Less than a week after a Barrhaven-area couple were killed in a motor vehicle collision, a Go Fund Me campaign has been started for the two teen-aged children of Brian and Dora Aspelund. So far, more than $23,000 has been raised online to help the couple’s son Matt, 19, and daughter Kaitlyn, 17. Just before midnight on Easter Monday (April 2), emergency vehicles were called to the corner of Merivale Rd. and Viewmount Dr., across from Merivale High School. High tech professional determined to win Nepean for the Ontario Liberals in 2018 Former high tech professional Lovina Srivastava is ready to challenge Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod in the newly created Nepean riding. Srivastava was elected the Ontario Liberal Candidate for Nepean following a highly contested nomination race. The election will mark the end of the old NepeanCarleton riding, which included Riverside South and the rural communities in the Rideau-Goulbourn and Osgoode Wards. Srivastava commented that s a result of the boundary changes, the riding has become more suburban, which she says aligns well with historical Liberal voting trends. Even so, she knows that winning this seat is going to require strong determination and concerted effort, and she is more than up to the
challenge. “I am very upbeat about my chances to win the new riding of Nepean,” Srivastava said. “I am fully committed and prepared to put in the energy and hard work that I know it will take for me to take on the responsibility to represent the people, businesses and community organizations of this riding.” Srivastava has never shied away from pursuing demanding and difficult goals. She earned her degree in the male-dominated field of engineering and has made a successful career in the highly competitive high tech sector. Before starting her own consulting business, she held senior positions at Blackberry and led projects for Department of National Defence and Nortel.
However, Srivastava said it has been volunteer work that she says “feeds her soul” and gives her the most pleasure and satisfaction. She has actively worked with a number of cultural, educational, sports, political and community groups. She is the founder of a local non-profit performing arts group and former school council chair at John McCrae Secondary School. “Supporting and giving back to my community is extremely important to me,” she said, “and this is one of the main reasons I decided to run for political office.” Srivastava has lived in the riding for nearly 20 years with her husband and has two teenage children, aged 16 and 14. “Nepean has been my home since coming to Canada, where I raised my family and
established social and community connections,” she said. “I understand the opportunities and challenges faced by the residents. Natural Food Pantry celebrates opening of its unique Barrhaven store Café, in-store bakery and teaching kitchen make Strandherd Road location unlike any other
Natural Food Pantry is celebrating 37 years of service to its customers in Ottawa with the Grand Opening of their newest and largest location at 4325 Strandherd in Barrhaven. This store opening brings the number of locations to four, including Kanata, Billings Bridge and Westboro. The store celebrated its grand opening in late March and hosted seven guest speakers, including Kathy Smart, Rachael Caven RHN, Lori Preshing RHN, Dr Andrea Proulx ND, Lisa J Weiss, Sarah Roberts and Natural Food Pantry’s own Natasha Villeneuve CNP. The Barrhaven store presents a whole new concept for Natural Food Pantry with its first café and in-store bakery. Most exciting is the introduction of their prepared meals by their in-house Chef, Bruce Enloe. Bruce was involved with the Two River’s Food Hub and focusses on local and sustainable food sourcing. Plans also include an education classroom/ teaching kitchen and hot and cold food bar. Natural Food Pantry offers a diverse array of products including: gluten free items, vegan-diabetic friendly products, bulk foods, supplements, organic meats, books, organic produce, natural
body care, sports supplements, herbs, homeopathy, specialty food gourmet products and much more. Products are always fresh and ever evolving. Bowled over by community support for the QCH We all know Jan Harder as our hard-working, fight-for-the-community City Councillor. On Saturday evening, however, she grabbed a bowling ball at Merivale Lanes and was not Councillor Harder, but she was a team member of the Pin Bowl Wizards. Appropriately, she kicked off the second annual Spare A Night for QCH bowling fundraiser with a strike. “She doesn’t do anything half way,” joked Jason MacDonald of the MacDonald-Moussa Team, who organized the event. Jason MacDonald and Nim Moussa have been strong supporters of community initiatives for several years, but the bowling tournament is becoming their signature event. “Nim and I try to do an awful lot in the community, because the community has given us a great business,” said MacDonald, who added that Barrhaven is also the home to their families. Harder – excuse the pun – got the ball rolling for QCH when she announced her initiative to raise a significant amount of money for the QCH several years ago. MacDonald approached her and asked what he and Moussa could do to help. They talked for several months, and then came up with an idea. “The MacDonald-Moussa Team is about fun,” he said. “What can we do that’s fun? We thought about bowling. It’s simple, it’s easy, fun, it’s not weather-dependent. Last year, we raised more than $10,000. This year, we more than doubled that.” This year, the event sold out in BARRHAVEN
