High school talent showcased at annual Cappies Awards
Scrooged!
St. Mother Teresa High School student Rob Kemp is one of the many Barrhaven high school actors, actresses and support people nominated for a Cappies Award. Kemp, who is nominated for best lead actor for his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge in the SMTHS production of A Christmas Carol, made the difficult decision of giving up high school football in favour of the school Cappies play. For the full story, see page 7. Mike Carroccetto photo
The red carpet will be rolled out for local high school actors, actresses, dancers, singers and technical support people as the Cappies Gala takes place at the National Arts Centre Sunday evening. Twenty-four Ottawa and area high schools took part in this year’s Cappies program, which is a partnership with the Ottawa Citizen, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, and the Ottawa Catholic School Board. The four winners of the lead acting categories will receive a bursary provided by the international law firm Gowling WLG Canada LLP. NDP selects IT expert Zaff Ansari as provincial election candidate for Nepean By Charlie Senack Barrhaven Independent The provincial election is just a few weeks away, and the NDP party has chosen Zaff Ansari as their candidate for Nepean. Ansari has lived in the riding for the past 10 years, and has raised his four children in the Barrhaven area. He is an IT entrepreneur, and has a Masters degree in Computer Science. While hitting the doors of Nepean over the past few weeks, Ansari said he has encountered many residents who are tired of the Liberal Government being in power for the past 15 years — and said they would like to see Light Rail Transit be extended out into the Barrhaven community. “This is a dream for a lot of Barrhaven people for a long time,” he said. “Even I have been waiting for it.” Ontario NDP Leader
Andrea Horwath was in Ottawa over the Victoria Day long weekend, and promised that the second phase of LRT would go ahead as planned — saying the NDP were to form Government. The second phase includes the Trillium Line being extended out to Limebank Road which will help serve the residents of Riverside South. “There are things that the Liberals have done that we’re going to stick with because they are things that we agree with,” Horwath said in Ottawa on May 20. “But there are many, many things we don’t agree with that need to be fixed.” Ansari also talked about the opioid epidemic that has hit Ottawa in recent years, and said he would push the elected government to catch the dealers who are trafficking these illicit drugs over to Canada. “I’m with the families who are affected,” he said.
“(Opioids) is a prescription medicine but it has been used in the black market and (dealers are) adding fentanyl which is killing the people.” Ansari would also like to see more busses travel through Barrhaven — an issue he experienced with his daughter while she was attending Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School. He is also supportive with the NDP’s platform on lowering hydro rates by 30 per cent, and have universal medical and dental plans. The riding of Nepean is currently held by Lisa MacLeod who has been the elected MPP for the riding for the past 12 years. She has recently introduced a bill to Queens Park labelled Nick Law which would take 10 per cent of the provincial government’s marketing budget — and put it towards opioid education and awareness. Saying she is re-elected, she is confident the bill will be

Federal Government, City of Ottawa announce funding The Chapman Mills Transit Corridor is one of 50 infrastructure projects in Ottawa that has received federal funding. The announcement was made jointly by MP Chandra Arya, Mayor Jim Watson and Councillor Michael Qaqish Thursday. The federal component of the project is $1.5 million, and falls under the $1.5 billion Public Transit Infrastructure Funding Program. The city component is $4.1 million.

“It has been a great partnership between the federal government and the city,” Arya said. Watson said the investment is an example of how a big city-wide investment can trickle down to the local level. “The $1.5 million investment in the transitway is making a big difference, and it will continue to make a big difference for those who live in Barrhaven and in the south end of the city,” T:5.063” he said.
Watson also commented that with the help of the funding, the city was also able to purchase 17 double decker buses which have been spread throughout the city. “We know that this is one of the fastest growing areas of the city, and we have to work hard with our other two levels of government to partner to make sure that we have the bus capacity, and ultimately rail capacity, to serve the community.”

