MARKET G R A D U AT E P R O J E C T Market Hall

For my graduate capstone project I chose to design a market. This market is not just a place to buy food, but a place for connection. Like the table itself, food brings people together while simultaneously making them aware of their differences. Hence, this market sets the stage for an anticipatory journey of sensory exploration and learning, culminating in a shared dining experience. Located in the former Uline Arena in the NoMa neighborhood of DC,

the market not only serves the local community’s food needs, but will act as a city destination point. Flexible space in the market will be able to host a wide range of events to include: music events, town hall meetings, community gatherings, communal dining, art installation space, and a variety of educational and cultural events. ORGANIZATION STUDIES

OVERLAYING GRIDS. The architecture of the space employs a series of overlaying grids to allow for varying levels of intimacy and formality, which form a metaphorical city within the building. The market layout draws inspiration from a city grid, with city roads that intersect at defined nodes to create primary, secondary, and tertiary circulation routes:

GRID A

GRID A - structured city blocks aligned with building columns GRID B - “main avenue” forms circulation to the central cube GRID C - “streets” connect the nodes to the main avenue

RAW vendor zone: • zone where food is at its purest form - untouched, unmanipulated • interact with the person who’s grown and harvested the food • act of “gathering” -- architecture promotes wandering, exploration, discovery • walls composed of transparent wood slat screens to create layered views, and frame the cube beyond.

COOK education kitchen: • food and human connection, intimacy increases • cooking for others - performance as means of bonding and sharing one’s ideology and taste via food • bronze panels frames the cube beyond

COOK education kitchen

MEET cafe zone: • informal, meeting space initiated through consumption of food • full view of cube occurs • materials: white concrete and wood

EAT. The cube restaurant is the final stage of the human to food journey • beacon draws viewer towards it, builds anticipation • most formal and intimate dining occurs here • materials of each node culminate in the final cube construction

ja pa nese tea C e r e m o ny P a v i l i o n This temporary Japanese tea ceremony pavilion is designed to recall a lantern sitting upon a small island surrounded by trees. Sitting on a small peninsula on the Constritution Pond located on the National Mall, the tea house’s light shines across the pond beckoning viewers towards it. To access the tea house, the visitor crosses a footbridge, and follows the curve of a stone wall guiding the visitor to the destination. Much like a haiku, in this Japanese tea house design, the unstated holds as much meaning as what is said. As the user walks along the path to the tea house, their passage through multiple structures, “torii”, coupled with deliberate intervals between the structures, “ma”, represents the spiritual tranformation one experiences during the precise and deliberate movements of the tea ceremony.

s now h av e n This Snow Haven residence is set in the Pyrenees mountain region near the BaqueiraBeret skit resort. The “carve” concept highlights the homeowner’s most special objects - his wine collection. With additional inspiration coming from the thick carved walls of gothic cathedrals found in Spain, this ski villa becomes a methaphorical cathedral with an “altar” to wine, and creates a stately and ceremonious experience for the owner and his guests as they proceed through the space. [8 weeks] Residential Studio Media: Hand-drafting, Foam models

final model CONTROLLED DAYLIGHT. • Double height windows backlight wine to create a stained glass effect • a six inch reveal around the fireplace wall and at the top of the gable ceiling creates a dramatic cross of light to highlight the residence’s “altar to wine”.

The architecture of the space compresses, layers, and interacts with the user to convey a sense of momentum, radial movement, and rhythm - just as one would experience when practicing Capoeira. The concept was initialized with a series of study models and sketches to explore “boundaries” and the spaces created when these boundaries intersect. Fu r n i tu re des ign Designed in conjunction with the Croatian boutique hotel project the “ebb” stool is an abstracted expression of the Dalmation coast landscape. The design uses a visually light powder coated steel frame wrapped in twisting and overlapping blocks of colored vinyl cord. For use both indoors and outdoors, the stool provides seating for the rooftop garden bar guests as they “forage for their cocktails”. [12 weeks] Furniture Design
