JUNIOR LEAGUE’S FIRST E-CYCLING DAY A SUCCESS! By Libby Sexton This spring, the JLB hosted the TechBirmingham Ecycling Day in conjunction with Bargain Carousel, collecting enough old electronic equipment in just one day to fill three 60-foot-long trailers. In today’s high tech society, people are constantly replacing electronic equipment and loading landfills with potentially hazardous waste. The JLB’s Technology Task Force saw an opportunity to help the community by diverting items destined for landfills to a recyling company.

be reused. The students ‘cleaned’ the hard drives and restored them to working order. Good As New This extra step provided the Junior League with at least 10 'good as new' hard drives to donate to partner agencies. The YWCA received six hard drives to update their computer lab, as well as one full computer, complete with speakers and a relatively new screen. The Junior League also collected 30 complete computer systems to donate to McWane Center’s Math Bee.

Cell Phones, Too The League collected much more than just computers and related items. Almost 500 used cell phones were donated to the But rather then just melting down Verizon Wireless Hopeline to be recycled. LEADERSHIP NOTES From the President All Aboard! My son, Will, is two. Like many children in Jefferson County, he received a copy of “The Little Engine That Could” in January of 2007, when the first Junior League of Birmingham All Aboard! Read With Me! Imagination Library books arrived in mailboxes around Birmingham. While the book was a bit advanced for the then ten-month-old Will, it is a terrific start to a sixty book library of age appropriate books provided by the JLB (like many of you, I fund my child’s participation in the program). The JLB hopes that the Imagination Library program will foster a lifetime love of reading among children county-wide who may not otherwise have access to age appropriate books in their homes. I have always loved “The Little Engine” and I’m thrilled that, in recent months, it has become one of my son’s favorite books. For Will, who loves trains more than just

about anything, the little engine and her friends are compelling enough to make the book worth reading every night- at least once. Like many of you, as a mom, I’m drawn to the message that we must try to do the things we think we cannot do, and I am always happy when my son asks to hear the tale of one little train who is both a good Samaritan and a good example. One night, while reading “The Little Engine”, for at least the second time in a row, it occurred to me that the story of our locomotive heroine is the tale of the JLB. When an engine pulling a train carrying toys and healthy food for children breaks down, three other engines are asked for help and refuse. Enter our heroine, a little blue engine who offers her assistance without even being asked. While she acknowledges her fear, that she is too small to pull the train, she readily accepts the challenge and, climbing a mountain, she encourages herself saying “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can”. Likewise, for almost 87

3 years, your Junior League has been on the forefront of community assistance without even being asked. We readily offer our help, even when it seems like it will take climbing a mountain to succeed. The JLB cannot do all that it does unless you answer the call to help. I am humbled and honored by the opportunity to represent you and serve you this year, and I am so appreciative of your commitment to our great organization and to our community. 2008-09 is going to be a terrific year-- I think we can, I think we can, I think we can! I hope you’ll get on board for an exciting ride! Thank you in advance for all the work you will accomplish this year for our community through the Junior League of Birmingham. We’re off to a great start this year and I look forward to working with you! - Shannon Lisenby 2008-2009 President

Board Briefs Leaving the Station The 2008-09 Executive Board, with the benefit of outside trainers who are all focused on positioning Leagues for success in the years to come, has been studying our organization and looking for ways to make it more efficient and effective. Guided by the new Strategic Plan (see page 8), we’ve developed goals for the JLB this year. We’re working on an annual plan for the year to ensure we stay on track and moving in the right direction. Above all else, we want to make sure that every member’s experience is meaningful. We want you to learn from and enjoy your JLB experience and we want you to see how your efforts are improving our community. Your Executive Board is here to serve you and we want to hear from you. Please let us know when you’ve had a great experience, and especially when there is room for improvement. , Down the Line We think you are going to see a lot of exciting changes this year. We’re moving

