Welcome from the President
Paige Pate
85 Years. One Mission. Welcome to our eighth annual Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market! Each year, I take special pride in walking the aisles of what has become an annual event for our League. I love seeing the signature fiberglass boot decorations, attending festive special events, and shopping one-of-a-kind merchants, while knowing the success of this market will support the community work of our League for many years to come. By joining Junior League of Fort Worth members in supporting Christmas in Cowtown, you join us in leaving a legacy of giving, a legacy that now spans 85 years in Fort Worth. For 85 years, members of the Junior League of Fort Worth have been driven by the same Mission. In 1929, the Junior League of Fort Worth was founded Photo courtesy of Gittings Photography with 10 charter members. Today, we have nearly 2,000. This year, our growing membership continues a strong tradition of addressing important community issues and improving the lives of Fort Worth children and families by providing over 45,000 volunteer hours at nearly 50 community non-profit agencies. The success of all of our fundraisers ensures our ability to continue making an impact, and our membership has approved funding for nine community projects during 2014-2015. We are pleased to announce a Signature 85th Anniversary Project with the WARM Place, assisting children who have experienced the loss of a loved one and providing $85,000 in funding to renovate their “Home with a Heart.” This year, we remain committed to improving education for Fort Worth children through partnerships with the YWCA, Performing Arts Fort Worth Children’s Education Program, and Fortress Youth Development Center. In addition, we will provide opportunities for the children at Presbyterian Night Shelter and Catholic Charities Assessment Center to embark upon recreational outings and to experience life outside of shelter walls; we will partner with Cuisine for Healing to help teach cooking and nutrition to Fort Worth families; we will work with Alliance for Children’s Kids Crew project to assist children who have been severely injured due to child abuse; and we will continue a partnership with SafeHaven’s Camp Heart to promote safety and support of children in domestic violence situations. The League’s legacy of community impact and leadership is shared by the Honorary Chair of this year’s Market, Mayor Betsy Price. We are delighted to welcome Mayor Price back to Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market, and we honor and celebrate her many accomplishments as community leader and Sustaining Member of our League. I also want to give special thanks to Christmas in Cowtown Co-Chairs Carrie Moore and Amber Robertson, and their Sustaining Advisors Kelly Hanley and Pat Lorimer. The committee has done an outstanding job planning this year’s gift market, engineering a fun, festive three-day event that ultimately benefits community agencies throughout Fort Worth. As you experience the wonder of the market, know that over 80 Junior League members contributed the gifts of their time and talent to produce this year’s event. They have worked tirelessly, and I thank them for the countless hours spent organizing merchants, planning events, staging decorations, and setting into motion all of the other details that we will all enjoy for the next few days. Most of all, thank you for joining us for the 2014 Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market! Whether you are one of our annual sponsors or you are simply enjoying the shopping and festive events, your support of the Junior League of Fort Worth allows us to continue our long legacy of service and community impact. I am delighted that you are here and look forward to joining you as we shop for a wonderful cause: supporting One Mission which has impacted our great community for 85 years.

Christmas in Cowtow Co-Chairs

We hope you have a magical, bright and fun experience shopping from more than 160 carefully selected merchants. And you can feel proud that your ticket purchase is going right back to the Fort Worth community to support the Junior League of Fort Worth’s mission of impacting the well-being of children and families. Be sure to stop by the Junior League booth to learn more about our Mission, giving opportunities and even some fun holiday shopping! Check out this year’s specially designed, custom 2014 Christmas in Cowtown Christopher Radko ornament, Junior League cookbooks from across the country, and one-of-a-kind designer Junior League-inspired jewelry from Kendra Scott!
