reetings to all AMVETS members and as mentioned during last year’s March SEC meeting, once again my sincere congratulations to every one of you for another great, successful calendar year. I commend all of you for your hard work and dedicated time to our great Organization. IVC Bernice Aris raised the membership to a new all-time high and she is to be commended. To all of you, your hard work continues to make my commander’s job that much easier. During the past few months I have been actively involved with quite a few veteran events, many of which I have attended and participated in. The month of November

Congratulations to the newly established AMVETS Post #2 of Yuma, AZ. We all wish them well. Also congratulations to the AZ Quality AMVETS Post Winners: Post #3 of Dolan Springs, Post #66 and Post #5268 of Phoenix. Third time in a row for Post #3. All of us in Arizona AMVETS will be working with our Department First Vice Commander Bernice Aris, and all of the Post 1st Vice Commanders to recruit new members, and improve our renewal rates and establish new posts in spite of the current economic conditions.

started off with the quarterly SEC meeting in Phoenix and was held at the Radisson Phoenix City Center Hotel on November 7, 2009. The Annual Veterans Day parade in Phoenix happens to be one of my favorite because one sees many, many veterans having fun and demonstrating their proud veteran heritage. The November Parade is such a huge success in Phoenix and I commend all those responsible for making the event what it is. February 20, 2010, I along with PDC Goode, ALT NEC Epps, NDC Don Downing were Sacaton, Arizona attending the Gila River Reservation Ira Hayes Parade and Ceremony. Our Vice Commanders Bernice Aris (1st) and Tom Dingwall (2nd) continue to do an excellent job and they have taken the charge and have excelled in their performance. Yes, we often forget to report post activities and the lack of reporting is reflected in the National Headquarters reports Post 002 in Yuma has submitted their documents for chartering and it won’t be too long before they receive their charter. Great work, Mike. The March 2010 SEC was held in Tucson at Post 770, Tucson Estates Community center on March 13. In closing, I would like to thank all of you for being so supportive during my term as Department Commander. GO VETERANS.

Members of the Phoenix area posts marched in the Martin Luther King Day Parade, and they also plan to attend the 65th Iwo Jima Memorial presentations on 2/19 in Ira Hayes’ hometown of Sacaton. Posts within the Southern District gave turkey dinners for Thanksgiving and Fry’s supermarket gift cards to members of the 162nd Fighter Wing in Tucson. Post #65 and other posts within the department held Christmas parties for children and helped feed the homeless. 100% participation in programs is the goal of the Department 2nd Vice Commander Tom Dingwall, and all the other Post 2nd Vice Commanders.

Service:

Phone cards were handed out by Tucson VAVS Representative Jon Burleigh during the past holiday Season to the patients at the Tucson VA Hospital, to Operation Exodus at the Airport for Service Members going home, and to service members being deployed from the 162nd Fighter Wing. Department Commander Jim Hostetler, AMVETS Manny Madrid, Jr. and Albert Martinez, and Auxiliary member Lawanda Darrough handed out phone cards to patients at the Phoenix VA Hospital. The posts within the department all participated in VA Stand Downs, Veterans Day Parades and Pearl Harbor Day Memo-

rials. My Post #11 of Tucson contributed gifts to Post #39 for their Santa at the VA Hospital Program. We also had our Annual Fund Raiser with Super Bowl Party. Congratulations Saints. Members also attended the open house at the Tucson VA Hospital on 2/10.

Upcoming Events:

Arizona Department of AMVETS, Inc. will be holding its State Executive, Membership, Finance and Constitution & By-Laws Committee meetings on Saturday March 13 at Post #770 in Tucson. Our Department Commander Jim Hostetler, Alternate NEC Charles Epps, Auxiliary Member Lawanda Darrough, and I all plan to attend the Spring NEC/ Silver Helmet Dinner in Virginia 03/18-03/21. I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and has a happy and healthy New Year 2011. We were all shocked to hear of the passing away of PNC Joe Vann. Our prayers go out to his family. May he rest in peace. GOD BLESS THE TROOPS. May them come home safely and soon.

ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF AMVETS, INC. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

s Executive Director and Finance Officer my work continues to focus on audits, financial reports, correspondence, newspaper articles and mandated organizational reports. I have tentatively scheduled for the annual 2008-2009 audit as well as the first six-month of Fiscal Year 2009-2010 for Sunday, February 28, 2009. Department Commander Jim Hostetler and First Year Trustee Albert Martinez will be conducting the audit. I intend to have the audit findings for the March SEC meeting in Tucson. As has been prior occurrences, I continue to see a decrease in not only the number of articles submitted but featured stories as well. There is a parallel issue with a lack of post reporting activities to the Department 2nd VC, who ultimately collates the data and forwards to National Headquarters. There are numerous community activities that we undertake yet there is no reporting. I believe that all post minutes and community activities should be reported and publicized. As previously asked: Where are you AMVETS? Where are my newspaper articles and pictures for the entire AMVETS world to read and see?

irst and foremost, welcome to our 29th Annual AMVETS State Convention in Tucson, Arizona. As has been the case for the past three years, it seems like yesterday that I was reelected as your Department Commander. I would also like to extend my congratulations to the Ladies Auxiliary in celebration of their 27th Annual State Convention. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I take this opportunity to welcome our National Guest, National Commander Mr. Duane Miskulin. The Arizona department of AMVETS, Inc. is very fortunate to have pour National Commander attend our state convention. I have had an excellent four year run as Department Commander and as I have mentioned before, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who have assisted me during this time. From Ladies Auxiliary members, to District Commanders to Department, SONS and Post Officers - I thank you all. One of my goals as Department Commander was to increase our membership by 10 % and the goal was reached this past Membership Year. IVC Bernice Aris was able to recruit a new high of 1,438 members. Kudos and a job well done to Bernie. We lost Post 99 this past year however as regards Post Development we have a new Post in Yuma, Arizona. Post 002 was Chartered this past year and we very much welcome Commander Mike Condon to the AMVETS Family. I am convinced that we can expand and enhance our our number of Posts and membership. Touring the state will be of great benefit towards that goal. I look forward to seeing you during the convention and hope that all of our AMVETS members have a great time. 

I am excited and looking forward to the Ad Fund Raising Campaign and the planning for the May, 2010 State Convention. Once again we will have RFPs for the 2011 Convention Site and I expect some strong competition amongst the hotels. I intend to have a submittal from the Cocopah Resort and Casino from Yuma/Somerton. Some posts have experienced changes in their organizational structure and I have not received Officer Form(s) indicating said changes from those respective posts. The only way that we can keep current mailing rosters is by having an updated listing. So, please send them as soon as possible. In closing, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all Auxiliary and Sons members for your dedicated hard work, for it is you who help AMVETS become a better organization. See you soon. Accordingly, there are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Please pass this information on to every veteran you know. Nearly 100% of this information is free and available for all veterans. The only catch is you have to ask. They won’t tell you about a specific benefit unless you ask for it. You need to know what questions to ask so the right doors open for you -- and then be ready to have an advocate who is willing to work with and for you, stay in the process, and press for your rights and your best interests. 

Southern District Report

rizona Department of AMVETS United Southern District has been busy since September. The officers and members attended the VA’s Welcome Home at Tucson Electric Park on October 17th all officers were in attendance along with members from AMVETS Post #11, #39 and #770. Then in November Southern District delivered four Thanksgiving dinners to the 162nd fighter wing, Air National Guard through the Family Readiness Coordinator Barbara Gavre and MSgt. Carla Cusam. In December Barbara Gavre helped Southern District deliver two Fry’s $50 gift cards to families of the 162nd F.W. Southern District passed out a silhouette to each post in the Southern District each posts will be selling tickets to raise money for Southern District’s operating funds.

MINUTES

Minutes of the regular monthly general business meeting of AMVETS Headquarters United Southern District held at AMVETS Post 39 at VFW POST 10015 AT 5768 S. Fontana St., Tucson, AZ. The meeting was held on Sunday February 14, at 10:30 a.m. Commander Richardson called the meeting to order at 10:30a.m. Past SD Commander Don offered the opening prayer. Commander Richardson appointed as USD 1st Vice Bill Vanasdale. Commander Richardson turned in his letter of resignation and left the meeting. 1st Vice Vanasdale asked all if they would keep the positions they were holding. Everyone said yes. Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Provost Marshal Alex Bell. Preamble to the AMVETS National Constitution was passed. Roll call of officers: Finance report: Fred didn’t have a total except we were out of money. Totals will be given next month. Minutes: Motion made and seconded to accept the minutes as received passed. Bills and commutations: Commander Bill has still not been able to get in touch with Post 2 Commander Mike Condon in Yuma. Denise spoke about the Salute to Veterans at the VA. Southern District was represented at this event. This event is held at every VA Hospital in the country every year. Children at schools across the country make cards for the veterans and they are passed out at that time. Reports of Officers: 2nd Vice: Alex spoke of the knelling soldier they raffled at 770 that raised $125. VAV Rep. Jon Burleigh talked about the new housing sponsored by the VA. Also there will be a ground breaking at the VA on March 18 at 1:00. Post Business: Post 11: Commander Don said that they only sold two tickets for the Soldier and Post 11 decided to donate $100. They had their super bowl party with raffles. Post 39: The ladies had a chili dinner. The men will be having a wet burrito dinner on the 20. Bryan also gave Southern District a check for the Soldier for $150 they will raffle it later since they have a mini refrigerator raffle at this time going on. Post: 89: Bill asked Denise to call their Commander and see if they were going to have someone attend these meetings. Post 770: Mitch Wilson gave report. Something going on every night. The Color Guard is available to attend any function you need. They now have new uniforms. They are working on getting a charter for the riders. Good and Welfare: Meeting closed at 11:30. Chaplain’s fund collected $12. Next meeting will be after SEC on March 13 at Tucson Estates Community Center.

