What to look forward to…

Fond farewell & best wishes to Mrs Douch (Office Staff) who has been one of our longest serving members of staff at Sherborne Primary School. She is retiring alongside her husband and we wish them many years of happiness, whilst thanking Mrs Douch for all of her efforts for the school. We also sadly say farewell and best wishes to Mrs Perryman (SCAPA) who is concentrating on her other career and external hobbies and interests We welcome Mrs Hall as a new member of our office staff. Mrs Hall was the secretary at Buckland Newton Primary School and knows the role well.

On Tuesday 31st January the Safer Communities Team (Dorset Police) will be hosting an Internet Safety Day for ALL of our pupils, staff, governors and parents / carers. During the day the Police will show our pupils how to keep safe on line and the potential dangers of this fabulous education resource (if used appropriately). We would encourage you to discuss the contents of these sessions with your child/ren. You are also welcome to attend a dedicated Parental Information session at 2:15pm – 3:15pm within our Hall where the Police will be highlighting the many pitfalls for your child/ren and demonstrating techniques and strategies to keep your child/ren safe on line. School Uniform & Winter Weather Clothing A brief reminder that children are required to have the appropriate school uniform which includes their green jumper, white t-shirt, trousers, skirt and black shoes. During these colder winter months, a warm coat is also essential and your child may not be allowed out at playtime without this item for their own health. Space Week – Monday 16th – Friday 20th January 2017 Sherborne Primary has been lucky enough to be chosen as part of the National Tim Peake Space Project! This means that Miss Tavenner (Science Co-ordinator) and staff have organised an exciting and fun week for our pupils linked to the theme of Space! This will include science experiments, visiting experts and astrologists and even the children cycling to the moon!!!! Collection of Pupils for Medical Appointments Your child’s safety is our number one priority and to support this if you need to arrange a medical / dental appointment during school hours the ideal time to collect them is either at 10:25am, 12:15pm or 1:20pm. Thank you for your continued co-operation. Data Collection Sheets – Contact Details During this first half term your child’s data sheet will be sent for confirmation. This ensures that we have the up to date information and contact details in case we need to contact our parents / carers. Any changes, please complete and return to our office. Returning Forms to School Office To reduce waiting times please use the school post box outside reception to drop off any correspondence. Thank you. Charity Fundraising Sherborne Primary prides itself in supporting many charities and making life better for others. Together we have raised a fantastic £295 including Ben Burgess Rollo's Pocket money he kindly donated. All money raised has been donated to Save The Children. The shoe box collection was also a big success! Thank you so much for your kind support. Thank you for all your support at Christmas and your amazing children! A huge ‘Thank you’ to everyone who supported the Christmas Bazaar. I know everyone was incredibly impressed by the transformation of my office into Santa’s Grotto (thank you to Anna Vines for her magical touch!) Also thank you to Mr Sales, who was ‘taped to the wall’! Beth Oxford and her PTA team tirelessly performed wonders and raised a net profit of over £640. Christmas Performances Well done to all of our children who performed to a variety of audiences at Christmas. This included our Ladybirds / Grasshoppers who starred in the ‘nativity play’ (thank you to Mrs Maskew / Mrs Gould / Mrs Rose & their helpers). KS1 performed an excellent ‘nativity concert’ and thank you to Mr Maitland, Miss Porter and Miss Wakling and their helpers for kindly producing this show. Year 6 sang a Christmas Concert to Adults with Learning Disabilities in Yeovil, The Hayes Old People’s Home in Sherborne & to their parents. Finally our School Choir sang at a multitude of concert during the Christmas period, including the Hayes Old People’s Home, an elderly group in the Catholic Church in Sherborne, The Christmas Tree Festival in the Methodist Church within the town and outside Waitrose Supermarket (which made the front page of the Western Gazette!)

Arriving to school on time & Attendance A gentle reminder that school starts at 08:55am and children can arrive from 08:45am. It can be highly disruptive for children to arrive late and delay both their learning and the learning of others. Persistent lateness may also result in a fine. If there are specific issues with arriving at school on time, please do not hesitate to contact our office and book an appointment with Mrs Stent or myself. Pupil’s attendance is analysed regularly and low attendance might result in a fine, poor attendance can have lifelong consequences for our pupils. However, as above, if you have any concerns around attendance, do not hesitate to contact the school for further support.

Potential School Closure in Extreme Weather The school has only closed a few times during the history of the school, each time due to heavy snowfall. The advice is that the school will open if at all possible but that if there is a snowfall…  Children arrive at school as normal from 8.45am  Children are properly clothed – Wellingtons, coats, gloves, hats (all named please).  If the school closes during the day, parents will be contacted first – children may be sent to “safe” (friends’) house(s) etc. by agreement.  No child will be sent home without a safe arrangement being in place.  Parents of the youngest children may choose to keep their children at home if they feel this is appropriate.  No bicycles/scooters etc. are to be brought to school.  In case Chartwells are unable to provide hot meals, please send your child to school with a packed lunch. When the decision is made to close the School a text message will be sent to all parents as early as possible on the day and updated on the Dorset For You website ‘Closed schools in Dorset’ https://mapping.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/closedservices/Service/schools Please ensure the School Office has your up-to-date contact telephone numbers – thank you.