The Government of Canada has reported that drug-impaired driving is on the rise in Canada since policereported data became available in 2009, and is a major contributor to fatal road crashes. And in about a month, it’s only going to get worse. The number and rate for almost all drug-impaired driving violations increased in 2016. In total there were 3,098 drug-impaired driving violations in 2016, 343 more than the previous year. Among Canadians who have used cannabis, 28% reported they have operated a vehicle while under the influence. Since July 2008, under the Criminal Code, police can perform compulsory roadside checks and assessments if they suspect a driver has drugs in their body. Failure to comply with the demand may result in criminal charges that carry the same penalty as driving while impaired. According to the Traffic Injury Research Foundation’s National Fatality Database, in 2000, almost 35% of fatally injured drivers tested positive for alcohol compared to 12% who tested positive for marijuana. By 2014, this percentage for alcohol had declined to 28% whereas it increased to almost 19% for marijuana. Young people continue to be the largest group of drivers who die in crashes and test positive for drugs. With drug-impaired driving on the rise in Canada, the Government of Canada is taking action to support increased training for law enforcement to detect and deter drug-impaired driving and keep Canadian roads safe. The Royal Canadian Mounted PoBARRHAVEN
lice (RCMP), in consultation with police services across Canada, has developed a new “Introduction to Drug-Impaired Driving” training curriculum for Canadian law enforcement to complement current Standard Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) training. The course is taken in person and includes training on the signs and symptoms of drug impairment on a driver, with a special emphasis on cannabis, and includes an overview of the characteristics of alcohol impairment, as well as information on impaired driving laws and medical conditions that can mimic drug impairment. All police officers receiving SFST training will now also receive the additional training. Police officers who had previously taken SFST training will have access to an online version of the “Introduction to Drug-Impaired Driving” course curriculum. Border Services Officers (BSO) from the Canada Border Services Agency will also receive SFST training, including the “Introduction to Drug-Impaired Driving” curriculum specifically tailored to the Agency’s mandate. This enhanced training will be standard for new BSOs deployed at land ports of entry. “Driving after using drugs, even some prescription drugs, is just as dangerous as drinking and driving,” said Brenda Lucki, RCMP Commissioner. “Everyone has a role to play in road safety. The RCMP is updating and expanding the training available to all Canadian police officers that will strengthen their ability to continue to detect drug impaired drivers. Let’s work together to keep Canadian roadways safe.” P.O. Box 567 Manotick, Ontario Tel: 613-692-6000 www.barrhavenindependent.ca

Rob Kemp is one of many Barrhaven students who have been nominated for Cappies Awards this year. Kemp’s make-up skills are as good as his acting skills. Above, Kemp is shown posing as Ebenezer Scrooge with his former Nepean Eagles teammate, Jose Soares Da Silva, who portrayed Bob Cratchit. He is also shown as a Nepean Eagles football player, and, right, he is made up as a monster for Halloween at the Watson’s Mill Haunt in Manotick.
The many faces of St. Mother Teresa’s Rob Kemp By Barrhaven Independent Staff St. Mother Teresa High School student Rob Kemp said it was a perfect situation for him. In fact, it was so perfect that it made one of the most difficult decisions of his high school life a nobrainer. For the past two years, Kemp had wrestled with the decision of playing high school football or being involved with the school’s Cappies play. Because both activities took up time after school in the fall, it had to be one or the other. At the end of the school year last June, Kemp was approached by St. Mother Teresa teacher Lindsay Laviolette, who asked him if he would be interested in playing the lead role of Ebenezer Scrooge in the school’s production of A Christmas Carol. “There could not have
been better news than that,” said Kemp. “That is like my dream role. I was thrilled. I got the script and studied my lines and the character throughout the summer.” Kemp had wrestled with the decision of drama vs. football the previous year. Kemp grew up playing for the Nepean Redskins and Nepean Eagles youth football teams. In his last season of minor football, he was selected to play in the National Capital Amateur Football Association Pee Wee AllStar Game as an offensive lineman. He got involved in the school’s CAPPIES production of Peter Pan while he was in tenth grade. He was also able to play for the school’s junior football team, as they played a spring schedule. There were no conflicts. But in eleventh grade, Kemp had a decision to make. Would he be an of-