to issue-based presentations at General Membership Meetings and we’re planning to spend each month focusing on a different issue within our six impact areas (look for more information on that in September’s Between the Lines). We’re also building on great successes in member trainings. You’ve probably noticed that we’re launching a redesigned Between the Lines. The fundraiser chairs have some great plans for events this year and we have a terrific new kick-off for Shop, Save & Share that you’ll learn more about next month. We are working hard this summer to cement relationships with the agencies we serve and we make bigger impacts in the community. We also have new community projects that

range from helping homeless women to a reading program for women who have been recently released from prison. The JLB currently has over 7,000 children enrolled in its signature project, the All Aboard! Read With Me! Imagination Library and we plan to increase enrollment and create a sustainable plan for the future of the project.

Bloom Where You Are Planted Elizabeth Glennon has done an outstanding job serving as a volunteer for “Every Moment Matters”. Her friendly disposition and outgoing personality are a perfect match for her volunteer role at UAB’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. She makes a real effort to interact with the children and engage them in fun activities that leave them smiling when they go to the exam rooms. If there is

a need to restock the supply cabinet or a computer game is not working, Elizabeth contacts the chairperson to resolve the problem. Elizabeth, thank you for making a difference in the lives of the children at the clinic! When Romney Velazquez started a new job, she quickly contacted the chairperson of “Every Moment Matters” to develop a plan to complete her volunteer hours within the parameters of her new work schedule. Needing to volunteer in the evening and on weekends, she eagerly

took on the responsibility of managing the Junior League supply cabinet that holds all the crafts, books, art supplies, and games that are used by the volunteers to interact with the children at UAB’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. She restocked supplies and organized shelves so items could be easily located Thank You, Romney!

FUND DEVELOPMENT

A Common Thread THE GENERATIONS FUND

Two remarkable women, Nell Koopman and Kim Rogers, share a common thread: they each support the Generations Fund and the future needs of our Junior League. Both have served the community by working with children and serving as Fundraising chairs for the JLB. Both have left their footprints for generations to come by designating the JLB as a beneficiary in their wills. Nell, an active member, joined the JLB in 2001. She is married to Ben and has four children: Margaret, Will, Sara Frances and Mack. When asked why she designated the Junior League in her will, she responded: “I felt it was a way to show my family a commitment to the League and the community with hopes that they will continue to support the JLB when I am gone, whether it be financially or through volunteering their time. Kim, a sustainer, joined the JLB in 1985. She is married to Bruce and has two children, Sarah and Matthew. Kim says, “My daughter, Sarah, used to tag along with me when I worked on the Children Can Soar project when she was little. Today, I’d like to think that it rubbed off on her a little,

because she is a Public Policy major with a concentration in health care at Vanderbilt.” Kim made a leadership pledge to the Endowment Campaign and has been an active supporter of the President’s Society. She adds: “An endowment fund is a great way to provide a reliable, sustainable funding source for the community projects of the JLB. It is so important to have a diversity of funding sources, and the JLB, like most organizations, has traditionally been dependent on fundraising events. By using the income from the principal, we can ensure that funds will be there for the ‘generations to come.’ I’m grateful that I can have a small part in funding those future projects and needs of the League, long after I’m gone.” Nell and Kim, as an Active and a Sustainer, recognize the importance of the Junior League’s mission, now and for the generations to come. THE MARKET is Going GREEN!

In order to do our part to keep Alabama’s environment beautiful, The Market 2008’s correspondence will be relayed digitally to our members and merchants. 1.

Next year, our merchants will have the opportunity to manage everything online - without the worries of paperwork - enabling the League to save some “green” as well.

2.

Last year, The Market committee made the decision to do a postcard mailer instead of heavy invitations with envelopes and inserts, and the response was amazing! This year, we are also eliminating yard signs from the marketing scheme.

3.

So what does this mean for League members? Grassroots communication is key! We need your help in spreading the word about The Market 2008 by mouth! Please go ahead and put the dates for The Market 2008 on your calendar.

4.

Do not forget to redeem your ticket credit online and help us spread the word to your family, friends and work colleagues!
