A big night for the Barrhaven Independent at provincial newspaper awards Special to the Barrhaven Independent MARKHAM -- In a ballroom in Markham filled with Ontario’s top community newspaper publishers, journalists, photographers and designers, it was the Barrhaven Independent and Manotick Messenger that came away as the big winners. The sister publications won three Ontario Community Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Competition awards and placed second in a fourth category. The awards were given out at the annual OCNA Awards Gala, held in Markham Friday. “We are a small, family business with only two full time employees and a handful of part time employees and contributors,” said Jeff Morris, the editor and publisher
of the Independent and the Messenger. “The incredible support from the community and our readers enables us to produce a newspaper that is on par with some of the biggest and best publications in Ontario.” Morris won the 2017 Stephen Shaw Award as the province’s Reporter of the Year. He had previously won the award in 2008 and was a finalist in 2010. Todd Vandonk of Peterborough This Week was second, while Kim Zarzour of the Richmond Hill/Thornhill Liberal was third. Morris said his award was a reflection of the community support he mentioned. “It’s presented as an individual award, but it really is a community award,” he said. “We get a lot of tips and direction from our readers, and from our photographer,
Mike Carroccetto. In 2017, we had a few incredible stories that were presented to us. There is a lot of luck involved.” Two stories that appeared in the Independent won provincial awards. One was story on how MPP Lisa MacLeod’s Private Members Bill on funding for exceptional situations will help a Barrhaven family with two children fighting unrelated cases of cancer. It was selected out of 73 stories as the best health and wellness story in the province. Another story on workers at a new home near Prince of Wales and Bankfield who unearthed human remains while building a deck won the award for the province’s best news story. Morris wanted a fresh angle on the story, and tied it to a missing high school student
who went missing in the area in 1994. When he questioned the police on scene, they were unaware of the teenager who had been missing for more than two decades. Forensic tests confirmed that the remains did, in fact, belong to the missing student. In addition to the three first place awards, the Manotick Messenger earned a second place award for best arts and entertainment story for a feature on Manotick dancer Deirdre Barnes. She is part of Britney Spears’ Las Vegas Show, and was also a dancer on the Justin Bieber “Believe” Tour and she has been on Dancing With the Stars. She took a week off to return home to Manotick and help the young dancers at the Denise Smith School of Dance, where she grew up learning to dance.

Almaguin News, Mississauga News and New Hamburg Independent won two each.

Ford tells local Tories he will eliminate tax for minimum wage earners The ice storm did not stop Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford from rolling up to the Nepean Sportsplex on his new campaign bus, for his first campaignstyle rally in Ottawa. On Monday April 16, about 700 Ottawa Conservatives packed the Nepean Sportsplex for a rally held by Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod, who has represented the community at Queen’s Park for the past 12 years. Some keynote politicians, both past and present, were in attendance. They included former Mayor of Ottawa Larry O’Brien, Deputy Leader of the Federal Conservatives Lisa Raitt, and Former Government Leader of the Senate, Marjory LeBreton. This was Ford’s first rally in Ottawa since being elected leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives on March 10. He said the Nepean event was the largest and loudest crowd he has ever seen. The new Ontario PC leader took the opportunity to bash the Wynne Government, and re-
assured supporters that she will be out of office come June. “Over the last 15 years, we have seen this province get destroyed,” Ford food the crowd. “We have watched our debt grow 300 per cent to the largest national debt in the entire world.” One of the main points that came up during the 20-minute rally was the cost of Hydro. Earlier on in the day, Ford was in Orleans where he said he spoke to a woman who told him she was unable to pay her hydro bill or rent. “My heart breaks when I hear people like that because they’re struggling,” said Ford. He added that he would fire the CEO of Hydro One, who made $4.85 million last year in salary and benefits. Ford also promised that if elected, his Government would not charge tax on minimum wage workers who earn less than $30,000 a year. “The liberals decided to put (the minimum wage) up to 14$ (an hour), but what they don’t realize (is that) people on minimum wage are getting gouged with taxes,”
Lisa MacLeod and other PC candidates helped welcome Doug Ford to Nepean, where the new Ontario PC leader made an campaign-style stop at the Sportsplex on April 16. Mike Carroccetto photo
said Ford. “The common sense approach is let’s help the most vulnerable people in our society.” Last week Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne was in Nepean at Tailgators Bar and Grill in Merivale Mall for the launching of Bob Chiarelli’s campaign. They both took jabs at MacLeod, and held up a brochure that MacLeod has been handing out at the doors saying she has helped open 20 schools since being elected into Queen’s Park in 2006.

