marisa Glew concluded long and successful Falcon careers; Lauren had the team’s second-best average and two top-20’s during the season. Both Kelsey Benson and Amy Ruthenberg were recognized as 2010-11 NGCA All-American Academic Scholars. In 2009-10 Young led the Falcons to a pair of runner-up finishes at the Youngstown State Invitational and Dayton Invitational. The team recorded a low round of 311 at the Great Smokies Invitational. Individually, Grunden won the Zippy Invitational with a score of 226 (77-73-76). Grunden’s 54-hole score was tied for third-best in school history, and her second-round 73 broke a record for the lowest score by a Falcon freshman. She was later awarded the MAC’s Golfer of the Week award for her accomplishments. While Grunden’s accomplishments highlighted the fall, she wasn’t the only Falcon to impress. Megan Gormley finished second and Hannah Lambert finished third at the YSU Invitational, while Lauren Glew finished ninth at Dayton. Again the Falcons had multiple student-athletes earn NGCA All-America Scholars recognition in Lauren Glew and Hannah Lambert. Despite graduating four seniors, the Falcons played well in the 2008-09 season with a runner-up finish at the NIU

Huskie Classic. They also had a record-breaking 298 at the GVSU Invitational, with four golfers finishing in the top-10. The Falcons then had a solid seventh-place finish at the Zippy Invitational, with two players inside the top-16. Young received the Coaches Award at the NIU Huskie Classic, voted on by the coaches of the tournament field. Team captain Lauren Glew had two top-10 performances, while Gormley had a fourth-place finish at the Falcon Invitational (81-77) and a fifth-place showing at the Huskie Classic (77-80). Megan Bader started her sophomore season off with an 88-71 at the Laker Fall Classic. The 71 was one shot short of a Falcon record. She also finished runner-up at the Huskie Classic with a score of 156 and tied for seventh at the Falcon Invitational with two rounds of 81. Academically, three players were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Team - Lauren Glew, Hannah Lambert, and Megan Gormley. In 2007-08, the Falcons established a new school record for team scoring average (323.36), besting the 2001-02 record by one shot. Also, every player on the team surpassed or matched their career low score. The team won the Falcon Invitational with seniors Jessica McCann and Carley Hrusovsky finishing as co-champions. The senior duo was named MAC Golfers of the Week following their tournament win. The Falcons placed fifth at the Laker Fall Classic (310-326) with three players in the top-20 individually and scored a 941 at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, four shots shy of the school record. Freshman Lauren Glew had a third-place finish at the Laker Fall Classic with a 151. Her final round 74 was the lowest by any Falcon freshman at the time. The Falcons had four golfers selected to the National Golf Coaches Association All Scholar Team (Lindsey Jonkhoff, Carley Hrusovsky, Lauren Glew, and Marisa Glew). Hrusovsky was also named to the Academic All-

