Andrew Westmoreland President

Andrew Westmoreland became Samford University’s 18th president on June 1, 2006. As Samford’s president, Westmoreland has led the university to embrace a vision to enrich and expand its service to students, and further inspire their desire to meet the needs of the world. To advance this vision, the university is committed to a challenging strategic plan with four priorities: emphasize student success, enhance our community, extend our reach, and ensure financial strength. Forever Samford is a six-year, $300 million capital campaign that was launched in fall 2016. It is the largest undertaking of its kind in Samford University’s 179-year history. Funding from the campaign will help to ensure that Samford continues to prepare and send dedicated, thoughtful and ethical people out into the world. Prior to assuming the Samford presidency, Westmoreland was president of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Before his selection as Ouachita’s president in 1998, he had served on the administrative staff for more than 19 years in various capacities. Westmoreland holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science and a doctorate in higher education administration. A

native of Arkansas, he is married to Dr. Jeanna Westmoreland. They have one daughter, Riley, who is a graduate of Samford and of Vanderbilt University. His career in higher education spans 40 years, including two college presidencies. In addition to his duties as Samford president, Westmoreland teaches courses in political science as his schedule allows. He serves as a member of many boards for charities and other entities, and he is an author and speaker. He is the past chair of the Board of Trustees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which oversees accreditation for more than 800 colleges and universities from Virginia to Texas. He also served as president of the American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities. Currently, he serves as the executive director of Samford’s Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership. The Westmorelands enjoy entertaining and annually host more than 9,000 students, employees, alumni, donors and other friends of the university in the president’s home, in addition to the thousands whom they greet and host at on-campus events. 11

Director of Athletics Martin Newton Samford University alumnus and director of athletics Martin Newton has transformed the Bulldogs into one of the Southern Conference’s most successful programs since taking the helm of the department on March 9, 2011. A recognized leader in collegiate athletics, Newton began a four-year appointment to the NCAA Division I Council and the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee on July 1, 2019. The Division I Council is a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I while the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee ensures that appropriate oversight of men’s basketball is maintained and makes recommendations related to regular-season and postseason events. On the field and court, the Bulldogs have captured 44 Southern Conference regular season and tournament championships during his tenure, including a school record eight titles in 2019-20, a season shortened by the cancellation of spring sports due to COVID-19. Additionally, in the most recent Southern Conference All-Sports standings, Samford finished second in the Germann Cup (top women’s program) standings and fourth in the Commissioner’s Cup (top men’s program) standings. Academically, the school’s student-athletes have also posted outstanding results in the classroom, with 1,353 Bulldogs being named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll. Samford’s student-athletes posted an impressive 97% in the most recent NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report, ranking No. 1 in the state of Alabama and 18th nationally among Division I institutions. Over the last eight years, the Athletics Department has seen significant growth in corporate partnerships and annual giving, more than doubling philanthropic gifts and sponsorship revenues. In fiscal year 2020, Samford has received gifts totaling $1,634,942 and is expected to eclipse $2 million for

the second consecutive year. Facility enhancements have also been a hallmark of Newton’s tenure with the Bulldogs. Phase I of the Seibert Stadium project was completed in August 2019 and was 100% donor funded. The new state of the art Daktronics video board is the second largest in the Southern Conference and included a significant upgrade to the sound system. In the spring of 2017, a goal of Newton’s was realized when the inaugural class of the Samford Athletics Hall of Fame was inducted. The first-class facility is housed on the third floor of the Pete Hanna Center, and includes inductee plaques and displays, along with a display of important moments in Samford Athletics history and another honoring all of the school’s conference and NCAA champions. He has also negotiated an exclusive universitywide footwear and apparel deal with Nike, helped lead the way on a university-wide licensing agreement with the Licensing Resource Group and successfully transformed the antiquated radio network into an industry leader in campus-led broadcast production with all Samford home athletic events airing on ESPN3 or ESPN+. A 1983 Samford graduate with a degree in business, Newton was a four-year letter winner in men’s basketball and was an All-Conference honorable mention selection in 1980. Following graduation, he worked in sports marketing for Converse for 13 years. Newton then spent 13 years in a similar capacity at Nike. Prior to his return to Samford, Newton was hired at the University of Kentucky in 2009, where he managed the budget, fund-raising, compliance, scheduling, marketing and academic support for the men’s basketball program. He is a member of the board for the Birmingham Bowl, and he is a member of the Birmingham Quarterback Club, Birmingham Tip-Off Club and Birmingham Kiwanis Club. He is also an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Newton and his wife, Cindy, have three grown children, Katie, Madison and Charles. They also have two grandsons, Charlie and Sawyer. 13

