Welcome from the President Natalie Martin Welcome to the 2017 Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market! Eleven years ago during my first Active Year, the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW) announced we were starting a new fundraiser, and it would be my placement for the year. None of us knew what to expect. For the next six months, I worked hard alongside 75 women to host the first ever Christmas in Cowtown. The first year was a huge success and raised $222,498. Last year, on our 10th anniversary, we raised $619,126. In total, Christmas in Cowtown has raised $3,159,814 to give back to the community. Whether you have been shopping with us from day one or this is your first time, we appreciate you! This year’s theme for JLFW is Impact with Empathy. When I chose that theme, I had no idea we would be putting it into practice on such a large scale. Our goal this year is to emphasize the personal connections that result from the work of our volunteers and those we serve. When Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston and south Texas areas, we quickly put the theme into action. In a 24-hour period, we collected more than 230 sheet and blanket sets for the emergency shelter operated by the City of Fort Worth for evacuees. We assisted in the supervision of entertainment for the children in the shelter, and we arranged and set up basketball goals, solicited musical entertainment, toys, games and books for all the children, all in the span of one week!

In addition to the relief efforts, this year JLFW is proudly supporting 15 community projects, with $395,000 in funding, our largest total ever. Our signature project benefits Camp Fire USA – First Texas Council, where our funds have completely remodeled a kitchen and community area for an after-school program for at-risk children. The individual impact on each of these children cannot be measured, and you help make it possible. The League’s commitment to impacting the community in a positive and productive way is shared by this year’s Honorary Chair Alann Sampson. We are honored to celebrate Alann’s impact in the community and her more than 50 years of service with the Junior League of Fort Worth. Thank you to Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market Co-Chairs Robin Greenhaw and Kelly Kinard and their committee. Your commitment to the League and the tireless hours you put into this market are immeasurable. I also want to thank Sustaining Advisors Robin Arena and Bonnie Epstein for their helpful advice and counsel. We do our best to improve the Market for our vendors and customers every year, as it has become such an important part of raising funds for what we do in the community. And these ladies make it happen. A special thank you to all those who attend the event and support this wonderful organization throughout the year. Christmas in Cowtown Honorary Chair Alann Sampson The Junior League of Fort Worth is honored to recognize Alann Sampson as Honorary Chair of the 11th annual Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market. Many words can be used to describe Alann: volunteer, leader, activist, philanthropist, visionary, but most importantly she is an inspiration. She has created a legacy of dedicated service to her community that is almost unparalleled. Alann is perhaps best known for her involvement with the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. From her initial role in greeting guests and handing out programs at the first competition in 1962, to her long tenure as Chairman of the Foundation, it is hard to think of the Cliburn and not think of Alann. As Van Cliburn himself said of her, “The respect and honours that Mrs. Sampson has received indelibly underscore her natural refinement and high cultivation. Her selfless efforts and deep concern for young people and their quality of education as well as the importance of Great Music as a profound enrichment of the human soul are her foremost passions of life.” In addition to her tremendous impact on the arts in Fort Worth and, indeed, around the world, Alann also has left her mark on the Junior League of Fort Worth and elsewhere. During her more than five decades of League involvement since 1961, she has helped shape the landscape for training and developing the League’s volunteers, both in Fort Worth and beyond as an Area V Director. Her work in bringing Mayfest to life forged lasting community partnerships that will continue to impact our community for years to come. She also has contributed time, devotion and energy to the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Streams and Valleys, the Austin College Board of Trustees, the Easter Seal Society, Lena Pope Home, St. Andrews Episcopal Church and other organizations. In the words of television journalist Bob Schieffer, “She is a great example of what the Junior League does well, training women to go out into their communities and continue to contribute their time and talent.” Alann has two children, Anne and Edward, who she raised on her own after the death of her husband, Edward. She is now a proud grandmother and, most certainly, a remarkable role model to Madeleine, Lillian, Frances and Hilton. It is with incredible gratitude that we are proud to have Alann serve as Honorary Chair of Christmas in Cowtown this year, and with true admiration we celebrate her years of tireless service, her extraordinary achievements, and her selfless devotion to the causes and concerns she holds dear. With her quiet but determined grace, eloquence, professionalism, passion, sense of humor and selflessness, she has in no small way advanced the arts, enriched the lives of so many, and truly embodied the soul of the Junior League.

