Commander’s Message

I

By Carl B. Morgan, Jr.

would like to thank you for your unanimous vote; I will do my best to serve you. Looking at trends in our membership, I noticed that we are doing well in recruiting new members and not as good in retaining our annual members. As we go about our mission of serving our veterans, we sometime forget that our members are veterans too, and we need to see what their expectations are in the post. We need to try to meet their needs and wants in the post as well as the veterans in need outside the post. Visiting the posts over the years, most have about 10-15% of their members come to the meetings. With about the same percentage helping with their post projects. I would like to see all of the new post commanders come up with new ways to meet the needs of the membership and get them involved with post operations and community service. Our present membership is our means to growth, through their actions and voice in the community, will draw new members and veterans to our cause. Another item that I would like to bring up is the AMVETS Riders program. It is the only program that involves all three of our organizations, because you must be a member of AMVETS, Son of AMVETS, or Ladies Auxiliary to become a member. Those who come to the Department Executive Com-

mittee meetings know I have talked about this at every meeting, and it is starting to grow. A lot of our members see motorcycle riders as gang member’s outlaws or Hell’s Angles, but today most are in the age of 40 to 60 years old and professionals in industries, business, law or medical fields. This is a way to gain new members I am looking forward to working with the Ladies Auxiliary, with the many functions that they do across the state. I hope to see them grow in numbers, simply put with their growth the strength of AMVETS grows. And the support to our Veterans and community is enhanced. Our Sons of AMVETS is a source of help and comradeship. For those Posts that haven’t started a Squadron, you should look into starting one. The Son’s at my Post 845 and 905 are very active, they support our functions, they do community support projects in the name of the Son’s and AMVETS and they enhance the over all image of AMVETS. There are other Squadrons doing hard work for their post the above stated groups are the one’s I have first hand knowledge. I know we will have a good working relationship in the upcoming year. Honor A Hero Sponsor an ROTC Medal

A

t the January DEC Finance Officer Laura Britton presented the idea of having NC AMVETS sponsor an ROTC Medal. The price will be $15.00 per sponsorship. She designed this patriotic business card size insert for the Medal case. Samples shown are in “Memory” of (her father) and the other is in “Honor” of (her son) who is currently serving. All of us have friends and family who have served or who are currently serving their country. What a great way to show our future military our respect and thanks to others who have served. The ROTC medals are presented by a member of your local Post at the schools ROTC Awards Ceremony, usually in March and April. If you would like to be present when the Medal is presented or even if you would personally like to present the Medal contact your Post to get the time, date and location of the presentation. Send your sponsorship information and check made out to AMVETS Dept of NC to: Finance Officer Laura Britton at P.O. hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July. Bill and I traveled to Lake Royale and participated in their annual parade. Thanks to the Franklin County Post 201 for including us. Later on that day I traveled to Bracey, VA for a fund raiser sponsored by Auxiliary 101 Halifax County, NC. The Department of North Carolina Ladies Auxiliary has entrusted me with a wonderful honor and I will do my best to live up to their expectations. Thank you Ladies. If any of the Auxiliaries would like me to visit, just call me. All of us should be aware by now that there will not be a Winter DEC. The Auxiliary will need to come up with a viable plan for our annual fund raiser and they will because they are such great planners and workers. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the October DEC in Statesville and before that, the National Convention in New Orleans, La. (“The Big Easy”) Please keep our veterans and active duty personnel in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless America and our Families. With “Spirit”, Pat Pulliam Department President