MAC Team and awarded the NCAA Post Graduate scholarship, given to 13 female student-athletes in the country that plan to pursue a career in college athletics. In 2006-07, BGSU won the YSU-Taco Bell Invitational by ten strokes, making it the second straight season BGSU took the crown. Junior Jessica McCann took the medalist title, finishing with rounds of 73 and 74. Her score of 147 was a new career best and just two shots shy of the BGSU school record. It was also the Falcons’ first medalist crown since 2002. In the spring, the Falcons broke the 54-hole school record by shooting a team score of 937 (312-316-309), which was one better than the record set back in 1984. After hosting the team’s first Falcon Invitational at Stone Ridge Golf Club, it was off to the MAC Championships at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The squad improved on the previous year’s standing in the conference with a seventh-place finish. Senior Kari Liggett posted an 11th-place finish for the top-Falcon performance in a MAC Championship since 2004, as well as the fifth-best performance by a Falcon since the beginning of the MAC Championships in 1999. Liggett was also honored as the MAC Sportswoman of the Year, the first Falcon to earn this award, which is voted on solely by the players. The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) named BGSU juniors Carley Hrusovsky and Lindsey Jonkhoff to the prestigious All-Scholar Team and ranked the BGSU women’s golf team 11th best in the country for team GPA. That same 3.64 GPA helped the team win the BGSU Student-Athlete Services “Highest Team GPA Award”. All seven squad members maintained at least a 3.24 GPA, earning the NCAA Public Recognition Award for multiyear academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. During the 2005-06 season, in just their second tournament with Young at the helm, the Falcons captured the St. George Invitational by seven shots with three BGSU players finishing in the top-seven. One tournament later, sophomore Jessica McCann was named Mid-American Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week after shooting a career-best 152 (77-75) at the Illini Spring Classic. McCann was the first Falcon to garner the honor in nearly five years. BGSU and Young hosted the MAC Championships, played at Walden Ponds in Indian Springs, Ohio. The Falcons were the lone team to improve all four rounds of the event (325-322-317-315) and Young coached all five of her players to establish personal-bests in the MAC Championships. Sophomore Carley Hrusovsky was named to the Academic All-MAC Team; a honor that had not been awarded to a Falcon in three seasons. Though Hrusovsky was the lone Falcon to be named to the Academic All-MAC team, all six members of the women’s golf program carried at least a 3.25 GPA. Prior to BGSU, Young was an assistant golf professional at Sylvania Country Club for three years. During that time, she served as an assistant coach for the St. Ursula Academy’s varsity golf team, where the team made two State Championship Tournament appearances. In addition, she served as an USGA intern for the Toledo District Golf Association, worked for the Toledo Junior Golf Association, and worked under head teaching professional James P. McGurk, who has been named the #1 instructor in Ohio by Golf Magazine. Young earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in 2002 (Business Management) and her MBA in 2003 from the University of Toledo. She was also a four-year letterwinner and captain of the UT Women’s Golf team from 1998-2002. Young helped her team win eight team titles and in 2000 she was the individual champion at the Bowling Green State Invitational.

AMY RUTHENBERG ASSISTANT COACH SECOND YEAR BGSU, ‘13

Amy Ruthenberg will begin her second year as

assistant coach for the Bowling Green State University women’s golf program having joined head coach Stephanie Young’s coaching staff in 2013-14. Ruthenberg will assist with all aspects of the day-today operations of the golf team. “I am thrilled to add Coach Ruthenberg to the coaching staff. She will be a tremendous asset, not only to our golf program, but to the university community as well. Amy has achieved at the highest levels both athletically and academically,” Young said. “Her talent, knowledge and passion for the game and BGSU Women’s Golf has already had an impact on everyone. She is going to be an amazing coach and it’s a privilege to be part of watching her develop and grow.” In 2013-14, Ruthenberg’s first year as a coach at BGSU, the Falcons finished the year with four top-five team finishes, highlighted by a team win at the Cleveland State Invitational and a second-place finish at the Rocker Classic, and turned in a team-low round of 288 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate to set the school record for the lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU women’s golf history. The 2013-14 squad also posted a new school record for the lowest single season stroke average with a 311.22 team stroke average on the year, topping the previous mark of 311.26 set in 2012-13. BGSU’s round of 306 on day two of the 2014 MAC Women’s Golf Championships marked the lowest team score over 18-holes of play for the Falcons in its MAC Championships history.

Ruthenberg, who is from Okemos, Michigan, is currently attending graduate school at BGSU and studying Kinesiology. She received her undergraduate degree in biology at Bowling Green in 2013. Ruthenberg is no stranger to the BGSU women’s program, playing for the Falcons for four years (2009-2013). During her time, Ruthenberg was a two-time Team Captain (201112, 2012-13), a three-time NGCA All-America Scholar (2010-2013), and a four-time MAC Honor Roll member. Ruthenberg also finished her playing career ranked fifth in BGSU history for the lowest single season scoring average (78.55) and also finished fifth in career scoring average (81.54). In her senior year, Ruthenberg had four individual top-ten finishes and was selected to the Academic All-MAC Team. Her father, Steve Ruthenberg, introduced her to golf and works for the Forest Akers Golf Courses at Michigan State University, and her mother Karen Ruthenberg has been very supportive of her decisions. Ruthenberg was also a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society at BGSU.