chose to be a part of the school play. “It was a tough decision to make, and I wish I would have been able to do both,” he said. “I love
football, and a lot of my friends are friends that I made playing football. But this was something I wanted to do, too.” Kemp was able to find a compromise and stay involved in football, as he became the offensive line coach with the Nepean Tyke Eagles, with players ranging in age from 8-10. Because the team practiced from 7-9 p.m., the schedule did not conflict with the play. “Coaching was great,” he said. “It kept me in football and I really liked working with the kids.” While Kemp did well and enjoyed his role as Monsignor O’Hara, he was even more passionate about overseeing the make-up for the play. Kemp’s obsession with Halloween and gore led him to develop an interest in theatrical make-up. “Halloween is like my Super Bowl,” said Kemp, adding that he spends
months preparing his gruesome Halloween costumes with the intent in scaring the wits out of every trick or treater in Chapman Mills. Kemp has volunteered as a make-up artist and monster at the Halloween Haunt at Watson’s Mill in Manotick for the past couple of years. It was his expertise in make-up that made his portrayal of Scrooge that much better. Not only did he receive a Cappies nomination as best lead actor, but he also earned a nomination with the make-up team that he led. “It’s exciting to be nominated in both categories,” he said. “We had a great make-up team, and the play really allowed us to showcase what we could do.” Kemp’s make-up skills allowed him to transform from a 17-year-old student into a believable crotchety old man.

He worked on Scrooge’s mannerisms throughout last summer as he studied the character. His grandfather, David Chescoe, grew up in London and helped him with the accent. Kemp said it was “part Grandad and part Winston Churchill.” Kemp was so convincing as a crotchety old Scrooge that many audience members and even Cappies critics thought that the role was being played by a teacher and not by a 17-year-old student. “As an actor, that was like the best compliment you can have,” he said. “You want to be believable in your role.” Kemp’s make up to be Scrooge was his complex as the character. It involved a prosthetic application, which he created himself, and a lot of make-up. “I made a mold of my

The Independent#MyBarrhaven Q Nails has become a destination for nails, pedis and massages
For women who love to be pampered, Q Nails Spa has become a destination in Barrhaven. Q Nails has become known for the exceptional work, particularly with gel nails. While their work speaks for itself, some of their customer reviews echo the story. “I went to Q Nails for the first time yesterday as I needed help with my nails,” wrote Nicole. “It was one of the most pleasant experiences I have had in a “business” for a very long time, from the time I went in and waited for my appointment to my walking out. I absolutely loved the service, the cleanliness and the friendliness of the place and I am very thankful I was
ment. I love that they line the foot bath with disposable plastic so there is no chance of cross contamination. Thank you for the great experience!” Rose gave Q Nails five stars. “Always a great experience at Q Nails. I’ve been twice and Kevin is awesome! Always does a great job. One of my pet peeves is going into a nail spa and being completely ignored. That’s not the case here. The team is friendly and not afraid to chat with you. The space is huge and the hot wrap around your legs after every pedi is to die for.” Vicki also enjoyed her experience. “My sister took me here for a pedicure before baby arrived,
assigned to May as she not only is very competent at her work, she made that hour a very special and pleasant one. I loved her and will go back to her. Excellent place!” Edie also had a great experience. “I had a wonderful experience at Q Nails yesterday (my first time) and I’m coming back next week. The technicians are very professional and experienced and I had the best foot/leg massage in a nail spa EVER! Very clean environ-
and they were amazing. They helped me choose the perfect colour, were friendly and did a perfect job. Everyone I dealt with spoke English perfectly. Most reassuringly of all, it’s so clean you could eat off the floor in there. Even the decor is tasteful and modern. Would highly recommend this place to anyone.” Q Nails Spa is located in the Barrhaven Town Centre, 3777 Strandherd Road, between Ross’ Your Independent Grocer and Broadway. For more information, visit them in person or call 613.440.6100. Q Nails Spa is located between Ross’ Your Independent Grover and Broadway in the Barrhaven Town Centre.