When the Honorable Betsy Price agreed to be our Honorary Chair for the 2014 Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market, we knew this would be a very special year! She has been an invaluable mentor to us by showing the importance of Photo courtesy of Gittings Photography listening, strong leadership and courage. We are so thankful for Mayor Price’s vision for Fort Worth and her partnership with the Junior League of Fort Worth. We are equally thankful for our wonderful Junior League of Fort Worth sustaining advisors: Kelly Hanley and Pat Lorimer. They have beautiful hearts, engaging words and strong points of view – all things that inspire. And finally, this event is not possible because of us. All credit is due to the amazing Christmas in Cowtown committee of 84 women. Groups began working on this fabulous event last November aiming to find fabulous merchants and create the beautiful artwork displayed throughout the market. Others started in January thinking about the wine pull, pick-a-package, facility layout and even special events. Watching the market come together with our merchant relations, decorations and marketing teams throughout the past couple months was incredible. This experience of co-chairing Christmas in Cowtown has been a privilege and joy – and we are thankful for each woman on the committee for their creativity and willingness to serve. The personal reasons for joining the Junior League of Fort Worth vary from woman to woman. But we believe we all embrace the same ideas – to help those in need – to make a difference in our community – to leave Fort Worth better than we found it. To all of our very generous sponsors, market attendees and merchants, thank you for your commitment to making Fort Worth a better place. Your generosity to our city is admirable. We hope you have a wonderful experience at the 2014 Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market – leaving you full of joy and looking forward to the wonder of the season. For each of your contributions, big and small, have left us with exactly that! Many blessings and cheers, Carrie Moore and Amber Robertson

Christmas in Cowtow Honorary Chair
The Honorable Betsy Price
The Honorable Betsy Price, a Fort Worth native, was elected in 2011 as the 44th mayor of the City of Fort Worth. In 2013, Price ran unopposed and was re-elected to a second two-year term. Along with her focus on promoting jobs, strengthening education, fighting crime and improving mobility, Price has made significant strides along the path toward her vision of a healthy, engaged and fiscally responsible city. Price believes in the power of doing public good with private investment. Putting to good use her decades of experience building personal and professional bridges, Price matched generous benefactors with community needs to help the city with everything from health and fitness, to public engagement, to public pools, to animal adoptions and more. Mayor Price graduated from Arlington Heights High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Since then, she has been an active mother and a leader in the Fort Worth community. Her involvement with JLFW dates back to 1983. An Active in the League until 1990 Photo courtesy of City of Fort Worth and a Sustainer until 1997, some of her placements included being a special liaison for new transfers and leading yard beautification and house tours at the McFarland House. This year, Mayor Price has reconnected with the JLFW as a Sustainer and is serving as the 2014 Christmas in Cowtown Honorary Chair. When Mayor Price was asked about her decision to serve with JLFW, she said she was inspired by last year’s mission Our League. Our City. “It was time to just reach out and do it again,” Price said. “One of my biggest initiatives has been public engagement, and with Fort Worth being the 17th largest city in the nation, it is a continuous challenge to get individuals involved. The JLFW is a great organization for this initiative since the League has always had such a wonderful reputation for volunteering and being committed to the communities in Fort Worth.” Price said her parents raised her to believe that it was important to give back to her community, and this was one of the reasons she became involved with the League in the first place. Mayor Price’s daughter actually served as Special Events Chair for the first Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market, and Price’s son drove a U-Haul from College Station to Houston to pick up the ceramic boots that first year. One of Price’s placements as an Active in the JLFW was “Rockin’ Mommas,” which gave her the opportunity to rock babies at JPS Hospital. “This was an eye-opening experience as a young mother, and really impacted my desire to help other people,” Price said. She also mentioned that a nutrition placement she was involved with at the Child Study Center with mothers and their children really enlightened her and helped inspire her interest in the fitness, an initiative she is currently very passionate about as Mayor of Fort Worth. She has been married to Tom, an insurance agent, for more than 40 years and has three adult children, Kathryn, Phillip and Paul, and three grandsons. For all the time, insight and wisdom she has provided to JLFW, the city Fort Worth and especially the 2014 Christmas in Cowtown committee we are forever grateful.

Christmas in Cowtow Artist
Mary Ellen Murphey Becker
The exquisite artwork you have seen on our program cover, invitation, save the date and commemorative Christopher Radko ornament was created by the award-winning artist and League member, Mary Ellen Murphey Becker. This year's artwork, painted in the reflection of brilliant and shining jewels, celebrates the enchanting glow of excitement as the magic of Christmas draws near. Resplendent in rich tones of blue and purple, sparkling fuchsia, and twinkling green, the vivid colors in the ornament and ribbons capture our joyful celebration and jubilant anticipation of the Christmas season. Mary Ellen, a Fort Worth native, attended Trinity Valley School before studying political science at Texas A&M University in College Station. Born with a creative spirit, her artistic journey began at age three when her parents Photo courtesy of Gittings Photography enrolled her in various art classes such as painting, pottery, and printmaking at The Museum School in the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. At age 12, she was accepted into the Experimental Art Program at the museum under Fort Worth’s beloved art educator, the late Helen Silvestri. Mary Ellen continued taking art classes from Mrs. Silvestri for the next ten years and notes her as one of the most influential people in her life. Mary Ellen’s work has won recognition in competitions through local NBC station Channel 5, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, and has been displayed in various galleries in and around Fort Worth. Several years ago, while working in public relations at Baker Botts, LLP, Mary Ellen began painting for friends and family. Soon, she was painting murals, canvases, and furniture for children’s rooms. In 2008, she established Annie Bugs Art, and has devoted herself to painting full-time. Mary Ellen says, “I love capturing the joyful expression of a child’s imagination in my work.” We are delighted to showcase Mary Ellen Murphey Becker as this year’s Christmas in Cowtown Featured Artist. BUILDING OUR FUTURE AND FINDING YOURS.