“(Lisa MacLeod) may have cut the ribbon, but Kathleen Wynne delivered the cheque,” said Chiarelli. During the rally, Mac-
Leod acknowledged the comments Chiarelli made, and said that the Liberals are getting scared leading up to the June 7, election. She added
that Ford’s crowd size was much bigger. About 100 people attended Chiarelli’s campaign launch on April 7, compared to 700 at Ford’s.

Dear residents of Humboldt, Even though it may feel like the world has moved on from the horrible thing you are still dealing with, they haven’t. We are telling you this because we have been there. We are Barrhaven. We have seen as much tragedy in this young century as any community in Canada. So when we say our hearts are with you, believe us. They are. More than you would know. Let’s start with Jennifer Teague. She was just a teenage kid when she was abducted and murdered while walking home from her bus stop after her shift at Wendy’s. It shocked us all. It changed our community, peeling a thick layer of innocence from our day-to-day lives. We felt the same way many of you do. It could have been my kid. It could have been your kid. Since then, it just seems like we have been hit with tragedy after tragedy. Maddy Otto, a little girl who was going into kindergarten and loved to wear super hero costumes, was stricken down just two days after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. High School student Kyle Schober died of testicular cancer. Michael Swan was shot dead by intruders in front of his girlfriend over a bag of weed and some cash. Cisco Williams, a promising basketball player, crashed his car into a pole and died just hours after writing his last high school exam. A third MTHS student, Junior B hockey player Eric Leighton, would die following an explosion in shop class. And you may have heard BARRHAVEN
of the concussion legislation called Rowan’s Law. Rowan Stringer was a high school rugby player from Barrhaven who died after suffering a head injury during a game here. And if all that wasn’t enough, then we had our bus crash. A double decker bus filled with students and commuters slammed through the gates and was T-boned by a VIA rail train. Six were dead, many were injured, and a community was left in shock. It was the emotional knockout punch after a decade of body blows to our souls. But we’re still here. Each one of those tragedies – and there were more that weren’t mentioned – hit us hard. But they made us stronger. They made us hug our children more, smile at strangers on the sidewalk more, and they have brought us together as a community. As a community, you will grow abnormally strong. You will never forget, even when it feels like the rest of Canada has moved on. Last week, almost everyone in Barrhaven wore hockey jerseys to support you. Families still have hockey sticks outside their front doors to show support. If a town could actually hug another town, we would be hugging you. So, Humboldt, all we can do is let you know that the thoughts and prayers of everyone in this community are with you. Every black cloud has a silver lining, and the strength of your community will eventually be yours. We are thinking of you. With warmth and friendship, The people of Barrhaven

