EVOLUTION OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN • After the 1450’s, Architecture became a profession, rather than a craft, and its practitioners became some of the most respected and educated members of society, rather than artisans, gifted as they may have been. • Before “architects” were only craftsman and master builders/masons. Becoming a mason or a carpenter— the two major crafts needed to construct a building—was a way of life, not a vocation. • Buildings, prior to the Renaissance, were constructed not planned. • With the introduction of scale drawings, architects ceased to be technicians supervising the construction project on-site and became designers, who expressed their professional skills through drawings. A good way of communicating their ideas. • To emphasize their distinction from the master builders, who continued to be in charge of construction, they adopted the name architect, derived from Greek.