As we look back at how far the Market has come throughout the past ten years, we can’t help but focus on our “reason for the season” - the Projects we fund with the dollars raised by the Market. In its ten-year history, Christmas in Cowtown has raised more than $3 million which has been used to improve our community and positively impact the well-being of children and families in the Fort Worth area. Current beneficiaries include ACH Child & Family Services, Camp Fire First Texas, Fort Worth Drowning Prevention, and Union Gospel Mission, among others.

Junior League of Fort Worth Camp Fire First Texas: Diamond Hill Renovation & Healthy Living Program - $100,000 Camp Fire operates a year- round, out-of-school program at Diamond Hill Station where 300-400 students participate in structured activities. The program engages students in sharing educational and physical activities with peers, and develops positive relationships built on mutual interests. The funds will renovate the current Diamond Hill Station facility. A garden will also be established where children can learn how to plant, maintain, harvest and then cook the produce. During the school year, Diamond Hill serves nutritious snacks when the children arrive from school and during school breaks they serve breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. They also have many lesson plans centered on health and nutrition and using plants from the garden to conduct science activities and create art. Volunteers will help plant a garden with the children. As the garden grows they will help with maintenance and harvest of the garden, as well as discussing nutrition.
ACH Child and Family Services: Wellness Program Expansion to Wedgewood - $20,000 ACH Child and Family Services’ Emergency Youth Shelter is the only emergency shelter for youth in Tarrant County. The agency is in the process of relocating their facilities to a more relaxed and home-like setting, and JLFW has the unique opportunity to partner with ACH in bringing the “Wellness Program for Shelter Youth” currently implemented at the Emergency Shelter to the Wedgwood Residential Campus. The Wellness Program includes planned ways to interact with youth from informational classes and activities focusing on nutrition, exercise, job-skills and other skill-building areas. The funds will cover the expansion, as well as provide materials needed for the classes, volunteer screenings and two community gardens. Volunteers will partner with ACH staff to design and implement this program. The class topics will rotate among nutrition, job skills, exercise, stress relief, team building, cooking demonstrations with an emphasis on cooking and exercise.
Alliance for Children: Assistance for Child Victims, Siblings & Protective Caregivers - $15,000 Alliance for Children serves Tarrant County children suspected to be victims of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse or neglect or witnesses to violent crimes. As part of their services, they offer group counseling for victims and their protective caregivers. The funds will help support their emergency client support program which provides basic needs to families, replaces possessions law enforcement may remove as part of an investigation or because it is a traumatic trigger and provides a means for travel to the Centers for counseling sessions. Volunteers will fill the role of sibling group facilitators leading activities and interacting with these children while their siblings and parents/caregivers attend group counseling sessions. This will include a range of activities from rocking an infant to leading games and art projects – but most important is developing a relationship and providing a sense of normalcy with the children.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth: Music & Youth Initiative - $20,000 In 2016-2017, JLFW funded $50,000 towards the Music & Youth Clubhouse at their Eastside Branch. The Clubhouse construction was completed in December 2016, with a grand opening in February 2017. The current year funds will assist with the next-step and provides all the musical equipment needed for the Music & Youth programming to be fully operational and sustainable. Music is merely a vehicle for what is at heart a youth development program servicing at-risk youth between the ages of 10-18. It teaches them the challenges of discipline, reasoning and problem-solving that are all inherent in music as well as exposing them to a world outside of their own – all while keeping them off the streets. These students are craving one on one time and attention from mentors. Volunteers will provide individualized attention to the students, help them prepare for upcoming performances, assist in organizing performances and provide feedback and encouragement when necessary.

