MASTER PLAN

PROJECT BRIEF The Valley Link is a commerce based green corridor in Springfield’s Metro Center. The intent is to increase adjacent business exposure by drawing foot traffic from the newly constructed Union Station to the Mass Mutual Arena. By establishing a gateway by Union Station, people will be drawn into the corridor, where they will then be guided along by cohesive plantings, lighting, and public art installations Throughout the system measures will be implemented in a phased manner to generate a gradual renovation of the area. We hope that by starting with low impact interventions we can avoid any displacement of residents and assist the existing community by allowing them to provide feedback as the proposal progresses.

CONCEPT Market Street is a successful existing pedestrian corridor that utilizes simple design elements to create an enjoyable shopping experience. We saw this as the perfect precedent to our project We applied the Market Street concept to multiple areas that were less appealing and then connected these spaces, along with new and existing green spaces, with a primary circulation network. SECTIONS

Market Street and the new Mass Mutual Strip will work in tandem as commercial corridors, taking advantage of the foot traffic coming to and from the arena. The area will include a parking garage with first floor commercial use, new shaded seating areas, basketball courts, and a parking lot. Sandwiched between a new mixed-use commercial building and the existing TD Bank building will be the largest addition to the park system. The TD Bank Plaza will provide open and shaded green space for both active and passive uses, as well as a new adventure playground that utilizes landform as a play structure. Adjacent to the park will be a sculpture garden for local artists to display their works.

MASTER PLAN PROJECT BRIEF: The Floren Residence is a large private estate located on Cape Cod. It is made up of 5 separate parcels of land that were combined into one. We aligned the fire pit, main living room, and swimming pool with the most critical view axis to the shoreline. This vista is brought back through the landscape and emphasized due to prominence in relation to the landscape’s organization. The guest house was placed on the other end of the property to take advantage of another beautiful view of the shoreline and provide a sense of privacy for guests and the clients. The rest of the landscape is engulfed in a billowing meadow that creates a sea of its own surrounding the estate.

CONCEPT: The natural landscape of Cape Cod emanates its own rhythm in multiple dimensions. We used this rhythm as a theme within our own landscape, as well as the layout of the architecture, to establish the estate as part of the Cape, not just an addition to it.

The entry sequence is defined by classic Cape Cod rose bushes, a 2 way garage, and a trellis intertwined with grape vines. The master bedroom looks out to a private garden and over a rain garden abutting the pool that collects and manages all of the runoff water for the site. To the front of the house, grassy terraces defined by granite steps lead out to the fire pit. To the North of the site, a vegetable garden with a trellis system overhead lead out to the guest house.

SECTION Soft lighting is built into the granite steps on the lawn terrace. A large window collects sunlight for the main living room and carries the vista through the house and out back towards the pool. Perennial gardens abut the corners of the house and bring the landscape much closer. This section displays how the architecture was strategically placed at a higher elevation to take advantage of the view as well as act as the barrier between the semi-public and private sides of the estate. In the back, the infinity edge pool carries off into meadow, while to the front, the terraced lawn falls down towards the fire-pit which is tucked into a retaining wall, all within the same viewshed.

PROJECT BRIEF The Jones Library located in the center of Amherst, MA, is a historical landmark for the residents of the town. The curators of the library proposed an expansion of the building and renovation of the existing gardens. The goal of the project is to create a landscape that unifies the Jones Library and the Amherst History Museum to the West We established a sequence of private, semi-private, and public spaces that promote passive and active uses, as well as a series of rain gardens for water collection and filtration.

This early design render provided insight into what plantings were effective in what areas. It also allowed us to refine the flow of the circulation and accessibility of the site. Major differences can be seen on the raised lawn, rain gardens, and rear lawn.

The Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community, completed in 2013, is one of the newest additions- to the UMass Amherst Campus. oshua Lemieux LA297C - 3/5/19 Scale: 1” = 10’

The goal of the project was to create a semi-private space with a variety of subspaces to accommodate both the residents and the outside foot traffic. I took advantage of a great view of the mountains by utilizing the steep slope on the site as a viewing platform. The plantings aim to reflect the quilt-like farming landscape of western MA.

This particular corridor is a high traffic area. It was essential that we maintained a sense of privacy for the people who lived in the adjacent buildings, but also created an attractive landscape for all UMass students and faculty.

SECTIONS

The vegetation creates separation between the spaces and provides privacy for the people within. The view-port can be admired the most from the terraced seating area. Retaining walls create seating along the slope and a group of plantings at the top establishes a barrier from the corridor.