lEGal SERVICES Q: “I need the money for other priorities and I can save for my RRSP in the future” – does this sound familiar? A: The battle between spending for current
needs/wants and saving for the future is an ongoing struggle for many people, and often an obstacle for clients in their younger years. It is harder for younger people to michelle Perry put retirement into perspective and make B.A.,LL.B. it a priority until they have someone close to them who is in that stage of their life. For example, when you see your parents in their late sixties and how they are handling retirement you might finally ask yourself “Do I have enough money in my RRSP?” With so many other demands on young families, such as mortgage payments, your children’s education etc, saving for retirement often falls to third or fourth place. Knowing what kind of lifestyle you want to maintain during your retirement years helps people visualize their needs and helps highlight how their current savings rate falls short with the future they would like to have. ‘If not for this man and his generosity, I would not be here’ Barrhaven resident ‘Stuntman Stu’ reflects on meeting the Israeli bone marrow donor who saved his life From the Canadian Jewish News Two years ago, Barrhaven resident Stuart Schwartz was already well known in the Ottawa area as the popular host of the Majic 100 morning radio show, as well as the home game announcer for the Ottawa Senators. Stuntman Stu, as he is known, also appears at many local community events and charity fundraisers. So he had the support of a large fan base, in addition to his own family and friends, when he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2016 and chose to share both his diagnosis and his journey publicly. When, after undergoing aggressive treatment, it became apparent that Schwartz would need a bone marrow transplant – and soon – his medical team searched both locally and across Canada for a match, but none was found. They then reached out to Ezer Mizion, a non-profit organization that manages the largest international bone marrow registry, and found a perfect match. David Levi, a 50-year-old Israeli tour company manager from Yahud, Israel, had almost forgotten the day, nearly a decade earlier, when his older sister had convinced him to go along when she registered to be a bone marrow donor. They had both given DNA sam-
ples that were kept in the “bank,” one of which was matched to Schwartz. “After a few weeks, she told me I am a perfect match and asked if I would be a donor,” said Levi. He answered immediately that he would. “I didn’t even ask my wife before I said ‘yes,’ because I felt that it is my body and my decision,” he said. The process of donating was, according to Levi, very easy and painless. First, he had daily injections for four days “to grow the white blood cells.” On the fifth day, he went to the hospital and was hooked up to a machine for about 6½ hours to extract his bone marrow. Two days later, the transplant took place. “I asked them not to tell me about the patient. The only thing I wanted to know was whether it was successful,” said Levi. It was successful. Schwartz’s life was saved and he wanted to meet the donor, so he asked Ezer Mizion to arrange a meeting. Urged by his wife to agree to the get together because it might encourage other people to become donors, Levi gave his consent and allowed Ezer Mizion to facilitate the reunion. At the Ottawa airport on March 19, the emotional encounter took place between Schwartz and Levi, two men who under any other circumstance would probably never have met,
ROOFING
but are now connected by their shared DNA. They embraced and each one called the other a hero. The following evening, Schwartz took Levi and his family (his wife and two children accompanied him on the trip) to an Ottawa Senators game. “The game was overwhelming,” said Schwartz. “They gave a standing ovation for both of us at the game.” The men plan to keep in touch and Schwartz, who has never been to Israel, is hoping to visit the country with his family sometime soon. He also is hoping that their story will encourage people to register to become donors. He has partnered with Ezer Mizion to create Stu’s Pool, a dedicated pool of donors who financially sponsor bone marrow testing. “If you have any hesitation, look at me,” said Schwartz. “I am alive today because of this man and this organization. If not for

LDHSS student channels ‘fear and anger’ into school play I could no longer see what was happening behind my back. That is scarier than anything that might be said to my face. Over the four months of rehearsal we spent on the show, my cast members and I worked hard to provide a realistic portrayal of many aspects of bullying in hopes of creating conversation to recognize and end all types of bullying. Social media isn’t another world: it’s just an extension of our own. Sam Pomerant is a Grade 11 student at Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School. He played the part of Aaron Kendall.