Catholic Charities: Supportive Events for International Foster Care - $20,000 Catholic Charities International Foster Care Program (IFC) serves two categories of youth: Unaccompanied Refugee Minors and Unaccompanied Alien Children. They are one of only two organizations in the state of Texas meeting these needs and one of twenty in the United States. Through IFC the youth are resettled in the US via foster care families and offered case management services. The IFC provides a safe, nurturing, culturally-sensitive environment that will equip and empower them to integrate successfully into their new local community here in Fort Worth and to reach their full potential. The larger hope is that some of them return to their homelands someday to affect positive changes there. The funds will assist the IFC program by planning and executing supportive events each month for foster parents and children. Events will include monthly foster parent meetings, a back to school bash, life skills camp, holiday parties and financial preparation. Most of these minors are teenagers, but are learning at lower than grade level. Volunteers will serve as role models and mentors to help accelerate their learning and build a peer support network within their ranks.
Community Hospice of Texas: Hospice House Downtown Children's Area - $15,000 Community Hospice of Texas is the largest not-for-profit hospice in Texas and the largest not-for-profit hospice serving pediatric hospice patients in the DFW Area. The Hospice House Downtown inpatient unit serves patients from children to adults and many are uninsured and need a place to spend their final days. The funds will cover the remodel of the children’s playroom which includes purchasing toys and kid-friendly furniture to create a place for children to wait and play while visiting or staying with a loved one. This room is also used by the Child Life Specialist to provide grief support, therapeutic and recreational activities to help children explore their grief and learn ways to constructively cope with grief. Volunteers will put together activity bags for the children and also maintain the children’s playroom. Volunteers may also give their time to assisting Child Life specialist/therapist.
Daniel Migael Foundation: Eye Tech Academy - $25,000 The Daniel Migael Foundation provides free vision care and glasses to homeless, indigent and uninsured adults throughout the Metroplex. Eye Tech Academy is a program designed to introduce teenagers (aged 14-17) and residents (sheltered homeless) of the Union Gospel Mission to the field of Optical Services. The six-week program is designed with classroom modules and hands-on training. The objective is to work with high school counselors and case managers to identify those individuals with borderline academic performance or current unemployment status and expose them to a career option that may inspire them to succeed without compounding their struggles. Funds cover additional optical equipment for hands-on curriculum for the students to ensure they have optimal time and experience without waiting for their turn on the equipment. Volunteers are responsible for assisting with the students during the scheduled class times, tutoring as well as motivating and encouraging students. They can also assist in teaching the non-optical modules that are designed to teach communication skills, professionalism with peers and supervisors as well as completing employment applications and mock interviews. They are encouraged to participate with the students in the community service module; attending a community clinic in the Fort Worth area and assisting students in utilizing their learned skills from all of the modules with actual patients in a real-world environment.
Community Projects, Fort Worth Drowning Prevention Coalition: Safe Swim Program - $30,000 The mission of the Fort Worth Drowning Prevention Center (FWDPC) is to prevent drowning in Fort Worth by educating the community about water safety and equipping non-swimmers with life-saving skills. They are filling a much-needed gap in Fort Worth by providing these services regardless of individuals ability to pay. Over the past year FWDPC developed a beta-test program specifically for the Como neighborhood – reaching 100 Como residents in the Downtown YMCA pool. It was a success in part due to the attention given to cultural awareness – 18 community leaders went through the program to learn to swim and then to act as ambassadors in their community centers and churches to spread the word. The funds will continue this neighborhood emphasis and expand their concentrated effort to the north side of Fort Worth in the summers of 2017 and 2018. Volunteers will serve in two areas: registration and Water Buddies.
HopeKids North Texas: Hope Day Events Expansion - $10,000 HopeKids provides ongoing events, activities and a support community for families with children who have a life threatening medical condition. The funds will support the expansion of events in Tarrant County and volunteers will plan and implement events for families to enjoy. The goal if for families to be surrounded with the message hope can be a powerful medicine. Currently, they are serving 426 families throughout the Metroplex.
