Graveyard Book

Page 1

From the first page, this is a wonderfully gripping read. The characterisation and setting are excellent, while the build up of tension makes this a real page turner. The superb illustrations by Chris Riddell add to the spookiness of the book and give additional visual clues to the characters’ real identities. After his family is killed, Bod, a normal human boy is raised by ghosts in a graveyard where he meets witches, ghouls and his guardian Silas. Similar to The Jungle Book with the raising of an orphan child, this is very much a story for today with its mix of otherworldly creatures and bound to become a classic. The relationship between Bod and Silas is especially well written and the reader cares about the characters, knowing that the situation cannot last but concerned about how it will end, as end it must. A truly great read which will appeal to anyone, young and old from 9 upwards.
