My name is Jack Bowe, and I explore. My core principle of architectural and urban design is the quest for formation of place through both exploration and discernment. I ardently believe that architecture and design requires constant testing and tinkering to provide a more meaningful quality of life— for both the client and community— and have geared my life and architectural education toward this attitude. I have wandered Paris’ streets at night, biked from Trier to Luxembourg, lived in Cologne, stood awestruck in the Vatican, and swam in an Icelandic iceberg lagoon, but was always fascinated by locals’ habitats. Travel is the exploration of the iconic buildings, landscape, townscape, and a way of life. I often drive with the intention of getting lost and seeking new landmarks by which to navigate, in order to absorb new surroundings. The art of getting lost builds the talent of understanding the larger grid. I take the same approach in design. I have always chosen to tackle projects through new mediums and ideologies rather than with a stagnant method. I have used over six different modeling programs, learned web interaction design, tested rapid prototyping, created physical models of out nearly everything, built on drawing skills, painted with coffee, branded with graphic designers, created projects solely on theory, and built a storefront. I have investigated all scales—from furniture design to a multi-block Großformen. In an age where we can’t deny the impact of any single object on its environment, I yearn to work with a team that values exploration. Exploration in expression, cohesion, and sustainability both in terms of providing efficiency as well as strengthening its human and environmental surroundings. I am currently seeking a chance to work alongside a dedicated and curious group that cares about the growth and community of the area, and I will work avidly and earnestly in whichever role I can contribute.

The Powder Horn Prompt: Participate in the RDI spring competition designing and branding a restaurant in an existing white-boxed strip mall commercial space. Design everything; including brand, building, floorplan, menu, lighting, take-out boxes, ads, and website.
Time Frame: 6 Weeks, Spring 2013
Synopsis: I worked with a German architecture student and 3 graphic designers, but took the lead role in the project. We designed a restaurant that focused on serving game meats and foraged greens, while providing a different space for casual meetings and a whiskey bar on the second floor. We were ranked first in the studio for overall connection between brand and design.
Areas of Focus: -Interdisciplinary branding -Archicad modeling

1400 Republic White-Box Prompt:
Renovate a first-floor commercial space that had been vacant for over 20 years.
Time Frame: 16 Weeks, Fall 2013
Synopsis: Worked in a group with five other students and an instructor to renovate the first floor of 1400 Republic in OTR. The site's first floor had been abandoned for over 20 years, so the floors had to be replaced, and we constructed structural tie-walls to correct the masonry building's lean. White-boxed the space for a future tenant while adding unique design elements, such as a boveda constructed from old floor joists and a custom address panel. The design/ build included procuring materials, construction, detailing and drawings, rapid prototyping, communication with contractors, and presenting to the Cincinnati Historic Conservation Board.
Areas of Focus: -Design/ Build -Flexible programming to account for unforseen complications -On-site diagramming and construction drawings -Construction skills

Live:Make Prompt: Design a new home for the Cincinnati Industrial Arts Complex at 216 W McMicken. Use the shell of the old building to design a space for four artists-in-residence, two light industrial workshops, a full industrial arts workshop, and a living complex.
Time Frame: 3 Months, Fall 2012
Synopsis: My project focused on using a concept of biological regeneration as a framework for designing the complex. I created a system of undulating supports from which the muscle of the building grew. I focused on allowing light and passive cooling to create large open workspaces and a communal living space.
Areas of Focus: -Concept-driven design, -Adaptive re-use

King Library Addition Prompt: Design an interactive meeting and seating space outside of Miami University’s King Library driveway. Focus on party size, light, pathways, and shelter. The addition had to be designed in such a way that it could be built by only 3 people.
Time Frame: 4 Weeks, Spring 2012
Synopsis: I explored using numerous 3D modeling programs to design a shelter that was light and open, offered interesting lighting opportunities, and could be pre-fabricated on a CNC router. The shelter organically rises to meet the building and incorporates rooms and furniture into its design. The plywood structure would be pre-fabricated to slide into a series of supporting columns.
Areas of Focus: -Rhinocerus 3D Modeling -Digital Fabrication
Stacked plans of structural layers

Architecture is the design of space, both interior and exterior. So it’s much more closely related to dance than it is to painting or sculpture. -Bruce Graham

Clifton Library Prompt: Design a library for the Clifton community geared for the 21st century. Determine a program and design that unites the community, ties to local architecture, and engages the pedestrian within a volume of 25,000 square feet.
Time Frame: 2 months, Spring 2012
Synopsis: Our team of 3 focused on designing a modern building that blended into the site with its shell. We incorporated a Hyposurface system and space frames that hung brick venerr as sun shading. The interior focused on creating atriums and designating levels for circulation and gathering.
Space frames that have brick-like tiles that will fluctuate in wind
Areas of Focus: -Collaborative design -Full building and site design
Hyposurface: A programmable transforming wall

Observations There was a time when I experienced architecture without thinking about it. Sometimes I can almost feel a particular door handle in my hand, a piece of metal shaped like the back of a spoon. I used to take hold of it when I went into my aunt's garden. That door handle still seems to me like a special sign of entry into a world of different moods and smells. I remember the sound of the gravel under my feet, the soft gleam of the waxed oak staircase, I can hear the heavy front door closing behind me as I walk along the dark corridor and enter the kitchen, the only really brightly lit room in the house. -Peter Zumthor
