ABOUT THIS PORTFOLIO
Praxis and Reflection This is a brief graphical portfolio showcasing select works from the author’s B.Arch.Stud Honours degree studies (2011). The intent is purely to demonstrate his ability to follow a process of project development to achieve a definite architectural intervention. “My design ethos is to create bold statements, using simplistic interventions by making use of raw and honest materials that reflect the contextual surroundings.” Solutions to problem statements need to conform to Three Statements; Ecology, Economy, and Emotion. Out of these the author believes architectural identity and sustainability is attainable. Praxis and Reflections is an illustration of confidence and determination to create sensible yet desirable architecture.

HONOURS // INTRODUCTION
The University of the Free State Department of Architecture offers an intellectual environment for exploring man-made and natural aspects of the designed environment as an integrated project. Set in the heart of the Free State, the most centrally located region in South Africa, the Department embraces the opportunity to investigate the social, cultural, and historical ecologies of how urban and rural architecture intersects to create meaningful place. We encourage our students to investigate how context, history, and experience of the place and the region shape poetic, life-sustaining, and resource sensitive architecture. The Department also value process-orientated design as a way to connect the physical with the human aspect of making buildings. Through the five-year training programme, the School has synthesized the components of design studio, history of architecture, theory of architecture, and building science to achieve this goal. Students are stimulated to develop an understanding of the interrelationship between the individual and his/her surroundings, the individual as a social being, and during the Honours and Master courses, the relations of social groups and societies. Drawing especially on current theories in phenomenology and critical regionalism, the School envision the architectural training in design to be more integrated between architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. The School discourses that question and challenge the boundaries of both regional and global influences on the production of sustainable architecture in South Africa.

FOUR THEMES: CONSERVATION // SUSTAINABILITY // URBAN DESIGN // HOUSING This is a introductory project regarding the four focuses of the year’s study. The main priority was the preservation of an existing church building. The other aspects are used to create focus on the preserved structure. The proposal consisted of rentable commercial space, a walkway to promote pedestrian interaction, a urban park and structured wetland as well as mixed-use residential and retail converted buildings. New parking space was addressed as well as the interaction of the proposed development with the surrounding context and amenities.
04
R5m HOUSE This project was to create a realistic scenario regarding the realising of a building from site acquisition, cost planning, site restrictions, local authority restrictions, programme brief, and technical documentation. All within time-critical circumstances.

TIME-CRITICAL OFFICE This project was a larger scaled time-critical office building. Not only had the building to comply to all restrictions and programme requirement, but also to be a carbon-zero development. The requirements was for a three-storey administrative office block, with sufficient parking, services, sun-controls, and water recycling. Height restrictions and site-setbacks as well as the surrounding context had major influence on the setting of the building on the site.

Climatic factors, orientation, vistas, and the adjacent buildings contributed largely to the handling of the facades and sun- and wind controls. Detailed skin-sections were required to illustrate the efficiency of the building measured against the required programme. SPECIFICATION NOTES:

THE URBAN APPENDAGE: ACTIVATION OF A BLOEMFONTEIN PUBLIC SPACE This project focuses on the designed landscape of the city. It investigates the regional city (Bloemfontein) as an organism of ecological processes: Physical, social, cultural, historical, and environmental. The concept ‘urban appendage’ is used in the design process to create a meaningful urban place within this ‘organism’. The goal of this project is to identify an appropriate site for an architectural intervention in the city of Bloemfontein, connect various urban processes into the continuity of a more sustainable urban landscape and create meaningful urban place through the design of a new Bloemfontein tourist centre.
06
THE URBAN APPENDAGE: ACTIVATION OF A BLOEMFONTEIN PUBLIC SPACE
The Urban Design Proposal The urban design proposal is to create a pedestrian friendly environment for the section of the city located between the urban node and the building site that had been selected. This is a strategic design plan that considers different modes of transportation, future land uses, densities, height restrictions, building setbacks from the street, parking, access, and other street design elements.

