Welcome from the President
Tiffany Rubenkoenig
One Woman. One League. One Community. Welcome to the 2016 Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market! We hope you share in the excitement of the Junior League of Fort Worth as we celebrate our 10th anniversary of this fundraising event. For the past year, every detail of the Market has been reviewed with the goal of honoring this special milestone and continuing to bring you an exciting Market experience to fundraise for our community. This year marks the 87th year that the Junior League of Fort Worth continues to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve communities through the effective action and leadership of training volunteers. We’ll serve a total of 50,000 volunteer hours and work with more than 50 community agencies to make positive and measurable impacts in the City of Fort Worth.
For the 2016-2017 year we are proudly funding 10 community projects. Our signature project benefits the women and children of Presbyterian Night Shelter (PNS) through a capital contribution to the new Morris Foundation Women & Children’s Center that is now open and housing 40 women and 120 children. Our volunteers will assist with the Women’s Empowerment Program by providing life skills and personal fulfillment classes throughout the year. We are constantly striving to make an impact in the women’s lives at PNS as well as with those we encounter through our many agency partners. Please see additional details on those agencies within this publication. I want to give special thanks to Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market Co-Chairs Adi Borovick and Jessica Busby for their attention to detail, constant planning and hundreds of hours committed to this event. You’ve done an amazing job and I hope you’re able to truly enjoy your work throughout the Market. I also want to thank Sustaining Advisors Paige Pate and Sandra Tuomey for kicking this off 10 years ago. It’s been a blessing to have you involved as we celebrate this milestone and the impact our fundraising dollars have had in our community since this all began. In celebrating 10 years we honor Nancy Cychol, President of Cook Children’s Medical Center. We cherish our partnership with Cook Children's, where we’ve been volunteering for 30 years. We currently have 36 women placed as general Cook volunteers and as hostesses within the Ronald McDonald room at the Medical Center. We have also provided volunteers through the dental initiative community outreach program. And in 2014 we kicked off our Pancake Breakfast event for the patients at Cook Children's. This event continues to grow with more than 400 attendees this past spring, and we look forward to celebrating in 2017 with Pancakes in your Pajamas on Saturday, April 8. I want to thank each woman who is a part of this year’s committee for your tireless work, to Nancy Cychol for your vision in the power of Cook Children’s, and to all of those that have supported us this year through your in-kind donations, sponsorship and buying the ticket to come shop. We thank you and hope you enjoy the event! With sincerest gratitude,
2016-2017 JLFW President

Christmas in Cowtown Honorary Chair
Nancy Cychol
The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) is honored to recognize Nancy Cychol, President of Cook Children’s Medical Center, as our Honorary Chair of the 10th Anniversary of the Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market. She joined Cook Children’s Medical Center in 1984, and was promoted to President in 2003 where she oversees operations of the 430 bed medical center and is responsible for more than 3,400 employees across 30 specialties and sub specialties. She directs a highly-skilled staff of nurses, technologists, therapists, child life specialists, chaplains, teachers, social workers, translators, and more than 370 physicians and dentists.
The Junior League of Fort Worth’s relationship with Cook Children’s has spanned 30 years, and our volunteers have assisted in a variety of roles: as general volunteers at the Hospital, working in the Ronald McDonald House Family Room, Parent’s Night Out, Poison Education and Art Therapy programs. For the past three years, Cook Children's has hosted the Junior League's Provisional Class annual Pancake Picnic, a morning of fun and breakfast for the patients of the medical center and the children of the community. Cook Children’s has also been a generous sponsor of Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market’s special events for many years. Nancy is a strong leader and epitomizes the Mission of the Junior League. Under her leadership, Cook Children’s has become the home of a designated Level II pediatric trauma center, a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit, and one of the largest pediatric transport programs in the country. JLFW Past President Sandra Tuomey recalls, “I met Nancy Cychol in 2008 and immediately became a fan! From her strong and effective leadership skills to her sense of humor and personal regard for each individual, I learned and continue to learn a great deal from Nancy. It has been a true privilege to partner with her throughout the years and grow our reach into the community.” Nancy’s career has been dedicated to children. Her motivation is simple but powerful, saying, "I believe every life of every child is sacred.” She serves on several boards, including the American Heart Association, the DallasFort Worth Hospital Council, Cook Children’s Northeast Hospital in Hurst, the Cook Children’s Surgery Center in Plano, and LifeGift. Nancy and her husband, John, have two sons. Her son Ryan, 27, reflects, “My mother is the hardest working person I know. She taught me the value of hard work and dedication. She makes me want to be better every day.” Adds Nicholas, “She is such an amazing mother and woman. From the way she has raised me and my older brother, to the way that she helps the sick kids at the hospital. Her heart is in it for children and that is what shows.” Pam Foster, her friend and colleague, speaks fondly of Nancy, saying, “She is a powerful woman covered in an immense sense of humor.” Please join us as we honor Nancy and recognize her leadership, her relationship with the Junior League of Fort Worth, and her commitment to the Fort Worth community.