Just months before marijuana is legalized in Canada, a Barrhaven teen is speaking from personal experience about pot, and why it should be more easily accessible. Emma Boniface says her mother, Genevieve Gendron, has Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a debilitating type of arthritis that affects the spine, and includes pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Boniface was one of the keynote speakers last Friday during the annual 4/20 pot rally on Parliament Hill, and at just the age of 14. She even helped with the countdown to 4:20 p.m. “She was prescribed a lot of opioids, including fentanyl,” said Boniface, a Grade 9 student, of her mother. Fentanyl is a synthetic drug 75 times more potent than morphine, and usually prescribed as a pain medication. “When mom cut opi-
oids cold turkey, cannabis was there to help,” she said. “It’s what really brought her back to life.” Boniface said it was important for her to speak at this year’s 4/20 rally because youth are the ones who are going to be most impacted by the legalization of marijuana. She feels the government is only legalizing marijuana for profit and tax revenue. Boniface is concerned that only four cannabis dispensaries will be opened in Ontario, with the closest being in Kingston. Boniface does not yet use cannabis, but she plans to start using it after she’s of legal age. Organizers of the 4/20 rally in Ottawa say they are thinking of planning a protest at the government run cannabis dispensary in Kingston once it opens. “The reason why Canadians want to get cannabis legalized is so people who need it can get it,” said Boniface. “How are Ottawa residents supposed to get

I was very intrigued when, months ago, I first read the script for our school play: The Bullying Collection. In the past I have experienced bullying, and I decided to put the feelings of fear and anger -- and all my energy -- into my character on stage. Like most of my friends, I would scroll through my social media feeds and often see exaggerated stories or falsehoods about myself. So, last year, because I was a victim of cyber-bullying, I decided to delete my Instagram account.
Everywhere we turn, you hear a lot about cyber-bullying on social media. It’s the most popular first world problem. The common suggestion is that we should turn off our phones. In theory that might work, but cyber-bullying is still a collection of mean comments. Online bullying is often very subtle, however. After I had deleted the app, the word got out. According to my friends, the bullying has continued. Turning off my phone did absolutely nothing. Attempting to walk away from this problem didn’t solve it. All it meant was that

DINING OUT g n i r The art of making friends u t a e F
The importance of friends cannot be overstated. Maintaining a healthy group of friends can help relieve stress by enabling a person to have a go-to network of close companions with whom to share the ups and downs of life. The Mayo Clinic says that friends can increase one’s sense of belonging and purpose; help one cope with trauma; encourage change and help one improve his or her self-confidence and selfworth. The medical group also says that people with strong social support systems have a reduced risk of depression, high blood pressure and unhealthy weights. While friends are important, some people find that making new friends — particularly in adulthood — can
be challenging. That’s because making friends may not be too great a priority compared to caring for families or tending to work responsibilities. Those resolving to broaden their social circles can explore these tips for making new friends. • Start at school. School is often the first place children make friends, but school also can be a great place for adults to meet new people. By attending school functions, you will be thrust into a circle of people similar to you. Parents who get to know their childrens’ friends’ parents may find that they have more in common than just their children. • Join groups. Kids find it easy to make friends due to consistency. They see the same kids each day at school

and through sports teams and clubs. Adults can replicate this consistency by joining groups that spark their interests, finding like-minded people who meet week after week. • Go on a blind “date.” Have a friend set you up with a mutual friend and see if there is a connection there. You may be able to make new friends simply from an introduction. • Take the lead. Pursue a new friendship by taking some initiative. Invite someone out for coffee or over to your home for a glass of wine. Follow up afterward to say you had a good time. • Be positive. Be conscious of what you are adding to a potential friendship. Start off the relationship adding value and joy to the other person’s life, and he or she may be more

inclined to do the same. Over time, you can have conversations about rough patches in your lives but wait until the friendship is firmly established to get so serious. There is no magic number of friends a person should have, but individuals should value quality over quantity. Making friends may seem

complicated, but it is actually easier than adults may think when they put themselves out there and shows a willingness to build relationships. • Go to an interesting or fun place that will allow everyone to relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life, it’s always easier to be yourself when you are relaxed.