Lyme Disease Program 2018
As spring has finally arrived, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is resuming its Lyme disease program for 2018. While there are tremendous health benefits to getting out and enjoying activities in the City’s many outdoor areas, it is important that residents be aware of the risks of Lyme disease, particularly if they are in areas suitable for ticks, such as wooded areas or areas with tall grass. Remember there are ways to protect yourself such as applying an approved insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin, wearing long pants and doing a tick check on yourself, your children and your pets. It is important to remove ticks as soon as possible, if you find a tick on your body, using finepointed tweezers, grasp the tick’s head as close to the skin as possible and pull slowly until the tick is removed. If you are interested in receiving more information or a tick key, please contact my office at Michael.Qaqish@ottawa.ca. You can also visit ottawapublichealth.ca/ lymedisease.

Orphaned (baby) Animals
In recent days, Ottawa By-law & Regulatory Services has received an increased number of calls regarding orphaned wild animals. In many cases, these animals have not been orphaned, rather their mothers have gone out to forage for food and will return. Should you come upon an animal that you suspect has been orphaned, please do not attempt to remove it. It is best to leave it alone and allow time for its mother to return. If you have moved the animal, please return it to where back to the spot you found it. It is a myth that their mothers will reject a baby because a human has handled it. If the mother does not return, please call 3-1-1 to report the animal as orphaned. Further information can be found at rideauwildlife.org and ottawahumane.ca.

By the Community, For the Community - Dickinson Days June 1-3 By Brian Cromie On June 1ST to 3rd Manotick celebrates Moss Kent Dickinson and the village he built around his 1860 Rideau River gristmill. Today, we cherish that history and our connections to the past. Two years after Dickinson Days began in 1976, the Kinsmen Club adopted it as their first community project. In the 1990’s, the Manotick Kiwanis added their support, and in the last 10 years, has hosted the annual event, aided by a number of Kinsmen
who have become Kiwanis members. But the Kiwanis Club relies on more than its 65 members; it relies on support from the Manotick BIA under Donna Smith, Watson’s Mill, ROSSS and YOMA, plus key business partners like Leimark Development Ltd., Royal LePage Realty, and Manotick Place, to make such a major event possible. Dickinson Days is truly a unique celebration by the community, for the community. The weekend includes a village parade on Friday
evening, a children’s show and spectacular fireworks at Centennial Park. Saturday starts early with a pancake breakfast put on by former Kinsmen members in the big tent opposite the Mill. This year, these Kinsmen celebrate 40 years of continuous service to our community. Over 100 vendors set up booths throughout the historic quarter to offer unique gifts and services. A Kid’s Catch and Release fishing derby attracts excited young anglers to the dam. On stage, the Manotick Brass, Denise
Smith and Piqué Dance Studios, and Cooligan Martial Arts among others perform throughout the day. Knox Church and M&M offer BBQ and Yves Houle’s carnival and bouncy castles delight kids of all ages. Saturday night in the tent, ROSSS/YOMA will host a concert by the Ottawa band Mystic Circle. This fundraiser is fast becoming a tradition of modern Dickinson Days. On Sunday, the Kiwanis Club will hold a BBQ luncheon in the tent in support of Doors Open Ottawa, as
both the Mill and Dickinson House welcome visitors who come to learn about village life in 19th century Ontario.
Please come and enjoy the festivities of Dickinson Days, celebrating our heritage and wonderful community.

Over the past few weeks, I have had a chance to visit some of our Barrhaven schools and it has been great fun to connect with the students and hear some of their ideas. I visited Grade 5 and 6 classes at St. Benedict. This was about my career and the kids asked typical questions like why did you do this, what do you do, how much money do you make. They were excited to hear that Mattamy has started building Black Raven Park, which is a large park west of the school. The school mascot is a Raven and I like the idea of having these students take ownership of a large park in their neighbourhood. I can tell you the students at Half Moon Bay School love “their park” so close to their school. As well, I really enjoyed spending time at St. Mother Teresa High School joining students there for their year-end Junior Achievement Final presentation of the business they created! Called JArden (Garden in a jar), all members of their Senior Management Team spoke well to what they had learned “building a business”. Their enthusiasm was contagious. I have two more JA events to attend, one at John McCrae and another at Longfields-Davidson Heights. I am looking forward to it. Mary Honeywell Elementary School held their Annual Health and Fitness Expo. I really enjoy this event. There is always a good mix of booths and Ke MY the students are both professional and enthusiastic. AKe It was great seeing Mayor