85 Anniversary Signature Project th
As the 85th Anniversary signature project for the 2014-2015 year, the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW) has partnered with The WARM Place, a non-profit organization that provides support groups for children and young adults after the death of a loved one. The program, led by trained volunteers, provides a safe environment for children to express feelings and emotions, as well as the opportunity to meet and interact with other children who are experiencing similar circumstances. In honor of the JLFW’s 85th Anniversary and The WARM Place’s 25th Anniversary, the JLFW has donated $85,000 and committed 10 volunteers to support a complete renovation of the kitchen and dining room in The WARM Place house. The WARM Place holds support groups every Monday through Thursday evening, and each group night begins with family dinner. Every family and volunteer brings something to share for the potluckstyle meal, and everyone eats together at big tables in the dining room. Just as the kitchen is the heart of a home, so it is at The WARM Place. “There is a lot of chaos after a death, often resulting in the family meal going by the wayside,” said The WARM Place Executive Director Shirley Bowen. “Many times, the family is not able to face the empty chair at the table. The WARM Place potluck provides an opportunity to re-establish the family meal as well as offer a sense of community.” The house has been in use since 2002, and while the kitchen is still functional, it is desperately in need of an update and a new layout to make it more user-friendly and streamline the dinner process to better serve the growing number of group night attendees. The JLFW WARM Place committee kicked off the year in June with a tour of The WARM Place house. The tour ended in the kitchen with the committee picking the brains of The WARM Place staff on what their dream kitchen would look like. After determining the greatest needs for the renovation, the committee began reaching out to various design groups to obtain bids. Along with a re-configuration of the layout, the renovation will include new state-of-the-art commercial-grade appliances. “These renovations will directly impact the healing work that is done in our kitchen every night,” Bowen said. JLFW volunteers will support the entire renovation process, working with The WARM Place staff and contractors to create a space that is warm, inviting and promotes healing. Volunteers will also serve as house parents during support group throughout the year. This involves setting up for the dinner service, keeping food warm, helping to serve food and cleaning up after dinner. “The WARM Place touches the lives of children and families during a time of great need – a perfect match for our mission,” said JLFW President Paige Pate. Cook Children'ďż˝ Medical Center Pancake Breakfast
In April of this year, the 2013-2014 Junior League of Fort Worth Provisional class hosted a pancake breakfast to honor the patients at Cook Children’s Medical Center. Patients, families and guests joined Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat as they feasted on pancakes and made lifelong memories.
Junior League members decked out in bright yellow t-shirts greeted patients and their families and manned several carnival booths. Patients enjoyed face painting, soaking volunteers in the dunking tank, and fishing for prizes. Fort Worth Firefighter Charities provided clowns and brought along a fire truck for guests to explore. And, of course, no pancake breakfast would be complete without pancakes! Patients and families stuffed themselves with pancakes, syrup, and all the toppings you can think of. Volunteers also helped provide over 60 pancake deliveries so many of the patients who could not attend the event could participate.

Junior League of Fort Worth
Community Projects
The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) makes an impact in the Fort Worth community by providing trained volunteers and financial support to area non-profit agencies. Thanks to the success of Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market and other Junior League fundraisers, the following community agencies have been selected to receive both funding and volunteer support as Junior League Projects for 2014-2015.
Alliance for Children: Kids Crew • $10,000
Kids Crew directly assists children who have been severely injured due to child abuse, with the goals of healing the child, providing for emergency needs and preventing future abuse. Kids Crew provides personal care and attention to children in the hospital and financial assistance to the new caregivers who might not otherwise be able to take them because of monetary constraints. JLFW provides volunteers and financial assistance to help ensure the safety and care of affected children.