North Texas Healthy Communities: Blue Zone Project Fort Worth - $10,000 Blue Zone Project is a community initiative designed to foster and support individual and community health and well-being through permanent changes to the environment, policy and social networks. Fort Worth is the largest city to undertake the Blue Zone Project, and the goal is to bring real and tangible choices to people’s lives by making the healthy choice the easy choice. The funds will go to support the Cooking Demonstrations and Purpose Workshops. Volunteers will be Blue Zone Project Engagement Liaisons and will assist with preparation of materials for the events and activities during the events.
Presbyterian Night Shelter: Women & Children's Warm the House & Life Training Skills - $25,000 The Presbyterian Night Shelter’s Women and Children’s Center provides its clients with services empathizing crisis alleviation, self-empowerment, nutritional and behavioral health, parenting skills, early childhood intervention, vocational training and job readiness curriculum. The funds will provide “house-warming” items for the 40 private rooms within the Center that turn over 3-5 times a year. The approximate cost to furnish each room is $500 and the clients take these items with them when they transition to permanent housing. They have found by providing new, colorful furnishings in these rooms it is changing the demeanor of the Center and making it a happier place for these clients to be. Funds will be used to purchase the items needed. Volunteers will spend the majority of their time in the Center leading a variety of weekly basic life skill classes. This will be a collaborative program with the volunteers utilizing their collection of talents to offer meaningful classes to teach mothers to empower themselves and to be prepared to return to self-sufficient lives.
Continued Rivertree Academy: Nutrition Program - $50,000 Currently, Rivertree Academy provides their students three meals per day: breakfast, lunch and an afternoon meal before dismissal. The government programs are not satisfying to the children who come to school famished. The lack of fresh fruits and vegetables that qualify for those programs is also a disappointing contradiction to Rivertree’s dedication to serving fresh, wholesome foods. The funds will assist Rivertree in providing healthy, nutritious meals and snacks for their students. The staff recognized an increase in their focus, attention to the task at hand and diligence in the work improved, after a healthy snack. Volunteers will help create a nutrition program where students, parents and the Como Community can learn healthier choices, as well providing mentoring and enrichment events.
SafeHaven of Tarrant Country: Adventure Camp - $15,000 SafeHaven is a shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence. During the summer, there is an increase in need for activities for the children staying at the shelter. Adventure Camp will serve 150 children ages 6-18. The funds will be used to support field trips and other summer activities outside the normal budget. The volunteers will serve in the Adventure Camp or in the Evening Recreation component. The Adventure Camp chaperones can work with SafeHaven to help plan and implement the field trips and activities. The Evening Recreation volunteers will lead recreational activities such as games, art projects and crafts while mothers attend support groups.
T he Ladder Alliance: Success Store - $15,000 The Ladder Alliance provides tools for female victims of domestic violence and low-income women to help them become self-sufficient, successful and independent by teaching three sets of classes; basic computer skills, professional office skills and GED. Students attending class at The Ladder Alliance “earn” the ability to shop in the on-site clothing store called the Success Store. Clothing donations for the Success Store are received on a regular basis from supporters as well as JC Penney. JC Penney’s donations are mostly sample, smaller sizes so there are times that the store does not have the right size to fit students needing clothes. The funds will cover the purchase of reasonably priced larger sized clothing items for the Success Store as well as reworking the dressing room to allow for two separate private dressing areas. Volunteers will assist in the Success Store, helping students put outfits together as well as work as a “cashier” to count the number of items purchased and ensure the student has enough credits for the purchase. Additional duties include helping sort and hang donations received and purchasing and delivering clothing in needed sizes following monthly evaluation of needs.