Christmas in Cowtown Co-Chairs Adi Borovick and Jessica Busby As we open the doors for the 10th Anniversary of the Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market, we are honored, proud and giddy with excitement to welcome you this week. We can’t believe it’s FINALLY here! Building this Market is no small feat. Through a committee of 80 dedicated women along with more than 2,000 volunteer hours from the women of the Junior League of Fort Worth, we are looking forward to showcasing the 200 merchants we carefully selected to kick off your holiday season! We are honored and humbled to have Nancy Cychol, President of Cook Children’s Medical Center as our Honorary Chair. She is dedicated to providing premiere medical care to the children in the community, which is a value she shares with the Junior League of Fort Worth. As we prepared for this Market, we reflected on the past 10 years and the history of Christmas in Cowtown. We fell in love with the Market right from the start, whether it was shopping (a lot of shopping), volunteering, or serving on various committees, we have been involved since the first year. With that in mind, and wanting to stay connected to the history of the Market, we were thrilled to ask Paige Pate and Sandra Tuomey to be our Sustaining Advisors. Who better to guide us along the way than the two leaders who chaired the very first Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market? We learned so much, not only from their experience as former CoChairs with deep ties to the Market and the community, but also as past presidents of the Junior League. They are thoughtful, insightful and giving, and love Christmas in Cowtown more than you can imagine! Photo courtesy of Gittings Photography
We sincerely hope you enjoy your experience at the 10th Anniversary of Christmas in Cowtown as much as our entire committee has loved preparing to welcome you. Of our 200 merchants, we selected more than 85 new merchants for you to “Shop for a Cause and Support the Fort!” In addition to the wonderful shopping, we will have live music every evening from 5 – 8 p.m. On Saturday, we hope you will enjoy youth choirs from the DFW Area as we bring more than 250 students to perform for you. For the first time in Market history, join us on Sunday! We will be open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and will have many activities happening throughout the day. Local authors and members of the Texas Ballet Theater will be here to sign books and greet you and your family. We are also excited to welcome Ron Hall, author of "Same Kind of Different as Me" who will be signing autographs from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Please stop by the Junior League booth to learn more about the Junior League of Fort Worth, our vision and mission, and the beneficiaries the Junior League will support in our 2016-2017 year. We also hope you will purchase our 10th Anniversary Radko ornament for your tree. We are so thankful to our many sponsors, our merchants, and those who have put so much time into preparing for this week. We also want to thank the members of the Fort Worth Police Department who protect and serve the city of Fort Worth, including during our week at the Market. We are especially grateful to our committee and the Junior League Board, the hardest working women in Fort Worth, who are giving of their time, energy, and new ideas to make this 10th anniversary a special year. This Market does not happen without the collaboration of all of us. We also want to thank our families for their love, support and patience throughout the past year. We cannot wait to enjoy this week with you! Lastly, we wish each of you the very best holiday season filled with love, memories and tradition. Cheers!

Ten Years of Christmas in Cowtown Dear Christmas in Cowtown Friends, What an honor to serve as the Sustaining Advisors to the 2016 Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market! It has been our pleasure to serve in this role, and it is hard to believe that it has been ten years since we had the great honor of serving as Co-Chairs for the inaugural gift Market in 2007. Ten years ago, we gathered around a table with an original Steering Committee comprised of eight Junior League women. We were charged with planning the very first Christmas in Cowtown and, in fact, the first new fundraiser for the Junior League of Fort Worth in more than 35 years. There was much work to be done: research to perform, budgets to create, sponsorships to secure, merchants to recruit, decorations and parties to plan and the list goes on and on.
