President's Message By Liz Robbins ELECTION OF AAMN CHAPTER OFFICERS FOR 2011: On November 9, beginning at 7:00 PM, the election of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer will be held. The list of all the nominees is listed in this newsletter on page 2. Thanks to the members of the nominating committee, Anton Hajek, Wendy Thornton and Ron Tullius, for helping with this very important responsibility. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor. Mark that date on your calendar and join us. CHAPTER OPERATING HANDBOOK: The proposed copy of the Chapter Operating Handbook (COH) is also ready for your vote. Several AAMN members addressed concern with section 5.02 of the document. After some discussion, the following will be added to that section and presented to the membership on November 9. 5.02 Changes and Amendments. Changes and amendments may be made by the board of directors at a regular board meeting with a two-thirds vote of the board members in attendance, subject to the quorum requirements found in the bylaws under Article VII-Meetings. The general membership must be notified in written form of the proposed changes or amendments ten days before the meeting and be given an opportunity at the board meeting to voice any concerns about the changes or amendments. Written form may be via conventional mail, e-mail or other equivalent means.

PWD fishery research biologist (retired) John Prentice will talk about the biology, value (cultured pearls will be discussed), environmental problems, and efforts in support of Texas freshwater mussels (not the ones on the menu). Audience members will hold actual shells of mussels to see some of the diversity within this animal group. This program is approved for advanced training hours.

or the month of October we will continue our vegetation surveys at Scenic Canyon. Now that the weather is cooling off, we will resume our normal 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. work times. This work does not require any specialized training and is a great opportunity for you to learn how to use a GPS unit, compass, and even help you identify local flora. You MUST bring plenty of water and dress appropriately as we will be traversing rough terrain and sometimes through dense brush. A backpack is always helpful for carrying supplies. he City Forester's Plant Tree San Antonio program, which will add 9,000 trees to city parks, needs help immediately to water hundreds of young trees as they arrive from the nurseries. BOOtanica Fall Fest

Sunday, October 24 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Two 4-hour shifts are needed: 8:00 a.m. - Noon & 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Volunteers will help with children’s activities and other educational activities (face painting, potting up plants, art activities, etc.) or give directions to guests and help set up and take down. Halloween costumes are encouraged. Approved for volunteer service hours

Family Flashlight Night

Friday, November 12 from 6-8 p.m. One shift needed from 5- 8:30 p.m. Volunteers will help guide visitors around to stations in the Garden, man the TPWD's Sight & Sound Safari, and talk to visitors about nocturnal animals, night-blooming plants, and more. Bring your flashlight! Approved for volunteer service hours

Tree Care Classes

Fridays, October 1 – November 5 from 12:30 – 4:00 p.m. Approved for Master Naturalist Advanced Training (3 hours per date). This 21-hour course was designed to help prepare professional arborists to take the ISA Certified Arborist examination. Nonprofessionals are also welcome to attend the entire course or other sessions to gain a better understanding of the benefits of trees and develop their tree ID and tree care skills. Course schedule: October 1 Tree Biology and Tree Identification October 8 Urban Forestry, Soil Science, and Water Management October 15 Tree Selection, Installation and Establishment, Pruning and Oak Wilt October 22 Tree Nutrition and Fertilization, Diagnosis and Plant Disorders, Plant Health Care October 29 Tree Support and Lightning Protection, Tree Assessment and Risk Management, Trees and Construction November 5 Tree Worker Safety, Climbing and Working in Trees, Review Approved for advanced training pers and also gloves and water for this workday.