ARBORETUM // BAMBOO BASED URBAN FORESTRY SOCIAL SYSTEM
Post-Peak Oil Scenario
City Condenser
This project considers a new architectural project in the city of Bloemfontein in the post-peak oil era. Petrol, natural gas, and other fossil fuels are expensive, hard to come by, and sometimes unavailable. Self-sufficiency and localised codependency on energy, food production, and activities are the only reliable way of ensuring livelihood. South Africa offers an exciting environment for new innovations in low-carbon lifestyles, practices, and technologies. South Africa, and Africa, has a unique opportunity in simple, low technology solutions
This project searches to condense urban qualities, experiences, and life-sustaining activities (personal and shared) into a cohesive, creative new environmental system on a single urban site: this includes the built and organic landscape, infrastructure, movement, agriculture, birds, animals, insects, and humans.
Space If we were to identify a common denominator to tie these variables together, it would be space. The notion of space is considered critically. Not exclusively the idea of enclosure, but more importantly that of transition. Transition suggests that space is relational. It is less about space in isolation, but about the relationship of one space to another and the contrast in character between spaces.
Character, quality, and experience Transition from space to space results in difference or changes in character, quality, and experience. This is why space is, relational. It means that the transition from one site quality to another implies ‘difference.’ Difference between inside/outside, dark/light, above/below, filtered/ exposed, rough/smooth, me/them.

ARBORETUM // FOUR PHASE STRATEGY
1 a breath of fresh air
Imagine going from an environment full of asphalt and fast moving traffic to a place for bees, bikes, babies, and birds. What would that place be like? It would be and ecologically supportive environment teaming with the most vulnerable residents of our planet. It is filled with pedestrians, bicycles, and public transport. Copenhagen reminds us that bicyclists are not part of transport, they are part of public life. We have accomodations for commuter bicyclists and eight year olds out with their grandparents. One could imagine that every drop of water that falls on main street stays on main
street or leaves cleaner when it fell. According to Free State climate factor plants such as Sunflower can produce 4 times crops per year. So the volume of biomass can be used to produce energy, reducing the need for energy produced from fossil fuels. Bamboo groves is introduced to the Arboretum park Rainwater canels are diverted into the site to water the urban agri- culture and landscaping of indiginous plants and trees
2
softer touch - living infrastructure
Bold infrastructure interventions build towards a city living in balance. This redevelopment of Arboretum provides a rich street life based on pedestrians, bicycles, and public trans- port. Urban green ways created from abandoned freeways and green streets provide a green city infrastructure for food, water and waste. In a net-zero energy and water community, local mixed-use structures and neighbourhood water capture, clean and pure water arriving from the sky. The urban green ways, roof gardens, living walls, and use of the in between greens spaces allow agriculture to be embedded into the community
• The scheme of High density mixed used low rise smart buildings is proposed to claim the landscape. • Is low energy/high performance, Electricity generator • Each building in a normal base is energy sufficient by 72% •Operates on On- site sewage treatment system by 99%• Operates on On- site run-off treatment system by 99%• Provides 99% water required for toilet flushing, water cooling and plant watering • Designed for low energy input. • Buildings are designed for maximum day lighting and shading for the excess light during the summer month.
08
ARBORETUM // FOUR PHASE STRATEGY
3 urban agriculture
The urban design strategies for the proposal are based on the notion that urban food and energy harvesting needs to be imbedded into strategic and highly visible locations in the site. • The public amenities such as supermarkets, farmers market, kindergartens and primary school are centralized at the walking distance or bicycle. This allows for the public realm being accessible in a more convenient distance and also the excess crops could be sold for the use of adjacent neighbourhoods. • Entices people into their previous property with assigned plots for agriculture. • Improves community connections through de-
signing active social spaces focused on food and agriculture such as farmers’ market areas and community gardens. • Produces year-around crop for community, promotes healthy living and Increases local food security • Assist low income people by providing healthy fresh organic food at low cost and builds strong local economy. • Improves soil structure to hold water. Increases biodiversity by using agricultural land not only to grow food, but as habitats for insects and birds. • Significantly reduces use of fossil fuels. (Farm machines and transportation). • Converts black and Gray water into potable water.
4
smart landscape “green technology”
• Alternative high-biomass species can be investigated to suit the remediation zone, helping to reduce the takeover of invasive species while promoting the restoration of native species’ habitats. Carbon Neutrality and Self-Sufficient Neighbourhoods: • According to Bloemfontein climate factor plants such as Sunflower can produce 4 times crops per year. So the volume of biomass can be used to produce energy, reducing the need for energy produced from fossil fuels. • Lead in the biomass can be sequestered or recycled through post-
harvest treatment techniques. This process will provide jobs for the community. • High-biomass grasses and bamboo can be used as barrier crops to help prevent erosion and fertilizer runoff. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS: • The process of removing all different contaminates from the Gray Water and waste
08
ABORETUM // DESIGN AND PLANNING PRINCIPLES
1. Carbon neutrality This plan places food and food production in direct connection with the end users. Planning around these principles would integrate agri-space into the urban infrastructure and begin to offset the carbon heavy footprint of cities.
2. System Diversity This plan would encourage food production at multiple scales as determined by proximity to production and distribution centres.
3. System redundancy This plan would distribute the means if production into the urban sphere. And provide inherent redundancy
4. Loop tightness
Through the density associated with this plan - loop tightness would be encouraged and apply
5. Local self-sufficiency This plan encourages self sufficiency - and favours the small producer and distributor vs agri-business . This plan accommodates design solutions at many scales
6. Responsive to Natural systems
This plan would advantage local systems and local climes, favouring natural systems and providing infrastructure where needed.
7. Waste = Food This plan would close the lop locally - tying food production top education this would build a closed loop into the system - where waste is part of a common process. This plan would distribute the means if production into the urban sphere and provide inherent redundancy