We are forever grateful to the first Christmas in Cowtown committee who did all of that and more, setting the stage for an incredible new Junior League of Fort Worth tradition. But, perhaps what we remember and appreciate most is the way that group - and all Christmas in Cowtown committees who followed - remained focused on the good that the Junior League can do for our community with proceeds generated by this highly successful, fundraising event. During the first year, we encouraged our community to “Shop for a Cause and the people of Fort Worth certainly responded! Since that time, nearly $2.5 million of net proceeds have been generated to support the wonderful Mission of the Junior League of Fort Worth and our community projects. Please take a moment to read the full list of beneficiaries to understand the importance of these funds to our non-profit partners in recent years. We have watched with pride as this event has grown over the years and become a favorite holiday shopping tradition. From 125 merchants in the beginning to now more than 200; from 6,000 shoppers to more than 13,000; from three shopping days to four; and from $200,000 in net annual revenue to now more than $500,000 raised annually, the last 10 Markets have shown the growth of Christmas in Cowtown and the wide support from the Fort Worth community. As you shop the Market this year, please know that YOU are giving back to the community through the Junior League of Fort Worth. Thank you for supporting the Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market and congratulations to the Junior League of Fort Worth volunteers for doing what you do best: providing highly trained volunteers to make an impact in the great city of Fort Worth. Presbyterian Night Shelter Campaign for Women and Children Since 2000, the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW) has partnered with the Presbyterian Night Shelter to provide both volunteer and monetary support to the aid in their mission of ending homelessness in Tarrant County. As the JLFW signature project for the 2016-2017 year, the shelter received $100,000 to help fund their brand new Morris Foundation Women and Children’s Center. The 30,000 square foot center, which opened in June of this year, can house up to 40 women and 120 children and is adjacent to the main shelter building. In addition, JLFW volunteers collaborated with PNS staff to create the Women’s Empowerment Program. The program consists of monthly sessions focusing on life skills classes such as cooking, social skills, work ethics, customer service as well as personal fulfillment options such as journaling, yoga, gardening and other stress reducers. The ultimate goal of the Women’s Empowerment Program is to ensure the women are prepared to exit homelessness with the skills necessary to maintain a permanent housing situation. “Despite being homeless which results in them often being marginalized or overlooked by society, they still have the same hopes and desires as the rest of us,” said Christy Livingstone, JLFW member and the PNS Project Development Chair. JLFW members will facilitate classes on relationships, stress management, parenting skills/ child development, healthy lifestyle, and basic housekeeping skills. Says Betsy Beaman, PNS Resource Development Manager, about the JLFW, “Each member is committed to changing the lives of individuals in Fort Worth and eager to make a difference their community. JLFW members are kind, caring, and committed and we could not guide individuals from homelessness to home without them.”

Junior League of Fort Worth Presbyterian Night Shelter: Campaign for Women and Children - $100,000 Presbyterian Night Shelter recently completed construction on a new building for homeless women and their children. The building can house 40 mothers and 120 children in dorm-style rooms. Junior League volunteers assist with a Women’s Empowerment Program, which provides classes focusing on a variety of life skills as well as personal fulfillment opportunities – example topics include budgeting, yoga and journaling.
ACH Child and Family Services: ACH Life Skills Programs - $20,000 The ACH LIFE (Learning Independence from Experience) program targets young adults (ages 18-23) who have aged out of foster care and have previously been wards of the state due to abuse or neglect. This population has a high incidence of homelessness and drug and alcohol abuse when no assistance is offered after age 18. The program is designed to help these young adults transition to independent living successfully. The project funds a mentor/life skills program to be presented to the female residents by Junior League volunteers.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth: Music Clubhouse -$50,000 The second music clubhouse of its kind in Fort Worth (the first was opened to rave reviews in Northside Branch in 2015), the clubhouse provides a safe place for youth (ages 10-18) to have access to instruments and free music lessons. The clubhouse not only gets at-risk kids off of the streets after school, it provides a venue where the youth receive many emotional benefits as they learn to play an instrument in a band with their peers in a safe environment. Volunteers will assist with music lessons and performances at the Eastside Branch.