First-ever virtual 'march' on Washington for disabled vets

T

he DAV is organizing a march on Washington to raise public awareness and let lawmakers know voters care about veterans. But you won't need to travel to participate and have your voice heard. This march is going to be completely online, the first-ever Virtual March on Washington for Veterans. The DAV is working to ensure this will be the easiest and most convenient way ever to stand up for veterans. Together, we will generate greater public awareness and support for strengthening federal policies that provide health care and other earned benefits to disabled veterans. To sign up to participate in the Sept. 15 virtual march, simply visit http:// march.dav.org/default.aspx and enter your e-mail address at the top of the page. Your ZIP code will also be needed so lawmakers know which constituents care about the needs of veterans and their families. DAV will send you an e-mail the night before the "march" as a reminder. DAV will not share your e-mail address with or sell it to anyone, nor will DAV use it to solicit donations. On Sept. 15, the official day of the march, there will be video messages posted from a variety of veterans, family members, veterans' advocates, lawmakers and a few surprises. There will be opportunities to chat with those leading efforts to better the lives of veterans. And there will be easy-to-use tools for you to directly contact your representatives in Washington , D.C. If you cannot visit the site the day of the march, don't worry; it will all remain online. Remember, after you sign up, please help encourage others to do the same. Forward this e-mail, post links on your social networks, blog about it and tell everyone you know. Those who have put their lives on the line for freedom are depending on you.

PROGRAMS REPORTING

B

elow are web sites that provide information on veterans benefits and how to file/ask for them. Accordingly, there are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Please pass this information on to every vVeteran you know. Nearly 100% of this information is free and available for all veterans, the only catch is: you have to ask for it, because they won’t tell you about a specific benefit unless you ask for it. You need to know what questions to ask so the right doors open for you - and then be ready to have an advocate who is willing to work with and for you, stay in the process, and press for your rights and your best interests.

ost 845 Sons Squadron hosted their 2nd annual Flag Disposal Ceremony. This year’s response for flags that needed to be retired from service was overwhelming. They had 300 flags including on NC State flag that was 30x60 feet. Sgt Sisk and the East Rowan High School JROTC performed the ceremony. Our Post Commander Robert Hopkins played Taps and Brian Ritchie sang the National Anthem. It was a very moving ceremony.

Sgt. Willie Reaves “His dad (Mike) wanted to know if he was OK and had been wearing his helmet and armor ... I just wanted to know all the parts are working,” she explained. And at first inspection, they are. Young Reaves, a sergeant with the United States Army 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, N.Y., is smack in the middle of one of the world’s hot spots — a no-man’s land controlled by feudal tribal lords and the Taliban in the remote, rugged mountains linking Afghanistan and Pakistan. The sergeant was injured when he and other soldiers tried to reach three comrades whose jeep had been hit by an IED, an improvised explosive device, while near the end of a long, hard patrol, his mother told the Daily Herald. The jeep Sgt. Reaves was riding in was just ahead of another when the explosive went off. The jeep was sent down the mountain side. Reaves and three other solders were trying to pull the vehicle back up when everything gave way and tumbled down the mountainside. The three soldiers in the first jeep were seriously injured. Two were flown to Germany for treatment. One soldier in Reaves’ jeep was also seriously hurt and sent to Germany. For his part, Reaves is being watched for possible head trauma. Early Tuesday afternoon, Jean and Mike talked with their soldier son. “I’m worried about his emotional health,” she confided. “He is very worried about the injured soldier.” Willie grew up in Roanoke Rapids and married his high school sweetheart, Chrissy Paige Reaves. The couple has two children, William, 1, and Cadence, 3. Willie has been on duty in Afghanistan since January. Ironically, his brother Michael, a Marine, returned from Afghanistan last weekend. Jean and Michael Reaves are extremely active in veterans causes urging the community to stand behind the men and women serving our nation and being there when they come home. Tuesday, they were the recipients of such support. “We really want to thank everyone for the outpouring support and prayers. Every single phone call and message we have received has been appreciated,” Jean wrote in an e-mail message. Adding, “Please continue to keep these soldiers and their families in your prayers.”

ROANOKE RAPIDS — “It was the best phone call possible,” Jean Reaves said her voice breaking with emotion just a few minutes after talking with her son, Sgt. Willie Reaves as he was being treated at a field hospital in Afghanistan.