Local AMVETS Hold Installations

MVETS from most of the Phoenix and Tucson packed James C. Foster Memorial AMVETS Post 65 this weekend to attend the Post 15 and Post 65 installations of the AMVETS and Ladies Auxiliary Officers. Denise Campbell, AMVETS Auxiliary Department President came all the way from Tucson to install the Ladies Auxiliaries of both posts. AMVET Past Department Commander Bob Boyd opened the ceremony with prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Millard Connor sang a beautiful version of America. Outgoing Auxiliary President Jeanetta Brooks-Garland came forward and presented Certificates of Appreciation to several of her Auxiliary members for their efforts during the year with special gifts to Tara Blume-Ross and Debra White for service above and beyond the

call of duty and Etta Foster as Treasurer. Department President Campbell then installed both Auxiliaries respectively. Beverly Hill will lead Auxiliary 65 this year and Jean Watson will remain as President of Auxiliary 15. Commander Hostetler installed both Sons Squadrons first. Glen Beasley is Commander of Squadron 65 and Alto Williams is Commander of Squadron 15. George Rogers was reinstalled as Commander of Post 15 and Homer Washington was reinstalled as Commander of Post 65. Commander Washington made a surprise presentation of a Life Membership to post member Ronnie Robinson for his special efforts toward the post this year. PDC Boyd closed the ceremony with prayer. Members then enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared and served by Post 65 Auxiliary and spent the afternoon fellow shipping and listening to good music. embers of the American Veterans , (AMVETS), its Sons and Ladies Auxiliaries traveled from all over the State to the Inn Suites in Tucson, Arizona for the annual Department Convention held May 21-23, 2010. The weather in Tucson was perfect for the occasion. Members began to arrive Friday and were ready to go work on year end business, receive awards and elect new officers on Saturday. AMVETS National Commander Duane Miskulin, District 6 Commander Terry McCarty and Sons National Commander Dave Spencer were guests of the AMVETS and NEC of Wisconsin who was the fiancé of National Commander Miskulin was the Auxiliary’s guest. Post 39 and Post 65 both received awards for entrants in the National Flag drawing contest. Auxiliary 65 received the most awards of the Phoenix locals. Awards included 3rd place awards in scholarship, community service and child welfare, 3rd place in the flag drawing contest and 1st place in Americanism. They also received a Super Star Award from NEC Sheila Atchison for recruiting the most new members. Newly elected President Beverly Hill won PDP Etta Foster’s personal Membership Award for signing up the most new members. Auxiliary 5268 received 2nd place in community service, 2nd place in scholarship, and 3rd place child welfare. NEC PDP Sheila J. Atchison gave out Star Membership Awards: Celebrating every member because every member counts and filling out the membership application completely. Every member who signed up at least one member received a certificate. Twenty-two members from various auxiliaries received certificates. Other awards she presented were: Super Star Auxiliary Award to Post 770 for having most new members - 42. All Star Auxiliary Award to Post 65 for having at least 10 new members. Super Star Sponsor Award to Jill Devine, Post 3 for signing five new members. All Star Sponsor Award for member signing up the next highest: (tied) Virginia Liggins, Auxiliary 5; four new members and Etta Foster Auxiliary 65, four new members. We are in need of donation of soda if possible. If and when the weather clears up we will be setting a date for our two-mile road clean-up. They are called the “Dolan Gents”. These are the husbands who always come to the meeting with their “Dolls”. So far there are six members. The April 19 meeting was held at the Redneck B.B.Q. in Kingman. The next meeting was in Oatman and lunch was at the Avi Casino across the river in Nevada. We are hoping to get enough members to fill the Dolan Springs Bus, it takes 8 to 10 people. Fire Station #41 got another treat- Auxiliary post #3 –donated a big cake to them-One time it will go to station #41[in town] then to #42[19st.] them to #43[in Meadview]. We got a call from Tom and Pat Williams in Okla. They said they are doing fine and have requested a bunch of Lifelegacy forms for their friend and family. I called my contact and they have a big package on the way. We all owe a giant thank you to Fran for starting Lifelegacy up with us here in Dolan Springs. From Commander Gil: Last week we had a visitor at our gate. It was Bill Long all the way from Wister, Oklahoma. He was passing through and stopped by to say “Hello” then went on his way home. He sure looked good. All that fishing must be good for him. Any ideas for Post #3-good or bad- just give me a call. 928-767-3167. Remember, your Commander and Auxiliary President are working to make Post #3 known all over. We post Post #3 information all over the web. From Auxiliary President Jill; Ladies, we will be having a rummage sale soon, we will set date at next meeting.