Catholic Charities of Fort Worth: Assessment Center Recreational Activities and Outings - $5,000 The Assessment Center serves our community’s most needy children – often severely abused or neglected children who have been removed from their homes. Junior League volunteers take children to recreational outings outside of the Center (e.g., TCU basketball game, spending a day at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, etc.). The funding allows CCFW to plan quality, engaging activities and outings for the children that expose them to the fun, cultural attractions in our community.
Daniel Migael Foundation: Better Vision, Better Hope - $10,000 The foundation provides free vision care and glasses to homeless, indigent and uninsured adults throughout the Metroplex. This project brings bi-monthly Saturday clinics to the Como area in connection with ODWIN. Each clinic serves 20-25 new patients. Junior League volunteers greet and register patients for the clinics and assist in eyeglass frame selections.

2016-2017 Community Projects Fortress Youth Development Center: Outdoor Learning Stations and Beautification for Early Learning Center - $16,500 Fortress Youth Development Center serves the near Southeast community of Fort Worth. Many children in this area come from low-income families where caregivers are predominantly below poverty level and private preschool is not a viable option. Fortress YDC is currently operating a part-time preschool called the Fortress Early Learning Center. The preschool (which serves children 18 months to 4 years) opened full time in September 2016 and doubled in size (going from 22 to 45 children). The project funds the preschool’s outdoor beautification and learning stations. Volunteers assist in building, painting, and installation of the outdoor learning stations.
Friends of Forest Hill Public Library: Level Up! Forest Hill Literacy and the Arts - $40,000 Most Forest Hill residents attend FWISD schools that feed into Dunbar High School. The dropout rate in Forest Hill is almost 35% compared with the national average of 15%. More than 52% of the population lives below the federal poverty level. The program assesses each individual and develops an individualized program to help that person become literate. The program is aimed at all ages—school aged children to adults. The investment enabled the library to purchase the software and hardware, as well as provide training necessary to utilize Reading Plus for 25 laptops. Volunteers mentor the participants by supporting them during the tutorials and leading enrichment activities.
The Cliburn: Van Cliburn International Piano Competition - $35,000 The Cliburn is offering a variety of community projects in combination with the 15th edition of the competition to be held from May 25-June 10, 2017. Junior League was instrumental in the creation of The Cliburn and has assisted with the competition since its inception. Junior League funds will be used to underwrite the Adopt-A-Competitor program, which provides various FWISD elementary schools with curriculum and materials to allow school children to learn about certain competitors and their home countries. Those competitors will then perform for the children at their school. The Cliburn will also organize and host free community performances by Cliburn competitors. In addition, the Cliburn will host a competition among FWISD students to design Cliburn banners that will be displayed around town. Two volunteers will help with these community-based programs, and the remaining volunteers will work in the festival gift shop, which serves thousands of Fort Worth visitors from across the world.
Union Gospel Mission: Children’s Enrichment Program - $63,500 With the opening of the new Scott Walker Women and Families Building in late 2015, Union Gospel Mission will double its population of children. Junior League’s funds were used to purchase a new 25-passenger bus for transporting these additional children with supplemental funding to provide uniforms, enrichment activities and bus maintenance. Junior League volunteers provide tutoring to children during the academic school year.

Becoming a Junior League of Fort Worth Community Project
Becoming a Junior League of Fort Worth Member
The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) strives to improve and positively impact the well being of children and families in our community by providing a legacy of trained volunteers. JLFW also provides funding to several agencies each year. Our Project Research and Development committee reviews applications submitted by various community organizations and selects those who will receive project status, which means the JLFW will contribute both volunteers and monetary support.
Do you have an interest in voluntarism? Are you committed to improving the community? Do you want to develop your own potential? If so, we want you to join us! Each year the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW) trains new members (Provisionals) to be effective volunteers and leaders in our community. Provisionals complete a year-long training, learning and experiencing the League structure, programs and participating in community service. JLFW is open to women who possess an interest in voluntarism, a commitment to community service, and a desire to reach their potential for voluntary community participation. JLFW reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins.
