design The gardens of Saiho-ji in Kyoto demonstrate good use of rock placement to evoke both motion and stability. They are also an idealized example of natural transition among trees, small plants, rocks, and water. In my interpretive drawings, I communicated that motion as well

Use expressive hand-drawn graphics to redraw and enhance AutoCAD plans.
design I used black pens and Prismacolor pencils to draw and render personalized landscape graphics for existing AutoCAD plans. I also made section elevations and plant suggestions. Additionally, I created base and vegetation maps for the Korean War Veterans Monument based on a site visit and satellite photos.

program Working from an outdated plat and a site visit, draw an updated base map of Windmill Park in Alexandria, VA. Create inventory maps and perform a site analysis.

program Working from a plat, redesign a sloping residential lot to incorporate: better grading and drainage privacy screening play area expanded parking sculpture focal points from key windows handicapped access
design I worked off the angles created by the house and property line to divide up the backyard into two levels with a retaining wall and planting beds. Paths and a wraparound patio on the north side of the house join formerly disconnected patios and improve the flow between back and front yards. I used Google SketchUp to make a rough guide for the perspective drawing.

program Working from a plat, redesign an old train station building and lot so that it can reopen for train service and community events.
design I used foamboard, posterboard, and lichen to model a southwestern train depot. Taking a cue from north African patterns, the station features arced planting beds, adobe walls, and wooden doors. A large community space with moveable tables

program Research and present a historical garden design technique that you would use.
design Sanzonseki means “triad rocks� and dates to the 11th century in Japan. In Japanese gardening, rocks are often chosen that suggest vertical, horizontal, or diagonal motion. The

three directional forces correspond to the classical Chinese division of the cosmos into Heaven, Earth, and Man. Sanzonseki is a triad with one of each, with the vertical rock being largest and in the middle. Such triadic composition is an aesthetic archetype in many arts.

program Specify a variety of conifers and winterberry hollies for a 4.5-acre elementary school plot with areas of various growing conditions, and list them using American Standard for Nursery Stock specifications.
design My design concept for this garden was tactile interest. I chose plants that would make students want to pick a leaf or branch tip to feel and examine. A common standard for diversity is for no more than 30 percent of plants be from the same family, no more than 20 percent from the same genus, and no more than 10
