A02. IN SITU FINAL SUBMISSION 636903_JAIME LEE 2013_SEMESTER02

PROJECT: CARLTON RESIDENCE TOWNHOUSE DEVELOPMENT 01-05 HOLMWOOD PLACE CARLTON VIC 3053 ARCHITECTS: SMAC DESIGN PTY LTD. 19 SMALL STREET HAMPTON VIC 3188

INTRODUCTION The construction site I visited for this assignment is an approximately 346 m2 townhouse project accommodating two households having a total area of approximately 1151m2. The site is located in a residential area in Carlton with convenient access to public transportations (Trams, buses), restaurants, retail, grocery stores and educational institutions. It only takes an approximately 10-minute tram ride to get to the Mel-

STRUCTURE_FOOTINGS&FLOORING 01. Bored Piers_ Two types of bored piers are used, one with 2000mm socket and the other with 1350mm. Footings are created with diameter of 450mm. Diagram in page ____ shows where the two types of bored piers. 02. Capping Beams 03. Concrete Slab _Suspended slab with waterproof membrane on top _Consist of reinforcement in slab

STRUCTURE_FOOTINGS&FLOORING 03. Steel Beams Steel beams are used alot throughout the construction site especially in first floor flooring and framing. Use of cranked steel beams Extensive use of I-beams

STRUCTURE_CEILING&ROOF 01_Bond Deck Seen using in ceiling of ground floor. However back cro props are needed for structural support since the bond deck has too wide of a span. 02_Timber Lintel Timber lintels are to hold up masonry walls in order to create openings for doors and windows. As seen in the brief sketch these lintels are located mainly on the side of the structure and some insde that are going to be door openings. 03_Timber Rafters

STRUCTURE_WALL SYSTEMS 01_Existing brick walls Take existing surrounding structures into account before beginning construction since it affects the stability for both structures. For examples if footings next to these existing structures are dug too deep, it would potentially cause the structure to collapse.

02_Demolishing brick walls The existing brick wall next to unit 1 will be demolished and rebuilt using the same bricks. (This part of construction is yet to begin) 03_Concrete Block Walls Built using brick bonding where bricks are laid in an orderly fashion to achieve stability and aesthetical needs. 04_Reinforced Blockwall Found next to the front gate and inside the structure as reinforcements to walls.

AESTHETIC DESIGN As 4 weeks went past, the appearance of the structure is starting to reveal, although only unit two has started construction, the main idea and aesthetic design can be seem through the choice of wall materials and the main structural elements. It gives off a sense of simplicity and modernity by the use of ash grey concrete bricks, it is cost effective and can the method of bonding resembles traditional clay brick houses which gives me a really homey and warm feeling that could provide me with a sense of security. The overall design of this structure is simple and of a typical townhouse, which is understandable and also reasonable since this type of buildings would not need eye-catching components or other cost demanding materials and features that would typically be required whn designing a commercial structure.

CONCLUSION This assignment has given me an opportunity to go out of the classroom and learn from real construction sites and apply my knowledge learnt from lectures, studios and other literatures. It has assisted me greatly in understanding the construction language. From the several site visits, I learnt that the birth of a building is not easy in any way, it involves numerous discussions, exchange in opinions, evaluations and inspections from workers of different fields such as builders, architects, contractors, structural engineers, electrical engineers etc. I strongly feel the need for the cooperation of these professions from the different problems and issues that happened when I was visitng the site, these include the measurements of footings, limitations of the bond decks etc. The issues will have to be resolved through again, the discussions and evaluations of different professions.