Also, start thinking about what shift you can volunteer for at the coffee break, remember shifts are only 4 hours long and we will be open for 4 days. We need people with food handler’s cards. Easter is just around the corner—so to all “Happy Easter to all”. Nominations and elections for new post officers are here. This April 8th meeting [2nd. Thursday] will be at 5:30 p.m. at the community hall. The days are getting longer and warmer and our meeting will go back to the 5:30 p.m. meeting time. Some of us ladies here in Dolan Springs are members of the Red Hat Society, known as the Dolan Dolls. We get together once a month and go different places. Now some of our hubbies have started to join us ladies as we do carpool and the hubbies do the driving. We have about four hubbies [one of whom is Gil].We haven’t named them yet, but we will come up with a name for them soon. Dolan Springs is going “Western”. The chamber will be working with the townspeople to redo the store fronts and make some changes to the look of our town. We all know times are hard now but we are not dead, a little paint goes a long way-weed-repair etc. At the Chamber’s meeting last week, there were six members of AMVETS Post #3 in attendance. We have all the tour buses driving up and down Pierce Ferry Rd. If we want them to stop in our little town, we have to make it appealing for them to stop and shop. From Your Commander: Our April 8 meeting will be nominations and elections. So far, we only have one person running per office; this means it will be a white ballot-so be at the meeting April 8th / 5:30 p.m. Remember, it’s your post and your officers who will run it. It’s not easy to get people to volunteer 4 to 8 hours a day for four days or more and to put up with the weather we have up here and we did have some weather-didn’t we? We lost a canopy to a monsoondown shear and some days it was so hot or cold it was hard to cope. But we made it through it all. Now we start all over again. Post 11 Report

MVETS Post 11 has been busy since the last SEC Meeting. Here are some of the things that our Post 11 has been doing since the Convention. 1. Our post has designed and maintains a web site at www.freewebs.com/amvets1 2. As always, we donate time and donations to our host home DAV Chapter 18. We are very grateful for them allowing us the call their home, our home. 3. We had another Super Bowl Sunday fund raiser on February 7, 2010. 4. Post 11 donated a box of stuffed toys to Post 39’s “X-Mass” at the VA Hospital in Tucson.

We will continue to donate time and funds to any worthy cause that comes our way. After all, the name of the game is “VETERANS HELPING VETERANS!” Not to shabby for a post that only has about 60 members. As usual we helped our fellow veterans, at the hospital (VAMC), in the shelters (Stand Down) & at the transitional housing (Esperanaza & Commin’ Home). We contribute to other veterans organizations (Legion, DAV & VFW) in their efforts to stand out in the community be it with cash or physical assistance, Post # 11 will always help where & when we can.We help with scouting, veterans, food drives,clothing drives you name it we are somehow involved. We are represented at all department meetings by one of our officers and keep informed as to what and how AMVETS should get things done. Again as always. Post 39 Report