The aim of the design intervention is to propose a new office building for the Free State Care in Action agency (FSCIA) in the Batho area, which is designed to also function as a community centre serving the people of the Batho community.
FREE STATE CARE IN ACTION NON-PROFIT COMMUNITY CENTRE
The design intervention is a cost-effective, low carbon urban building that inspired sustainable behaviors and contributes to its surroudings by acting as a catalyst for the application of sustainable principles in a developing urban context. Community well-being and a better quality of life is promoted through the concept of “holism in which life is regarded as a coherent interdependant whole - a place where man, architecture and nature meets. The intervention is embedded in the local culture and its surroundings as an expression of Critical Regionalism. A harmonious balance is maintained between human activity and the environment. Funtions incorporated into the building were chosen to meet the needs of different groups of people from the community, at the same time bringing excitement, novelty and inspiration to the community. Locally embedded materials drive the formgiving, material quality, and detailing of the project. New skills are introduced through construction application and workshops. New skills are introduced to the community such as urban agriculture (Permiculture and horticulture), Earth contruction methods, and climate harnessing and control. Through an open exchange and wide application fo knowledge, human development and empowerment is promoted in an attempt to eradicate poverty. Important concepts incorporated into the design is transparency, participation, access to education, and economic opportunity.
SUSTAINABILITY OF URBAN ENVIRONMENTS An investigation of Principles of Sustainability in Bloemfontein. The urban building as catalyst for the application of sustainable principles in a developing urban context. The totality of Sustainability, and the relationship between sustainability and urbanism. Political and Ethical Agendas; man. Architecture and Nature. Tectonic expression and Critical Regionalism: Local cultures versus Universal Civilization. The Aesthetics of environmental functionalism: the play amongst structure, context and order/form/space.

COMMISSIONS In search of constant improvement, I explore and integrate new technologies and creative ideas into my workflow. Commissions feature visualizations done for J. Opperman. The client required certain views to illustrate technical details and material character as well as communicate a definite ‘zeitgeist’ of the proposed scheme. I enjoyed the creative freedom and the exploration and creation of new materials and the implementation of foliage to create a sense of realism and thus a sense of place.

12 RENDER DEVELOPMENT This section displays self development of 3D modelling, texturing, lighting, composition, rendering and post-editing of various places and spaces. The determination to improve in the field of architectural communication is constantly expanded by my exploration of the newest techniques and equipment.
