A size

CMYK

The internationally reconised size for paper.

A four colour process comonly used in digitital and litho printing which is an acronym for: cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Art Work The design or image to be printed.

Deboss

B size

A pattern that is sunken into the surface of the material.

Paper sizes that were created in order to provide paper sizes that weren’t covered by the A series

Duotone A tonal image that is created by using two colours.

Bleed A guide around a piece of artwork that shows were the work will be cut off when printing.

Digital Print A printing process that is caried out by a computer sending information to an electronic printer

Binding A process for holding together pages in a publication.

Emboss

C size

A design that is stamped in without using ink to a substrate to create a raised surface.

The size of paper most commonly used for folders, postcards and envelopes.

Foiling

Margins

A metalic foil pressed onto a subtrate through heat to create a reflective quality.

The space inside the pages so that the text doesnt over run.

Grids

A printing technique in which the ink is transfered from a printing plate to a blanket cylinder and then on to the stock on which it is to be printed. Also known as lithography

A way to structure the layout of a page to keep it in proportion. In the form or rows and collumns. Ink A liquid that is used to transfer images or design onto a substrate. Inks come in many different colours and shades. JPEG A file format for storing / saving photographic images. It’s most suitable when working in Photoshop.

Offset lithography

Pantone A set of specially mixed inks that are created beyond the CMYK colour process. They are commonly used by designers to create consistent colour in designs. Process colour See CMYK deffinition.

RGB

Spot varnish

Is an acronym for red, green and blue. They are the additive primary colours, and are most comonly used in screen based design.

A varnish applied to a specific area of a printed piece. Stock The paper to be printed on.

San Serif A font without the extended end strokes.

Substrate The material, paper or surface to be printed on.

Serif A font with extended end strokes.

TIFF

Silk - Screen printing

Also know as tagged image file format is used for storing photographic images to maintain it’s resolution.

A low volume printing method where ink is passed through a screen, which carries a design on to a substrate.

Varnish A clear or tinted liquid shellac or plastic coating put on a printed item to create a glossy or dull finish.

Spot colour A printing ink specifically mixed to create a specific colour. Including metallic and flourescent inks