Over the past few years, Barrhaven has become a destination for foodies. There are a number of outstanding restaurants with a variety of styles in the community. And for those who may not feel like going to a restaurant, there are some great take out options. One of those is Karara Indian Takeout at 4100 Strandherd Drive. The Barrhaven Karara is one of four in Ottawa. When Karara opened its first restaurant in 2009, the idea was simple: make food to enjoy with family at home, show that Indian food served in takeout style without having a “fastfood” touch. Using highquality raw ingredients, classic cooking techniques with natural spices and herbs, they brought features from the realm of fine dining to the world of quickservice restaurants. Over the years, their devotion to finding the very best ingredients

Top home improvement tips (NC) Summer is one of the best times to focus on outdoor home improvement projects that deliver the greatest return on your investment. “While there are many renovation options available to homeowners, not all are created equal,” explains Brad Johnstone, broker of record for the Royal LePage Niagara Real Estate Centre. “Some improvements help bolster
your property’s resale value more than others, so before you invest your time and money, be sure the project will pay off in the long run.” In order to receive the best bang for your buck, Johnstone recommends these three outdoor improvement tips: 1. Build a deck or patio. A new deck or patio is a great way to add a focal point to any backyard. Not only
do these structures add to a property’s visual appeal, but they also provide homeowners with the means to enjoy their outdoor living space to the fullest. During the summer months, a patio is a great place to entertain guests, barbecue, and enjoy leisure time with friends and family. Whatever your motivation, a deck or patio will encourage you to get out and enjoy the summer, all while
adding a healthy amount to your property’s bottom line. 2. Install a sprinkler system. On average, homeowners use 50 per cent more water than necessary on their lawns, adding to their monthly bills and causing their grounds to flood. Automatic lawn sprinklers are an easy way to avoid this as they are designed with busy lifestyles in mind. Although installation can be costly, you
may save money in the long run. 3. Landscape your yard. Landscaping is one of the best ways to add visual interest to your outdoor living space for a relatively small fee. Whether you choose to garden or install a built-in fixture like a pond, beautifying your backyard is a great way to create an attractive and serene environment that builds your home’s equity.

‘I just want to enjoy every moment I can with my kids’ 28-year-old mother of three focuses on her family and tries to be positive as she battles ALS
By Jeff Morris Stephanie Hall takes a second to reflect on her situation. “Twenty-eight-yearold women aren’t supposed to be diagnosed with ALS,” she said. “But here I am.” Despite her illness, Hall will be hosting the Party With a Purpose ALS Dinner and Benefit Concert featuring a popular Montreal band, the Cranes. The fundraiser takes place May 12 from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Orchard View Wedding and Event Centre, 6346 Deermeadow Drive in Manotick Station. The fundraiser will be in memory of Cecil Landon of Barrhaven, an ALS sufferer who passed away in November, just 10 months after being diagnosed. The Cranes were one of Landon’s favourite bands. When Landon was in his final stages of ALS before his passing, members of the band went to his home and played some of his favourite songs outside his window. “The fundraiser is not for me,” Hall quickly said. “It’s a fundraiser for ALS research and to help other people. I wanted to do something for research so that it might help find a cure so that another family won’t have to go through what we are going through.” Hall’s diagnosis was delivered to her on Oct. 17, 2017, after what she said was a year of appointments with her family doctor and a number of specialists. For Stephanie, and her husband, Nick, the news was devastating. “We had never even considered ALS,” she said. “It started out as cramping in my legs. To be told that I had ALS was a shock to say the least.” Known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis is a motor neuron disease that destroys the links to the nervous system. This disease will eventually impact her ability to walk, speak, eat and breath. There is currently no cure. “We didn’t really know anything about the disease,” Hall said. “We had heard of it, and we knew about the ice bucket challenges from a few years ago, but we didn’t really know what it would mean as far as day-to-day challenges go.” Although Stephanie and Nicholas and their extended family is planning for the worst, she is also trying to live in the moment as much as possible. In January, Stephanie and Nick took their three children to Disney World. For Stephanie, it was a chance to do everything fun with her kids to create happy memories for them. She and Nick both know that, as time progresses, happy memories will play an important role in the lives of their children, Riley, Caden and Hunter, who range in age from five to seven. Breaking the news of her diagnosis to her children was one of the toughest things that Hall has ever had to do. “They don’t understand a lot of what it means,” she said. “They are just little. They know that I have ALS, and they know that I need more help to do things. Every day, I just try to stay positive especially for them. We don’t know what the future holds.” Hall has a strong network of supporters and specialists, and she is also in touch with other ALS sufferers in the Ottawa area. “Those connections are important,” she said. “Sometimes it’s good to talk to other people that are going through similar
challenges. Sometimes, though, I just want to keep to myself and be alone.” The Halls have moved to Osgoode to live with Nick’s parents, Perry and Carole. Stephanie’s medication costs $4,000 every three months, and they are not covered under any health insurance plan. There will also be additional costs for the family as Nick will have to take more time off work to be with his wife and children, and also for the cost of caregivers. The family has a Go Fund Me page to help
with their expenses. The page is at www.gofundme.com/stephaniechristiansen. “We are very fortunate to have had support from the community,” she said. “I hope people will support the ALS community. ALS affects more people in the community than you would think. I hope people can come to the fundraiser as well.” The Facebook and Event Bright sites for tickets and information on the fundraiser can be found on Google by entering ‘Party with a purpose ALS.’
Stephanie Hall poses for a photo with her three children. The local 28-year-old woman was diagnosed with ALS in October.