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bucky McMillan

Bucky McMillan was named Samford’s 29th head men’s basketball coach April 6. “When we set out to hire a new coach for our men’s basketball program, we had three main criteria,” director of athletics Martin Newton said. “We wanted someone with head coaching experience and a proven track record of winning championships, someone who could excite and engage the Birmingham and Samford communities, and someone who understands and embraces the mission of our great university. Bucky McMillan quickly became the obvious choice. Bucky has a proven track record of winning championships, a tireless work ethic, a unique basketball mind and the energy and enthusiasm to bring championship basketball to Lakeshore Drive.” McMillan comes to Samford after serving as the head coach at Mountain Brook High School for the past 12 seasons. McMillan has led the program to unprecedented success, 14

reaching the state finals in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the team won the title in the state’s highest classification in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2020, the Mountain Brook program was ranked 13th in the list of top 25 public high school basketball programs in the United States over the last decade. In 2018, the National High School Coaches Association named McMillan its National Coach of the Year after his team finished the season with a 34-3 record and ranked No. 17 in the USA Today national rankings. His 2019 team finished the year ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today. McMillan’s teams were ranked No. 1 in the AHSAA state rankings during each season from 2013 to 2020. “I am thankful and grateful for this opportunity,” McMillan said. “I want to especially give thanks to the leadership at Samford for their confidence in me to lead this program. When I came to Mountain Brook, I had never been a high school head coach and the administration there took a chance on me, and this is a similar situation. I am ecstatic to be going to work for one of the top Christian universities in the country, whose values I believe in. I am excited to get to Samford and build relationships with the faculty and staff, and most importantly with the student-athletes.” McMillan was named USA Today’s Alabama Coach of the Year in 2019; Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2015; Birmingham Tip-Off Club State Coach of the Year in 2012, 2015 and 2019; and Over The Mountain Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. He was selected to coach the Alabama All-Stars in the 2019 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. That same year, he was named one of the coaches of Michael Jordan’s “Jordan Brand” All-Star Classic.

2020 BASKETBALL

During his 12-year run in charge of the Spartans’ program, McMillan won 333 games, averaging nearly 28 wins per season. After posting an 18-12 record in his first season as head coach, McMillan’s teams won at least 23 games in each of the next 11 seasons. In addition to his work at Mountain Brook High School, McMillan founded the Bucky Ball Academy, a youth camp to enhance and unify basketball in the Mountain Brook community. He also founded the Alabama Flyers program that provides off-season basketball opportunities for the community’s youth. McMillan played his college basketball at Birmingham-Southern College from 2002 to 2006, where he was named to the Big South Conference Academic Honor Roll all four seasons, and to the league’s All-Academic team as a senior. He also earned the distinction of being named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honor’s Court. McMillan earned his bachelor’s degree in education services from Birmingham-Southern in 2007. While a student at Mountain Brook High School from 1999 to 2002, McMillan received All-State honors from The Birmingham News in

2002 and was nominated for the McDonald’s High School All-America team. The Birmingham News also named him to its All-State Athletic Academic team. “I encourage everyone to get their season tickets now and enjoy the Bucky Ball era of Samford basketball,” Newton said.

Rouco broke into collegiate coaching at Florida International as an assistant, serving four seasons (1987-91) and returning to FIU as an assistant from 2000-2003. He spent a season at UTEP in 2003-04, helping the Miners win 24 games and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Rouco later became the head coach at FIU, a position he held from 2004-09. During Rouco’s tenure as the head coach of the Panthers, FIU made a semifinal appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, the program’s longest postseason run since 1998, and mentored four All-Sun Belt players. Prior to his tenure at South Florida, Rouco spent three seasons at Ole Miss (2011-14), helping lead the Rebels to a school record-tying 27 wins and an SEC Tournament title in the 2012-13 season. Rouco was a successful prep coach in the Miami area at Loyola (1986-87) and Norland (1991-95). He boasts professional head coaching experience for Club Mauricio Baez (1995) and Los Minas (1996) in the Dominican Republic, helping both squads reach the semifinals of the playoffs. In 1996-97, he was the head coach of the Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuela, and he returned to that country in 2010. A 1987 graduate of Nova Southeastern with an education degree, Rouco and his wife, Kelly, have two sons, Sergio Alessandro and Fabian.
