BELLE ISLE MARSH RESERVATION

THE TRANSATLANTIC FLYWAY IS A BIRD MIGRATION ROUTE THAT EXTENDS FROM THE CANADIAN MARITIMES TO THE GULF OF MEXICO. THIS ROUTE IS USED BY BIRDS BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF TOPOGRAPHIC BARRIERS OVER ITS ENTIRE EXTENT. THE TRANS ATLANTIC FLYWAY ENCOMPASSES SOME OF THE HEMISPHERES MOST PRODUCTIVE ECOSYSTEMS, INFLUDING FORESTS, BEACHES, AND COASTAL WETLANDS, WHICH PROVIDE WATER, FOOD, AND COVER EXIST OVER ITS ENTIRE LENGTH. THIS AVIAN SUPER HIGHWAY IS USED BY 500 PLUS BIRD SPECIES, AND MILLIONS OF INDIVIDUAL BIRDS- 40 PERCENT OF WHICH ARE SPECIES IN NEED OF CONSERVATION.

IN THE MID-20TH CENTURY A SERIES OF INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURES AND A FUEL TANK FARM WERE BUILT ON FILLED MARSHLANDS SURROUNDING BELLE ISLE. THESE STRUCTURES INCLUDED THE BELLE ISLE TROTTER TRACK, NOW SUFFOLK DOWNS RACE TRACK. THE SUFFOLK DOWNS DRIVE-IN THEATRE WAS BUILT ON THE SITE OF THE PRESENT BELLE ISLE RESERVATION. IN 1986 A SUBSTANTIAL WETLAND RECONDITIONING PROGRAM WAS BEGUN.

BELLE ISLE MARSH RESERVATION PRESERVES 152 ACRES (62 HA) OF THE 241-ACRE (98 HA) BELLE ISLE MARSH. THIS IS THE LAST REMAINING SALT MARSH WITHIN BOSTON.THESE MARSHES ONCE USED TO BE PREVALENT ALONG THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY SHORELINE. THE MARSH IS HOME TO MULTIPLE SPECIES OF SALTMARSH PLANTS, FISH, AND SHELLFISH, MOST RARE IN A METROPOLITAN AREA.