As Barrhaven housing market booms, so does its need for protection To see how Barrhaven’s business community has boomed, one needs only to take a drive on Strandherd Road. From the StrandherdArmstrong bridge at one end of the community to the new auto dealerships, Costco and the coming business campus at the other end, Barrhaven is becoming a sea of growth for businesses. But underneath what is obvious, Barrhaven has strong growth in many other professional and homebased businesses that may not have store fronts along Barrhaven’s main business corridors. With the huge growth in the number of
homes now in Barrhaven, one of the major areas of business growth has been in the housing, mortgage and insurance industries. One person who has seen the evolution of that side of Barrhaven is Sun Life advisor Diane Koven. “I have lived in Barrhaven for more than 30 years and worked in this business for two decades,” said Koven. “The growth that Barrhaven has seen is incredible.” One of the staples of Koven’s business is mortgage protection. She says that while it is one of the most important investments a family can make, it
is often an afterthought or even not thought of at all. “Through the years, I have been able to help a lot of people when they have moved into their homes,” said Koven. “A lot of people don’t understand the importance of insurance. What I like to do is explain to them what getting insurance through a life insurance company can do for you. It is much different than what a financial institution like a bank offers. This is a life insurance policy that is geared toward the mortgage, and when the mortgage is paid off, the life insurance policy is still in force, to protect the
family. “In many cases, it’s less expensive to get life insurance. I have been able to save a lot of my clients money.” Koven, who focuses her business on the Barrhaven market, says that reaching new customers in the community is a lot different than it was 20 or even 10 years ago. “We used to have the Welcome Wagon, and they would visit every new homeowner in Barrhaven when they moved here,” said Koven. “I met many of my neighbours through them, and it was great
because it gave people a chance to meet people in the community and to form a connection right away.” For Koven and other business people in Barrhaven, referrals have helped her grow. “For me, it’s about getting together with people to show them our products and how we can help them,” said Koven, who is also carries the internationally recognized designation of Certified Financial Planner (CFP). “People don’t even think twice about buying car insurance, but life insurance and health insurance are often so much more
important. Things do happen in life. Some people don’t want to spend money on health and life insurance but it is so important. You never know what is going to happen. Everyone needs a safety net.” Koven also helps people who do not have group health or dental coverage. As a Certified Financial Planner, Koven also works with people on everything from helping create a monthly budget to developing savings and investment plans. For more information, contact Diane Koven at diane.koven@sunlife.com (613-728-1223, ext. 2235).

Busy summer for Riverside South Community Association The Annual Spring Clean-up: A big thank you to everyone involved It has now become a tradition in Riverside South to participate in the big clean-up operation organized by the City of Ottawa the last weekend of April. To add a little spice to it, we even organize a fiercely friendly competition with Findlay Creek. Despite the rain and cool temperatures, it was wonderful to see so many of you helping out and preparing our community for the warm and sunny days. The operation was a tremendous success and we managed to reclaim the Golden Garbage Can from Findlay Creek. Again, thank you to all the volunteers, schools, youth
groups and citizens for your precious contribution. The Canada Flag program: Canada Flag program is back in 2018! The purpose of the program is to inspire national pride by putting up Canadian flags at participants’ homes on key Canadian holidays. The flags will be installed on lawns by volunteers in the week preceding Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day, and then removed in the week after. The cost to participate in the program is $40 per year. These fees are used to purchase the supplies for the program, and the money left over is destined
to fund other RSCA initiatives within the community. Registration can be done online through our website. For more information contact canadaflag@riversidesouth. org. Community Garden: We are still in active discussions with the different builders in the community and hope to be able to announce the official start of our first community garden in the coming weeks. All information will be posted to our website as well as on facebook. Get involved in your community, become a volunteer: Our community and our organization are growing steadily. In or-
der to serve you best, we are looking to organize a number of events, set-up workshops and looking at different ways we could help and support the residents and businesses of Riverside South. We are therefore actively seeking residents who would like to get involved in different capacities with the association. If you would like to be involved on a regular basis, we are looking for a webmaster; directors, leads and coordinators for the different
events and programs we are running. We are also looking for people willing to help us with specific events. More information can be found on our website or through volunteers@ riversidesouth.org.

