INNO MAKE

Multi-generational Maker Institution & Public Innovation Hub

Thesis, Melbourne School of Design Supervisor: Richard Stampton

Open Amphitheatre Underground Train ACMI & Federation Square

Inno make ; a wordplay of ‘Innovate’ and ‘Make’, is a communal space for artists to innovate, collaborate and create, with ideas and design driven by placemaking.

With the enthusiasm of Melbourne’s maker movement, the multi-generational maker institution, with the amalgamation of a primary school, high school and public innovation hub, opens the public’s eyes to the creative industry.

The proposed architecture offers flexible spaces that can facilitate a wide variety of activities, ranging from school activities to public entertainment. At the same time,

the architecture is designed to slow one’s time through directed manoeuvring and offer mental escape and respite amidst the fast-paced city lifestyle.

Experimenting with a new pedagogy of grouping interests, there would be many opportunities for interaction and exchanging of knowledge and skills between students and the public, young learners and skilled makers.

Innomake aims to provide a sustainable future typology as an extension of creativity and interests that city-dwellers and learners alike can indulge in.

TIME OUT

Studio D: Home+, University of Melbourne

Mentors: Mitchell Eaton & Nancy Ji

Client Critique: Johan Hermijanto

Time out - a rest space beyond a work spaceis a home studio to a local graphic designer who takes inspiration from context, materials and designs through experience and memory.

Spatial design, details and materiality are carefully selected to compliment client’s preferences. The home studio is segregated into private and public areas, with some spaces being interchangable at certain times. Taking advantage of its corner location, the living hall extends onto the street level, accomodating visitors as the living spaces transforms into a gallery to showcase his artwork and collection.

Challenging the design norms, the open concept bedroom and ensuite is situated at the basement together with an open lightwell, intentionally create a private, quiet space while having light drawn into the space for a peaceful, private environment with ample personal space.

SCULPT CHAIR

Merri Creek’s Living Architecture: Artwork / Rest Stop for Users & Animals

Merri Creek, home to many different animals including the much valued kingfisher, creates the unique opportunity for interaction between users and animals inhabiting the space.

Sculpt chair as a rest stop is inspired by the design of kingfishers’ wings, while experimenting with structural strategies using Tessellation, allowing a lightweight pre-fabricated form. With kingfishers creating their homes and resting on the Sculpt chair , it becomes a piece of artwork and viewing platform while allowing the public to relax by the creeks.

PERSONAL

Selected Works

Having a keen interest in the idea of wordplay and puns, I challenge myself in making art and designs that reinterprets the norm and create the unexpected. I also enjoy playing with colour coordination and saturation to generate different perspectives of existing architecture.

From time to time, I would experiment to innovate existing products or explore new forms using handmaking techniques.
