What to look forward to…

Welcome To our new school year… We hope that all of our families and pupils have enjoyed a lovely summer break which actually included some sunshine!!!! We welcome all of our new pupils (particularly our new Reception intake), families and staff to our school and know that they will all enjoy life at Sherborne Primary. The children are going to enjoy another action packed term, which will include dress-up days, visits & visitors, sporting events and competitions, a multitude of extra-curricular clubs and will end with our magical nativity performance for our reception classes. Can I also take this opportunity to thank everyone who kindly supported our busy summer term with events such as Sports Day, our PTA Summer Fayre and our KS2 Play ‘Robin Hood’ to name but a few. School Open Morning This will be held on Tuesday 18th October between 9.30am and 12noon. Parents, prospective parents, grandparents and members of the community are invited to see the school at work. Please contact the school office to book your visit. The timetable will be:

Starting a new school? NEW Reception & Year 7 (Secondary) Secondary School applications have to be into Dorset County Council by 31st October 2016 https://www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/school-admissions/secondary-upper-school Reception pupils starting School in September 2017 closing date 15th January 2017 https://www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/school-admissions/starting-school PTA – Summer 2016 Fayre & ‘Monster Disco’ on Thursday 20th October A MASSIVE thank you to Beth Oxford and her amazing PTA team who raised a huge amount to support our children; the Summer Fayre in July was of particular note and raised over £1,300! Our PTA events start this year with a ‘Monster Disco’ on 20th October with KS1 (5:45pm – 6:45pm) & KS2 (7pm – 8pm) in our school hall. We really hope your child can attend and dress-up in a spooky costume. More details of how to

purchase tickets to follow.

If you wish to help your child by joining the PTA, please either contact our school office or Beth Oxford. Our PTA makes a HUGE difference to our pupils and school!

SCAPA – Breakfast Club and After-school Club – Please contact the School Office in school hours on 01935 812619 and/or SCAPA out of school hours on tel: 01935 810001 to enquire about bookings. Opening times are 8:00am until 8:55am and 3:30pm until 6:00pm during term time. We have now gone ‘live’ with our new online booking system and are very pleased to report that it has been favourably received. As with any new system we are aware that there have been some initial glitches, which have now been resolved but for which we apologise. A Message from Roberts Current SCAPA users areMr aware of the new system but if you wish to register your child for SCAPA for the first time, please contact a member of the Office Staff who will generate a password, unique to your child, for all bookings and any payments for school visits.

School Uniform Please remember that children should attend school wearing the correct uniform, as described in the school prospectus, which can be found on the school website. This should include a green school sweatshirt and shoes must be black and appropriate for school wear (no open toes, high heels or sling backs). Boots will only be permitted in extreme weather. Sporting Classics (in Sherborne near Boots the Chemist) now stock cardigans with our Sherborne Primary Logo. Free School Meals are also available for families in receipt of certain benefits such as Income Support, Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance or Child Tax Credits (where joint annual income is less than £16,190). The school receives a considerable amount of funding for each child who has successfully applied for free school meals. If you are in receipt of any of the above benefits it is very important that you contact Dorset Direct to find out whether you are eligible for free school meals, even if your child is entitled to ‘universal infant free school meals’. If awarded free school meals, you will also be entitled to a uniform grant of £35 per year, no charge for school day visits and financial help with residential visits.

TO FIND OUT WHETHER YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FREE SCHOOL MEALS PLEASE RING:

DORSET DIRECT ON 01305 221000

(You will need to give your National Insurance Number) You are not on your own….We Can HELP! School Nurse – Our School Nurse is available for ‘drop-in’ sessions to support our parents & carers on the following dates: 9.11.16, 15.3.16, 21.6.16 from 3.20pm onwards. Please either contact the office or just arrive for support with issues such as bedtime routines, bed wetting, medical worries etc. PSA - Please remember that our Parent Support Advisor, Jade Watson, is here to support you with any difficulties you might be experiencing. This could be support in the home trying to resolve conflict and improving family relationships; help with bedtime routines and that daily ‘homework battle’. Managing difficult behaviour and improving attendance or it could just be supporting you with finding out what other services there are in the area that you may be interested in. Jade is contactable via the school office and is happy to carry out home visits should this be more convenient.

‘Pear Tree’ - NEW Playgroup (linked to Sherborne Primary) Opening (end of September) I am very excited to inform you that the St Paul’s Playgroup building (the white building opposite school) will be opening with a new Montessori Playgroup called ‘The Pear Tree’. The new owner is Mrs Julie Partridge who also operates ‘Lower Covey Montessori’ in Yetminster. Very shortly a poster to advertise this excellent new facility will be displayed with details on how to access the playgroup for our pre-school children. I know that Julie will be working with Sherborne Primary to ensure a smooth transition between play school & Reception classes. Music at Sherborne Primary Music is a huge part of our school. We have a school choir, band and individual tuition in a number of different instruments, taught by several teachers (Dorset Music Service, Mrs Slogrove, and Mr Trim). Not only do our children have lessons / clubs, but also have the chance to perform in a range of concerts within school or the local area. Some of our Year 4 pupils are now continuing to learn the guitar and our Year 3 children will be learning brass across the summer term [2017]. In addition to these opportunities Sherborne Town Band has very kindly lent the school ten brass instruments to enable a group of children within Year 5 & 6 to learn music. If your child wishes to learn a musical instrument, please contact Mrs Hoffman (Eagles Cl) at school.

How Can We Help? I know that you will agree that your child’s education is a partnership between home and school. Last year Sherborne Primary ran workshops to support the latest educational techniques linked to ‘phonics’, ‘writing’ and ‘maths.’ This year we would like to organise workshops and information sessions linked to YOUR requests. Please complete the slip attached (also available in the office / online) so that we can identify how our staff can support our parents & carers with additional help, advice and information.

PLEASE RETURN BY FRIDAY 30th SEPTEMBER (end of the day)