LETTERWINNERS

BOLD - Still active

IN THE BEGINNING ... The following is an excerpt from the book “Forward Falcons”, written by Janet Parks, Ann Bowers and Addie Hostetler Muti. “Forward Falcons” provides a detailed history of women’s sports at Bowling Green State University. This excerpt covers the history of the golf program from the 1940s through the early 1970s. On the pages that follow, one can find complete team results beginning with 1974 and individual results beginning with 1976, along with photos of individual tournament medalists spanning the last four decades. -------------------------------------------------------- Across many years, a unique feature of the BGSU women’s golf program was the rapport that existed between professional golfers and the University physical education faculty, who arranged for the pros to come to BG to engage in a variety of activities. The earliest recorded visit occurred in May 1947, when Betty Hicks, winner of nine major tournaments and vice president of the Women’s Professional Golf Association (WPGA), came to campus. During her five-day stay, Hicks conducted a demonstration for a group representing the Athletic Federation of Ohio

College Women, taught several golf classes, and spoke to women physical education majors. Hicks’ career advice foreshadowed the sport management academic program that would emerge more than 30 years later, as she remarked on “the many opportunities for talented women in the professional golfing field due to the great need at this time for capable people to do promotional work” (BG News, May 7, 1947, p. 3). Four years later, Marilynn Smith, a co-founder of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), came to BG to conduct a clinic at the University golf course. While on campus, she played an exhibition match with Shirley Spork, a BGSU physical education instructor and also a co-founder of the LPGA (BG News, May 18, 1951, p. 3). In 1965 and 1966, the women’s physical education department, in cooperation with the LPGA, sponsored National Golf Schools. Shirley Spork and Penny Boussoulas, physical education instructor and coach of the BGSU golf team, were co-chairs of the Schools. Eight years later, Spork returned to BG, where she conducted a golf clinic and hit the symbolic “first ball” in the inaugural event of Grand Opening Week of the back nine holes of the University Golf Course (BG News, June 20, 1974, p. 8). Bowling Green students also have a long history of enjoying golf. As early as 1930, golf was included among the sports sponsored by the WAA. It proved to be quite popular, and in 1936 BGSU golfers competed against teams from Toledo and Heidelberg in a Sports Day held at the University of Toledo (BG News, May 13, 1936). Early in 1941, Jean Drake Hendrickson organized BG’s first women’s golf club with the purpose of fostering “interest and enjoyment in golf among the women students of the campus.” The club was open to women who either had had nine weeks of golf instruction or could pass the “efficiency” test (BG News, Feb. 26, 1941). In 1957, BG sent a foursome to the Ohio Intercollegiate Golf Tourney at Ohio State (Key, 1957). Two years later, Agnes Hooley, the club’s sponsor, brought more structure to the group, announcing that the golf club would meet “at 3:30 every Tuesday, regardless

of weather conditions” (BG News, Oct. 6, p. 3). The same year, in a WIA-sponsored Sports Day with Eastern Michigan, Wooster, and Oberlin, BG golfers captured the top three places (BG News, Nov. 10, 1959). In a 1961 tri-match on the Scarlet course in Columbus, a BG foursome prevailed over teams from Ohio State and Ohio University (BG News, May 12, 1961). During the late 1960s, the Falcon golf team matched up well against teams representing schools such as Ohio State, Kent State, and Michigan State. They also turned in fine performances in the annual Midwest tournament, the precursor to the MAIAW. These accomplishments occurred with few resources. In May of 1988, coach Dolores Black remembered how the team obtained enough shag balls to finish the season: “We played Central Michigan, and a little stream went through the course. On one hole, almost every ball would go in the stream and we retrieved many of them.” Noel Jablonski (1967-1971), recalled what being on the golf team meant to her in those days: “I have many wonderful memories about the BG golf team….It was great fun to pile four or five of us and all of our gear into Ms. Black’s big ol’ car to drive

across the Midwest to compete in Illinois and Indiana. We stayed in motels, ate in restaurants, and developed friendships with players from other schools. We had to manage our schoolwork and time, cooperate with one another, and encourage each other. We were on the course in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1970, when the Kent State uprisings were closing universities in Ohio. I remember the golfers from Ohio University trying to decide if they could finish the tournament because they had received word that their school had shut down. Every competitor helped to deal with the situation” (May, 2005). By the 1970s, Black’s team had become very competitive with teams from across the Midwest. In 1972, BG won the team championship at the Ohio Invitational Tournament, with Falcon Sue Barkhurst winning medalist honors (BG News, May 17, 1972). To top off the victory, Carolyn Treece carded a dramatic hole-in-one! The BG golfers repeated the state title in 1973, and Jill Wilhelm played in the AIAW national tournament at the University of Georgia. The Falcons were state runners-up to the Buckeyes in the 1974 Ohio Invitational, which was held in conjunction with the Falcon Women’s Invitational (BG News, May 22, 1974).