Union Gospel Mission: Children's Enrichment Program - $25,000 This program was established in 2008 and currently consists of after-school tutoring, art therapy classes, science projects and nutritional education. Children entering UGM are usually 1-2 grade levels behind. With additional tutoring, UGM is able to bring the child up to grade level and sometimes beyond. Recently, UGM has seen a greater need to focus on the development, growth and traumatic effects that homelessness has on young children. The funds will cover materials for program activities. Volunteers will provide tutoring services. During tutoring children are helped one-on-one or in a small group for homework help, studying and extra attention for any subjects they may be struggling with. They will also help cover transportation expenses of the new bus that JLFW provided for during the 2016-2017 project year.

The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) strives to improve and positively impact the well being of children and families in our community by providing a legacy of trained volunteers. JLFW also provides funding to several agencies each year. Our Project Research and Development committee reviews applications submitted by various community organizations and selects those who will receive project status, which means the JLFW will contribute both volunteers and monetary support. Projects submitted to the JLFW Project Research and Development committee should address an identified community need, but not duplicate community services. The project should have strong JLFW membership support and be directly tied to the use of volunteers, as well as provide training for the volunteers. The agency will be required to present financial reports biannually to JLFW and should have the potential to become financially independent once the JLFW Project status has ended. Each year the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW) trains new members (Provisionals) to be effective volunteers and leaders in our community. Provisionals complete a year-long training, learning and experiencing the League structure, programs and participating in community service. JLFW is open to women who possess an interest in voluntarism, a commitment to community service, and a desire to reach their potential for voluntary community participation. JLFW reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins. We are actively seeking a diverse membership of women of all ages. Local Help from the JLFW: Hurricane Harvey and Disaster Recovery Last month, Texas faced one of the most destructive hurricanes in history. As many of our friends, family and neighbors battles the Category 4 hurricane dubbed Hurricane Harvey and its unprecedented flooding, we sat watching and waiting to See how we could help. Stories of how our community was affected poured in. Our members did what we do best - we took action. Working with the City of Fort Worth and our contacts through the Leagues in the affected areas, we immediately began accepting donations and providing volunteer hours. The work that we put in, and the generosity of our members and our entire community, was felt both in Houston and here at home. As one example, on Labor Day Weekend, in response to a last minute ask, we collected needed items that were sent directly to Houston, as well as specific items to the evacuee shelter here in Fort Worth. Our members answered the call and offered help immediately. In less than 48 hours, we pulled together to supply the evacuee shelter with 120 bed kits and a Houston neighborhood with 20,000+ diapers, wipes, water, hygiene kits, clothing and food. We answered the call quickly and efficiently. At the shelter, we further assisted the City of Fort Worth in providing entertainment for the 30+ children who were living there. Our members donated basketball hoops and the TCU basketball team donated basketballs to help the evacuees have fun and get some energy out. Mark Burrows, also known as Mister Mark, of First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, came and used his talents to entertain the children with songs, drums and other make shift musical instruments over two very active and fun afternoons. We gathered donations of books and activities for the older children and adults to help occupy their time. Cards, Connect Four, Sorry, coloring books and books just to name a few. We also donated bags for the evacuees to use to carry their items, so they didn't have to use trash bags. As we were laying out the items, one of the women commented that she was veery excited about the composition books, because she didn't have any paper to write on. It is the little things that truly make a big difference - while they needed emergency items and we provides them, we also attempted to provide the evacuees with a sense of normalcy and dignity during a very trying time. It was truly heartwarming to receive the phone calls, texts and emails from so many wanting to help, both within Fort Worth and the entire state of Texas. We live in an amazing community. The goal of the Junior League and this Market is to continue to lift up our community and serve those in need. And by doing this, we serve and lift up ourselves.