Great job by Hydro Ottawa workers after unexpected ice storm Who would have expected an ice storm in April - specifically April 15 – 17? Certainly not Hydro Ottawa and yet 72,000 customers were affected. There were 200 incidents, 33,900 calls handled and over 35 poles were broken... yikes! As you may know I serve on the Board of Hydro Ottawa. This took an incredible amount of collaboration from all Hydro Ottawa employees... great job everyone! Canada Day seems like a long way off but it isn’t, time passes swiftly and will a lot faster once the nice weather arrives and we can get out and garden! Darrell and his team need our help so if you see invitations for fundraisers for MattamyHomes Canada Day in Barrhaven please do support these events as you can. It takes over $100k to host our Canada Day, that’s no small amount of money. Thanks to MattamyHomes, for without their financial support there is not one chance we would have a Canada Day here in Barrhaven. Guess who is playing at this year’s event?

Barrhaven’s Evraire takes on head coaching job with Sooners’ NFC entry “Looking forward to what will be an exciting journey,” said Evraire. As a player, Evraire played for the Ottawa Sooners before moving on to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. He was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and played for nine seasons in the CFL for Ottawa, Saskatchewan and Hamilton. He was a CFL All-Star in 1992. Evraire was the head coach for the Invaders in their first three years. He guided them to the NFC final in 2011 and 2012, but came up on the short end both times in losses to the Tri-City Outlaws in Kitchener-Waterloo and to Montreal in 2012. Ken Evraire was the coach of the Ottawa Invaders of the Northern Football Conference from 201012, reaching the championship game twice. The former CFLer coached the Nepean Eagles tykes last year, but has rejoined Ottawa’s NFC entry as coach of the new Ottawa Sooners. Skylan Hill photo

Barrhaven’s Ken Evriare is back doing what he loves. Evraire, a long time CFL receiver and local football coach, has been named the head coach of the Ottawa Sooners’ new senior Northern Football Conference club. The announcement was made by Ottawa Sooners Club President, John Allarie. “We are pleased to welcome Ken Evraire to the Ottawa Sooners Football Club,” said Allarie. “Ken’s history with the Ottawa Invaders inaugural year and his experience as a professional player made him our first choice to be head coach. Ken has also coached minor football, and he has a great reputation in the football community.” Evraire was introduced as the head coach during the Sooners NFC Team Meet and Greet that was held on April 15th at the Ottawa Sooners Club House across Bronson Road from Carleton University.