Catholic Charities: Assessment Center Recreational Outings • $40,000
The Assessment Center serves our community’s most needy children. These children are severely abused or neglected who have been removed from their homes. The Assessment Center meets all immediate needs (food, clothing and shelter) for their first 90 days outside the home. Children also receive medical, psychological and psychiatric evaluations, as well as counseling services. JLFW provides financial assistance and volunteers for recreational outings and field trips for the children. Admission and transportation fees are covered and souvenirs and snacks for the children are provided so that they may participate in the full experience of attending the event. JLFW volunteers serve as positive role models and work with the staff to ensure guidelines are followed and children are safe.
Cuisine for Healing: Education Outreach Program • $20,000
Cuisine for Healing offers healthy meals for patients combating life-threatening diseases, such as cancer, at no cost. Most are low-income clients, for whom this healthy food provides quicker recovery and better long-term health. Cuisine for Healing also serves the community by offering continuing education to learn about healthy eating habits and food preparation. The JLFW provides financial support for cooking-class meals (900 over the course of the year) and creation and printing of nutritional information and recipes. JLFW volunteers promote the classes at referring facilities and other medical facilities, assist in planning class menus, help prepare the printed recipes, help with meal preparation, and serve as class hostesses.
Fortress Youth Development Center: UPLIFT Parental Involvement Program • $25,500
Fortress Youth Development Center (FYDC) serves children from low income families in which caregivers are predominantly functioning below the poverty level and without necessary literacy skills. UPLIFT aims connect the parents or caregivers with the skills and knowledge necessary to support the FYDC curriculum. Financial assistance from the JLFW allows for parenting class facilitators, meal and snack supplies during the monthly programs, special family events, speakers and childcare during the parent programs and creation of a monthly newsletter. Volunteers serve as Parenting Class Preparers and Parent Mentors during the monthly events. Parent Mentors participate in the classes with the FYDC parents, serving as resources and role models. Additionally, JLFW funds and volunteers enable the continuation of the FYDC Spring Literacy Carnival where families gather, celebrity readers participate and children receive books as carnival prizes.
Performing Arts Fort Worth • $35,000
Performing Arts Fort Worth (PAFW) provides summer camps to middle and high school students as well as elementary students in Como Elementary’s B Sharp Music Program. An added Teachers’ Institute supplements their instruction techniques and prepares

them for the coming school year. Financial assistance from the JLFW allows 500-550 individual students and teachers to experience these camps. Additional funds allow for a Special Performance Event for the students and families of our JLFW FWISD Partner Schools. JLFW volunteers help facilitate the conversion of Bass Hall into a Performing Arts Campus. The team assists with all aspects of camp. Volunteers also research, plan and execute an evening at Bass Hall for the children and families of our JLFW FWISD Partner Schools.
Presbyterian Night Shelter: Awesome Outings and Women's Training Program • $7,500
Awesome Outings provides monthly adventures for children who live at the shelter, which exposes them to fun, engaging, and cultural experiences. This program helps build the self-esteem of the kids and encourages them to become good citizens. JLFW volunteers serve as positive role models and make a difference in a child’s life by connecting with, encouraging, and mentoring oneon-one with homeless children. The Women's Training Program takes place during Awesome Outings, allowing the mothers of selected children to participate in activities and life skills training while their children are away. JLFW funds support the Womens’ Training classes, allowing for speakers, materials, and food. Volunteers assist Night Shelter personnel in providing life skills classes to 30 women per month, which will help aid in their re-emergence into mainstream society after they leave the shelter. They help the mothers experience normalcy, interact with positive role models, and provide women in the program the opportunity to learn skills to apply when they move out and live independently.
SafeHaven: Camp Heart • $20,000
SafeHaven serves women fleeing family violence. Camp Heart is a biannual three-day camp allowing children of mothers in SafeHaven’s two-year supportive housing program to connect to and learn from each other, in a traditional camp environment. In addition to horseback riding and canoeing, the children participate in support group sessions. JLFW provides financial assistance to cover all aspects of camp for 40 children, ages 6-12.