Projects submitted to the JLFW Project Research and Development committee should address an identified community need, but not duplicate community services. The project should have strong JLFW membership support and be directly tied to the use of volunteers, as well as provide training for the volunteers. The agency will be required to present financial reports bi-annually to JLFW and should have the potential to become financially independent once the JLFW Project status has ended.
We are actively seeking a diverse membership of women of all ages. Our membership includes a broad array of women who bring many different talents and perspectives to the community.
For further information of building a partnership with The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. and becoming a Community Project, please visit our website at www.juniorleaguefw.org.
To learn more or apply for membership please visit: www.juniorleaguefw.org or contact the Membership Vice President at info@juniorleaguefw.org.

Kids in the Kitchen
This past May, four lucky FWISD schools were able to participate in the annual Kids in the Kitchen project organized by the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW). More than 1,300 students took part in a week-long wellness-based curriculum at their schools, culminating in a pep rally at each school. At the pep rallies, brandnew bicycles and other prizes were given to some lucky students. Students also received tickets to Mayfest, who graciously sponsored the project. Students were also invited to attend a health and wellness fair on May 21, and more than 400 students and family members showed up to celebrate healthy living and participate in the fun activities at the TCU Rec Center. Super Frog even made an appearance! Local businesses provided lunch, snacks, and water for students and their families. Representatives from the following local agencies set up booths to provide information on healthy living to attendees: Boys & Girls Club of Fort Worth, Blue Zones Project, City of Fort Worth Parks and Recreation Department, Cowtown C.A.L.F. Program, Camp Gladiator, Cuisine for Healing, Donald Spencer Fitness, The First Tee, Fort Worth Drowning and Prevention Coalition, Fort Worth Fire Department, Fort Worth Library, Girls on the Run, North Texas Poison Center, Peaks and Ladders, Poser Kids Yoga, Sam's Club, Smile Fort Worth, Tarrant County Public Health, Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, and The Reading Connection. The UNT Pediatric Mobile Unit provided free health screenings, and the Tarrant Area Food Bank Mobile Pantry provided free groceries to attendees. Additional prizes were raffled off at the end of the fair. "It was so fun to see the excitement and enthusiasm in the kids at the school rallies and health fair!" said Claire Florsheim, JLFW member and Co-Chair of the event. "Many students brought their Kids in the Kitchen water bottles to their school rallies and held them up and cheered as we congratulated them for completing the program. Seeing the kids cut loose on the dance floor at the health fair was priceless. We truly appreciate all our community partners who made this year's Kids in the Kitchen a great success and especially Tarrant Area Food Bank for providing free groceries to families who attended the fair."

Cook Children's Medical Center Pancake Breakfast
Cook Children’s Medical Center has been a part of our community since 1918 and has had a volunteer partnership with the Junior League of Fort Worth for 30 years. This tradition of service continued on April 9, 2016, at the 3rd Annual Junior League of Fort Worth Pancake Picnic. More than 400 Cook Children’s Medical Center patients, their family members, and community guests were served with the help of local fire fighters, military personnel, and police officers. The event took place at Cook Children's Medical Center and brought to life the children’s book "Pancakes, Pancakes!", by author Eric Carle. “The Pancake Picnic is a fun-filled, family event that includes more than a buffet of pancakes,” said Christina Bargas, Junior League of Fort Worth member. “It is a day when children get to leave their hospital rooms, forget about their sickness, and enjoy games and activities with other children. It is a way for the Junior League of Fort Worth and our entire community to show our support to our local children’s medical center that has touched so many lives.” Children enjoyed a morning of fun including petting a baby kangaroo, holding exotic reptiles, having their faces painted, taking pictures in a photo booth, drawing digital art at a Microsoft station, and creating Eric Carle inspired crafts. Children in attendance also received a bear to personalize with complimentary accessories and a Pancake Picnic T-shirt generously donated by Build-A-Bear. And don't worry...plenty of pancakes were had by all! Join us next year for another fun-filled event. We hope you will join us next year for Pancakes in Pajamas!