Barrhaven marathoner running to pay tribute to her father at Ottawa Race Weekend By Jeff Morris Diana Devine knows that she will get emotional when she passes Parliament Hill during the Ottawa Race Weekend Marathon. “There is one stretch of the route that goes over the Portage Bridge across the Ottawa River,” she said. “From there, while I am running, I will be looking at the spot where the accident happened. It’s always very emotional for me when I go by there.” The accident Devine is referring is the one that claimed her father 13 years ago. Rico Ianucci, then a 65-year-old construction worker, was working on restoring the library on Parliament Hill. The backhoe he was driving sud-
denly switched into gear and fell off the cliff behind the library. Devine was pregnant with her third child at the time. “My father could have retired at any time, but he loved to work,” she said. “When it happened, it was a shock to us all.” Devine, who ran her first marathon in 2007, connected with Threads of Life, a charitable organization that offers support and counseling for the families of victims of workplace tragedies. She said the charity has been remarkable in helping many families deal with tragedies. She has raised more than $20,000 for Threads of Life, and each year, she wears a special red t-shirt with her father’s picture on it and the slogan,
“Running for Rico.” She has even worn cloth from his old shirts during the run. “It’s been a great way to remember him,” she said. “Raising awareness for workplace accidents helps, because maybe you can reach someone who might become more conscious. You always hope you can reach people and maybe prevent an accident from happening.” Devine, who works in the administration office at St. Mother Teresa High School, always receives strong support from family, friends, coworkers and students. “There are always people out there to cheer me on and support me,” she said. “But that one stretch of the course really gives me time to reflect and remember my father.”

DINING OUT g Fun Family Night Out n i r u t a Fe
Tips for a fun family night out In its 2016 National Dining Survey, Zagat found that the average person dines out 4.5 times per week. That figure may seem high to some, especially parents with young children at home. While parents of young children may not dine out as often as the average person, there are ways for families to plan fun nights out on the town, no matter how young their kids might be. · Find family-friendly restaurants. The establishments where families choose to do their dining can make all the difference. Trendy hotspots or upscale restaurants may not be great choices for family nights out. Such establishments may be too expensive or fail to offer kid-friendly fare, and parents of especially young children may feel uncomfortable if their tots begin to cry in the middle of dinner. When choosing a restaurant for a family night out, parents should look for a
2364 Roger Stevens Drive, North Gower
spot that’s naturally more noisy so a crying baby or excited child won’t make moms and dads or other diners uncomfortable. Diners or chain restaurants tend to offer kids’ menus in addition to plenty of dishes that kids will readily consume. · Choose the right time. Dining out at night can be difficult for families, as kids might be growing tired. Instead of a night out on the town, book a mid- to late-afternoon out. Restaurants tend to be less busy during these times of day, and parents can relax and enjoy the company of their children while still getting out of the house for a family meal together. · Bring along some entertainment. Some kidfriendly restaurants may provide crayons and placemats that kids can use to create their own artistic masterpieces. But parents should bring backup entertainment just in case. Pack some
613-489-2278
crayons and coloring books or bring along a book to read to your children while you wait for your meal to be delivered. Bring along a couple of toys to keep especially young children occupied as well. · Practice your night out. Parents of young children who have yet to try dining out as a family can make a few practice runs at home. Choose a night at home to teach kids how to behave at restaurants. If kids tend to squirm a lot or take long periods of time to eat meals at home, explain to them that such behavior is unacceptable at restaurants, encouraging them to sit still and focus on eating their meals during your practice run. Nights out on the town as a family may make parents of young children nervous or hesitant. But there are a handful of ways to make sure such excursions are fun for kids and parents alike.