e have been very busy at Post 39 since convention. Auxiliary and AMVETS made it the last day of school to give the children of Santa Clara elementary the awards they received from the AMVETS Department for entering the Americanism contest. For the second year with the help of librarian Denise Cabello the auxiliary had 14 students enter the contest. The auxiliary hopes next year with Denise’s help they will have more students enter. For our 5th straight year we participated in the Memorial Day Service at South Lawn Memorial Park with members from Post 39 & 11. We had Christmas in July at the Veterans Hospital and then again in December we had Santa at the VA. There were eight members AMVETS and Auxiliary with Santa Claus armed with Christmas cards, stuffed animals and lap robes visiting every patient at the VA hospital. A good time was had by patients and members. There are dinners once a month held by AMVETS or Auxiliary served at the VFW 10015. I’d like to thank everyone who came out to vote at the elections. We had a pretty good turnout for the elections this year. We are having a steak dinner at the VFW on Friday, June 18 from 5-8 PM. Price is $7, come on out and join us for a great dinner and good company. Our next meeting is on June 19 at 10:00 am. The State Convention is 21-22-23 May at the Inn Suites on Granada and St. Mary’s. We have accomplished many good and worthwhile projects this year, and I’m hoping for even more during this year. We are going forward with starting a Sons of AMVETS squadron in our post. 1st Vice Commander Sandy Phillips is coordinating that effort, and will be keeping everyone posted on how that is progressing. We will be having a dinner on Friday, February 19th from 5-7. The planned menu is “Wet Burritos,” and the cost will be $5.

1st Vice Commander For those annual members who have not renewed, it is with regret that this will be the last newsletter you will receive. With regard to the Sons of AMVETS: Eligibility in the Sons of AMVETS shall be limited to all male descendants, grandsons, adopted sons and stepsons, fathers, husbands, widowers, and brothers of members of AMVETS, and deceased members of AMVETS, or service personnel who died and would have been eligible for membership in the parent AMVETS Organization, and are at least eighteen (18) years of age and is not eligible for membership in the parent organization. This is not to include in-laws of any type. This is from the CBL for the Sons of AMVETS. If you know anyone who meets these qualifications and would like to join, please get in touch with me. Adjutant I want to give everyone a brief report of Post 0039 activities and accomplishments for the 2009. In the interest of keeping our membership informed of our Post’s status it is important that everyone know how and what we are doing. We had a good year in 2009 and we are going to work harder than ever to make 2010 even better. We did well financially in 2009. Please come to our meetings to learn the details or our progress. During every meeting, I give a report on our financial status and welcome questions. As always, our financial records are open for examination by members at every meeting, with our Commander’s approval. Our tax reporting obligation under section 501(c) (19) of the tax code is current and we are recognized by the IRS as a tax exempt organization.

We still have a food donation box located at VFW Post 10015 which is always in need of additional non-perishable items. We, and I include myself, need to work harder on this. This food is turned over to the VA for distribution. During these especially difficult times, this is more important than ever. Please help if you can! Santa Claus visited inpatients in the VA Hospital again in July and in December, 2009. Stuffed animals, get well cards, lap robes and good wishes were given out. Our veterans really enjoyed the visits and interest. We participated in Memorial Day services at South Lawn Memorial Park. This also is an annual event for Post 39. Post 39 and Post 39 Ladies Auxiliary volunteered and participated in distribution of food at Community Food Bank in Tucson and volunteering for work in the Food Bank’s garden. Post 39 members also volunteered service to our community by helping out during the Postal Workers Annual Food Drive. Post 39 and out Ladies Auxiliary put on several fund raising dinners this past year also. We enjoyed lots of good food and drink, entertainment, games, and we raised some money for our programs. Come on in for good food and friendship! Again this year, we contributed to the Arizona Sportsmen’s Fund by donating money to Send-A-Kid-To-Camp fund. This is a program that benefits all children, many of whom are children of members of our armed forces, who otherwise might not be able to attend this type of event. We have forged an alliance with the U.S.A.F. 162nd Fighter Wing and are doing more things with our military personnel and their families now Our building fund continues to Grow, albeit slowly. n Mothers’ Day, Sons of AMVETS Post 65 sponsored A Mothers’ Day Dinner for the Ladies Auxiliary of the post. The affair started without a hitch. The Band, “The Sounds of Badness,” featuring Larry Bailey and Bam filled the air. The decor was most warming with pink tablecloths, candles, and Mothers’ Day balloons all around. All women were given a long stemmed rose, as all sat and conversed with one another. The meal was delicious. There was a nice serve yourself salad bar. After dinner, a champagne toast was given to all mothers. Ms. Etta Foster was presented a beautiful bouquet from the Sons. Tickets were sold for the raffle of a large Mothers’ Day Basket, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary. There were other door prize bags won from the raffle drawings as well. The evening continued with dancing and conversation as everyone ate and enjoyed themselves. The Auxiliary would like to thank the Sons for a very entertaining affair.
