J. M E N D O Z A G A R D E N S is pleased to announce the launch of our portfolio of recent and completed projects.
The vision for a project originates from the site, the client and the unique challenges found within each space.
All these factors inform and ultimately spark the creative process throughout the development of the garden. Our objective is to create landscapes that artfully balance design with plantsmanship whether on rooftops or on the ground. As all landscapes are a work in progress, this portfolio provides a visual record of the evolution of selected gardens.

PR OJ E CT # 1 | Urban Interpretation of a Moss Garden Inspired by the gardens of Kyoto, Japan LOCATION | Downtown Manhattan Rooftop SIZE | 1,100 square feet INSTALLATION | Summer 2012
WEIGHT is the most demanding restriction in urban rooftop gardens, often limiting the
union between the form and function of a space. The design of the garden aims to maximize the garden area while minimizing the combined weight of all garden elements. Four-to-Six inch deep continuous planters containing moss and perennials emphasize the ground plane while providing the sense of walking through a garden 10 stories above the street.

Moss plugs when fully grown will create a soft green carpet with an elegant, curving edge. (Above)
The sweeping curve of the planter box counter balances the geometry of the pavers.