The WARM Place: Renovating a Home with a Heart • $85,000
The WARM Place provides grief support services to children who have experienced the death of a loved one. Just as the kitchen is the heart of a home, so it is at the WARM Place. The setting encourages conversation and sharing and may be the only communal dinner a grieving family can manage. As its 85th anniversary signature project, the JLFW is providing financial assistance for a new kitchen and dining room. JLFW volunteers, in addition to serving as House Parents during group sessions with the children, will work with staff and contractors to plan the space, select all materials (energy-efficient appliances, paint, fixtures, furniture, etc) and be involved in all aspects of recreating the space. The goal is an inviting, warm, childfriendly space for healing.
YWCA: “Summer Scholars” • $30,000
JLFW will underwrite pre-school students, ages 3-5, who would otherwise stay at home with siblings while school is out. Typically, parents pull their preschoolers out of care, during the summer, to save money. Staying in the YWCA Child Development Center school program, during these summer months, prevents the loss of reading and math skills and prepares the students for Kindergarten. JLFW funds partial scholarships for the children, plus allows funds for “JLFW Summer Scholars” T-Shirts, and special events. JLFW is the sole funding for this summer project, which is an expansion of their school-year program. JLFW volunteers will make possible the Enrichment Activities associated with the Literacy: Creative Curriculum Approach. They will provide classroom preparation support, plan kick-off, field trip and graduation events for the students.

Becoming a Junior League of Fort Worth Community Project
The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) strives to improve our community by directing our resources to positively impact the well-being of children and families by providing a legacy of trained volunteers. The JLFW also provides funding to several community organizations. Each year, our Project Research and Development committee reviews applications submitted by various community organizations and decides which of those will receive project status, which means the JLFW will contribute both volunteers and monetary support. The JLFW will award more than $250,000 to worthy projects for the 2014-2015 year. Read below to determine whether your organization might benefit from the JLFW’s involvement.
Mission The project should address an identified community need but not duplicate community services. It should support our Mission: The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively charitable and educational.

Cook Children's Medical Center The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) is proud to have Cook Children’s Medical Center as the presenting sponsor of the High Heels & Holly Private Shopping and Luncheon for this year’s Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market. For almost 100 years, Cook Children’s has been serving the needs of the area’s children with quality health care and compassion. Cook Children’s would not be able to provide such excellence in care without the help of their dedicated volunteers, including many JLFW members. Cook Children’s volunteers provide 89,000 hours of service and do the work of 42 full-time employees. For almost 20 years, the JLFW and Cook Children’s have had a volunteer partnership. The JLFW first began volunteering with Cook Children’s through a Poison Education Program, which was in the form of a puppet show. The show was presented at schools in underserved areas and was performed in both English and Spanish. JLFW members presented 20-25 shows per semester and were responsible for transporting and setting up the stage and other equipment. Since then, JLFW members have volunteered in almost every capacity at Cook Children’s. Some examples include playing with patients and their siblings, making arts and crafts items with patients, delivering toys and books, rocking babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, cleaning and sanitizing toys, and helping with clerical work in the volunteer services office. The Ronald McDonald House Family Room (the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit waiting room) is a challenging and highly emotional environment, and when it opened in 2003, many Junior League volunteers gave their time to that space specifically and did so for many years. This year, the JLFW has provided Cook Children’s with 14 motivated volunteers to continue meeting needs that would otherwise go unmet and provide well-rounded, all-encompassing care to patients and families. Like Cook Children’s other volunteers, JLFW volunteers learn about medical center policies and procedures as well as patient care protocol. The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. is honored by the partnership with Cook Children’s and their generous gift to this year’s Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market. Their gift will allow the JLFW to focus its resources on the needs of our community and the well-being of women and children. In addition to their monetary support, Cook Children’s is being represented through the wonderful works of art created by their patients through CARPE The Creative Artist in Residence Programme (CARPE). CARPE was established in 2006 to provide patients and families with the opportunity to experience a variety of artistic mediums for therapeutic benefit. Through painting, music, film, dramatics and other forms of artistic expression, patients at Cook Children’s can connect the creative arts with the art of healing. Creative arts therapy not only helps patients to express their feelings while improving physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health but it also becomes a means of expression for patients and their families to better cope with the anxieties and fears in the health care environment. Patient art will be featured as part of the decorations at the High Heels & Holly Private Shopping and Luncheon. Art will also be available for purchase after the luncheon at the Cook Children’s booth during the Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market. Thank you to Cook Children’s Medical Center for their continued support of the Junior League of Fort Worth and the community we serve together!