Mayfest, Inc. makes an invaluable impact on the Fort Worth community through its one-of-a-kind festival and through the grants it provides to its founding organizations, including the Junior League of Fort Worth. For 46 years, Mayfest has brought the Fort Worth community together in beautiful Trinity Park on the banks of the Trinity River to celebrate the best of Fort Worth. Mayfest is Fort Worth’s most anticipated annual family festival. It attracts over 200,000 people who come to experience the many different attractions and areas. With three live music stages, renowned food, carnival rides, various attractions and special events, and even a Craft Beer Garden, Mayfest truly has something for everyone and entertains the entire family. Mayfest’s impact on the Fort Worth community can be felt throughout the year! Profits from Mayfest, which to date exceed $7.4 million, are used to support our local parks and river development and community projects, ensuring a quality of life for all area citizens. With the cooperative effort of its sister organizations, Mayfest will continue to increase collective awareness of our parks and rivers, and to enhance the quality of life in the Fort Worth community for years to come. Every year, proceeds from Mayfest are donated back to the community. Mayfest 2017 was the most successful festival in its 45-year history and was able to give back its largest-ever amount to the Fort Worth community. Since 2000, through its partnership with Mayfest, the Junior League of Fort Worth has received more than $850,000 to support programs that directly impact our community. This year, the Junior League will use our grant to continue our Kids in the Kitchen program that empowers youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, Pancake Picnic which creates a fun filled morning for 500+ patients at Cook Children’s Hospital and expand our All aBoard training program which provides training to our members to enhance our impact on the community. Without the grant from Mayfest, these programs would not be the dynamic impactful programs they are today. Thank you, Mayfest, for all that you do. Kids in the Kitchen
Kids in the Kitchen is an Association of Junior League International program that began nearly 10 years ago, to fight against the epidemic of childhood obesity and to promote children’s healthy eating and living. In collaboration with the Fort Worth ISD and our partnership agencies, our goal is to reach 1000+ children in grades 2 through 5. Kids in the Kitchen has two distinct features. First, children are involved in a two-week engagement program through their schools to encourage a healthy lifestyle. This program culminates in a pep rally at each school where prizes are given to lucky students. Second, the children in the program and their families are invited to attend the Kids in the Kitchen Health and Wellness Fair, which celebrates healthy living and encourages attendees to participate in fun activities. Located at Billingsley Field House, the 2017 Kids in the Kitchen even was a huge success! More than 400 students and family members sampled healthy foods and participated in fun activities. Some of these activities include the Dancing DJ with his limbo, hula hoop and other contests, and exercise areas from partnerships with the Little Gym, Smart Barre and 24 Hour Fitness. Delicious food was supplied by Central Market, Sodexho, Great Outdoors and Dannon yogurt.. And, as always, TCU’s very own Super Frog was a big hit. We are already planning for next year’s event which will be held March 3, 2018. Mark your calendars and come join the fun.
Cook Children’s Medical Center Pancake Breakfast On April 8, 2017, Cook Children’s Medical Center and Junior League of Fort Worth partnered to bring a day of fun and happiness to sick children. The goal of the Pancake breakfast is to help children suffering from long-term illness to have a day of fun with their families. This year the breakfast not only included those in the hospital but also those who receive longterm outpatient care. More than 530 In-Patient and Out-Patient children attended. It was our biggest event to date.
Local firefighters, police and their families served the pancake breakfast to the record number of attendees. Our members brought food to the children that could not leave their rooms and they also received a visit from the face-painter and balloon artist. Outside in the breezeway, the children were treated to a performance by Eddie Coker as well as many fun games and a dunking booth! One special Cook Children’s patient created the T-shirt artwork for the volunteers and attendees. The memories and T-shirts will be cherished for years to come.
All aBoard Part of the Mayfest grant this year is to help expand our All aBoard program. This program was created to fill a request from our membership to expand our volunteer training into something deeper. The goal of this program is to train women to serve as volunteer board leaders in the community. Through a competitive application process, this program trains the next generation of women through education and mentorship. The 2017-2018 Curriculum will include 6 meetings and an Opening and Closing retreat for the 26 Junior League members chosen to be a part of this program. The curriculum includes training in curriculum includes training in leadership management skills, collaboration, goal setting, community engagement and more. The program also allows the member access to a JLFW Mentor to guide them through the year. JLFW’s Mission is based on promoting voluntarism, developing women and improving our communities. We hope this new program will help us do each of these in a deeper and more impactful way.
