NEC Report

A
MVETS held their 66th Annual National Convention in Louisville, KY on August 7-14, 2010. There was a two-day symposium on Monday and Tuesday August 9 & 10. The Pre-NEC meeting was held on Wednesday, August 11 to give our Department reports. The General Opening Session was held on Wednesday afternoon with special speaker VA Chief of Staff, John Gingrich and Minister of Republic of China, Taiwan Veterans Affairs Commission Gen Tseng Jing-Ling and his delegation. Later in the afternoon the Joint Memorial Service was held. Thursday, August 12 was taken up mostly by speakers from the Sons, Auxiliary, Sacks and Sackettes. St. Jude’s Hospital had a representative there thanking us for our generous support. Pause-for-a-Cause had their representatives and their dogs there as well. The University of Phoenix was there and announced they will continue to give 50 scholarships per year and supplied us with brochures. Choice Hotels was also there to say they will give discounts to all AMVET members using Rate ID #00207430. All National Districts held their meetings and elected their officers later Thursday evening. National District II elected John Cooper from the Department of VA as our Commander for this year. Friday, August 13 was taken up mainly by reports, Constitution & Bylaws and Resolutions and bids for the 2014 National Convention which was voted to go to Memphis, TN.
Friday night, the “Commander and President Banquet” was held. On Saturday, August 14 the election of officers was held. There were a total of 571 delegates from around the country with a total of 19 being from North Carolina. Jerry Hotop from Missouri was elected unopposed for National Commander. The NEC met shortly thereafter to elect two people to the Finance Committee and approve a short budget due to a change in the calendar year. PNC John Lorec from NC was elected to that committee again and has done a splendid job in the past. The next NEC Meeting will be December 3-5 at Hilton Washington Dulles Airport in Herdon, VA. There will also be a Leadership Conference in Pigeon Forge, TN January 21-23, 2011. Reservations can be made online at AMVET’S website or contact Velma Hart. The next National Convention will be in St. Louis, MO August 6-13, 2011. NEC Jimmy L. Ely AMVETS Dept. of NC

throughout the paper
From the President When you read this article, 2010 will be or almost over. I sincerely hope that everyone has had a blessed Christmas. Although there were some changes made as to where the hospitality room was held in October, I would like to commend everyone that helped out. Your hard work and great efforts helped to make a challenging situation a lot easier. Remember to bring at least one new item to be auctioned off at the Auxiliary Department’s major fund raiser of the year, the reverse drawing. Tickets and lists should have been sent out to all the auxiliaries for the items that they need to bring. Please do not forget to do your reporting for the different service programs. This is very important because this shows what our Department has accomplished for the year. Go to the schools
See Post 101 for more pics & look out for movies like
and present the Americanism program as you might be surprised how many of the schools will be interested. Hold yard sales for St. Judes, etc. Sometimes an informal round table discussion will help jog people’s memories about services that they have done or would like to do. Just put new projects in your minutes. Also, try to do a “Show and Tell” project for this year. I know that there are creative members out there! Please remember our active duty military and veterans in your prayers. God bless America! Pat Pulliam, Department Auxiliary President

post 316 - rockingham By Richard Martin Left to right are retired Col. Larry Rogers, Sgt Jones from Hamlet National Guard, Marty Nielson Post Commander of AMVETS Post 316, and past Post Commander Lacy Shepherd.
Sgt. Jones presented AMVETS Post 316 with a statue of the Minute Men, for every thing we did to help them and their families while they were in Iraq. Post 316 sent phone cards to them, and served them and their families a meal when the Hamlet National Guard left for their tour of duty overseas and upon their return home. AMVETS Post 316 also held skating and Christmas parties for their families.
This is from the week before DEC when the kids at Pine Grove donated five gallons of pull tabs to the post. Sam and I took them to DEC and turned them in with another 3 gallons from others.
Civitan Award
The Rockingham Civitan Club awarded Dennis Holloway the Civitan Citizen of the year of 2010. Dennis is a member of AMVETS Post 316.
The children pictured are the (Ra’s) Royal Ambassador’s, (GA’s) Girls in Action and Mission friends of Pine Grove Baptist Church, along with Martin W. Nielsen of the AMVETS post 316 Rockingham. The mission groups and members of Pine Grove collected five gallons of Aluminum Tabs for the Ronald McDonald house.

post 906 - Boiling springs lake AMVETS Raffle winner 2010 and Baseball Hey y’all, We hit one local newspaper yesterday...hopefully five more area papers and magazines shortly. The article was condensed and reworded somewhat but it does the job nicely...getting the AMVETS name out there. And thanks to Jaime and Shane I distributed the ball caps tonight. The players were very appreciative...could the gift helped in their winning tonight 15 to 4? The team photo was taken on Tuesday October 19th at Smithville Park prior to their 7 p.m. game. Post officers are invited to be part of that pic. Shutter wil click probably at 6:30. This will be a second round of newspaper publicity. Send me any photos and articles of local AMVETS activities worthy of placing in the newspapers. The JROTC scholarship and individual awards that we distribute at the end of the school year will be great publicity opportunities. The ‘area festivals’ coming up in the spring will also be good chances for public viewing. Our chicken BBQ needs a photo/story prior to the actual event. Got pics of last years event? Writeup? Send me your thoughts of ideas for publicity and new member recruitment.

Post 906 Cell phones
ere are some pictures where Auxiliary 906 were collecting cell phones for the “Cell Phones For Soldiers” on September 25th in Southport. This has been one of our projects over the past four years and we have shipped out 95 cell phones for the program since May. We are participating in our local Community Center Fall Festival this weekend to do another collection of cell phones. Will send you pictures later on that. When we do a collection, we combine it with handing out information on the AMVETS and Auxiliary to educate the people about our post and hopefully recruit some new members. In the pictures one, two and three, are: Jerry Wolf for the AMVETS and Rachel Okun for the Auxiliary.