four days. They had 24 teams, but MacDonald said there could have easily been 50 teams. “Next year, the event will be bigger,” he said, determined to double the participation. “We also had some great sponsors, including every major home builder in the community.” As President of the Barrhaven BIA, MacDonald’s focus has been on growing the business community and attracting large-scale careerlevel employment to the Barrhaven. But Barrhaven will always be a community, and events such as the Spare A Night for QCH fundraiser help keep the community strong. A symbol of support for the community of Humboldt My hockey stick has been leaning against the wall in the garage, untouched and gathering dust all winter. Yet, last night, I felt compelled – maybe urged – to lean it by the front door. Maybe you did the same thing. It’s a grass roots movement that started in Humboldt and spread quickly throughout Canada this week. We all feel horrible, and we all want to do something to show we care. The Humboldt tragedy hit close to home for anyone who has ever been on a school bus, had a child on a school bus, or has ever had a child on a team or in a band. Simply put, it hit us all, and it taught us all about how fragile life is. You probably did what I did when you heard the horrible news of the truck-bus accident that killed 15 members of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. We all thought, and we all reflected. Our inner voices will try to calm us down and tell us that tragedies like this only happen to other people in other places. But in reality, they happen everywhere. Sometimes, the tragedies involve teams. We think back to the Swift Current Broncos hockey team in 1986. Four players were killed in a bus crash after their bus hit some black ice on Saskatchewan Highway 1. We think of the 2011 plane crash in Russia that killed the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team in the KHL. We think of the 1970 Marshall University football team that lost 37 players when their plane slammed into a hill. We take the ride to and from hockey games for granted. In fact, we never even consider that we may be unsafe when we get into a car, a bus, or on a plane. One of the things I thought about was an incident five years ago, while I was in my last year of semi-pro football with the Ottawa Invaders. Our bus was heading home from a game at about 2 a.m. when our bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. We were jolted awake by the loud vibrations from hitting the rumble strip and looked out the front of the bus to see us swerving all over the 401. It made for a good humour column. But this week, thinking back to that incident scares the bejesus out of me. When there are numerous lives lost in a tragedy, we are hit harder. That’s natural. But a tragedy doesn’t have to involve a team or even multiple people. It can just be one person, and it can be in a car rather than in a bus.
At the foot of my father’s grave lies the gravesite a young boy named Dasan Munro. I cry for him every time I visit the site, and I always ask my father to look after him in Heaven. In my heart, I know that my dad has been making sure that the little boy is not alone or afraid. Dasan was a 10-year-old boy who was FROM THE killed in a car accident on the way home from an Atom hockey game. The crash happened a few hundred metres from where I grew up, by Jeff Morris and it happened along the St. Lawrence River in front of the spot where we used to make a rink and play hockey. Although it was one boy killed and not 15, the impact of Dasan Munro’s passing hit South Grenville just as hard as the Broncos tragedy is hitting Humboldt. And what the families of that tragedy have been going through is probably no different than what the Munro family has been dealing with. A lot of tragedies that hit us hard don’t involve teams or groups, or even buses. As I watched the memorial service from Humboldt, my thoughts drifted back to Columbine and the pain that was felt in that community. On the day of that tragedy, I was in Columbine with a realtor looking at houses. I was working in Denver and was planning a move there. We saw helicopters fill the sky and people on the streets hugging and crying. When we returned to my office, our entire staff of 25 was huddled around a radio and crying. A couple of my co-workers lost family members in that shooting. In time, the world moved on, but how could they? We try to comfort ourselves by saying that the victims are ‘in a better place.’ I remember one of the last things my father said to me. “I’m ready,” he told me. “I’m excited to see what happens next.” My father passed away that night. But I think he waited to die until he was able to talk to me, and to make sure I wouldn’t worry or be upset. Last week, we were all saddened when Jonathan Pitre passed away. If God had ever created a perfect soul, it was his. Jonathan’s biggest fear before he passed away was how his mother would cope with the loss. Maybe that’s the lesson we can take from of all of these tragedies. We fear death, but maybe the thing we fear most is the pain and heartbreak for those we will leave behind. As far as Humboldt goes, all we can do is pray and show our support – and maybe put a hockey stick by the front door to let them know we are thinking about them.

What do you enjoy reading for pleasure? “I’m a huge reader, but I don’t always have the time to do so. When I’m reading it’s most likely historical fiction, or something more contemporary. I like a book that makes me think about current issues, or keeps me at the edge of my seat. I also really like autobiographies, or anything related to true-crime.” Who is your favourite author? “An author that has rarely disappointed me is Jodi Picoult. Her books are really gripping and tackle the issues of family, relationships, and society as a whole rather candidly. Her most recent book, “Small Great Things”, is her best work in my opinion.

If you’re rushing to make it to a movie, let the server know that time is of the essence so service can be expedited. If you prefer to lounge, ask to be seated in an outof-the way spot. 3. Only signal the server when you’re ready to order. Do not call the server over if you need to continue perusing the menu. 4. Be courteous to the server and fellow customers. It is important for all customers to wait their turn and avoid interrupting waiters when they are taking other customers’ orders. In addition, allow servers to mention the specials before ordering. 5. Alert staff to food allergies when ordering so that the kitchen can be notified that a special order will be coming in. This enables everyone to be

prepared and reduces the risk of someone getting sick. 6. If something is not right with the meal, mention it early so it can be remedied. Do not eat an entire meal before filing a complaint with the server. 7. Recognize that servers have nothing to do with the wait time for a table. Do not take your frustration out on the server if it takes awhile before you’re seated. 8. Clean up after yourself and children. If your party makes a big mess or a child gets sick or spills something, make an effort to clean up the table. 9. Consider the bigger picture when deciding what to leave as a tip. Servers have no control over the quality of the food, wait times or even the atmosphere. Take up issues with the management and make sure the tip reflects the job done by the server.

When complaints come across my desk or are called in, Richcraft enlists the help of Paterson Group to monitor the vibrations coming from the roadwork and heavy work that has been scheduled. This is just the beginning of this project and soon the site will be a beehive of activity that will cause further disruptions to the neighbourhood. Richcraft has promised me that they will do their best to mitigate disruptions and respond to any issues and/ or complaints. Our Spring Open House has been cancelled as the planning applications we wanted to showcase are not ready yet for public input, however Strandherd application will be ready in May, stay tuned. On the outside, Barrhaven may look like a mecca for big box stores and chains. But for every Walmart, Canadian Tire or Home Depot, there are dozens upon dozens of small and home-based businesses in the community. Barrhaven native Kelly Beck has built his practice on helping small and home-based businesses in the community. His accounting and tax practice, Kelly Beck, Ltd., has helped many local small and home-based businesses flourish in the community. “If you have a small business, my value proposition is to let you do what you do, and be really good at it,” he said. “Let me figure out the back end of it.” Beck graduated from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa with an hon-
ours degree in business commerce, specialization in accounting. His degree follows a business administration diploma from Algonquin College. As a result of a background in finance prior to accounting the areas of cash flow and budgeting remain in the forefront of discussions and planning with clients. “I ask a lot of questions,” he said. “I look at the whole picture and look at how you benefit.” As a business person, Beck knows and understands the community, He grew up in Barrhaven, went to Barrhaven Public School and Cedarview Middle School before going to high school at Confederation. He was part of the last class of Barrhaven students at Confederation before John McCrae
opened its doors in the community. “As a student, and putting myself through college, I became really good at finance at a personal level,” he said. “Eventually, I went into finance, and began to focus on a lot of the bigger picture stuff, like strategy and planning.” Beck said that there is a multitude of small businesses in the community, and he enjoys working with them. “A lot of people have home-based businesses, they are self-employed, or they have a job and a small business on the side to make extra income,” he said. “Those are the people we can really help.” To use a cliché, Beck works on the business for them, so that they can focus on working in their business. “I like to work with our clients and get to know what their goals are,” he said. “I want to know what their business goals are, and to try to make sure they align with their personal goals. New police station by Carleton Lodge to serve Barrhaven, Riverside South communities In October 2017, Ottawa Police presented plans for the South Campus Master Plan, which will be located at 55 Lodge Road. This new police station will serve the south end and ultimately replace the current locations at Greenbank and Leitrim. Phase 1 of this facility is scheduled to be completed in 2021, with construction starting in late 2019. The funding for phase 1 and the architecture group was approved at the Ottawa Police Services Board on March 27th, 2018. The site plan approval
process will take place later this year. Phase 2 is expected to be completed just a few years later in 2023. There will be a public consultation in Spring 2018, in order to allow residents to see the proposed plans and provide their feedback. I will keep residents informed on a date for the public consultation and any other information as it becomes available.

The Home Alone Program is designed to provide children 10 years of age and older with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods. It will help them understand how to prevent problems, handle real-life situations, and keep them sage and constructively occupied. Enhanced Green Bin Program
City Council recently approved an enhanced green bin program. Start-
ing in mid-2019 dog waste and plastic bags will now be allowed in green bins. This will address concerns about odours and pests in green bins moving forward. This will also help to divert more waste, helping to extend the life of the Trail Road landfill and to meet new provincial targets for waste diversion.

Everyone’s looking toward that opening day no more than we are,” says Gib Patterson, owner of Emerald Links Golf & Country Club, one of about five public golf courses only a short drive away from Barrhaven. “We know from our experience we’ll be open around the middle of April, says Patterson. It’s all about the weather. All about the sunshine.” Over at Stonebridge Golf Club, director of golf Joe Warner says the course appears coming out of winter in great shape. “We have special spring rates from opening until mid-May, and will be
unveiling a new menu (in 2018)” adds Warner. “That includes our famous Fish n’ Chip Fridays. Which tends to draw a large crowd.” Stonebridge, along with Cedarhill and Emerald Links, all say they expect to open soon, if not this weekend, probably next week. For the past 28 summers, Patterson has not only been growing greens, but also trying to grow the game. “Golf courses aren’t so much in competition with each other, but with the economy and all the other things people can do with their time and money,” explains Patterson.
